Update: Iranian Warships Test New Egyptian Military Regime

Iran has submitted an official request to move two of its armed warships through the Suez Canal, an Egyptian official confirmed to CNN Thursday.Update: Iranian Warships Test New Egyptian Military Regime

Ahmed El-Manakhly, the transit director of the Suez Canal, announced earlier Thursday that no such request had been made, but Iranian state-run television confirmed that the two warships were en route, making their way from the Red Sea into the Mediterranean.

The move puts Egypt’s post-Mubarak military regime in a testy situation with neighbor Israel. If approved, it would mark the first time Iranian military ships sailed through the Suez Canal since the Islamic republic’s 1979 revolution.

The Egyptian official told CNN that permission will likely be granted. But Egypt might find itself in muddy water over the Suez.

The canal is an internal body of water and as such, Egypt has sovereignty over it. But Egypt also is bound by the 1976 Camp David Accords, which guaranteed the right of free passage by ships belonging to Israel and all other nations on the basis of the Constantinople Convention of 1888. Before that, Egypt did not allow Israeli ships to sail through the canal.

Last week, Egypt’s military government said it would honor all its international treaties. That would include Camp David.

Now it finds itself in the position of allowing ships belonging to the sworn enemy of their peace treaty partner to sail through.  “This is awkward — at a minimum,” said David Schenker, director of the Program on Arab Politics at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.

Schenker said the Iranian want a frigate — the Alvand — and a military supply ship — the Kharg — to cross into the Mediterranean. Both are armed with missiles, he said. Their passage would create more uncertainty in the region.  “It’s destabilizing. It raises tension, particularly in this time of transition in Egypt,” Schenker said. “This is typical of Syrian-Iranian opportunism.”

The Obama administration could pressure Egypt’s military regime to keep Iran at bay, but will they?  One thing is for certain: how Egypt’s new military regime responds will offer a glimpse to how it will treat existing treaties with both the United States and Israel.

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman said the two Iranian military vessels had been expected to sail Wednesday night through the Suez on their way to Syria.  “This is a provocation that proves that the self-confidence and insolence of the Iranians is growing from day to day,” he said Wednesday. “This happens after the Iranian president’s visit to south Lebanon and his aggressive declarations there towards Israel.”

Liberman did not mention Egypt by name but said Israel’s allies should pay close attention to the situation.  “We expect the international community to act speedily with determination against the Iranian provocations, designed to deteriorate the situation in the area, and put the Iranians in their place,” he said.

On Wednesday, national security experts suggested Israel could respond to Iran’s provocation with action of their own:

U.S. State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley Thursday suggested only that the United States was monitoring the mounting situation.

In addition, the geographical position of the Suez Canal is also pivotal for the global oil market.  Initial reports of Iranian passage caused oil prices to increase slightly Wednesday.

    Here‘s how it’s going to play out:
    (Ezekiel 38:16) You will come up against My people Israel like a cloud, to cover the land. It will be in the latter days that I will bring you against My land, so that the nations may know Me, when I am hallowed in you, O Gog, before their eyes.” (Ezekiel 38:22) “And I will bring him to judgment with pestilence and bloodshed; I will rain down on him, on his troops, and on the many peoples who are with him, flooding rain, great hailstones, fire, and brimstone. (Ezekiel 39:7) So I will make My holy name known in the midst of My people Israel, and I will not let them profane My holy name anymore. Then the nations shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel. (Isaiah 17:1) The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from [being] a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap. {Damascus, Syria has never been destroyed since it was built, ever.} ( Eze 39:3) “Then I will knock the bow out of your left hand, and cause the arrows to fall out of your right hand. THOSE IRANIANS ARE MESSING WITH GOD‘S PEOPLE AND IT’S NOT NICE TO PISS YAWEH OFF. allah won‘t be able to help them when Yaw’ is pissed. Just sayin’ …….

    Ahmedinejad is a delusional psychotic who has lost his grip on reality. It is obvious from the crazed comments he makes; and his actions seem held back, but foreboding. I think he is holding back and he will eventually unleash his pent up fury and psychosis on Israel and us. It’s one thing to make fun of him, he deserves a good mocking, but this crazed lunatic is gaining power. If this man obtains the ability, he will kill and murder on the same massive scale as Hitler. To make matters worse, our leaders are living in fantasy land, lost in hopeless ideology, and detached from reality. The Obama admin’ is profoundly naïve and unwilling to see the deadly situation he is causing In the Middle East. We are screwed!

    Let’s see… What was Obama’s response when a solidly democratic nation and one of our closest allies and trading partners in Asia had a frigate sunk by a submarine from a rogue nation ruled by a despot with a burgeoning nuclear arsenal without provocation? Oh yeah, nothing. Now consider what his response would be if a frigate from a rogue nation ruled by a despot with a burgeoning nuclear arsenal was sunk by a submarine of a democratic nation and one of our closest allies in the middle east that has been threatened with destruction and seriously provoked? I wonder…

    The only reason they haven’t leveled Iran already is because we begged them not to. If Obama doesn’t act, then Israel will. With Iraq’s military out of the way, who can stop them? Obama doesn’t have the clout with Israel to hold them at bay much longer. In a few years, my son will ask me if Iran was a real country and where on the map it was.

