Update: GOP Rep. Issues Statement on ‘Shoot Obama’ Question — ‘Will Not be Tolerated’

GOP Rep. Paul Broun (GA) just released a statement regarding the frenzy surrounding an exchange he had with a town hall attendee on Tuesday night. At the meeting, a man asked him the appalling question, “Who’s going to shoot Obama?”

At the time, Broun responded by brushing the question aside and changing the subject, a move that drew criticism from many on the left.

(Read our original report on this story.)

Today, considering the frenzy, Broun released the following statement, which notes that he and his staff did notify authorities:

“Tuesday night at a town hall meeting in Oglethorpe County, Georgia an elderly man asked the abhorrent question, “Who’s going to shoot Obama?”  I was stunned by the question and chose not to dignify it with a response; therefore, at that moment I moved on to the next person with a question.  After the event, my office took action with the appropriate authorities.  I deeply regret that this incident happened at all.  Furthermore, I condemn all statements—made in sincerity or jest—that threaten or suggest the use of violence against the President of the United States or any other public official.  Such rhetoric cannot and will not be tolerated.”

Greg Sargent at the Washington Post says the Secret Service has been involved and the man regrets his actions:

According to Ed Donovan, a Secret Service spokesman, the situation has been looked into.

“We’re aware of the incident and the appropriate steps were taken,” Donovan told me. “At this point it’s a closed matter.”

A law enforcement source confirmed that the Secret Service interviewed the constituent and determined that he or she was an “elderly person” who now regrets making a bad joke.

“In this case this was poor taste,” the source says. “The person realized that.”

TPM interviewed the local reporter who covered the story, and that reporter described the man as a “huge fan.”

The Blaze is still awaiting a response regarding follow-up questions we sent the congressman’s district office.

People that seek violence are idiots. Like all those goons at these rallies. Where is the MSM with the reporting? The Tea Partiers had NO violent acts perpetrated except when it was against them and their members and the MSM and public officials (democRATS) labelled them as violent haters. With all the violent vitriol on behalf of the organized unions there is NO mention of the violence perpetratd on the Tea Partiers that were also there.

I wonder when Obama he turns them loose and they really start to riot and Obama says nothing, if many would feel the way this guy did. I am sure, if it was not a plant, he meant to say “HOW COME NOBODY IS STOPPING HIM?”

There are too many decent moral people that see his power through polarity and his belief in “united we stand, divided we fall ” concentrating on the division part.

Mt thoughts exactly. The far-left/radicals/Progressives/Socialists/Communists do this all the time, and it’s beyond time that Republicans not play their game. Broun didn’t need to issue a statement. All he needed to do was notify authorities (which he did), then, if someone, somehow, was to imply that he (Broun) could/should be linked to the same thoughts of that elderly man, he could just say….do you agree with that man? Of course the far-left questioner would say ‘No’, at which time Broun would just say…‘then we are in perfect agreement’.

      Paul Broun said:

“Furthermore, I condemn all statements—made in sincerity or jest—that threaten or suggest the use of violence against the President of the United States or any other public official. Such rhetoric cannot and will not be tolerated.”

Yes, such statements CAN and most certainly WILL be tolerated, as per the Bill of Rights:

      Second Amendment:

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

The Second Amendment IS A THREAT against corrupt government, and the threat is death. It’s in the Bill of Rights, for crying out loud!

Here’s the beginning of the Bill of Rights:

“THE Conventions of a number of the States, having at the time of their adopting the Constitution, expressed a desire, in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers, that further declaratory and restrictive clauses should be added: And as extending the ground of public confidence in the Government, will best ensure the beneficent ends of its institution.”

Sometimes things are said in the heat of passion that are…….irresponsible. I don’t condone what was said, but when the elderly man who made the errant comment was confronted by the Secret Service, I’m fairly confident that he probably realized he was too…verbose. A little different had he said he was going to do the act.

The man has a first amendment right more over he didn’t call for the president to be shot he asked who was going to do it. The correect answer is simple NO ONE IS GOING TO SHOOT THE PRESIDENT. If you have disagreements with his policies or ideolgy show up and vote.

