Update: WI Mayor Gives Labor Council an Ultimatum After GOP Banned From Parade

Yesterday The Blaze reported on a county labor council president in Wisconsin who said he was banning Republican lawmakers from the city of Wausau’s Labor Day Parade, an event which the council sponsors. Now Wassau’s Mayor has shot down the ban, saying that because the city of Wausau pays for a portion of the parade’s costs including liability insurance, the event is required to be non-partisan.

In fact, Mayor Jim Tipple delivered an ultimatum to the local labor council via WSAW-TV:

The Mayor’s office released in a statement:

“The banning of a political party from participation at any event co-sponsored by the City is against public policy and not in the best interest of all the citizens of the City of Wausau. And therefore, we encourage the event organizer to invite all interested parties, or reimburse the city for other costs.”

All in all, Hot Air describes what this means in plain English:

The mayor of Wausau has responded with an ultimatum to the union board — reimburse the city for all costs or reinvite the Republicans.

[...]

I’m guessing that after blowing tens of millions of dollars on failed recall efforts, the unions won’t have a lot of cash to reimburse Wausau for its costs, and that Republicans will once again be invited to participate in the parade.

The President of the Marathon County Labor Council Randy Radtke, is upset GOP lawmakers supported the legislation signed by Republican Governor Scott Walker on issues Walker campaigned on in the 2010 gubernatorial election, where Walker won with 52% of the electorate.

According to WAOW-TV, Radtke says Labor Day is about honoring hard-working people and, in his opinion, “Republicans don’t represent those values.”

WSAW reports that department heads like Wausau‘s fire chief Gary Buchberger say they’ll still participate in the parade despite the controversy.

“We are an integral part of the community and we want to support these kinds of things we have in the past and we have every intention of trying to do so in the future,” Buchberger told WSAW.

The usually fun, family-orientated parade is set for 4:00p.m. September 5. Mayor Tipple told WSAW that he is confident the conflict will be resolved in a few days, but hopes there won’t be any protests on Labor Day.

The state police and their AG should show up with 50-100 blank arrest warrants. Anyone tries to stop anyone else from excercising their constituional right for freedom of speech or right to assembly should be handed one and arrested for sedition on the spot and hauled off in handcuffs..

This is a tempest in a teapot, we established yesterday no one was “banned,” some thin skinned purists were not specifically invited and started whining. It’s a public event. Formal invitation is not required, it is actually not legal to shun anyone.

The first one should not be blank but have the name of the Mayor written across it. New York St. Pats parade has set the precedent, freedom to assemble, includes the freedom to exclude, especially the petty tyrannts of the Wisconsin GOP.

for the safety of the Public, they should cancel the parade, and just issue licenses to hold rallys in separate corners of the town. So, also… how is this going to playout come election days? let me guess, because the Unions and the democrats hate republicans, they want to cancel the GOP primary elections or the Caucus party? If your the Unions and the Libs, then do you NOT try and force the cancellation of the general elections? if the Polling looks like Obama will lose, are you going to go door to door with baseball bats.. or worse? As formerly a steel worker working along side union ‘worker’ but myself not being in the USWU, I’ll tell you now that I work FAR HARDER than any union do-nothing. They would take long breaks and come back late with their ‘I can do anything I want, including nothing’ attitude. Unions are for lazy assed, non-working, ‘gimme your money for nothing’ blowhards.

This attempt by the unions to ban anyone is done solely to insult using the reason that ‘Labor day is for hard workers’. That level of mentality is on par with children and their tree-house clubs. No union worker ever busted their asses the way the non-union workers did in my personal experience.

Eencinom – it really amazes me how much you DON’T think for yourself or take 2 seconds to really examine what you think. Do you even read the article before you reply? Yes, people have a right to assemble, but they don’t have the right to do it with Taxpayer money if they exclude a group of people from participating. That’s all the mayor is saying. If the union wishes to have the parade and make it partisan, then they can pay for it by themselves. Seriously, I don’t know why you keep posting on here. Every time you do you show how completely ignorant you are. All you do is regurgitate liberal talking points. You compared Walker to Hilter, as a dictator I assume, but what do you call the union leader who kicks the GOP out of a public event because he didn’t like what they did? The congresspeople are ELECTED officials who did what the people ELECTED them to do and the people seem pretty ok with it considering the results of the recall elections. Seriously, do yourself a favor, turn off MSNBC, MoveOn.org, and CNN, get out of your parent’s basement and get a job. You’ll see the world a whole lot differently.

