The Transportation Security Administration will fire the baggage screener who left a note in a female passenger’s luggage about her sex toy, the agency said Friday.
A quick recap: Jill Filipovic, a New York lawyer and blogger for the website Feministe, had a sex toy in her checked bag when she flew from Newark, N.J. to Dublin over the weekend. When she unpacked her suitcase, she found a printed note that the TSA had opened and inspected her luggage. Scrawled next to the official wording was a handwritten note: “Get your freak on girl.” Filipovic posted a photo of the note on Twitter with the comment, “Just unpacked my suitcase and found this note from TSA. Guess they discovered a ‘personal item’ in my bag. Wow.”

The announcement comes after the TSA said it had initiated “disciplinary action” against the agent in question. In an update on its official blog, the agency said the worker will be removed from federal service:
*** Update 10/27/11: After working with our Office of Chief Counsel and Privacy Office, we have been cleared to say the following: TSA has completed its investigation of this matter, and has initiated action to remove the individual from federal service. Like all federal employees, this Transportation Security Officer is entitled to due process and the protections embodied in the Privacy Act. Pending the completion of the removal action, the employee will not perform any screening duties. ***
“TSA views the handwritten note to be highly inappropriate and unprofessional and apologizes for this unfortunate incident,” spokesman Kawika Riley told the Associated Press in an emailed statement Friday, confirming the TSA intends to fire worker once the individual has had the chance to appeal.
The agency has not identified the Newark Liberty International Airport employee, citing privacy laws.
Filipovic has not publicly commented about the incident beyond a blog post Wednesday after the first report that the agent had been suspended.
However, in a message on Twitter, she wrote:”Lesson learned: Don‘t tweet anything you don’t want to appear on The View. #FML” — referencing just one of the places her story was discussed.

In that strange realm known as the federal government, they discuss, deliberate and debate for a decade. After tens years of paying a man to do nothing, they send him on his way with a severance package. That of course is if he has not reached retirement age.

Report Post »B) It doesn’t matter what the TSA agent wrote on the slip in the baggage. It was not threatening, nor personally identifiable to the passenger.
C) The rights violation comes from the fact that the TSA is rummaging through an American citizen’s baggage in the first place, not from any note that was placed in there after the rights-violating search.

I think they don’t see any problem here, and they are just reacting to the scandal. I see them as an Agency created with arrogance from the beginning, encouraging the employees with some kind of bad attitude toward the people that finally ended in bulling. I think is exactly the reflect of the arrogant people that created or support the Agency, especially Obambi The Divider In Chief and his staff.

Posted on October 29, 2011 at 3:30amMaybe the people in your airport or the airports you fly out of are thugs and perverts but not everywhere or everyone. I flew through Washington DC on business and made a special effort to smile and be friendly and polite. The officers were all rude and unfriendly, but hey, it was DC!!! In Orlando Intl. I know a lot of the people there and even the less friendly officers are civil. Most are downright friendly, caring and very professional. Oh, and there are cameras everywhere and I guarantee you if anything disgusting was going on the airport authority would see to it that any person involved got fired. TSA and the airport authority don’t really like each other too much. I have friends in both. Frequent flyers know that the more liberal the area the worse the TSA officers are. Just like everything else, human beings are individuals. There are good cops and bad cops etc..

Posted on October 29, 2011 at 7:13amLook, you are right, and maybe is wrong putting all in the same bag. But, please consider this: Have you ever heard of any government agency with such public image?…have you ever noticed the arrogance with all the issues around this agency (really)?…have you ever heard so many people complaining for the same things regarding any gov’t. agency?…do you know, that when there is a crisis, a fear, a threat, any authoritarian government use that excuse to take away people’s liberties and privacy?….have you ever heard such a bulling from any other public servant?…do you know that “We are doing this to protect you” was always used against the people of a country?……Off course there is decent people in the TSA, and I believe they have extensive professional training, but this agency has all the characteristics of a government arm used against the people, using the best valid excuse, and even using good people among their own employees. As unfair as it is, I believe all TSA employees must feel the pressure from the public, so the good apples can feel the support to make the difference inside the TSA.
Report Post »Tronix
Posted on October 29, 2011 at 7:17amBut that is not all. This is a perfect example of what is coming in the near future. If something like a Martial Law happens, the good people among all the federal employees will face though decisions to make. Probably they will be instructed to follow orders that are in essence against the people, and they will have to decide if they honor their oaths, and their duties, and follow orders from an authoritarian government against their own neighbors, or decide to leave and join the rest of the people. One thing is for sure: Nobody will have an easy ride those days. Do you want an example form these days?: I bet all NYC police want to do something about OWS, but only Bloomberg and The Commissioner think different. So there you have, good people (We hope) following orders from those two that obviously don’t want to do something for the people of Manhattan and the country.

