Update: Indiana College Now Bans National Anthem Melody, Not Just Words

Update: Indiana College Bans National Anthem for Being Too Violent

First, The Blaze reported that a tiny, 1,000-student Mennonite school in Indiana banned the words to the National Anthem, now however, Goshen College has banned the song in its entirety — melody and all.

According to Goshen’s president, Jim Brenneman, the words to The Star-Spangled Banner were “too violent.” The reasonable explanation being that the Mennonite faith reportedly endorses pacifism.

While the school band was allowed to continue playing the tune to the National Anthem, even that is now apparently too much.

The school’s board of directors allegedly told Brenneman to “find an alternative to playing the National Anthem that fits with sports tradition, that honors country and that resonates with Goshen College’s core values and respects the views of diverse constituencies.”

Diverse constituencies.

In a June statement regarding the banned lyrics, Brenneman stated, “I am convinced that Goshen College is on a challenging and rewarding journey toward becoming a more diverse institution that serves an increasingly diverse community.”

“I am hopeful that this resolution will help Goshen College move forward together, and focus on finding new ways to welcome students from our local and regional community.”

NBC added:

“I am committed to retaining the best of what it means to be a Mennonite college, while opening the doors wider to all who share our core values,” Brenneman said. “And I invite others to join us at Goshen College as we make peace in all of its forms, even with the national anthem.”

Art professor John Blosser told The Goshen News that there is much national pride at the school, but that most people aren’t going to blindly accept what the country does.

NBC Sports’ Rick Chandler weighed in, saying: “I suppose we could have followed the example of the Mennonites and simply fled, giving the nation back to the British. But then we’d all be playing cricket.”

One also wonders why Goshen was not content with just the elimination of the lyrics but had to go so far as to remove any trace of The Star-Spangled Banner’s melody from the school.

It could also be argued that the religious freedom afforded by the U.S. is the very reason Mennonites and other “diverse” communities flocked here, and that spurning the National Anthem seems both hypocritical and perhaps even ungrateful.

For in the words of our nation’s anthem:

Blest with vict’ry and peace, may the Heav’n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust;”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

      I just looked at their financial statement, and they receive a ton of funds from the USA Government (meaning us)…maybe – if they don‘t want to be part of our country’s heritage, we should stop sending our dollars to them in support.

      Absolutely no different to candidate Obama saying he’d prefer “I’d like to teach the world to sing” as the national anthem because the Star Spangled Banner is too violent. Look it up if you don’t believe me. Leftists hate shows of patriotism. They choose to call it “jingoism”. This college’s edict falls squarely into that line of leftist thought that America is flawed and must be corrected. This is why the left successfully eroded civics out of school teaching.

      BOBBER nailed it…The college receives federal funding. If they don’t like the national anthem, they can give up their federal funding that tax payers who love the national anthem paid into. In the interest of “diverse constituences” of course. Call your GOP congressman and let’s add it to the list of cost cuts.

      Well the best way to settle it is to ban Goshen College and it’s board of directors from being American. Probably the part that is too violent to them is the part that says:

      Then conquer we must, when our cause is just,
      And this be our motto: “In God is our trust”
      And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
      O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

      After all if we are triumphant when we trust in God, that would be too violent because that would mean someone that isn’t for God has lost and that would undermine “Diverse constituencies”

      Therefore as God is our Trust, perhaps we should ban Goshen College, maybe even send it back to the “Land of Goshen”

      My parents live about 1/2 mile from this college. How do ya think a megaphone will sound just outside on a public sidewalk singing as loud as l can the words of our national anthem? I am so proud to be an American and will not apologize or tone it down!

      I believe they have every right to construct the activities allowed –that having been said — I could Not support any institution that does not support the symbols of the Nation that has provided for them.
      The flag is not allowed in certain schools.The Pledge of allegiance -neglected–or disallowed( yet it was Red Skelton’s tribute broadcast in 69 that preceeded my enlistment in the US Army– Oh I would have enlisted anyhow but that symbolic gesture still means something to me . The National Motto- first added to our coin after the bloody Civil War. then finally recognized as our national Motto. The Great Seal . Our Fundamental laws (Mayflower compact, Northwest Ordinance etc. )
      These codify that fundamental idea Religion ,Morality, and Knowledge ,being necessary to good government and the happiness of mankind, schools and the means of education shall forever be encouraged. I am as sorry that the personal notion /bias of a few would disallow such. As I am that we are a people that have forgotten God Our neglect of the foundation is the problem And this sin of omission by one institute is no more offensive than the war against Christian Morality by the ACLU or its useful idiots.

      Yes! It’s time to bring back Red Skelton”s tribute broadcast. I can still remember it and feel the chills down my arms thinking about it and how moving it was. I’ve seen clips of it several times over the years and get the same feeling. Oh, how I remember the pride we all showed and felt with our Country.

      What the article isn’t saying is they have chosen to play America, the Beautiful before each game. As a native of the Goshen area and someone who still participates in the community, I am no fan of Goshen College. They are extremely liberal there and I question much of what they do. But they have EVERY RIGHT to play or not play any song they wish. Just because they receive state and federal funds is not a requirement that they play a song. This is the problem with ANY federal monies going to private institutions, it always comes with strings, real or perceived. They are free to play whatever song they like at their own games (I happen to think America, the Beautiful is a great song, though there is a verse that speaks to war – how does that fit their “values”). Then the community and prospective students and parents have the right to determine if their values match the college.

    They could always go back to the song that was used before the Star Spangled Banner became our national anthem. That song was “Columbia, the gem of the ocean”.
    Remember, The Star Spangled Banner was not used as our national anthem until I believe the 1924 Olympics. (and if I remember the story correctly, the piano player played the anthem of each gold medal winner’s country during the award ceremonies, and when it came to the U S, he didn’t like “Columbia”, thought The Star Spangled Banner was better, and played that instead).

    These Mennonites (and the Amish too) benefit from the freedoms others have given their lives for over the past 200 years since the American Revolution and they have the gall to sneer at the National Anthem. I hope these hypocrites don‘t take tax dollars from the USA government in anyway shape or form to finance their school or pay the tuition of their school’s students.

    It would appear that those making the decisions wish to turn a blind eye and ear to the history of our country. Pretending violence doesn‘t exist doesn’t protect anyone from it. Just ask the Amish community who lost so many little girlsin school at the hands of a monster.       Its beyond not sending your kids there or stopping any finl donations. Alumni need to step and condemn this,vendors that deal with the school should pull out immediately, all sports games should be canceled by schools that would normally be competing with the university, students should walk out. An all out boycott of the school internally and externally should be taking place. Anyone that works there SHAME on you! I know times are tough but there is no excuse or explanation for this. It doesnt get anymore Anti-American than this. This institution should come to a halt by way of “peaceful” revolution.     A mennonite coller???? What do you study there? How to wear black and handle horse reigns. Perhaps butter churning and cheese cloth weaving. Their biggest class is how to be completely unthankful and traitorous to your nation and cover it with religion.

      The melodies for many songs then, as now, are/were taken from older popular songs. I’ll sure drink to the Star Spangled Banner.

    Private school (business)? If so, they can do what they want… let the people decide if they want to give of their money. I don’t like it, but like anything else, if I don‘t like the stance of a company I don’t use their product.
