Update: Iraq War Vet Injured in Occupy Oakland Awaiting Brain Surgery

Scott Olsen, bleeding from a head wound during the Occupy Oakland riots Tuesday, is now awaiting surgery.

The Iraq War veteran injured during the police crackdown on the Occupy Oakland riots earlier this week is now awaiting brain surgery, the Guardian reported.

Scott Olsen, 24, suffered a fractured skull and brain swelling after he was struck by an apparent police projectile Tuesday night. His condition has since been upgraded from “critical” to “fair” and he is now reportedly conscious as he awaits surgery.

A hospital spokesman said Olsen, who served two tours in Iraq, “responded with a very large smile” when his parents came to visit.

“He‘s able to understand what’s going on. He’s able to write and hear but has a little difficulty with his speech,” the spokesman said.

According to the Guardian, doctors had not operated yet because they were waiting to see whether the swelling in his brain would ease.

Olsen’s injuries prompted solidarity marches and vigils at various Occupy protests around the country Thursday, including in New York City at the Occupy Wall Street demonstration.

Oakland police denied using rubber bullets or flashbang grenades to quell demonstrations, though admitted to firing tear gas canisters into the rioting crowd. Protesters claimed police shot rubber bullets and bean bags, and photos of Olsen taken when he was first injured appear to show flashbangs may have been used.

In response to the incident, Occupy Marines — an organization that sprang up to support the Occupy movement — issued a formal list of demands Thursday:

OccupyMARINES Have Watched Closely The Response From The OPD, The Mayor, The Governor, And All Others Involved In The Oakland Attack On Peaceful Demonstrators; We Have Observed These Pathetic Cowards Refuse Responsibility For Their Actions That May Very Well Alter The Course Of Our Brother’s Life. Additionally, Many Other Police Departments Nationwide Deploy Similar Riot Tactics Against Demonstrators Honoring The OWS 8, A Peaceful Declaration Of Assembly; We Will Organize Peacefully Against These Departments.

In Response To The Oakland Shooting Of Scott Olsen OccupyMARINES Request The Following:

  • The GOP Cowards Responsible For Influencing This Event Be Brought To Justice. Track Names And Photos Of Each And Email Them To Us
  • Identify The 300 OPD Riot Officers By Name, Photo, And Badge Number With Boots On The Ground Engaging In Illegal Excessive Force Acts Against Peaceful Americans For Prosecution.
  • Identify The Officer Responsible For Harming Scott Olsen By Name And Photo For Prosecution.
  • The Honorable Resignation Of Oakland Mayor Jean Quan And Acting Police Chief Howard Jordan.
  • A Public Apology From California Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. For The Unlawful Injury Of Our Brother Scott Olsen.
We Fully Intend To Make An Example, Leaglly And Peacefully, Of The Corwards Associated With Harming An American Veteran. We Will Not Stop Until Our Aforementioned Demands Are Met In Their Entirity.

Oakland acting police chief Howard Jordan promised a thorough investigation into Tuesday’s events. Oakland Mayor Jean Quan, who authorized the raid, has since distanced herself from the police, Business Insider reported.

“I only asked the chief to do one thing: to do it when it was the safest for both the police and the demonstrators,” Quan said.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Quan visited Olsen in the hospital Thursday, telling him she was sorry for what happened and repeating Jordan’s promise of an investigation.

“I wish that it didn’t happen,” Jordan said. “Our goal, obviously, is not to cause injury to anyone….We regret that this injury happened.”

Quan allowed Occupy protesters to set up their encampments again Thursday, after they were cleared out following Tuesday’s riots.

      @ SITONITSOROS1: I agree that someone is not telling the truth, it was probably one of the rocks or bottles that the protesters were throwing at the police that hit him in the head. The Mayor of Oakland is a coward, and apologizing to the victim is a nice gesture, but at the same time he throwing Oakland Police Officers under the bus. What a coward.