You might want to brush up on your history. I realize you leftists aren‘t much into it unless it’s of the revisionist type, but you’ll soon realize Hitler was a socialist – National Socialism. Socialism thrives in certain circles on the left – not at all on the right. You might want to stick with what the term most accurately descriptive of conservatives – capitalists.

All this means is you unlearned leftists really need to come up with an adjective that properly describes your hate for conservatives. You make yourself look like hillbillies when you tie the right in with Hitler. Is it THAT difficult to spend 20 minutes on research?

What don’t you take the time to explain to the rest of us morons how exactly the tea party is responsible for ruining the nations credit rating.

What’s odd is that the tea party had a dramatic effect in Ohio when we swept the 2010 elections and got SB5 passed. Doing this got Ohio’s credit rating changed from “negative” to “stable”.

      http://www.bizjournals.com/mobile/dayton/news/2011/07/16/sp-upgrades-ohio-rating-warns-us-debt.html

Do you think that companies that were forced to accept unionization and had to pay the works more and cover their pensions did not pass on that cost? All of your reasoning for unions is misplaced and quite honestly not true. While the large mills and mining companies did have dismal working conditions back in the day most employers were fair and compassionate to their employees.

There are reasons it peaked in the 50′s. By the 60′s employers had figured out that it pays to treat your workers well, so they don’t need a union. I got my first job away from the family farm in the early 70′s a little electrical supply plant, they were having employee problems at the time. (The gal who slept with the company president didn’t have to work!) Raised in a union family, when they began to organize I thought it’d help a lot. They won the election and dues began coming out immediately. [the only change seen for 6 months except now are negotiating committee didn't have to work either and when they came in to collect their paychecks told us they weren't allowed to talk about the negotiations.] When we joined we all made minimum wage and were told that dues would be 1 days pay. What came out of our paychecks was over a weeks pay. When I asked the Union Pres. about this he said, if you‘d been in a week before it’d been $20 cheaper, we did an assessment of our members the week before your vote and dues are the median of that. When I asked why they hadn‘t told us that at any of the meetings his reply was that we probably wouldn’t have voted them in. RIGHT ON!

Small LOUD groups are getting all the attention and the majority of people just go along with the whackos. I say the Republicans should dominate the parade. No true American, (someone that loves the Constitution), wants to see the elected officials cower to the unions. That is why you were elected! Stand tall and put the unions back where they belong

Lost all support save for the school administrators who discovered the union insurance was ripping them off by overcharging, the taxpayers who discovered their property taxes aren’t going up because their schools now have a surplus, the voters who’ve overwhelminingly re-elected all but 2 of those they tried to recall, and the everyday parents who were disgusted with the example set by the unions and teachers who destroyed public property and illegally took sick days to protest, and the moral voters who saw such a wonderful difference between the lawmakers who ran away to Chicago rather than lose a vote and the Governor who did everything he could to get them back for the vote! Yep, the Kool-Aid Party voters are definitely voting against him, that’s what their union leaders told them to do!

You make stupid lies to blame the Tea Party, the Republicans and the Constitution. Yet at the same time you seem to enjoy living in a country that allows traitors to this nation to live here in peace and spout the same sewage that they always spout on blog sites, especially conservative ones. I wouldn‘t be surprised if your parents wouldn’t have flushed the sewage down the toilet if they had known what was going to happen later on. You and your anti-American friends (if people like you actually have friends) are so two faced just by the fact that you continue to live in a place that you hate so much. I seriously doubt that you do but I wonder what church if any you go to. I wonder because what you say and do are absolutely inconsistent with any Godly principles or morals that God is. God also tells the churchs that if they have people in there that goes against Him that they MUST kick them out of the church. If the church doesn’t do that then God will remove His Presence from that church and it will cease to become a Godly church, not that it would matter to you. However, if I knew which church it was, I would know to avoid a spiritually dead church and I wouldn’t want to waste my time going there. I WOULD like to mention though that no matter how anti-Christian and anti-God and anti-American (you can protest all you want but your word claim itlaims but it wouldn’t do you are, I still have a Godly love since God directs us to love everyone.

Regarding the TEA party ruining the credit rating.
The TEA party did not force our government to spend trillions that we do not have.
The TEA party did not force the Democratic controlled Senate not to pass a budget in almost 3 years.
The TEA party did not force Pres. Obama to threaten to not pay our bills and default if he did not get his way.
The TEA party did cause Washington politicians to face up to our growing national debt, otherwise it would have been business as usual. Another trillion or two added to our debt with every debt ceiling raise. Only the House Republicans, led by the TEA party, submitted a plan to stop our deficit spending and eventually pay off our debt. Neither the President nor the Democratic controlled Senate have a plan for paying off our debt. Their plan is to keep on spending, kick the can down the road and let our grandchildren deal with the pain.

