Update: Delta Changes Military Bag Policy After Soldiers Charged $2,800

(The Blaze/AP) — Reacting to public outcry, Delta says it will allow members of the military to check four bags for free.

The news came after two Army soldiers returning from Afghanistan complained in an online video that Delta charged their unit a total of $2,800 when some of them checked a fourth bag.

Delta Air Lines Inc. has long allowed three checked bags for active duty military members flying in coach, with charges beginning with a fourth bag. The soldiers said their travel orders allowed four bags.

“First and foremost, we want you to know we’re continuing to work with the soldiers individually to make this situation right for each of them,” Delta says in an updated blog post. “We regret that this experience caused these soldiers to feel anything but welcome on their return home. We honor their service and are grateful for the sacrifices of our military service members and their families.”

It then notes the policy change:

After careful consideration, effective immediately, U.S. military personnel traveling on orders in First and Business Class can check up to five bags at no charge and 4 bags in economy class. This change also adds dependents traveling with active military on orders. Each bag may weigh up to 70 lbs. (32 kg) and measure up to 80 linear inches (203 cm), which offers added flexibility over the standard 50 lbs. and 62 linear inches (157 cm) allotment. Because of weight, balance and space constraints, Delta Connection carriers will accept up to four bags at no charge. You can read the updates to the travel policy on delta.com.

The baggage fees “seem to be unusual,” Col. Thomas Collins, a spokesman for the Army, told Fox News Radio.

“Historically, the airlines have been gracious in waiving baggage fees for our troops deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan,” he said. “We hope Delta does what’s right here and waives the fees for deploying troops.”

According to Collins, however, the military will reimburse the 34 soldiers if Delta does not.

“If Delta won’t waive the fee, the soldiers can submit paperwork through their chain of command and the government will reimburse them,” he said.

The video of the two soldiers on a flight from Baltimore to Atlanta went viral and put Delta on the defensive. The video had clocked more than 170,000 views on YouTube by midday Wednesday.

I wrote to Delta this is how they responded:Thank you for sharing your thoughts. We realize there may be concerns regarding members of the United States military traveling with us on active duty and we want to take this opportunity to address some of their issues. We want our customers to know how deeply Delta respects and admires the men and women who fight every day for our country. As a company, we have very strong ties to the armed forces, with countless employees, family, friends, and loved ones serving actively or on reserve, and many more who are retired from military service. Delta understands what it takes to travel as an active duty member of the military which is why we work hard to ensure our policies allow active duty military personnel traveling with us additional flexibility. Effective June 8, 2011, Delta Air Lines will increase its baggage allowance for Active duty U.S. military personnel traveling on orders to or from duty stations to four (4) checked bags in Economy Class and up to five (5) checked bags in First and Business Class on Delta and Delta Connection carriers at no charge. This change is also applicable to dependents traveling with active military on orders. Previously the allowance included three (3) checked bags in Economy Class and four (4) in First and Business Class. Weight restrictions will still allow these bags to weigh up to 70 lbs. (32 kg) and measure up to 80 linear inches(203 cm), which offers added flexibility over the standard 50

Although I commend Delta for waiving the charges, I think it is wrong for private, for-profit firms to be roasted over the coals for following procedure. Additonal costs of travel for returning military should be paid for by the people they protect, you and me. I would like to think that if the other passengers had been aware of the charges, they would have been honored to pay them, I know I would.

You people ought to be ashamed of yourselves. I do support the troops and think that they should fly first class, but I also think that the govt should pay a private company whatever the contract states.
Congratulations you have taken your first step towards dismantling the airline industry.

Don’t be quick to jump to conclusions, from being a vet myself I know a LOT of the military, unless your broke or a dirtbag travels a lot, so we know the 3 bag limit and mostly remember the weight limit. Also, a quick trip to Finance with your receipt (keep unless you’re a dur da dur) will retrieve a refund then some. That being said however, the bag fee for ANY airlines is complete BRAVO SIERRA and especially so for military as most have MORE THAN 3 BAGS NOWDAYS.