GOOD! Why not let Obama make the case for us? This a republic where the battle ground is in the field of ideas and debate. We should try real hard and avoid any thoughts that would lead to violence. I think Wisconsin, Obama’s mastery of foreign policies, budget crisis and handling of the economy is doing the job for us. Obama’s may be the best agent to make the case as to why socialism does not work.

      @smithclar3nc3,

“If you have disagreements with his policies or ideolgy show up and vote.”

That’s assuming you still have the ability to show up after the government has relieved you of so many of your unalienable rights, and has economically “sanctioned” the private sector so much, that either you’re in prison for standing up for your rights, or enough people have caved to government overreach that no one will be willing to stand up for YOUR rights because government holds their paychecks.

“Thus, after taking each individual by turns in its powerful hands and kneading him as it likes, the sovereign extends its arms over society as a whole; it covers its surface with a network of small, complicated, painstaking, uniform rules through which the most original minds and the most vigorous souls cannot clear a way to surpass the crowd; it does not break wills but it softens them, bends them, and directs them; it rarely forces one to act, but it constantly opposes itself to one’s acting; it does not destroy, it prevents things from being born; it does not tyrannize, it hinders, compromises, enervates, extinguishes, dazes, and finally reduces each nation to being nothing more than a herd of timid and industrious animals of which government is the shepherd. .  .  .”

      Then he contacted the authorities.

      Hey Doc,
Your statement is short side just like the quote you posted.
Individuals who commit crimes show their bad judgement as well couterprductive to society in general. They do have the option of petitioning their local courts to reinstate their right to vote.
It also implies that man will only act in his own interest which society proves wrong everyday when citizens take actions that put themselves in harms way to save others.
That being said in a society based in materialism (which is good for the economy) people tend to vote for their own self interest reguardles of the consequences to the body as a whole. But all that’s neither here nor there.
I stand by my statement in that while totally tatseless the gentleman comments neither attacked the president or called for some else to do so. Secret Service putting the Obama turannical boot to his neck was uncalled for and a violation of his first amendment rights. As much of an overreach as sending the secret service to threaten a MMA fighter who said he would like to fight Obama. It is clearly a gastepo tactic. Not to aquaint Obama with nazis I guess I could have said KGB tatctic but they’re two head of the the same coin.
All that aside the answer would still be the same No one is going to shoot Obama. Anyone who has issue with his policies or ideology show up and vote. And since you brought that some can’t vote because of felonies they can still get the word out campaign and donate to whomever is running against Obama. You are free to think and free to act with in the rules of a civilized society.

You people are uneducated and can’t even read the first amendment to the US Constitution.
Every president from washington on has been threatened.
What I found interesting was the statement of the local reporter the the person who asked that question was a “huge fan”. A “huge fan” of whom, congress members rarely have “huge fans”, so, if he was referring to o-bow-ma then he was nothing more than a typical democrat troll trying to stir up trouble. The secret service seemed to have cleared the old guy rather quickly, I have my suspicions.

I think it is high time that more people of character take office. On both sides folks use violent metaphonrs which are then written off as jokes in bad taste. This politician has already been disrespectful to the President like tweeting during the State of The Union.

Why didn’t this man simply say at the time “Security?” He didn’t want to offend his base. I have heard the tape. There are no nervous laughs.. they are congratulatory laughs.

This is what the Tea Party stands for.

You say that the threat of death against those in government who violate their oath to the Constitution is a crime, but that’s very much the topic at hand. You can’t just declare it so.

You also say that my statement and quote are short sighted, but I quoted the Founders who spent quite a bit of time thinking about these issues, having experienced government abuses, themselves.

But the most glaringly effective part of my argument, that many seem to miss, is the fact that the Founders used the word “arms” in the Second Amendment. Which means that part of the Founders’ understanding of what it was to be a representative Republic included the threat of death against government abuse.

