Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL), who yesterday fired up Glenn Beck when Walsh said the House Ethics Committee banned him and other congressman from join Beck’s Restoring Courage event Israel on a privately-funded trip, says the committee is now reconsidering.
On radio Friday, Walsh called in and explained that his office had spoken to staffers at the committee after yesterday’s interview. After explaining the event’s goals again and answering other concerns (such as if the event will be political), he said he resubmitted his request.
“Again it’s fairly simple,” Walsh explained. “We were approached by a great group, the International Israel Allies Caucus Foundation. They do great work around the world promoting Israel’s cause. They came to us to sponsor a fact-finding trip to Israel that coincided with the time that you‑all are there. Obviously we didn’t coordinate with you guys. Ethics Committee came back and they had some ‑‑ they had some objections to the trip. We think we’ve straightened out many of these objections. One of the objections they had was that Glenn’s events were just a little too political in nature. Now we were going over there to embark upon a number of fact‑finding meetings and stuff but, you know, what, I wasn’t going to run away from what Glenn was doing over there. I wanted to participate in it.”
The conversation and the new paperwork, Walsh said, means he could now be given approval to join Beck in Israel.

Posted on August 19, 2011 at 3:56pmClive, I think you shoudl do more reasearch about Walsh. There’s more to the story than what the media is saying. He used to live in Winnetka, with his ex wife, which if you’re familiar with the area, is a high ticket area. I think his business ended up failing, the international vacations with his girlfriend they speak of may or may not be volunteer work in other coutries, that he worked with. His child support is $20k per year, which sounds like an awful lot of money to me. Especially when his taxes show that he only made $30k to $40k. Yes, maybe he hid money, but maybe he didn’t. There is a lot missing! We just have to wait to see what comes out!

Posted on August 19, 2011 at 1:28pmPrivately funded congressional trips are allowed – IF – the house ethics committee approves the trip. There are many political aspects to this approval. One being that the congress man or woman can not have been influenced to accept a bribe or favor by the host. Bla Bla Bla — It’s still up to Boehner and Walsh to determine that factor as they are the little gods of the repubs. The dems do this all the time as long as it spreads socialism. Bottom line is…they should pay their own way or stay home. Why? Because anyone else paying for it casts a shadow of impropriety on the visit. Will future votes be called into question because this organization or private citizens paid for it? I’m sure the democrats would love the ammunition.
If it is actual neccessary government work, then WE pay for it as taxpayers…if it is for any other reason, then they should pay their own way and consider their expense well worth it.

The trip was to be privately fronted from the word ‘go’, the problem is that fact was lost in the stories’ many iterations. The Ethics committee stomped on them taking a _private_ trip on the appearance of this being a political event that was contrary to some ethics regs for Congress.
The only government money being used for this circus is the cost of the ethics inquiry as to whether or not they are allowed to go.
