Update: Indiana College Now Bans National Anthem Melody, Not Just Words

First, The Blaze reported that a tiny, 1,000-student Mennonite school in Indiana banned the words to the National Anthem, now however, Goshen College has banned the song in its entirety — melody and all.
According to Goshen’s president, Jim Brenneman, the words to The Star-Spangled Banner were “too violent.” The reasonable explanation being that the Mennonite faith reportedly endorses pacifism.
While the school band was allowed to continue playing the tune to the National Anthem, even that is now apparently too much.
The school’s board of directors allegedly told Brenneman to “find an alternative to playing the National Anthem that fits with sports tradition, that honors country and that resonates with Goshen College’s core values and respects the views of diverse constituencies.”
Diverse constituencies.
In a June statement regarding the banned lyrics, Brenneman stated, “I am convinced that Goshen College is on a challenging and rewarding journey toward becoming a more diverse institution that serves an increasingly diverse community.”
“I am hopeful that this resolution will help Goshen College move forward together, and focus on finding new ways to welcome students from our local and regional community.”
NBC added:
“I am committed to retaining the best of what it means to be a Mennonite college, while opening the doors wider to all who share our core values,” Brenneman said. “And I invite others to join us at Goshen College as we make peace in all of its forms, even with the national anthem.”
Art professor John Blosser told The Goshen News that there is much national pride at the school, but that most people aren’t going to blindly accept what the country does.
NBC Sports’ Rick Chandler weighed in, saying: “I suppose we could have followed the example of the Mennonites and simply fled, giving the nation back to the British. But then we’d all be playing cricket.”
One also wonders why Goshen was not content with just the elimination of the lyrics but had to go so far as to remove any trace of The Star-Spangled Banner’s melody from the school.
It could also be argued that the religious freedom afforded by the U.S. is the very reason Mennonites and other “diverse” communities flocked here, and that spurning the National Anthem seems both hypocritical and perhaps even ungrateful.
For in the words of our nation’s anthem:
Blest with vict’ry and peace, may the Heav’n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust;”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Posted on August 26, 2011 at 6:46pmAbsolutely no different to candidate Obama saying he’d prefer “I’d like to teach the world to sing” as the national anthem because the Star Spangled Banner is too violent. Look it up if you don’t believe me. Leftists hate shows of patriotism. They choose to call it “jingoism”. This college’s edict falls squarely into that line of leftist thought that America is flawed and must be corrected. This is why the left successfully eroded civics out of school teaching.

Posted on August 26, 2011 at 6:49pmBOBBER nailed it…The college receives federal funding. If they don’t like the national anthem, they can give up their federal funding that tax payers who love the national anthem paid into. In the interest of “diverse constituences” of course. Call your GOP congressman and let’s add it to the list of cost cuts.

Posted on August 26, 2011 at 7:04pmWell the best way to settle it is to ban Goshen College and it’s board of directors from being American. Probably the part that is too violent to them is the part that says:
Then conquer we must, when our cause is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
After all if we are triumphant when we trust in God, that would be too violent because that would mean someone that isn’t for God has lost and that would undermine “Diverse constituencies”
Therefore as God is our Trust, perhaps we should ban Goshen College, maybe even send it back to the “Land of Goshen”

As a native of the Goshen area and someone who still participates in the community, I am no fan of Goshen College. They are extremely liberal there and I question much of what they do. But they have EVERY RIGHT to play or not play any song they wish. Just because they receive state and federal funds is not a requirement that they play a song. This is the problem with ANY federal monies going to private institutions, it always comes with strings, real or perceived. They are free to play whatever song they like at their own games (I happen to think America, the Beautiful is a great song, though there is a verse that speaks to war – how does that fit their “values”). Then the community and prospective students and parents have the right to determine if their values match the college.

Dhimmitude
It’s on page 107 of the Affordable Healthcare Act.
Dhimmitude is the Muslim system of controlling non-Muslim populations conquered through jihad. Specifically, it is the TAXING of non-Muslims in exchange for tolerating their presence AND as a coercive means of converting conquered remnants to Islam.
The AHA allows the establishment of Dhimmitude and Sharia Muslim diktat in the United States. Muslims are specifically exempted from the government mandate to purchase insurance, and also from the penalty tax for being uninsured.
Report Post »Islam considers insurance to be “gambling”, “risk-taking”, and “usury” and is thus banned.
Muslims are specifically granted exemption based on this mandate.

Obama continued: “The National Anthem should be ‘swapped’ for something less parochial and less bellicose. I like the song ‘I’d Like To Teach the World To Sing’. If that were our anthem, then, I might salute it. In my opinion, we should consider reinventing our National Anthem as well as ‘redesign’ our Flag to better offer our enemies hope and love. It’s my intention, if elected, to disarm America to the level of acceptance to our Middle East Brethren. If we, as a Nation of waring people, conduct ourselves like the nations of Islam, where peace prevails – - – perhaps astate or period of mutual accord could exist between our governments …..”
When I become President, I will seek a pact of agreement to end hostilities between those who have been at war or in a state of enmity, and a freedom from disquieting oppressive thoughts. We as a Nation, have placed upon the nations of Islam, an unfair injustice which is WHY my wife disrespects the Flag and she and I have attended several flag burning ceremonies in the past”.