Maybe you can make the case that the Founders were nuts. To me, that has always been worth talking about, because in doing so you further solidify the perception of the Founders’ wisdom to the current generation.

Actually the “Speech Giver” has been the best thing to happen in this country. He has woke up WE THE PEOPLE !! I am down here in Georgia and this type of question does WE THE PEOPLE no good at all or my beloved Georgia !!

WE THE PEOPLE across the country came out and voted against a RADICAL agenda. WE THE PEOPLE did what the founding fathers gave us. The right to VOTE in State and federal REPRESENTATIVES. It is obvious that the FAR-LEFT has been sent a very clear message. WE THE PEOPLE do not like your RADICAL big government, spending and ignoring the very PROCEDURE, WE THE PEOPLE believe in.

The Wisconsin debate and how you have conducted yourselves has shown me you really do not care for the Constitution and the American PROCESS of POLITICS, The “Speech Giver” is ignoring the LAWS of the land and deciding on which ones HE wants to enforce.

This is NOT the United States Of America anymore it is turning into an

      OLIGARCHY: 1:government by the few

2 : a government in which a small group exercises control especially for corrupt and selfish purposes; also : a group exercising such control

3: an organization under oligarchic control

Actually, I’m appalled that “elderly” gentleman, whoever he was, asked that question. If he was truly “elderly”, he should easily be able to remember the assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan and the actual assassination of JFK, followed by that of MLK and RFK. I’m not all THAT old, and I remember all four of them quite clearly.

I’m also quite dismayed at the casual attitude these people have towards “shooting” someone. People were actually tweeting that someone should shoot the Governor of Wisconsin. Quite truthfully, I’m not even sure the flowers have faded on the graves of those who were murdered in Arizona yet. Is this really the way we want our society to be – I don‘t like you so I’m going shoot you?

And here is the question that should have been asked – Do you really want Joe Biden in the Oval Office?

Really? For eight years the left screamed for Bush’s head on a platter and even made a movie about it. Second, he didn‘t call for the president’s death, only asked who was going to do it. Third, the 1st Amendment protects his right to his vitriol, no doubt based in an intense dissatisfaction and frustration with this administration’s performance and lack of civility toward the American people. Do I agree with his question? No. It’s not a question I would ask in that setting. Does he have a right to speak it? Absolutely.

      @getalong,

“We are a country of law. Violence is NEVER acceptable. Impeachment or voting out of office is America’s way of doing business.”

We are a country of law BECAUSE it is supposed to be understood that the Constitution is the supreme law of the land. It guarantees a process by which our laws will be written and enforced, and a process which allows a free people to keep the government from abusing the People’s unalienable rights.

But when elected officials VIOLATE their oath to the Constitution, they attempt to forcibly change the way the Constitution works, and against the consent of the governed; This means that fundamentally speaking the government no longer recognize it’s role as servant of the People, and history has shown that this can have deadly consequences.

How do you impeach someone who’s supporters are also willing to violate their oaths of office?

This is why the Second Amendment was written, and why the threat of death is necessary, and at times, warranted.

From what I see how can we tell with out access to the person who said the words whether that was a statement or a question, we need the whole CONTEXT/Truth of the matter. Considering the violence on the left maybe the person was asking for an opinion from his elected official? Since we don’t have Minority Report openly in effect (clearly since it was a movie).

I like Glenn wonder the same thing and pray it does not happen, but like Kennedy‘s life if you offend one of your benefactors will they go to the extreme point of assinating the person that they put into power if they don’t get what they want. Are they going that far is the real question. Remember George Schwartz/Soros has an agenda and he is not above sending people to their deaths, he did it as a child in the 1940′s.

Good, no one should call for the death of a president, regardless of how bad they are, just call for them to resign or be impeached for treason and such.

      **********************
I agree, and Drama schools should not assign their students to make movies on the assassination of ANY President, and Journalism Schools should not assign their students to write fake news stories about the same; but we know this was just a small smattering of the kind of thing done when GWB was POTUS, (( WHERE WAS ALL THE MEDIA FUROR THEN? ))
