Update: ESPN Yanks ‘Monday Night Football’ Open Over Hank Jr‘s ’Hitler’ Comment

It was an odd interview for sure. And now it’s just caused a change in television programming — sort of.
As The Blaze reported Monday morning, Hank Williams Jr. — the iconic country singer known for his “Monday Night Football” jingle — delivered an awkward interview to Fox News in which he made a Hitler reference. Now, that has led the network to pull the opening before Monday’s game.
In a statement on the company’s website, it said it was “disappointed” with his comments.
“While Hank Williams, Jr. is not an ESPN employee, we recognize that he is closely linked to our company through the open to Monday Night Football,” the statement says. “We are extremely disappointed with his comments, and as a result we have decided to pull the open from tonight’s telecast.”
Below is the exchange that got the crooner in trouble:
HANK WILLIAMS: Remember the golf game?
STEVE DOOCY: Boehner?
HANK WILLIAMS: That was one of the biggest political mistakes ever.
CO-HOSTS: Why?
HANK WILLIAMS: That turned a lot of people off. You know, watching, you know, it just didn’t go over.
GRETCHEN CARLSON: You mean when John Boehner played golf with President Obama?
HANK WILLIAMS: Oh, yeah! Yeah. And Biden and Kasich, yeah. Uh-huh.
GRETCHEN CARLSON: What did you not like about it? It seems to be a really pivotal moment for you.
HANK WILLIAMS: Come on. Come on. It would be like Hitler playing golf with Netanyahu, OK?
Watch the exchange here.
The comments led to host Gretchen Carlson “disavowing” the comments immediately after the interview.
And in case the tune (which has been used for over 20 years) is unfamiliar to you, this is what football fans won’t be hearing on Monday (although the intros change slightly every year, the tun remains the same):
What do you think?

Posted on October 3, 2011 at 10:40pmAnother victory for American CAPITALISM! And thanks FOX for bringing down another right wing loon, as you did with GB with his comments about President Obama.
All these comments about PC and “opinions” totally miss the point. ESPN is in the business of making money, as all businesses are. When someone connected this closely to ESPN goes on air, sounding and looking like he’s drugged up, and comparing President Obama to Hilter, of course they are going to react. Despite what you might think, most Americans find that offensive, just as most Americans find that accusing President Obama of being “racist” did.
You lose advertisors that way. ESPN doesn’t want to lose advertisors. They want to make money and don’t want their brand blemished by a someone who makes remarks offensive to most Americans (not to mention one that looks and sounds like he’s coked up).
No, this isn’t “giving in to PC.” This is pure, red white and blue American Capitalism. The customer is always right.

“I’d like to get a hold of the car czar too,” Carlson said. “Never did I think personally that I would need to get a hold of him, but now I do because my parents have owned a General Motors dealership in Anoka, Minn., for 90 years and they were terminated last week and they would like to know why. They would like to know why from the car czar.”

Hank didn’t compare Mr. Obama to Hitler. If you are actually interested in the truth, perhaps you should watch the interview again.
You said, “You lose advertisers that way.” Do you think conservatives are going to be happily buying products advertised on MNF? Do you think Hank, Jr’s millions of fans are going to.
MNF was not able to draw enough viewers to continue to be on ABC during prime time. They had to move the show to ESPN. Do you think by dropping Hank for something he obviously didn’t do is going to increase their viewership?
“The Customer Is Always Right” was a campaign launched by Marshal Fields in Chicago around 1900. The simple truth is the customer is not always right. They are right when they are right. This could cost ESPN/ABC MNF. They have just attacked a large portion of their audience.

Hank did not say, Obama is like Hitler. If you think that, then JZS is LIKE A MORON. Oh well, in that case maybe you are. In any case, Hank said that two political enemies like Boehner and Obama, on opposite sides, golfing together is similar to Hitler and Netanyahu (the head of Israel) golfing together.
This is two examples of political enemies that would not likely want to share a golf game and looks goofy and staged if it were to happen. And when Boehner agreed to it, it looked goofy and staged. And it make Boehner look like less of a leader. This example was mostly aimed at Boehner and Hank made that clear.
For some other valid comparisons.
JZS is like a troll, JZS is like a moron, JZS is like an imbalanced person, JZS is like a liberal.

You said, “I imagine,” and that pretty well sums it up.
This is quote from the transcript. “It would be like Hitler playing golf with Netanyahu.”
Note the word “LIKE.” From 7th grade English, you know that that is a simile. To refresh your memory, I have included the definition of “simile.’ A simile is a figure of speech that directly compares two different things, usually by employing the words “like”, “as”, or “than”.Two unlike things are explicitly compared, as in “she is like a rose.”
My statement that you wouldn’t call Hank, Jr a “right wing loon.” stands. Its easy to be a big man when you are hiding behind anonymity. What I was saying in clearer terms is that I do not think you have the courage to say the things you say face to face without hiding behind “JZS.”

Posted on October 3, 2011 at 7:50pmESPN taking the opening down has nothing to do with the 1st amendment. ESPN is private company and they can choose to associate with whom ever they choose.
This would only be a violation of his 1st amendment rights if he were to crimially persecuted for saying it. As of the time I of this post, he hasn’t been. But I will be watching for it.

YES they are a private company. Guess I am not watching MNF.
After Bev Perdue, Orzag & the one Congressman’s comments about suspending elections, it is not a stretch to compare Obama to Hitler.
I definitely am not watching Gretchen anymore. First of all she is a conformist. She conforms to the uniform of all females must have a hemline above their knees. We only need to see the hosts form the waist up. We want ideals &factual reporting not eye candy.

Obummer is a totalitarian wannabe. He has said as much. One thing about it is that this is a private company, so it can be boycotted and their bottom line can be hurt. Hard to do that with a government subsidized entity, they’ll just raise taxes to cover the lost revenue.

Posted on October 3, 2011 at 9:23pmGuys, I really just am not that bright. I said earlier that espn is a private company but I think most of you know that Disney is a publicly traded company. How I didn’t know that should be beyond comprehension. It is like the other day when I said Obama couldnt intervene in the Troy Davis execution because it wasn’t a federal crime. Of course his spokesman, carney, came out and said that the president wasn’t going to intervene. Of course he must have said that because he just didn’t know what the President can get involved with. It’s amazing that I talk down to people when in reality i am an absolute imbecile living off all of your dimes

Yes, oh delusional one, ESPN is private. But since nobody is saying they do not have their private rights to make whatever decisions they choose you miss the point once again. The liberal trolls on this board truly prove that liberalism is a mental disorder.
