Update: Gay Activists Vow to Fight Christian Group’s iPhone App

When Apple unveiled its iPhone and welcomed techies everywhere invent creative apps, they probably didn‘t anticipate they’d find themselves embroiled in a battled over abortion and gay rights. But the fight over the Manhattan Declaration app continues to intensify.

In November, a petition from Change.org pushed Apple to pull the app, a pledge that “speaks in the defense of the sanctity of life, traditional marriage and religious liberty,“ and calls on Christians to ”adhere firmly to their family convictions.”

The Christian group behind the app is now proposing an updated version they hope will be considered less controversial. Supporters of the app have also launched an ad campaign against Apple’s “censorship,“ labeling Apple CEO Steve Jobs ”Big Brother.”

But opponents of the app — including the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) — are pledging to oppose any app which suggests homosexuality and abortion are immoral:

The makers of the application say they have removed the quiz and will resubmit the application. But simply removing the quiz does nothing to address the underlying problem, which is that this application tells people to pledge to oppose equality for gay and lesbian couples.

Tell Apple to stay strong in the face of pressure to reinstate this application – and to stand behind its commitment to keep these hurtful attitudes out of its app store.

GLAAD also warns that not removing the Manhattan Declaration app could be bad for business.

But blog site Gawker suggests that whatever Apple decides to do — whether it will keep the new app or pull it like the last — the company will inevitably anger some significant group of customers, but says “the company only has itself to blame.”

CEO Steve Jobs designated the store as a place with “freedom from porn” and from risqué fashion spreads, illustrated gay literature, political caricature and other controversial content.

Now every time Apple approves an app, it implies moral endorsement of the content of that app. Rejections likewise carry an implied moral condemnation.

Gawker recommends Apple “support gay rights,“ but stresses that the company should ”say it supports free speech.”  But because the company has set a precedent for determining what is and is not “appropriate” content, the app store will remain censored to some degree.

What say you?  Should Apple play “moral traffic cop” with the apps available in its online store, or should the company maintain a firm 100-percent free speech stance?

I have written to Steve Jobs and you should too. This is another case of a “minority” trying to force their will on the majority. The majority of America and of the world for that matter. They are only complaining because their conscience is being touched. Anyone doubt that gays are the minority? There may be a lot of them, but they are still the clear minority and need to accept that and shut-up!

Don’t they have anything better to do with their time. Is having or promoting just a modicum of values such a threat and hate crime that their alternative lifestyle can’t withstand? Become a Christian just as a lark lets say and see how it feels on this side of the fence. You might become just a little more tolerant yourselves or just maybe you may be convicted by the Holy Spirit. Remember…You are Flesh, Soul and Spirit each waring against the other. Until all 3 are joined you will have no peace, you will know no peace. Try it! Isn’t that your motto? Try it (being gay) you might like it. Well try being a Christian and accepting it as a truth and see where that leads you. You can always return to you old ways but something tells me you may not want to do that.

This is so absurd. WHY did Jobs pull that Christian group’s app? All he has to do is post a DISCLAIMER like all public broadcasting stations and newspapers do, stating that “Apple does not necessarily agree with content provided.” What a stupid thing to do! Now he’s embroiled in the middle of a heated controversy and none of this was necessary.

As an American, I feel it is the right of people to believe what they wish, no matter whether or not it offends or upsets gays (like myself), women, blacks, whites, hispanics, or whatever. If a person does not agree with a person after a well thought out debate, then let‘s agree to disagree but don’t belittle or speak poorly of those who you disagree with.

I just want to live my life and be left alone. I want a smaller, more controlled gov’t and lower taxes. I am a conservative and I have been criticized for my beliefs because I am gay!

However, I will not condone your lifestyle either. I will not teach my children that it is proper or even natural. I see it for what the Bible tells me it is. But…We are all sinners and we all sin in our different ways. Far be it for me to point my finger at you.

Gays & abortion are the answer to population control. Just two groups being used by the globalists to get rid of ‘undesirables’…..they started with black people, handicapped people, and mentally sick people. Then they decided it would be easier to just stop them from being born. Gays will be thrown under the bus when the time comes. obama care will not pay for AIDS …you know ..the virus that was intended to wipe out millions of ‘undesirables’.

Apple seems doomed, whichever way it goes some group will not be happy. Let’s see, some say the gay community constitutes as much as 10% of the population. I have no idea what percent are anti-gay. The largest group probably, like me, just don’t care. The problem is that the 10% is very vocal. If apple would make a business decision (doubtful), they would allow any app which contributes to their product’s public acceptance would enhance their bottom line – so much for the greedy capitalist.

