Update: Oakland Mayor Jean Quan Allows Occupiers to Reclaim City Just Two Days After Riots

Police are standing down as Oakland Mayor Jean Quan allows the “occupiers” to reclaim the city and, presumably set up encampments yet again. The turn of events comes a mere two days after riots swept the city.

“I’m a mayor of a city that has divided opinions on some things,” Quan said. “I think most support the Occupy Wall Street movement. I know you guys don’t like that I look at things day by day, situation by situation. We’re going to do what keeps most people safe.”

NBC provides the report:

Oakland Mayor doesn’t want to “dis” his peeps. Those are real votes out their and he wants to keep his job. Best of all the wealth is going to get re-distributed (looted) and all he has to do is “get out of the way” like the TEA party keeps telling him.

    See what I did there?

DFL only get out of the way when its convenient, or buying votes. Free handouts for the “roots” without costing the .gov a dime. DFL only enforce the laws if they benefit from it.

    It’s all good bro!

These people want to continue, this leftist mayor is going to let them, we‘re all told these AREN’T Marxists, and to top it all off, while they bash capitalism, they beg for more money? Does that sum this up? Money is evil, they tell us, while demanding more?

TOTO- I totally agree with you. Keith Doberman was on one of the local No Ca radio stations today and he pretty much said that she should resign. She claims that she did not know what was going on while she was out of town and found out about it on the plane back to the Bay Area. She pretty much left the city in the hands of others who made the call for the OPD to shut the encampment down (which I totally support). She now is trying to save face. If I were a small business and/or a resident of the Oakland, I would be demanding her resignation as well as threatening to sue for lost wages and damaged property.

When Mayor Quan calls for back up I hope the only thing she hears is sound of her screams echoing off the walls as they take every ounce of dignity she has left and lets her know exactly who she has supporting.

GHOST says, “Stay calm, count your supplies.” Ghost I‘m glad you’re encouraging people to prepare for the end times. Okay, I’ll stay calm. Have you stored a gallon/day/person in your supplies in case the water supply fails in the insurrection? Have much water do you have when the water supply fails? Best to be prepared!

And Lord of the Rings is your analogy de jour? Were the elves capitalists or communists? A wealthy few elves with a middle class and large group of poor elves? They shared everything equally didn’t they? And the hobbits? Commerce was mentioned in the book, but I don’t recall any gross economic equality.

But the accruing wealth and power of Sauron is a theme in the book, much like, in my humble opinion, what we are seeing in the US today and have for the last 30 years. We have the common folks, the hobbits, the elves, the Rohirrim and citizens of Gondor facing the growing power of the Evil one. Those who work for the common good, the good of everyone in Middle Earth – something you mock – facing those who would work to concentrate power into the hands of the wealthy and powerful.

I’ll put my bet on those who work for the common good, the good of all the Earth.

      Your analogy is backwards.

BOTTOM UP … TOP DOWN …

The Progressives (communists) are the mobs and are in the government. The Police are ordered to back off and let the riots happen. You NEED to know what is going on and WHY it is happening THAT WAY:

“DICTATORSHIP PLAN For America 2012!! :: Glenn Beck Names The TRAITORS & Exposes Their CONSPIRACY!!”

“They will collapse our system under a cover strategy — BOTTOM UP – TOP DOWN – INSIDE OUT. They need you to rise UP. That’s why they have thugs and marxists, to create the chaos. Then you will beg the complicit government, ‘I want to be secure, come DOWN’. But if you’re on to them, don’t call them, what will they do? What did Octavia do? Roman is a Republic that falls into chaos. The BOTTOM rises UP, ‘make it stop, Octavia’. So he comes DOWN, but he leaves the illusion of a Republic.”

We could err on the side of conservatism (giving him the benefit of doubt) and say he just bent to pressure, knowing if he does try to enforce the rule of no camping, there will be more riots. I thought we didn’t negotiate with terrorists? I saw none of this at the tea party I went to. I saw families with picnic blankets spread out, everyone “left no trace” as they say in the scouts, picking up anything that dropped, sometimes not even their own.

And what happened when the hobbits returned to the Shire? The greedy capitalist hobbits had cut down all the trees and polluted the streams. They had despoiled the land. So the Shire was scoured clean, and returned to the common folk. Trees were planted, each with a grain of soil from the Good Lady. And they all lived happily ever after.

