Update: Reports Say Suspicious Pentagon Man May be Marine, Referenced al Qaeda

ARLINGTON, Va. (The Blaze/AP) — A man carrying a backpack containing what authorities said were suspicious materials briefly fled police Friday before he was detained in the middle of the night near the Pentagon.
The man was discovered inside Arlington National Cemetery after 1 a.m., several hours after the cemetery had closed, and was taken into custody after being uncooperative. He was in custody but has not been charged with anything. Authorities believe he acted alone and no one else was with him.
The man was identified as Yonathan Melaku, 22, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Ethiopia, according to a law enforcement official who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Investigators and bomb-sniffing dogs were sifting through his family’s home in Fairfax County, Va.
According to Fox News, Melaku is a Lance Corporal Marine reservist and also a Muslim.
The man had an unknown quantity of a substance that appeared to be ammonium nitrate in a bag, according to another law enforcement official speaking on the condition of anonymity. Ammonium nitrate is a chemical compound that is widely used in fertilizers and can be used in explosives with the correct concentration.
Nothing else was found on the man that could have triggered an explosion, the official said.
CBS News reports, however, that al Qaeda-related phrases were found scribbled in a notebook the man was carrying:
A law enforcement source told CBS News that the man detained in the discovery of a suspicious car found outside the Pentagon Friday morning was carrying a notebook that contained the phrases, “al Qaeda,“ ”Taliban rules“ and ”Mujahid defeated croatian forces.”
Despite the references to the terror organization that organized the 9/11 attacks, the group fighting U.S. forces in Afghanistan and the Arabic word for “holy warrior,” the source said the man is not thought to have been involved in a terrorist act or plot, CBS News investigative producer Pat Milton reports.
The source told Milton that the man’s backpack also contained 20 spent 9 mm shell casings and three cans of black spray paint.
The man, who is in his 20s, was detained after he was found after hours inside Arlington National Cemetery and was initially uncooperative, authorities said. Officers searched his nearby car, a red 2011 Nissan, but found nothing suspicious inside, said Brenda Heck, special agent in charge of the counterterrorism unit of the FBI’s Washington field office.
The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information. Tests were being done to determine the substance and the exact concentration, the second official said.
During the course of the investigation, officers searched the man’s nearby car, a red 2011 Nissan that was parked in the bushes near a Pentagon parking lot, but found nothing suspicious inside, said Brenda Heck, special agent in charge of the counterterrorism unit of the FBI’s Washington field office.
She would not disclose the materials inside the backpack, but said it contained no explosives.
In another incident earlier this week, a motorist found with a gun and what appeared to be a suspicious package near the Pentagon was taken into custody.
Friday’s investigation snarled rush hour traffic as police closed off roads around the Pentagon.

Thankfully the FBI is doing thier job, but it can greatly be improved, if they were allowed to fully do thier job, if the POTUS will release thier hands, istead of making them sit on them.

This product is used primarily in mining and quarrying operations. The components are generally mixed at or near the point of use for safety reasons.” It is also used to make IED’s in Afghanistan and Iraq. By itself, Ammonium Nitrate is fertilizer, but I doubt that he was a gardener. Open your eyes and minds. These people are a threat to our way of life.

Report Post »Otherwise it is fairly stable. You don’t want to heat it too much or set it on fire or drop it from an airplane, but otherwise, pretty much no problem.
When I was a child, we used ammonium nitrate and a similar substance, nitrate of soda, as a fertilizer. Sometimes, it would clump up. Sometimes it would get spilled onto oil on the garage floor. Sometimes it got contaminated with gas or oil because we kids were not exactly the epitomy of safety. We NEVER had a problem with any of this. My dad did, because he saw it as a waste of money, not because it was dangerous. My dad was not a stupid or ignorant man. I learned about the dangers of mixing these products from him. Everything he told me on this subject can be found in various books in schools and libraries around the country.
We NEVER blew anything up, and the only things we damaged with these products were old tablespoons and empty tin cans. I don’t understand the FEAR out there. I don’t understand the vitriolic hate. Come on people this probably ain’t a problem.

This product is a great ferlilizer when used properly and in small amounts. If you are really stupid, it can be dangerous. Don’t allow it to be mixed with petroleum fuels. Don’t store it in hot places or in clear containers where it can be in direct sunlight. Don’t drop it from high places. Don’t get it near open flames. But with all that, it is not any more dangerous than storing gasoline or diesel in your garage if done properly.
Report Post »When I was a child, my dad bought 50 lbs each year to put on our garden. We used it diluted in water when we transplanted tomatoes and peppers. We applied a tbls directly to corn and melons and pumpkins once they were well rooted. This is a good product as is a similar one called nitrate of soda. This product too is used in explosives and munitions. That does not make either of these products bad or evil or overly dangerous. People’s stupidity and ignorance cause 99.99% of all problems with these two products. If you are so scared that you won’t allow your neighbor to have a decent garden, YOU need to get a damn life! The laws and rules governing ammonium nitrate and nitrate of soda are: 1 Invasive, 2 ignorant, and 3 STUPID.

Jihad watch reported that 35 jihadist training camps are now in the US. Robert Spencer is warning of the same thing.

Posted on June 19, 2011 at 11:31amA.T.I. — Maybe you’re right. I can’t say for sure one way or the other. Yes ammonium nitrate is really corrosive, but it ain’t like an acid. It takes a while for it to damage most things through corrosive action. It helps if the item and the nitrate are wet.
Report Post »I have mixed ammonium nitrate as well as nitrate of soda in water and then dipped it out of the mixing pot using my bare hands without ANY ill effects. It ain’t that corrosive. We used a tin can that green peas came in to do this. Both of my brothers and both of my sisters also did this when we were little kids. (3 1/2 years old ond older) We did this every year for years in order to make a garden. No ill effects short term or long term.
CRAP, people are stupid! Or ignorant. Or both. Especially the Government. Whoooboy!
