As we reported earlier today, a Goodyear blimp on loan from Lightship Europe Limited crashed in a ball of flames in Germany on Sunday. The pilot died while saving three other passengers. Now, new video has emerged showing the incredible incident.
While the audio is in German, the video says it all:
Another YouTube video purports to show the blimp just hours before the the fateful crash (according to a Google translation of the video’s description):

Posted on June 13, 2011 at 8:09pmThe pilot is a true hero, he yelled for the passengers to jump when he could have jumped first himself.

Posted on June 14, 2011 at 12:41amIt‘s really a shame they didn’t all jump at once. The pilot stayed on his job to the end and went down with the ship.

Posted on June 13, 2011 at 6:13pmI thought blimps were filled with helium instead of the highly flamable hydrogen?
Report Post »TJexcite
Posted on June 13, 2011 at 7:18pmHelium is as flamable as hydorgen but more stable. Also safer when in strorage, when you have the large amount you need for a blimp. You need less Heluim than Hydorgen for the same lift as well.

Posted on June 13, 2011 at 8:06pmYou are right about helium being non-flammable. It is inert – doesn’t react chemically with anything. The fire was caused from the fuel used by the engines. And also, it takes more helium than hydrogen to lift the vehicle. Hydrogen has atomic weight of 1 (one proton) while helium has atomic weight of 4 (2 protons, 2 neutrons).

Posted on June 13, 2011 at 10:46pmIt was noted though, all crew and passengers sounded like Alvin and the Chipmonks.

Posted on June 14, 2011 at 12:39amDaveposh-Yes, but the hydrogen molecule has two atoms, while helium does not form a molecule. So, the proper comparison would be H2 to He, with weights of 2 and 4 respectively.

Posted on June 13, 2011 at 6:35pmPerhaps my angle isn‘t as distorted as your’s. I don’t see anything like an “ecomomic stimulus” at all.
All I can see is a place where a very brave pilot did what was neccessary to save 3 lives, and paid with his own. I’m sure his family, friends, and co-workers will morn his loss. I think he was more than a political punch-line

Posted on June 13, 2011 at 6:36pmSomething large, filled with Hot Air and promoting a Good Year crashes. The perfect anology for the Obamanomics. But it did create a shovel ready job, for the clean up crew and Pilot.

Posted on June 14, 2011 at 1:37amSince the last article, I looked for online schematics for the Goodyear blimp.
No such luck, the best I could find is this schematic, it only give the rudimentary
design. Of course it is not in English either.

If anyone has better luck finding schematics, give a comment and post a link.