      Hi JZS

It’s funny to me that you know so little about J.R.R. Tolkien and his personal beliefs, let alone how he translated and communicated them through his numerous works. Here’s a hint big guy; there are people who actually study authors and their influences and writing, heck, there are entire majors with classes devoted to studying various works and their influences that you can take, gasp, in college. You should give one a try sometime!

It suits your purpose to sneer and mock, but in mocking you display your own historical and literary ignorance for all to see, all the while thinking that you’re being witty and intellectual. When you realize your error I’d be happy to discuss any given canonical fiction writer or enlightenment philosopher you feel you need to learn more about.

Mocking what you clearly don’t understand. I love it dude. Keep it up! :)

jzs – “And what happened when the hobbits returned to the Shire? The GREEDY CAPITALIST HOBBITS … had despoiled the land. So the Shire was scoured clean, and returned to the common folk. … And they all lived happily ever after.” [EMPHASIS MINE]

Greetings, TLOTR fan! But, to paraphrase Saruman, “your love of the socialist politic has clearly confused your mind”.

For your study at the School of DIY, read “A Tolkien Compass” edited by Jared Lobdell. In it, Robert Plank offers an excellent analysis entitled “The Scouring Of The Shire: Tolkien’s View Of Fascism”:

“The outstanding characteristic of ‘The Scouring Of The Shire’ is that … even though Saruman has been a powerful magician, he does not use magic at any point in that episode: whatever headway he makes, he makes as a politician rather than as a sorcerer.

“The Shire is almost unrecognizable … The political changes were not essentially constitutional changes. The laws have been perverted more than amended. The traditional offices have not been abolished, but new power is wielded by a new ruling group. The essential political innovation is the rise of an unprecedented police force, headed by the Chief Shirriff.”

So the despoiling of the Hobbit’s land is more from marxist Barack Hussein Obama and his commie White House, who DESTROY businesses and employment and wealth, than from small businesses & entrepreneurs, who CREATE most of the jobs and wealth in America.

      Class deez-meezed!

WeDontNeedNoSteenkinBadges03, yeah, I read the books a few times in my younger days. Not sure who you’re quoting, and there were a lot of quotes in your post, but you, or whoever you’re quoting (out of context) is confused. Tolkien abhorred industriaization, the pollution that resulted and the destruction of the England he loved. There probably was no more than that to the last chapter although anyone’s opinion is as good as mine.

But if you want to try to say that the despoiling of the Shire, the greed of the few in control, the cutting down of trees for profit and the pollution of the Shires streams was a Tolkien reference the bad effect of liberalism and environmentalism… Uh, good luck with that. I hope your teacher appreciates your creativity.

If the damn mayor chooses NOT to do his job, then I’m sure that Oakland can find somebody who will! We have the same problem with our idiot, biased mayor here in Richmond, VA! He was thrilled to charge the Tea Party for sanitation and police services during their civil gatherings in a city park. But, he has shown a total disregard for the city in deference to his memories of his days as a ‘protestor’ and has not held the Occupy Richmond crowd in the least bit responsible for their squalid gathering! It is disgusting that our mayors have disregarded their responsibilities to their taxpayers in deference to what is probably mostly outsiders putting on the appearance of poverty and need and righteous indignation at their college loans! The reason our Universities are the highest-inflation segment of our economy–we are throwing money at them in the form of student loans, while setting up our students with the delusion that a university education, somehow, qualifies them for employment–WHICH IT DOES NOT!

This person is a disgrace to law and order. If I were a real policeman (or woman), I would pack up my family and move a.s.a.p. to a State that would welcome you with open arms. The mayor should be recalled immediately, tarred, feathered and sent to hugochavez!

Sensi, you are an idiot. The Wisconsin issue was about MONEY or the lack thereof. This bogus idea that conservatives hate anyone in a union because they demanded you give up your sacred cow/collective bargaining is foolish. How broke are all these people now? Seriously? If things stayed the same and Walker never changed anything, HOW LONG WOULD IT HAVE BEEN UNTIL WISCONSIN WAS BROKE?? Then NO ONE would be getting paid. How long doofus?

