Update II: News Station Now Says Mumbling Reporter Did See a Doctor

After saying yesterday that CBS 2 (Los Angeles) reporter Serene Branson, whose Grammy report degenerated into gibberish on Monday night causing many to fear a stroke, had not been hospitalized, one of the channel’s sister stations now reports Branson did visit a doctor on Monday. The station attributed the episode to “health-related problems” and said Branson underwent some tests:

On the lighter side, she was like Steve Carrell in Bruce Almighty…I hope after she gets through this and is checked out medically that she can look back on the episode with a sense of humor.

If she’d suffered a stroke doctors would have kept her in the hospital overnight, especially considering her celebrity status and the public attention that goes with it. She wasn’t kept overnight, but now CBS rushes to say that she saw a doctor. There’s more to this story.

I would say the “…two time Emmy nominee and the recipient of the Frank Shakespeare Award for Outstanding Achievement in Journalism…” (they thought it was important to put her credentials in the press release) was mortified by the tongue twisting screw up on live TV at a high profile event and is perfectly fine.

Okay, here’s something no one seems to be considering. What if she didn’t misspeak? What if there really was a “very heavy burtation”, and she was just trying to tell everyone?

This is about as close to oral-epilepsy as one could ever imagine! I sincerely hope this young lady finds the root cause of her unfortunate lapse of coordinated speech! (And, my fear of committing the same mis-oration is the very reason I have great trepidation about EVER running for public office!)

She was smiling and seemed quite lucid when she began to speak, so I don’t think she appeared medicated. But it did act like a stroke, or perhaps a mild seizure. Warrants testing for sure.

my point was: which has the higher odds: a thirty something LA reporter having a stroke on live TV, or being high at an awards show.

I do hope that Branson is well and fully recovers – but really, when a reporter or anchor at the C(ertified)B(iased)S(ocialists) network talks “gibberish” who could possibly be surprised ?

It was definitely a TIA and it was very probable that she’s had them before the way that they said “health related problems”. They probably gave her a blood thinner to dissolve the clot.

I was diagnosed with a heart condition 7 years ago that had caused me to have similar small strokes. I would bet my house that was a stroke. As I listened to her I remember exactly how that feels, and while I never had one while on camera I would bet that is exactly what I looked like.

lighten up folks, it very well could have been anything, and until it’s known, my guess is just as valid as yours :)

i mean, what are the chances that a LA reporter did some drugs? about the same for a 30 something to have a stroke…?

Anyone at any age can suffer a stroke. It’s a myth that only old folks can get them.
My 36 yr. old cousin had one and died recently after being in a paralyzed state for 20 yrs. as a result.

I care for my 87 year old Father and he has had several TIA’s or small strokes. Each time he displayed these symptons where he looked at me and tried to talk and it was this same type of gibberish. He knew what he wanted to say but it came out all jumbled. The most valuable thing this report can show is what others should be looking for in anyone, no matter what their age. I‘m glad to see she was checked out and hope she didn’t wait too long. It’s very important to get treatment as quickly as possible. Wish her all the best.

I was on the phone when something like this happened to me. I had a stroke while on the phone. I was talking normal one moment, the next I was speaking gibberish. If I didn’t have the GPS locator on my cellphone activated, the EMTs never would have found me because they asked where I was couldn’t understand my response.

I still think it was a TIA or mini stroke. It can clear up on its own but is often a precursor to the real thing. So glad she saw a doctor though, I feel much better about this story now.

Take it from the linguist. This wasn’t mere gibberish. It was patterned. She held on to the prosodic and phonological rules of English perfectly naturally, but couldn’t seem to put meaning units together with the sounds that are normally attached with them. I’m not a neurologist, but linguistic training makes me think aphasia to a single area of the brain could be responsible for this kind of mixup.
Aphasia can be hilarious to outside observers. There is record of stroke victims who can’t put words in order, but individually get words correct every time. Others, forget how to add suffixes and prefixes and plural endings and the like (the morphology), but can cuss a blue streak with alacrity.
      Prayers for Serene.
