Update: Graphic Vid Captures Contentious LSU Flag Burning Protest as Planner Whisked Away to Safety

Things got out of hand quickly at this afternoon’s flag-burning protest on the campus of Louisiana State University. And while counter-protesters are claiming victory, that victory didn’t come without controversy.

As we reported earlier, communication studies graduate student Benjamin Haas had planned an event to protest the recent arrest of a student who stole a university American flag and burned it. He planned on burning his own American flag. But students, led by student government President Cody Wells, planned a counter-protest. Now, first-hand reports say that the flag-burning never happened. Instead, as pictures and video show, the protest got heated as counter protesters mobbed Haas, who then had to be whisked away in a police cruiser for his safety.

John Baham, who attended the protest, explained exactly what happened in an e-mail to The Blaze:

Ben Haas did not burn the flag. There were hundreds of students, veterans, and other patriotic Americans in free speech alley where a heated debate was taking place between a few vets, and a female student. We couldn’t hear what was being said, though. [...]

Suddenly, a student yelled, “Hey there‘s Ben Haas and he’s talking to the cameras!” Everyone ran to the parade grounds, and surrounded him while chanting many different things: “U.S.A.,“ ”Love it or leave it!,“ and ”Geaux to Hell Hippie, Geaux to Hell!” This last chant is a play on a cheer said during LSU vs. Ole Miss games.

While Ben was speaking to the news camera’s people in the crowd started to throw water bottles, water balloons, etc. at him. The mounted police officers had to  escort him away across the parade grounds, and into a police car that was waiting in the middle of a very busy road through campus. The whole time the crowd was following him chanting various things, and they even surrounded the police car until the mounted officers cleared a path.

“He was taken away for his safety,” Baham makes clear, adding that “there were some very angry military vets there, both young and old.”

At one point Baham caught a glimpse of Haas, who he says “looked very scared.”

Baham’s story was captured in pictures by the student newspaper, The Daily Reveille (Haas is in the checked shirt):

According to the paper, “hundreds” showed up to protest Haas. But an unofficial LSU message board put the unverified number in the “thousands.”

A video posted on YouTube shows exactly how the event unfolded. Students can be seeing surrounding Haas as some (as Baham notes) chanted “U-S-A!” while others shouted obscenities and threw things at him. Mounted police can be seen trying to protect him during the ordeal:

    Minor point: That Soldier in the crowd is unfortunetly going to have a bad evening as well. You can’t publically demonstrate while in uniform. He should have pulled his nametape off. (The joys of velcro.)

      Its got nothing to do with being a veteran – its part of the the Uniform Code of Military Justice. All he had to do was remove his shirt and beret. Its covered at least once a year in mandatory briefings for ALL military members regardless of branch. It’s fairly simple – If you’re in the military, you have the right as a citizen to protest but not while in uniform. The people giving him a “hard time” will be doing their duty as NCO’s and Officers reminding him of HIS duties and responsbilities. (This also covers not being in uniform at political rallies or representing a company as a military member for profit.)

      Wearing of the Uniform, DOD Instruction (DODI) 1334.01 – Paragraph 3.1.3 states that absent approval by a competent authority, members of the Armed Services (including retired members and members of Reserve components) are prohibited from wearing the uniform when “participating in activities such as unofficial public speeches, interviews, picket lines, marches, rallies or any public demonstration, which may imply Service sanction of the cause for which the demonstration or activity is conducted.” (3)

      You must have been watching a different video. I saw nothing but people who love their country and respect their flag. Most of them honored all of Haas’ rights. They just exercised theirs at the same time! Hell yeah, get in Haas’ face and let him know if he is not proud of the country he is in, their are plenty he can pack his **** up and carry with him.     WOW-I do not approve of violence, though I understand the anger. This does not make our side look good, I keep hearing “what kind of a people are we?” I wish they had found a better way to protest him. They have given him more of a platform and way too much publicity, some not so good. Please, we have got to do better than this! No one is ever “converted” by this behavior. We look like we have no valid arguement for the constitution when we don’t let the unpopular side have their say-even if we don’t like it! We have got to be better than this!

