Update: Wisconsin Docs Under Investigation for Protest ‘Sick’ Notes

The Blaze first brought you the startling video of doctors — many of whom are affiliated with the University of Wisconsin — handing out questionable absence excuse slips to protesters “sick” of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker on Sunday:

Almost immediately, many Americans watching the debate unfold in Madison questioned the ethics of medical professionals abusing their caretaker position for political reasons. Now, the University has opened its own investigation into their behavior and the Wisconsin Medical Society has openly condemned their actions.

The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health is investigating whether some of its doctors were writing fake sick notes to people missing work to attend protests at the state capitol.

“This involves a few individuals out of the nearly 1,300 physicians at UW Health,” Lisa Brunette, Director of Media Relations for the school said in a statement. “These UW Health physicians were acting on their own and without the knowledge or approval of UW Health.”

“These charges are very serious and in response the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and the University of Wisconsin Medical Foundation, two of the entities that comprise UW Health, will immediately launch an investigation of the reported behavior. The investigation will identify which UW Health physicians were involved and whether their behavior constituted violations of medical ethics or University of Wisconsin and UW Health policies and work rules,” she added.

The Wisconsin Medical Society, the state’s doctor group, said in a statement that it “does not condone these actions under any circumstances.”

One of the UW Health doctors at the capitol over the weekend, Dr. Lou Sanner, defended his actions to the Associated Press. “Some people think it’s a nod-and-wink thing, but it’s not,” he said, claiming he wrote notes for protesters suffering from stress. His excuse slips were “as valid as every other work note that I’ve written for the last 30 years,” he added.

According to Sanner, the doctors were providing a public service and were surprised to return home from the protests to find angry emails and phone calls from outraged people across the country.

“We’re not political activists. We were surprised at the nationwide organized vitriol that has come our way so quickly,” he said. “Apparently we hit a nerve. I’ve been a doctor for 30 years. I kind of missed when politics got this viral, this national.”

At least one of the doctors at the scene, Dr. James Shropshire, is actually a faculty member at the University of Wisconsin.

Many of the protesters at the state capitol were teachers staging a “sick in,” calling in sick to receive an excused absence from work. On Monday, the Madison Metropolitan School District was again forced to close its doors due to a teacher shortage. “We have received assurances that staff members will return to work on Tuesday, February 22. Therefore, all Madison School District schools will be open to students on Tuesday and will resume with their regular daily schedule,” the district’s website said.

Madison Superintendent Daniel Nerad said school officials were aware of the doctors’ note-signing station, but offered no hint as to how administration officials would manage the situation.

“We’re reviewing how we go forward in case where those types of notes are provided,” he said Sunday. “I don’t know yet what the conclusion will be.”

The Wisconsin Medical Examining Board has also received information and complaints about the events but has offered no comment on the matter.

THANK YOU for listing all the doctors names and information. I am a physician and I am OUTRAGED at this fraud!!!! Words can not express how upset I am at this. This hurts me and every doctor accross the nation. It destroys public trust and confidence. I plan to email each one and the Board of Medical Examiners. I hope this story is followed through and not dropped by the media. These doctors need to be publically reprimanded. It is the only way to restore public trust. I think these doctors would be a good place to start investigating Medicare and Medicaid fraud. And how many documents have they issued proclaiming that someone is 100% disabled, qualifying them for Social Security benefits, when they may actually be quite healthy.

Yep, if I was in charge, these doctors would be investigated fully. And any teacher turning in one of these false excuses would be fired. But then, I would have fired them for deserting their responsibility to the children they are supposed to be teaching.

If the teachers aren’t fired, I hope that parents will put together organizations refusing to allow their children to attend classes taught by these teachers who have no problem with lying and committing fraud. I would not trust my kid with a liar. What would prevent these dishonest people from lying about my child, or teaching him that lying is okay, or teaching him that fraud (the fake excuses) is acceptable? NOT ON MY WATCH.

There are two separate issues here…first is the Medical Ethics aspect which frankly is the least serious. These doctors did not meet the standard of care to issue these certificates and did not properly establish a doctor-patient relationship before doing so.

The second issue is far more serious. These useful idiots have conspired with the individuals to defraud the employer for financial gain just as soon as the employees attempt to utilize the certificates. This will most likely constitute a felony on the part of both doctor and picketer. This then is a matter for the WI Attorney General.

Do you think they were their students? If so, go after them too. Is the kind of Doctors we want practicing let alone teaching.