The way these kids handled it is exactly how people with no class operate nowadays. They don’t like a rule or procedure, they don’t follow it and pi$$ and moan or break stuff. But speaking of talking about of both sides of their mouth, I believe American went through something similar recently and didn’t own up until they got busted for busting our soldiers. Delta, has reached their Common Sense solution. And, remarkably it coincides with the Common Sense expressed by We The People here on The Blaze.

“bully tactics”, you could spin it that way.

      Or, the Common Sense explanation:
      1. Problem identified
      2. Problem brought to attention of party(ies) involved.

Well, count me out of your little circus, then, because Delta had a policy and it enforced it. Again, whether (3) bags is not enough is not at issue here. The issue was that Delta somehow “wronged” 28 service members by not allowing them to check more bags than Delta’s contract with the military allowed. However, Delta’s policy “was” to allow (3) checked-in bags NOT (4).

Call me crazy for following rules, I guess.

Maybe you’re right but $200 dollars for one additional bag. Surely you see fault in that. The things they pack out aren’t “High Life” items. It’s their Govt. issued military gear. Uni’s, kevlar, boots, etc. They are not allowed to connex those items out because it departs out of Pakistan and half their crap shows up missing after it’s been stolen by Pakistani customs. The government requires them to fly with it because of that.

Know what you’re talking about before being so naive. I’d bet my last dollar that Delta is charging a premium on those chartered flights anyway.

I’ve noticed your fact, the 3-bag rule. Well, I am sure that this WAS a Delta policy or procedure. As in, Standard Operating Procedure. I have asked you to try and function at a higher level, employing judgement, discernment, and oh yes, Common Sense. Do you think these service members should have been treated to something a little better than the standard policy or procedure?

Did you even watch the whole video? And, if you did, and your conclusion is that “these kids are now justified for acting like prima donna’s.” I think we have identified that the problem with your position is that it stems from your perception of our brave young men and women. Hauschild, did you not read or do you not understand that their military orders authorized each of them to have 4 bags. In many cases having a spouse deploy is a financial hardship and especially the lower ranking soldiers were put in a bad situation because of this. They were not complaining (as you call it) because they had to pay to have their golf clubs shipped, it was the bare minimum of items that they needed while serving our country. They were not on vacation and pissed because they had to pay for one of their bags. You call them prima donnas I cant imagine you going through half the hardships they have endured. The good thing is you are the exception here, most people understand the situation for what it is.

Heavyduty ~ (Rose hijacked your thread!) I agree with you. Never should have been charged in the first place. But glad Delta was on top of it. No one should be counting servicemen’s bags (especially in uniform!). Agents’ response should be “thank you for your service to our country, please give me all of your bags. Have a good trip and be safe.” End of bag conversation at that point. When did people quit using common sense using common decency?

By following your example of speaking in generalities, can I say all Liberals or Progressives or Obama fans are idiots without you bashing my post?? Considering your track record here, I sincerely doubt it.

Rose Ellen, What state do you live in? I’d sure like to take you out for a beer and discuss your BS position regarding our military men. My father served in the Army , my brother served in the Navy, my nephew is serving in the Navy and my son wants to be a Marine when he is old enough. None of them are terrorists and I swear if you said otherwise within fist throwing distance I would beat the hate right out of you.

      @rose-ellen

ALL of our military men & women are required to give the oath (and they gladly & proudly do!):

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will OBEY THE ORDERS of the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.”
In your own words: “We reward our terrorists just like they reward theirs” — Apparently you believe Obama is a terrorist.

let me tell you something lady you kook. I am a Marine that is home now for now and I have served overseas in some brutal areas. You are just like the ahos that called the servicemen in Vietnam babykillers and the like. Thank God for your 1st amendment rights for you to be able to spew such bs. But hey guess what it takes more than you talking shiite on a blog to be an American. Have you ever served or done anything with your life? If not then stfu you waste of space. I am not gonna take the time to call you names like socialist marxist communist loser liberal because its so blatantly obvious. Go peddle your obvious hatred of yourself and America over at the Huffpo or wherever. Also after that go pack up and move to one of your great Muslim countries to be gang raped in the streets. You are the cancer that is rotting at this country patriots know it and are ready.