Sorry, kids, but the thousands of teachers and cops and firefighters and nurses in Wisconsin, they seem to disagree with your arrogant rationalizations. And since they are the ones being directly effected by Wisconsin’s fascist governor, their opinion matters. Don’t worry, we‘ll fix that just like we’re going fix that staple-mouthed Fox fake Kasich in Ohio.

You’ve made the Tea Party a parody of itself, which is tough to do with it was parody to begin with. Tel you what, lets all send our money to Michele Bachmann. She thinks we should be able to keep 100% of our paycheck. Of course we won’t have any military or roads or police or firefighters, no airports or schools or border guards or healthcare for the poor. But hey, who needs that stuff when I can buy more cigarettes? That’s what really matters. Just ask the next Federal Reserve bureaucrat and Koch Brothers shill you meet. (That would be Herman Cain.)

      @YOUR SENSI part1

      Good news!
If you don’t like being a teacher, a cop, or a firefighter, or a nurse in Wisconsin, do what the rest of us do, quit and do something else. It is still a free country, I think. Unless you and the public employee unions think you have more say so over the money that belongs to the taxpayer than the taxpayer does? This is a possibility. The Democrats do have a history of laundering taxpayers money through non-public unions on projects that guarantee continued union funding and support for the Democrats. What a symbiotic relationship. You know it is one thing to buy some one off with your money, it is another thing to use my money to do the same and then use it against me.

Also note that when public employees spend their money in the private sector, the private sector does not dictate how their money should be spent. The private sector has to compete for it. It is called FREE enterprise. In addition lets not forget the union thugs in Wisconsin that used intimidation on private business owners for the purpose of submission. Do these type of people exemplify freedom?

      @YOUR SENSI part2

Regarding the police, firefighters, bodyguards, and military. No group respects these people more than conservatives do. Have you noticed how much the left despises them? Remove the bureaucratic waste from state and Federal government and we can easily pay them.

Regarding Michelle Bachmann, I support her because she is moral, and respects private property. Seems to go hand in hand. A free republic requires limited government. A free republic requires a people who have a spirit of self control. Any person, government, or entity that thinks they are entitled to your money more than you are must think they own you. No man owns me.

Public employees get paid by who? Oh yeah, the taxpayers. You might know them sensai if you were one of them but I’m pretty sure you are one of the bloodsucking leeches of society that receives (takes) $ from the taxpayers pocket. You think that it’s the government that gives you $ ! Well they do, but where does the gov‘t get it’s money from? That’s right, the taxpayers! We as a nation are losing the American worker who funds the government. No worker, no revenue. No revenue, no welfare checks. No worker, no money to pay police, teachers, firefighters, etc. Too many public employees and not enough taxpaying citizens = NO MONEY!!! That’s about as simple as I can explain it to you. No BS like your college prof. fed you.

I think most of the regulars here would agree with you that the bank bailouts were wrong. So why not lay the responsibility at the feed of the government where it belongs? And why are the bank bailouts bad but the GM/Chrysler/GE bailouts good?

@ Your Sensei: The federal government (primarily) under Clinton and Bush, with the best of intentions (maybe), demanded the banks lend money to people who were poor credit risks. The government reassured the banks to backstop the loans via Fannie and Freddie. Yes, there were greedy mortgage bankers, and greedy realtors, and greedy home appraisers, and greedy rating houses, and greedy home buyers who were all too eager to sign their name on a contract for a house they could not really afford. And with all that blame to go around, I still insist that at LEAST 51% of the blame goes to our federal government who created (and repeatedly defended) a system sure to fail. Banks are not evil, they serve a purpose of extending credit and other services to people in need. If we have seen (excessive) greed beyond morality guided self interest, it is because our culture’s collective morality stinks. If you think government can solve that type of systemic issue, you are just sadly naive. I hope that makes sense to you.

Hmmmmm…. In July 2010, Quan along with fellow City Council member and mayoral candidate Rebecca Kaplan were investigated by Oakland police for their actions during a protest following the manslaughter verdict of former BART Police officer Johannes Mehserle. Police claimed Quan and Kaplan joined a “human chain” which prevented officers from clearing a street, while the two countered they were acting as “peacekeepers”.

Anyone know if this is acurate or not? Not the Trial or verdict, but her actions…