      I must have missed the part where it said there was a “side” against this guy. Was it reported that conservatives were the only ones protesting? Do liberals hate the flag as well? I’m a hardcore conservative and while “joking” I would say that yes, liberals hate America and our flag, but come on, lets not act like ONLY one side was protesting this guy.       Jenny, I don’t know that conservatives can claim these young people who stood against the flag burning. Most likely a good number of them will actually vote to keep Obama in the White House in a couple of years. I didn’t particularly enjoy the foul language but given the testosterone level I think it was amazingly civilized considering all the factors. Yeah it might have been nicer if they had just shouted USA and broke out with a rousing rendition of our national anthem but it was what it was. I agree that had this been a union protest or progressive/ socialist rally things would have been much nastier. Remember, those are the folks whose members have been known to boast of urinating on our flag. I don‘t think we’ll be sinking to that level in anyone’s lifetime!

    Holy smokes.. look at all those people… Do you suppose this is what the Muslim people felt like when that pastor wanted to burn the Koran? Seems there are loads of idiots out there that want to burn something controversial, and not expect people to rise up and be angry about it. I don’t agree with him burning the flag, of course, but undoubtedly it is his right. I am glad though, in this instance, that these people showed up.       I like some of these anti-fire ideas. It would have been interesting to let him continue with his disgusting protest just to watch him accidentally set his GF’s flag halter top on fire by mistake…then put it out with water baloons and soakers. Or, bring those huge igloos full of ice water and gatoraid to douse any burning he did…including him and his cohorts.

      Or, better yet, have the voluteer fire dept. bring out the pumper and blast the fire out with ++ pressures of water.

      I understand and applaud the passion of these “young” patriots, just as I did at first for the “youth ” cheering after BinLaden was killed. However, the youth these days, whether liberal or conservative will find any reason to march, protest & party. They lose their point when they behave like this. Just because you wear and wave the colors does not mean that they are patriotic.I would be more convinced of their love for country if they had cirlced him and sang God Bless America or the Star Spangled Banner. Yelling vulgarities is not very impressive, just shows the maturity (lack there of it.)

      This Haas fellow wants to protest the arrest of a person that STOLE a flag and burned it. Doesn’t matter what the flag was, could have been a golf course greens’ flag. He stoled it, he got arrested. Will this guy protest if I get arrested stealing money out of his wallet?

      Are you talking about Dan Choi? He was kicked out of the service for coming out and protested AFTER. He wasn’t in the military at the time of protest. He was, however, arrested during the protest.

      Yes encinoman, free speech is something to be honored and respected. Likewise there are other things that should be honored and respected:

      One’s father
      One’s mother
      One’s flag
      etc.

      Just because we have the right of free speech does not mean we should use it to disrespect other important things in our lives and country. Just because you have the right of free speech does not mean you spit in your father’s face when you are angry with him. Just because you have the right of free speech does not mean you say FU to your mother when you are angry with her. AND just because you have the right of free speech does not mean you burn the flag to protest America.

      Too many people have died for that flag for it to be disrespected.

      Reminds me of the times during the Vietnam War when Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and the black panthers were trying to shut down San Francisco State. They didn’t call us patriots in those days but we had confrontations with those two groups on the quad. The SF Police tactical squad came in to break up the small scale riots on several occasions. Now the dregs of the SDS and bp are in government leadership positions determined to shut down the US. What does that suggest?

      There are a couple of clues in his uniform, no unit crest on his Beret, No Combat Unit Patch on the right sleeve and what appears to be an ROTC patch on the left. He is a private so he probably just started ROTC this year.

      An ROTC student doesn’t fall under UCMJ. If you knew anything about the military you could have figured that out. LSU is not near any Army Base so it’s pretty evident this is an LSU student.

      In my opinion, this whole attitude of “get out if you don’t agree with me” is severely more anti American than burning a flag. Sure this guy seems like a bit of a douche, and people have every right to protest, but many of the counter protesters took it a little too far.

      About time Patriots stood up to these traitors. Whoever said it was OK to burn our flag where idiots. Like in California they can’t fly an American Flag unless they let anybody else fly a flag of their own. The American Flag should ALWAYS have preference. Maybe it‘s time we start ’burning’ flags of our enemies, especially the UN flag.