Giffords by a mentally ill person and President Obama calling for civil discussion, it is liberals like yourself that have continued and even increased the violent and radical dialogue that plagues our political environment today.

Plus, you fail to understand the point of the story. The President of the Marathon County Labor Council Randy Radtke, a “liberal”, is the person discriminating against people with a different viewpoint, not the city mayor or Gov. Walker. So if anyone displayed poor behavior, it is the liberal in this situation.

I thoughts liberals celebrated diversity and were open to all people and viewpoints. Yet, it is apparent every single day when reading the news that liberals are anything but tolerant of differing opinions.

They will be started by the local neighborhoods to rid themselves of the blight of crackhouses and places where their children are raped on their way to school. At this time, local School Districts faced with State Appointed Managers to oversee their CONTINUALLY failing Districts are organizing to protest. encinom appears to have all of the pre-written answers, supplied, I’m sure, by her local union rep. Unions, at one time, had a useful place in the structure of this country. The movement was born in necessary violence, but has never figured out that the need for same is long past. Over the last 20-30 years, membership declined, union leaders demanded more power, more money, more benefits–more of everything–for a vocal but declining group.Throw in the government workers that have been unionized and you have the breeding ground for the ugliness seen in WI & MI. I have spent most of my life around union members and their biggest failing was believing all of the pure communism preached to them, not even recognizing it for what it is until too late. Their second biggest failing was in not doing their OWN homework, allowing the leadership to TELL them how to vote. The American worker will always need a union, but not in its present structure and using its present tactics. The blatant greed and power-mongering must be curtailed by the membership and until they do, that pitifully small pool of union workers will continue to shrink.

Unions took Billions in bailouts and now own majority shares in the very companies they bankrupted and are being propped up by Obama and taxpayer money. Unions protested like spoiled little kids when asked to pay for a portion of THEIR own Healthcare and Pensions. Unions had a place and time back in the 1940′s but have outlived their usefulness and need to be disbanded for the good of the country. If you want me to explain the connection between Unions and the economic collapse, I can do that easy enough. You see it is not as complicated as you and yours would have us believe. Liberals always pull the “oh you are just stupid” gun when the talking points fail. We are not stupid, we just see you for what you are now.
The connection is simple, Unions spent billions of dollars to put Obama in office on the promise that he would “Fundamentally Change America” . That’s right, you did that. Well, once elected the Fundamental Change started and we did not like it. We conservative Americans do not want “that” fundamental change in America. Your Union leaders are in the White house daily, so we know the unions are behind the destruction of the economy hand in hand with Obama. The share holders of GM were totally ripped off and the Union ended up with their shares. What was that crap!!
So, don’t be a useful idiot for the unions, stand on your own two feet, and please stop depending on us to take care of you.

My husband worked for a company for a while that was union and he would tell me stories how if there was a spill or something, if he tried to clean it up they would yell at him because “that was their overtime.” What were they doing at the time? Sitting on their a$$es doing nothing. Unions breed lazy, greedy workers. It all becomes about what they can get out of the company and not what they can do for the company THAT GIVES THEM THE FREAKING JOB!!!!! JFK would be horrified by this. The more union workers cost the company in healthcare, salary, and overtime, the more the goods and services cost the consumers. Also, the less people the company can hire. I work hard for my money and I don’t need some damn union boss trying in increase my wage so he can take a higher percentage of it every paycheck as union dues. It’s a scam and everybody knows it. Unions don’t care about the workers. It’s all about getting higher salaries so the union can collect more and more money in dues. Don’t believe me? Then answer me this – why are unions so willing to let workers be fired without any willingness to even consider reduced pay to save those union jobs??? Get back to me when you’ve checked your liberal talking points, Encinom. I know you can’t think of an answer on your own.

“Facts are facts” eh? Try these on for size. Since 1975, there have been 8,799 reports of union violence leading to 1,963 arrests and 258 convictions. Weird how much violence and how little justice there has been eh?
      http://www.nilrr.org/node/54
Second, ok, so maybe unions gave us some benefits in the past… but… ships don‘t sail on yesterday’s wind. Just because they might have helped us in the past does not mean they cannot be harming us today.
You seem like a reasonable person who would not be one of the violent union members, but do you really know who you are following? Having been on the other side of the table from some of your union leaders (and had friends with slashed tires/broken windows), if you are really a freedom loving peaceful person, you’ll want to stop following them, they are nasty pieces of humanity. Wolves in sheep’s clothing comes to mind.