Report Post »I will give you credit for the fact that you seem to be struggling with your biases. I don’t like the direction airport security took after 9/11 either. I never thought it was necessary to create TSA. The media had the public whipped up into a panicked frenzy and everyone was blaming the contract security personnel. That lot was rude, arrogant and unprofessional! I worked at the airport then too. You forget what they were like. The regulations were a lot looser then which is why they seemed so much better. The government set the standards then too. I don’t disagree with you about the government regulations. My issue with you and others is this unfair characterization that all TSA officers are a bunch of criminal dirtbags. They for the most part hate having to use the screening techniques required by the federal government more than you do. You hate being patted down once a year when you fly on vacation? Try patting down 20 people a day while they treat you like a pervert. I don’t think I could deal with it. If they get rid of TSA tomorrow and replace them with a private company they will still have the same screening requirements. The good officers will lose there jobs and the regulatory branch will grow. I guarantee there will be more regulation with a private company because the public will take it out on the screening force and TSA will be off the hook.

In the meantime the TSA agent will just have an extended paid vacation.

Posted on October 28, 2011 at 11:37pmCome on people, are you really so stupid as to characterize all TSA officers as perverts and criminals because of this isolated incident?! We have over 1,000 officers in Orlando Intl. alone. I’m sure we have millions across the nation and we have had so few issues! There are tons of sex toys and dirty magazines in checked baggage especially during gay days at Walt Disney World. This guy was very unprofessional and now he’s gone.
Report Post »You think cops don’t joke around about the perverts they come in contact with? Stop being so bigoted against TSA.
I don’t think the government should be allowed to force, through regulation, the airlines to require screening for their passengers. Since they do, the screening will be done and done to the standards and with the techniques/equipment mandated by federal law. It doesn’t matter whether federal employees or private ones actually do the work.
I actually think screening would be more intrusive if there were a disconnect between regulatory and actual screening personnel. The regulatory could fine the contractors right and left for every violation and due to human nature the ones doing the screening would get the hatred of the public just like they do now. That way they could be even stricter and get less flack from the public.

Posted on October 29, 2011 at 12:01amHere is a scenario for you. You are invited to go to a famous persons house and decide to go. As you come to the entrance of the property you see on the open gates a placard,” Anyone passing this point will be searched.” You don’t really care about the sign. You walk on into the front yard. Security personnel are present ahead and are giving you instructions. The excitement of meeting the famous guy is waning a bit now. You see that there is no machinery, just a table and what looks like a dressing screen. The guard begins going through your bag, taking everything out and inspecting all the contents, as well as the bag itself. That’s done. Next a man that looks like a body guard informs you that you need to be frisked. At this point you kind of regret coming to the guy’s house, but feel like you have to go along with it. The guy is built like a bear and is NOT real gentle, but doesn’t rough you up or anything. He does a really thorough job. Well, you passed. The gorilla escorts you to the living room and waits with you while try to contain yourself. Half an hour goes by. Finally someone shows up and informs you the person you were waiting to meet got called away and won’t be able to see you today. He left you an autographed photo to apologize. Was any of this a violation of your constitutional rights? No. You don’t have a right to ride on a plane either. If you want you can buy your own plane. Then you won’t have to get searched to fly.