      I am sure most of us are praying for peace, but that should not eliminate planning for war. Unfortunately, the POTUS has shown time and time again, he will rule against the majority of the electorate and defy the Constitutional limits on government. They have done more to weaken the U.S. and embolden enemies in the last two years than the previous 2-3 administrations have done and that is no small statement. As all this materializes, it really makes you wonder about those foundational years with guidance from his Muslim father and step-father doesn’t it. It also shows the disrespect for Israel/Netanyahu 6 months into his term may have been for a reason that was not yet disclosed. Of course he back tracked, but if you look at his actions now, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see who he is befriending.

      @Butch,

      “Iran” is not in the bible either, but some of us are smart enough to read between the lines and translate was was written thousands of years ago into today’s terms and countries. If we took the bible literally as it is written well then we would say that none of it applies today since it does not mention any modern nations except for a small handful.

      The evil blinking bat says that all of these demonstrations are being managed by the Mahdi, but what about the protest in his own country? Are those the only exception? They don‘t fit into his fanatical twelver eschatology so now he’s sending war ships through the Sueze, as a provocation as he is too little of a man to launch an all out attack on Israel, to try to unify his country against their common enemy. He’d rather subtly act and hope that Israel acts first so that he can be viewed as the victim and receive the support of the international community.

      Don’t forget the most important thing: the sheer unadulterated backup of our God himself. Just remember this when Obama comes out and berates Israel tomorrow as part of this UN “statement” against Israel’s “continued settlements”.

      What do we do when EVERY chance we have to defend Israel both physically and verbally, our “leader” comes out on the wrong side? I’m honestly asking a question. Because I don’t want to be on the side that God himself has said will be destroyed but if I stand by as a citizen and allow myself to be part of a movement against Israel, does that make me an accomplice?

      This is a horrible position to be in. And I know deep down that our support for Israel is only going down the tubes at every opportunity. What do I/we do?

      A show of determined resistance is a good idea, but one must be sober in one’s actions and not up the provocation. WW1 started in this way (well, ok, it was a bit more complicated than that but you get my point, I expect).

      On the other hand, the Iranians are moral cowards and when the gunsights swing onto them, they will almost certainly back away, just as Qaddaffi did.

      This will not end well for anyone. The Iranians are now looking for creative ways to divert attention from what’s happening in the streets of Tehran. The entire region is in complete chaos at this point. I couldn’t even imagine what it must be like inside Israel right now.

      @Hawt’

      Most likely he smells like a combination of musk ox scent and essense of skunk oil after it has been covered in limburgher cheese for many a summer month.

      Israel is always 24/7/365 on full alert. Have been for many moons. One must when every one of your direct neighbors has hatred for you and your people for the past 6000 years.

      Either Egyptian Army, pushed by the USA, or the USA if turned down by the Egypt, should take over and either should repeat Gandalf’s words from the Lord of the Rings:
      “The dark fire will not avail you….Go back to the shadow. YOU SHALL NOT PASS!”

      @The Torch

      Something needs to be done indeed; Iranian warships would be a provocation that Israel cannot nor will ignore in the least. All that Iran‘s nutjob leader needs is any perceived ’attack’ on the ships, and real or not, the international community – including our own beloved POTUS – would come down so hard on them as not to be funny in the least.

I wonder…

      godlovinmom;

      Your concern is warranted. WE, unfortunately, have a community organizer-in-chief who is used to intimidating US corporations. He is a coward, and continues to vote ‘present’.

      I suspect you stopped taking your psych meds. You are complimenting an evil little dirt-bag and you seem perfectly comfortable with it. Or do you have a thing for evil little dirt-bags?

      I fully suspect an Israeli “escort committee” will accompany these Iranian crafts to Syria. It seems clear to me that this has every bit as much to do with splitting loyalties in Iranian domestic politics as it does feeling out Egypt’s new military regime. Iran is playing a dangerous game, as I have every confidence Israel could lay waste to the entire middle east if they saw fit. My suspicion is that Egypt’s reliance on international tourism, US military aid (and spare parts), and the threat of Israel turning the Aswan Dam and the Nile into a science experiment, will prevent Egypt (specifically) from ever taking on Israel directly. I think this is about as far as Egypt can likely go to cause trouble in this new world…and that being the case, I think Israel is quite capable of defending itself.

      nzkiwi, your comment was short but showed deeper comprehension than any other I’ve seen on this topic on this website. The Arab world has changed, and they’re seeing what the new boundaries are.

      I think Iran is an incredible danger to world, because the country is run by religious leaders who believe they know the Will of God. During the Cuban missile crisis, Kennedy, a Christian (Catholic), wasn’t thinking about the Will of God, he was thinking about the real world consequences of initiating a nuclear war. Khrushchev was equally pragmatic.

      I’m not afraid – at all – of Iran because they’re a predominately Muslim country. I’m afraid of any country, including our own, whose Government believes they have special knowledge of what God wants and are guided by that rather than what they see as they see as the greatest good for the greatest number, which I believe is what I believe Jesus taught.

      Disclaimer. Blazers, my post in no way represents the opinion of nzkiwi. They mine and mine alone. The only connection is that I appreciated nzkiwi’s post.