But then I’m obviously just a corporate shill, or one of the evil capitalists who sits in a smoke filled room in a pinstripe suit smoking stogies and plotting how to screw the worker. Hey, however you want to rationalize away reality.

dear idiot encinom..or whatever the hell your name is… please change that and establish your real name and take full credit for your jakass statements.. or are you a coward?…. secondly… Businesses offered Healthcare benefits to attract the best workers and retain them long term… nothing is more expensive to a business then Hiring, Firing and retraining people on a recurring basis… thirdly… weekends didnt originate because unions forced businesses to limit work to 40 hours per week.. it was religion oriented, allowing for days of rest on the sabath and sundays…. it then morphed into common practice, states even had blue laws that prevented businesses from being open on sundays Maine had those until 1989/90.. it had nothing to do with the unions… vacations and sick leave are PERKS!!! again, perks provided by Businesses to RETAIN the best workers… the unions exploited the notion after the fact/. Ps: Im a postal worker, Im in the Union, and i will tell you, if the Postal service hadnt gone Unionized, over- staffing, under staffing… paying MILLIONS IN GRIEVNECE MONEY TO PEOPLE WHO DONT PERFORM ANY WORK, and massive Overtime hours (clerks routinely get DOUBLE TIME PAY) to compensate for the Unions obscure rules and contracts… the Postal service would be a Huge Plus for the Nation, and fed Ex and UPS wouldnt even exist if it were operated like a true business.

@ Encinom & Johnny Carson – it would be SOOO refreshing if either of you would do even 2 seconds of research. While unions have pushed for better benefits, the reason companies really starting offering healthcare was not because of unions but because of the salary freeze imposed by the federal government after World War II. Since companies could not offer more money they offered other benefits such as healthcare. The unions had NOTHING to do with this. Once healthcare became part of the package, it stayed even when companies were allowed to offer better salaries again. Seriously guys, do some research. Actually read some REAL history instead of just spewing what you hear on your liberal blogs. Can’t either of you think for yourselves? There may have been a time for unions, but they are so corrupt, bullish and greedy now that they are destroying everything that has made America great and everything that will allow this country to continue. Ask the non-union business owner who got harassed and shot by the Verizon union worker. How about all the union workers who are bussed here and there to protest, harass, and trash non-union issues? Are you REALLY proud of this “civility” that we are told we are suppose to have? You keep trying to demean the tea party which has been nothing but civil and respectful while you side with bullies and increasingly violent groups. That says more about the both of you than anything you’ve ever written.

      Oh and ENCIDIOT?
When, Gov. Walker took over the state. Wisconsin taxpayers faced the fourth largest tax burden in the country, the state carried a $3 billion structural deficit and unions had a monopoly on power.
As America continues to struggle with unemployment, Wisconsin added a net of 9,500 new jobs in June — more than half the 18,000 created nationwide. Meanwhile, neighboring Illinois lost 7,200 jobs in June — and the state’s government is pursuing the well-worn liberal path of drastically higher taxes in order to combat crippling deficits. Wisconsin’s resurgence comes after three years of job losses – more than 150,000 jobs were lost in the three years before Walker became governor. Since he took office in January, the state has added 39,300 private-sector jobs. That puts Walker on pace to exceed his goal of 250,000 new jobs in four years.
Come on ENDICIOT…bleat for us again how the tea parties are a “front group for DC insiders” and how useful the unions are…LOL.

      @JohnnyCarson,
Ok, like I said, I think you seem reasonable, but now you are starting to annoy me. First, you asked for facts, so I did a quick less than five minute search and found some. Granted that particular source was probably a bad choice, but another thirty second search found plenty of other sources on industrial violence, of course, they are as unreliable as the LA Times, the NY Daily News, the Wall Street Journal, the British Government, the Australian Government, and the US Government. But my favorite is from Wharton published in 1983 showing 1,844 incidents of violence from 1975 through 1981. Oh, but they must be lying too.

But what really gets my goat is that you used my, admittedly poor, initial facts to ignore my PERSONAL EXPERIENCE completely. Amazing how selective you were in your response.