Posted on October 29, 2011 at 2:20am@ Pontiac The point is you CHOSE to allow the search. The police, government official, private citizen or illegal alien does NOT need a search warrant to search anything or anyone with the permission of the person or property owner. If a TSA agent stops you while you are walking down the street, or breaks in your door and forcibly pats you down and rummages through your bags that particular officer will have violated your constitutional rights. If you CHOOSE to enter a place that you know requires you to be searched, you are giving your permission, however grudgingly. That was the point of the story.

Posted on October 29, 2011 at 2:47amAs far as the tangents you’ve gone off on, yes you might get fined for withdrawing consent after the inspection is started, refusing a breathalyzer will result in having your driver’s license revoked. To be honest I don’t like the fact that you are no longer allowed to “change your mind” about being screened after presenting yourself for the screening process. The idea is to keep those who are trying to sneak something in from being able to back out when they think they’ll be caught. I get it, but still don’t like it.
Report Post »I hate unions! I wish there were none. The government decided to allow TSA to have a union with limits on what they can bargain on and it is very restrictive. All unions are crooked and after tax money in my opinion.
Theft is an immediate dismissal and it is reported to police. The district attorny decides whether it is worth prosecuting or not.
Nasty statements are not specifically addressed but putting anything other than an inspection notice is an immediate dismissal, if I’m not mistaken.
Government corruption exists on every level and I don’t know what stocks anyone owns. I do know Mica’s son in law owns a private security company and wants to privatize all airports. I’d call that a conflict on interest.
You don‘t know how much training TSA’s officers get so you can’t say they have less than a cop. I’d say they may have more than a cop since their jobs are more specialized. All they do is search people and or their property.

He was convicted for domestic violence and drunk driving. He served one year in jail for those charges. I was so surprised when I found out that he was hired by the government as an agent for TSA. You see…he is a chronic alcoholic and he has never had any job or work history in this country, nor did he ever hold a job at his country of origin. He was the type that lives off of the kindness of other family members, including myself. Now he is one of the people that are allowed to man handle our women folks and children at airports around the country. Maybe the government tell us that they do extensive back round checks before they hire these people but it does not mean that criminals are not being hired. Personally..I do not trust this person around children because of his alcoholism and his criminal history.

Posted on October 29, 2011 at 3:18amAlso TSA does not seize or confiscate anything they just do not allow it into the secure area. You have options as to how best to deal with your property. Most people just choose to leave it to there for disposal because they don’t want to be bothered with it. Think of it like this, You are taking your dog for a walk and see a really interesting store. You want to go in but the dog isn’t allowed. The people in the store aren’t taking your dog away. Even if they give you the option of leaving it out front for animal control to come and pick up. They are just not allowing it in the store. You can come in but the dog can’t. You want to bring your favorite antique baseball bat autographed by Babe Ruth to the plane, well, you can’t. Go take it home, put it in a bag to check it in, give it to your uncle that gave you a ride to the airport, leave the airport and go mail it to your destination, whatever, just don’t bring it past the checkpoint.

I have to say that I agree with you! The priorities shown here are way out of whack. Of course it is inappropriate for a TSA agent to leave a note like this in a woman’s suitcase, but what did this woman expect when she chose to travel with a sex toy. Surely she realized the probability that it would be seen and as far as I am concerned she opened herself up to this note. Tweeting about it to get a little attention has resulted in someone being fired; fine. Why aren’t people firing the agents that touched children and elderly individuals inappropriately? They are true victims!

Posted on October 28, 2011 at 8:46pmHighly inappropriate and unprofessional is what TSA is all about. Obama’s hired thugs, whose primary mission is to hassle the traveling American public a’la Soviet Union style. Now the totalitarian dirtbags want to stop and search our private automobiles on the freeways. They have already gotten most of the sheep used to the idea of being groped up at airports, and used to it. Now they are expanding their anti-American thuggery to our roads.
Don’t stand for this. I refuse a future living in a run-down third world toilet run by an egomaniacal African dictator like Idi Amin. Anything less is stupid, evil and unacceptable. That is why I have such a loathing for morally bankrupt progressives who think all of this is A-OK. It’s not.