      I am normally a fiscal conservative and know we are dead broke, but I would enthusiastically back a Federal program funding one way tickets to the Iranian border for idiots like this guy along with mandatory surrender of citizenship:). Thanks to all the patriotic Americans, young and old, for taking a stand against an enemy of Freedom. Interesting to note that the main stream media once again is not pointing out there were likely thousands of pro U.S.A. demonstrators there, and all this guy or the innocent police seen was patriotic chanting! They are quick to point out the violence that occurs when an incident happens and the left has CAUSED the violence, though they conveniently leave that part out. Not so quick to point out all that happened here is Haas had the proverbial sxxt scared out of him, and rightfully so. If this kid ends up getting in trouble for taking a patriot stand, even if he loses his status as an ROTC candidate; IT WAS WORTH IT. Some owner of a corporation will find a position for this individual and it proves to the masses that one person can make a difference! Anyone remember the lone individual stopping the tank in Tiananmen Square seen around the world? He was likely dead shortly thereafter, but changed the tone around the world. We are in a fight for the very soul and Freedom of our country, perhaps the world, and everyone’s actions matter. Bravo for those who can take a stand without having to resort to violence.

      Watching this video gave me hope. Up here in the North East we never hear or see this kinda thing happen. So many liberals in the college‘s and the surrounding area’s I work in it’s discouraging. Wish I lived in the south sometimes, just seems the Patriot v. ******* ratio is better.

      Doctor’s labor is not my right…Agree with your name by the way. I also believe some of these morons need to understand that ‘Freedom is not FREE’. Yes, he absolutely has the “right” in this country to do it if it is his flag, and hundreds of thousands of our youth have died for that right over the years; but is it in good taste? A 370lb. man may have the “right” to wear a Speedo on the beach as well, but is it in good taste if there are a bunch of kids running around playing. People have forgotten with the rights of the Constitution, comes responsibilities as a citizen of this country and respect to your fellow citizens. It is much like the idiots protesting a war at a fallen soldier’s funeral. They have ZERO respect for the family and loved ones attending the funeral. They could choose a better venue for protesting than some fallen hero’s eulogy. Most of the people who are burning the flag also have ideas that are aligned with our enemies more than with America’s interest; nonetheless I would also argue they have the ‘right’ to express them. Fortunately however, we are not obligated to have to listen to them!

      I have to admit the reponces of that crowd made me uncomfortable. I don’t like mobs, even when they’re on my side. There was a lot of dangerous shouting going on there, not the best image for Americans.

      But I also thought while watching it, “There’s a lot of violent shouting going on, but no actual violence”. That’s what separates us from the savages.

      And I REALLY hate to agree with ENCINOM but I feel that soldier in the picture has not brought glory to his uniform. THAT, the picture of him screaming at a rather timid looking dweeb, is NOT the image I have of American strength and virtue. He seemed not in control of his anger. And a soldier should always keep himself in control.

      Wow, I am now a die hard LSU fan, from Texas. I used to think that Texas A&M was a patriotic school. They have shown nothing in comparison to the guts these guys at LSU showed. LSU is now ranked #1 in the patriotic Universities top 20. I would like to see a match up between these LSU patriots and the Berkley b%$@#&s. LSU America’s University.

      This is interesting, colleges are usually indoctrination camps used to change Christians over to the doctrine of Hegel – Marx & Engels. It appears as though this group of students in Louisiana are not agreeing with this Marxist and his views. It appears as though Mr Haas may have a difficult future with his stay at LSU. Where he does have the right to speak freely which he appears to be using. He does not have the constitutional right to desecrate the flag (the standard) of the USA. Its good to see our children stand up for this country, it means that there is hope for its to continue.

      These young people are the ones asked to give their lives so we can live and continue on. They have the right therefore to let this Marxists know just how they feel about his actions to burn their standard (flag) which they shed blood for. Haas was obviously incorrect in his assumption that most Americans believe in the doctrine of Hegel Marx & Engels. I suppose he had listened to far too many Marxist talk show hosts, who portray America as a Marxist nation. He had allowed himself to become sucked in by the current administration and their open adherence to Marxism. He miscalculated in his assumption of the volume of those in the USA who adhere to the doctrine of Hegel – Marx & Engels. He looks like a scared rabbit in this video, where Americans are telling him they want no more of his doctrine. Good for the students who spoke out in defense of the good ole USA

      They didn’t exactly surround them with love but it sure made me feel warm and fuzzy. I was worried about our colleges but that just made my day. I have three boys and I’m appling now to get them in LSU.