Absolutely correct. If gay/lesbians were truly okay with their lifestyle they would be no more offended than I would be if someone called me a heterosexual. They are convicted in their hearts and HATE being reminded that their lifestyle IS immoral. I think this is why some have chosen NOT to believe in God, Jesus, the Bible and religion all together. They WANT to remain in their sins and it is much easier to live in your sins if you don’t have that pesky little thing called religion tripping you up. This is why just the mention of anything biblical, or the mere depiction of the nativity OFFENDS them. They could have gone the whole day without being reminded of their sins and lifestyle choices. But there the Christians go again stirring up their conscious’ again reminding them that THEY are sinners just like everyone else.

I give it 10 years and either we will all be forcibly Muslim, with our country run by our enemies because our military is too weak and PC to fight OR the gays will be begging to go back to the old rule of NO gays in the military.

It can only be considered “free speech” if it is approved by the Progressive PC police. Any speech that Progressives dislike is labled “hate speech”. Don’t be a “hater”….

They have a story at donsmithshow.com about the attacks that are going on with free speech right now. The best is the Al Sharpton wanting Rush Limbaugh’s liscence pulled for being offensive. Al Sharpton is one of the most offensive men in history. Amazing.

      Email from Manhattan Declaration;

      Dear Friends,

We are resubmitting today the Manhattan Declaration iPhone/iPad app to Apple. And we desperately need your help.

First, we need you to contact Apple now. More than 43,000 people have signed our petition to Apple, which is a great outpouring of support. Even if you’ve written or called before, please do so again. Steve Jobs has to know how important this is to all of us. You can write him at Steve@apple.com. Or, call Apple at 408-996-1010.

Second, we need your financial help. This controversy has caused us a lot of unanticipated expenses: The servers of the Manhattan Declaration website couldn’t handle the crush of visitors to the site, so we had to upgrade the servers; we engaged in a public relations battle-a battle we had to win. By the way, we placed an op-ed with the San Francisco Chronicle-right in Apple’s back yard. You can read it here.

We have also had to pay to re-design the app. The questionnaire that we included in the app was a lightning rod for gay activists, so we deleted the questionnaire.

All of this has put us behind budget by $30,000. As you know, we operate on a shoestring, depending on ministries and organizations to donate their employees’ time. But we must meet these unexpected expenses we just mentioned.

We don’t have any choice but to carry on this fight and win it. If Apple can arbitrarily block the Manhattan Declaration from its app store, then it can do so with any organization that bases its work on the Bible. I truly believe that the Manhattan Declaration was targeted by activists as a test case. If they succeed this time, they will be emboldened to target others.

Please help us today. And thank you. Without your prayerful and financial support, we couldn’t continue to promote the Manhattan Declaration and its defense of human life, marriage, and religious freedom.

The Manhattan Declaration is a non-partisan statement of conscience in defense of human life, traditional marriage and religious freedom. Visit us at ManhattanDeclaration.org ………….

You can, if you like, email Steve Jobs and let him know how you feel about this situation.
Please keep it civil and make a good impression.
      This is the email I sent a few days ago;

      Dear Mr. Jobs,

I emplore you to reconsider allowing the Manhattan Doctrine app. to be in your catalog. I feel that this move on your part would keep from dealing a dangerous legal blow to freedom of speech in the future. I’m sure I could find some other app. in your catalog that would offend me. But I am not trying to shut any of them down. I hope that in the name of fairness and freedom of speech, FOR ALL, you will reconsider your decision……….Thank you!

      Sincerly,

      Email to,
      steve@apple.com

Good timing on this article. Until I read this, I was going to go to BestBuy to get iPhones for my me, wife and two kids and iPads for me and my wife, for Christmas. Sorry Steve, NOT NOW. The GLAAD crowd may put off such things, but they’ll still buy them later. I’ll never buy your stuff again. I’m “GLAAD” this came out before I wasted my money.

I really hate to be technical about this, but censorship is only illegal when government does it.

That said, there’s a seeming Catch 22 in the wikileaks debacle, but the difference there lies in the fact that the docs leaked are classified. The government *does* have a right to keep some secrets for national security and the security of her allies, but I digress.

Apple has a right to do this. Doesn‘t mean it’s right, but they have the right to moderate content if they so choose.

The hypocrisy of Al Sharpton knows no bounds. Occasionally it is wise to take a good look in the mirror. Of course in doing so one may not like what one sees.

      @ @Leftfighter

I’m not sure anyone is arguing the legal side of things that Apple can censor at will, but we ARE arguing the hypocrisy of the left and definitely talking about not buying Apple products.

I am 100% ‘GLAAD’ that I don’t own a single item from Apple… they have always turned my nose… I’m a techie and have always been and these stupid fads just drive me even further from ever buying an Apple product. I would LOVE to own an iPod or even an iPad but I can’t get over the dirty taste my mouth leaves off when I think about seriously buying one.

I’ve said for years, as a mac fan and user since 1984 to this day, I’d rather have Bill Gates run apple. I like Gates personally but hate his product. I love apple products and hate the company and Steve Jobs. From now on I‘ll buy almost new macs so the money doesn’t go to Apple and causes that offend ME!