Government is supposed to prevent the use of coercion and force in the market, and while the Unions broke up the legally favored corporate evil a long time ago, now they have become more like the organized crime they ended, especially considering they are the ones legally favored (see the Enmons case). The simple fact is Unions have become the evil they sought to end, and we need to stop them from using the government in the same way they stopped corporations 100 years ago.

But like I said before, rationalize away reality however you want, it won’t change the facts.

Oh, and for anyone following the statistics going by, if the trend shown by Wharton from 1975 through 1981 continued, the number of incidence of violence since 1975 would be 9,220, which is rather close the 8,799 cited above (and very close to a number I remember when I was researching this about a year ago). Maybe the “debunked” NILRR numbers are close even if their math is like Al Gore’s, a bit little fuzzy.

Besides one of my first memories as a young child were of Teamsters members pushing down my mother and spitting on her in a grocery store parking lot. It seems they didnt like my father giving up his union job for a management position but instead of taking it out on my rather large father they attacked him wife and 5 year old son. Still hit one of the pukes in the nads though. So I thank the union ***** for not one damn thing thank you

Didn’t hear Condi Rice say of such an affront, “We don’t like it, but there’s not much we can do about it!” Didn‘t hear our allies saying that they’d just have to figure out how to make it in a world where they couldn‘t count on the US if they ’re attacked. Didn’t have to be afraid the Dept of Education would break through the front door to collect on a “past due” student loan. Didn‘t have a major musical instrument company padlocked and essentially put out of business so they couldn’t have access to the necessary paperwork to defend themselves from some pompous charge of using wood that would be the new “blood diamond” issue! Didn‘t have FEMA tell us they’d have to take the money from some other disaster to cover the flooding from a tropical storm, which wasn’t nearly as strong as they thought. I agree with you about the socialist leanings of the unions. For goodness sake we‘re talking about organizations who’ve walked hand-in-hand with nearly every organized crime syndicate in America. I have never seen a union worker produce as well as an independent contractor. An independent will work cheaper, harder, and he will take care of his own medical, and retirement. We don’t have to ban them, just level the playing field and they disappear even faster than they are now.

Your Union lies website is a front group for Richard Berman. Berman is a paid hit man for the elites that you say the Tea-Party is opposed to. When the tobacco industry needs a front group to say that smoking is A-PKAY they call on Rick Berman. The link to the website is meaningless, there are not “union facts” just lies from the elites that control the tea-party and seek to surpress the rights of Americans.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Berman

He is for Drunk Driving and against Mothers. http://www.prweek.com/news/news_worldwire.cfm?ID=235855&site=3

“Berman is against every single measure, no matter how sensible. He’d have no restrictions on tobacco advertising, junk foods galore in schools. No minimum wage,” Jacobson tells Safer. “He wants to leave corporate America unfettered of any regulations that protect the public’s health.”

Jacobson says corporate America simply hires Berman to say the nasty things they wouldn’t dare say themselves.

“He’s a hit man. He’s dishonest, deceptive, he makes things up,” Jacobson says. “He does things that the companies can’t do or say themselves, badmouthing just about anybody who says anything critical of industry.”

Can you imagine a business parade banning commie labor union workers from attending? Those Bolsheviks have such a double standard and that’s exactly what these labor unions are Bolsheviks. However, these labor unions are all for allowing illegal aliens into the US to take jobs away from fellow American workers. Why? I think it’s because these commie labor unions have a higher goal in mind over their labor rights and that is “diversity.” They want to let in illegal aliens to help water down the population in the US. If Public Union lab wants to be treated “fairly” then they should receive pay that is equal to the private sector, benefits equal to the private sector, pay into their retirement and health benefits like the private sector – essential be toe to toe equal with the private sector, but they would have their Union backing ontop of the Labor and OSHA laws that protect both private and public sector workers, now THAT is fair and THAT is what Republicans represent, fairness for ALL… Democrats only want fairness for their voting block and could care less about private sector workers.

If ALL are not invited and made welcome then I think the parade should be canceled and all costs incurred so far should come out of the pocket of the guy who doesnt want the politicians there. How stupid do you these people have to be and how dare they think that every citizen should be allowed to come. If they don’t like the political climate…when election time comes then vote … how hard is it…

Makes sense to me, if your dictating who can attend that makes it a private party, they should also have to rent the public property, pay for security, license fees and any other cost incurred by the citizens.

Of course the unions should pay if it their own private event — which is how they are now treating it.

just quit collecting dues. make the members pay directly-lets see how many members pay up on time, without some controls on how the dues are spent.