From all the posts that I’ve read from Rose-Ellen, I would have to say that she hates this country more than most people. I wouldn’t be surprised that if she was able to find a way to safely do it, that she would aid others wanting to hurt/destroy our nation and help them if she could keep her name out of it. I’ve seen very few people other than professional liberal talk show hosts that hate this nation that act so vitrolic towards our nation. Who knows, this rose-ellen could be some muslim terrorist or terrorist wannabe that is just using that name. Nothing would surprise me on who this person turned out to be. What I’m not so sure about is that if she is just a “rose-ellen” and she hates this nation, the soldiers fighting for this nation, the people of this nation, the foundation of this nation, the freedoms of this nation and everything good about this nation, why she doesn’t just leave and go to France, N Korea, Arabia, Syria, Yemen Venezuela or any other one of the countries that hate the United States as much as she does. She may come on here and claim differently but EVERY post that I’ve seen from her would back me up 100% on what I’m saying here.

#2. This person is just on here trying to incite a reaction. They are more than likely getting paid to do so.
#3. They won’t go away as long as their getting a reaction

Thank you for that it’s good to know that thier are still normal decent people out thier. I will speak only for myself but I was compelled to serve. I have the examples of my dad, grandfathers, uncles etc. Some stayed for careers some did a few years. I havent made my choice yet so far, im in the reserves now. I have a business that im trying to keep open right now and its so difficult I was deployed very recently for 18 months. God bless my wife but her vision of what my passion is was different from mine so some choices were made for my business. (its a tech company she is not technical) But alas oh well stuff happens, I am extremely happy to be home and with my kids. Thanks again True patriots wont let this country go down without a fight. Thanks Untameable-kate for standing up as well!! Good luck to us all!! Keep your kids and family safe!!

Oh yeah Rose-Ellen I too would be interested in what state do you live? Im in Nevada no longer in California thank you!!

every time my son came or went …if he was dressed in his Army uniform… not only would the airlines let him cut in line to the front but he was processed through security personally by the TSA, no line, and he was never charged for a bag… he never flew Delta though… usually they would also offer him an upgrade to First Class if available…

passengers on the flight would also buy him drinks or pay for his meals, on the plane or in the airport…

This just sounds like someone at the Delta ticket counter was clueless and being an ass or having a bad day and didn’t think this through….

No one ever died so that me or you could speak your mind.especially not americans in iraq or afghanistan.Keep deluding yourselves that they died so we could speak. How else to justify your senseless wars there? One man’s terrorist is anothers freedom fighter. The fact that americans have killed hundreds of thousands of men women and children there doesn’t constitute terrorism to you just shows how terrorism is a loaded term.

My family members who have served, and are serving, would as soon die for a muslim’s right to “speak their mind” as long as that speech doesn’t include bombs, airplanes, weaponry, bullets, biological warfare, poisons, or inciting others to use any of the above. As my favorite soldier says, “I disagree fully with what they say, and frankly, I think they’re nuts, but I’m willing to die for their right to say it!”

      Dear Susan,

The soldiers were screwed by a confusing policy and the fact they didn’t check to be sure they understood it. Also, they weren’t charged $2,800 each, but only $200 each.

As I posted on the original story, I guarantee in 6 months there’ll be a new stupid story about soldiers who get charged because they were positive they could bring 5 bags back when flying coach.

Too many options from Delta, too few keen readers in the military, too many emotional knee-jerk reactors reading TheBlaze.

Jaycen— I agree with at least one thing you said, that is: Next story in the future will be someone wanted to check 5 bags instead of 4. Delta will have to let them check 5 bags, than in another 6 months someone will want to check 6 bags.

I thought we all agree on one thing here at the Blazes! RULES are RULES no matter who you are, usually we say this because of the rich are getting away with something, but RULES are RULES. We ALL need to start following them!

This said: God Bless the military and THANK YOU!!
