Update: LSU Professor Warns Students Global Warming Will Cause ‘Ugly Deaths’

…and if you’re skeptical of global warming and unwilling to make serious sacrifices, LSU’s Dr. Bradley Schaefer warns that the “ugly deaths” of your children will all be your fault!
In another astonishing video from Campus Reform, the professor’s exercise continues, asking students if they‘d be willing to limit the number of future children they’ll have and how much in new taxes they’d be willing to pay in order to save the planet. But for the group of students who are skeptical of the theory, he openly mocks and laughs at them as he singles them out from the rest of the class:
Click here to see part one.
In defense of his classroom example, Dr. Schaefer, an astronomy professor, said he was wrongly being targeted by conservative students who released the excerpts of his lecture on climate change.
“What I was doing was very intentional. I was posing all sides of how to handle global warming, and I was challenging all sides of it, too,” Schaefer told The Associated Press. He argued the clips misrepresent his point, which was to provoke discussion about climate change policy. Schaefer said that he gave equal criticism to students with other points of view. …
Michael L. Cherry, chairman of the department of physics and astronomy, told The Chronicle of Higher Education that Schaefer “is an extremely exuberant and enthusiastic teacher who consistently gets very strong student evaluations.” Still, he noted that the video didn’t paint the professor in the best light.
“I will confess that while this film was heavily edited, it looks pretty embarrassing. I think it’s probably fair to say he was not sufficiently sensitive and was overly enthusiastic.”
The dean of LSU’s College of Science, Kevin Carman, said no student has complained about the lecture and no action will be taken against Schaefer.
Meanwhile, Campus Reform — a program of the conservative Leadership Institute — is inviting people to make up their own minds by watching Dr. Schaefer’s full unedited 40-min lecture, which can be found here.

Posted on November 19, 2010 at 7:53amI dunno, but it’s easy to say that QEII is more a danger to my children and the well being of the planet than trumped up climate data. I remember playing in the Illinois River as a kid in the 1970′s downstream from Chicago, OMG! Back when I cried and cried because our weekly reader told us the Midwest was going to be too cold for Summer and we’d never be able to swim because of “Global Cooling”. The “interesting clumps of foam” that floated by and the stench……we absolutely SHOULD be as clean and like the Boy Scouts leave our campground cleaner than we found it. The American people that are responsible in living their lives(paying their OWN way and their kids) are good stewards of the environment-it’s just how it is, we don’t need to be preached to or convinced. Shut the heck up and actually teach the Astronomy Class.

Posted on November 21, 2010 at 7:59pmI don’t believe William James or Goebbels are correct that belief can be created simply by repitition. But it does have relevence to the process of belief formation which is critical to those who seek the truth and to those who for whatever reason desire to influence the beliefs held by others.
We are now facing a historic inflection point on a global scale. The religion of Environmentalism is but one of an endless number of the examples of “bad faith” which are emerging in this environment where faith and responsibility have been abandoned at all levels of society. Without understanding this your search for the truth becomes enslaving.

There have been climate changes on this planet since the beginning of time. Although things will have some effect on our climate, no where near what the fearmongers put forth. A good thing would be for a lot more trees to be planted. The trees take in carbon dioxide and give off oxygen in return. Too simple for congress? But then what isn’t? More scientists are claiming the latter point of view for your information, so doing a little research might expand your own mind before you start berating your student’s.

Posted on November 19, 2010 at 1:42amWhat these students probably don’t realize is that hype of this type has gone on for years. Here is the latest theory…the LSU Professor is behind the times. Now we are cooling:
Triple Crown of global cooling could pose serious threat to humanity
May 19th, 2010 2:31 pm ET.
A big cool-down may be on its way if there is major eruption of Iceland’s Katla volcano.
“Global warming” may become one of those quaint cocktail party conversations of the past if three key climate drivers – cooling North Pacific sea surface temperatures, extremely low solar activity and increased volcanic eruptions – converge to form a “perfect storm” of plummeting temperatures that send our planet into a long-term cool-down lasting 20 or 30 years or longer.
“There are some wild cards that are different from what we saw when we came out of the last warm PDO [Pacific Decadal Oscillation] and entered its cool phase [1947 to 1976]. Now we have a very weak solar cycle and the possibility of increased volcanic activity. Together, they would create what I call the ‘Triple Crown of Cooling,’” says Accuweather meteorologist Joe Bastardi.
Well, now we have the second volcano in Indonesia that is erupting,
And don’t forget, in years past, we were losing the ozone layer and we were all going to be crispy critters.

Posted on November 19, 2010 at 1:21amI think the Professor did a good job, from the video you can see the option seating chart and students placed themselves according to where they wanted to sit to make a statement. In no way does this video stress that the students actually sat in a specific side because of their true opinions. In narration, the video does not in force their believes or rebuttals from the Professor on their specific standpoint. If this was a class established to hear the different views on a specific topic or to make the issues a debatable, then the Professor is not only a good teacher but quite an actor. If this video actually did come from their point of view on science, the facts and not the chaotic premier Al Gore provided, I would have to disagree with the Professor. You cannot make a logical stance when the information provided is from one source and is considered non-debatable from a political mind set. Sorry Al. it is debatable.

However, if this is man-made, then what about the last mini ice age, was that man-made from all of the wood stoves and whale oil burning? Or, perhaps the global famine during what most people think of as biblical times (circa 2500 B.C.E.)? It had the same global effects with the same temperatures, was that because the Sumerians/Babylonians were driving around in their SUVs too much?

No body on this website can understand a true scientific paper, and that is a shame. The amount of data and research that goes into atmospheric models is quite extensive, and there is no way some one here can understand it. The math and physics you need to understand this is lost on the public. We as a country need to invest it science and math to make sure future generations can understand what is exactly happening. Before anyone denounces a theory (Yes evolutions is a theory but so is gravity) you need to present VALID arguments against it. I would LOVE for someone here to present an atmospheric model telling me CO2 doesn’t cause a green house effect. I may sound like a “crazy liberal” but I am actually an astrophysics student so I think I know a few more things about atmospheres and numerical models than most people. So please, present me with code that contradicts our best atmospheric models. While you are at it, please present some code disproving gravity, or quantum mechanics, because THAT IS THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD! Just because you don’t believe something, doesn’t mean you understand it. I dare Mr. Beck to read ANY scientific paper. He won’t understand the first two lines of the abstract.