As for these protesters..there were many protesting different things from the Federal Reserve to the top 1%.Some I understand were Tea Partiers..The thing is..the one that Schiff argued with was just a dumbed down lefty.     I do hope this man makes a full recovery. HOWEVER, has anyone looked into the possiblity that his injuries are a direct result of the crowd of OCCUPIERS. Could it be that an occupier somehow did this thereby setting up the police for the fall? Perhaps someone will ask this man when he is able to respond.

      I didn’t think he was so close to the fence. Looking at videos, he was very near the police barricade.

      Sometimes the protesters weren’t waiting for the flash before they ran to pick up the charges to toss them back at the police. I’d be wary of the flash going off in my hand, and possibly causing head injury to myself before I could throw it back at the police.

      I read where a person watching a riot or student disturbance on Green Street off of the University of Illinois campus. The location was the intersection of 6th street & Green street. He was struck by a bottle & it caused brain damage. It happened in the late 1970s or early to mid 1980s. I’m trying to find an article in the student newspaper that mentioned it.

      I want to a see a slow motion video of the who incident & not just the “innocent” agitators are showing ( a film that start with him already on the ground.

      If police are firing rubber bullets there should be rubber bullets on the ground to pick up. If there are some now after we ask are they planted? I would like to see a news crew pick them up soon after they land.

    This so called occupy Marine group smells of Van Jones, I really doubt that these people are even marines or have ever came near a recruiting office. It’s all about image and what the organizers can do to get the Media to sell the idea that their movement represents all of America even the Military. This young man may have been in the military but I have not herd one confirmation on this yet so until I do I am not buying it. He placed himself in a place where he could have gotten hurt and he did so now this is a outrage? no someone risked their personal safety and got hurt that‘s why it’s a risk. As for the military angle sorry I was a Leftist activist in my youth and I know their tactics this a illusion they don’t have military activist groups supporting them if there are any former military people involved they are very few of them.       Its against regulations to demonstrate or make outwardly political statements ( even going so far as frowning upon candidate bumper stickers) on post so in answer to your question no he wouldnt have done this on base. unlikely that fellow marines would say or do much of anything but superior officers and base command would almost certainly say something.

I do not believe these protestors are enemies i think they are Americans exercising there first amendment rights. The real enemies are our corrupt political leaders and those who support them.

      As a former active duty Marine (97-02), I hate to see any brother get hurt even if he hated the Corps (good luck pronouncing that one, Mr. President). But you ought to know the risk you take when you stand with bottle and rock throwing agitators. He was probably put into the danger zone due to his being a veteran. If they used bean bags, rubber bullets, and tear gas, then there were other injuries that I would bet are not mentioned because the background of those agitators isn’t as sympathetic.

      RUONCRACK-What would a Canadian know about 1st amendment rights, you have no right to free speech in Canada. He has the right to peaceably assemble, not to participate in a riot. Attacking police or anybody with bottles, rocks, etc..is not protected speech. He got what he deserved.

      OWS wants to abolish the constitution. They want to take from those that have earned their living and give it to people who are not willing to do anything.     Gosh who would have ever thought that standing in a riot at night and refusing to obey law enforcement orders would result in an injury. Maybe walking home when told would have been smart. Hmmm.     on Drudge it is reported a CNN camera shot showed the guy being hit with a brick being thrown AT the police.

      ”occupymarines” sounds like a communist hate-America group.. they have a ”list of demands” like they want all the “GOP COWARDS” and names and addresses and photos of the cops involved etc. also there was a lot of veiled threats to the police, mayor and governor etc.

      their hateful psychotic ”list of demands” is also horribly misspelled all the way through it too like a communist 3rd World 2nd grader wrote it up.

      You’d be surprised how many military members are abhored by the “sheepdog” cops treating the civilians- who’s rights they believed the fought for- trampled by these Nazis in blue uniforms.

      They aren’t happy, and a great deal of them support Ron Paul.