Kill 2 birds-if there is a claim, it’s fraud; it not, then the employee lied and needs to be fired. Secondly, HIPAA violations were all over the place. The med ctr. I wonder, are these doctors keeping adequate records of the “patients” they’re seeing on the street corner. Our family doctor is required to put ALL their records on computer in electronic format this month. The nurse is using a laptop and typing in complete medical histories, going over each with each patient, including prescription records clear back to 2004, I wonder if they were complying with their own wonderful ObamaCare Law. Also, how were these “appointments” billed, were they commiting medical fraud, by actually billing someone, and if not, “WHO IS PAYING THEM FOR THEIR SERVICES? ARE THEY DONATING TO THE OBAMA RE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN?”

Everyone keeps saying the health care act doesn’t go into effect until 2014. That is the biggest lie/deception. The entire infrastructure is being set up now….including collection of medical information. 2014 is when the system will collapse. You can blame it on whatever you want but the Dr. shortage is because the ethical ones are bailing because of ObamaCare. As far as teachers shortage, maybe B.O.’s campaign committee would consider hiring all the homeless they paid to impersonate teachers at the rally, to impersonate them in the schools to. To Killa from Wasilla,

When was the last time you talked to a private physician about the cost of malpractice insurance? Have you any idea what it costs a physician to carry malpractice insurance?

A good friend from high school went on to become an internist and not all that long ago, we were talking about the health care regulations. In the course of the conversation, I found out how much he pays yearly JUST for malpractice and quite frankly, it’s more than my spouse and I earn annually before taxes.

Why do physicians leave states? Because the cost of their practice can over run their income. Because the State they are in regulates them too much and it’s not worth it. Because rather than being grateful for the fact that someone is trying to help them get well, too many patients are suing their doctors for malpractice. You can not have it both ways.

The same is true of teachers. They are either in the classroom teaching the students, OR they are filling out forms, lesson plans, taking professional education requirements, preparing students to take mandated state tests and dealing with kids who belong in juvenile court. Finally, it gets to be too much and they leave teaching. If Wisconsin is losing teachers and doctors, the Department of Education for the State and the State Board of Physicians need to take a LONG, hard look at the reasons why.

Hey, Kila… Dont fret over a Doc shortage. The health care act has that completely covered too. You see the entire act is designed for the complete collapse of the entire health care system. Anybody with a head on their shoulders and some critical thinking skills can see that immediately from reading the act (oh, you didn’t read it? I suggest you put it by your bedside for some night time reading ….or maybe not… it might give you nightmares). You see in the brilliant plan that is laid out, Docs are no longer needed in the health care system. You have a single provider system…the government. The nurse reinvestment aspect of the health care act will ensure that you have the appropriate nursing professional taking care of you. With technology don‘t worry though because I’m sure your medical information will be sent very quickly to Central Control (oh, no, wait, that was from the movie “Brazil”…same plot…different story) and they will evaluate the information appropriately and get the appropriate pharmacological supports to you that you need. Behavioral research is REALLY REALLY big in that act too, so they’ll know how just how to get you to do the things you need to do. And regarding those nurses, don’t worry there. Your nurses are going to be just sooo happy because you see, the Health Care Act gives to nurses absolutely EVERYTHING THEY COULD EVER WANT. It really is amazing at how the HHS has managed to anticipate and fulfill absolutely EVERYTHING that a nurse could ever dream of having. ( I can say that because I am an RN and believe me… this act is loaded with all the options and accessories!) Oh, and about your medical provider, don’t worry about going about finding one that will meet your needs, that will all be taken care of because in addition to you kids having their own “medical home” in their school, you too will have your very own “medical home” to go to for all of your medical needs. And when you’re feeling stressed out…again…not to worry. That same medical home is staffed with a psych professional to provide just the pharmacological support you need.

So you see, kila..you fret too much!

      Posted on February 22, 2011 at 2:30am

Kila… I forgot to say, don’t worry about picking your medical home… they have that all worked out.. so don’t fret. And for your child, your child‘s teacher will collaborate with the school’s psycho provider at your child’s medical home at the school to be sure all of their behavioral needs are met.

And to any nurses out there…. you will be well represented by a union to ensure conformity. But don’t worry because I am sure that all union reps will really believe in what they are doing. It is actually interesting because you see, through the education act, any university or college that doesn’t get certified by the fed government will go out of business because school loans will not be approved for students to go to those schools. Hospitals or medical service organizations that don’t meet “tolerance” requirements and /or have religious restrictions on things like abortions will be shut down through disqualification for government medical reimbursement. And medical providers who have different medical ethics than the ones presented in this video above… you know… the ones who believe they can’t do abortions…or counsel homosexual folks…or don’t believe in placing through adoption children with homosexual couples …those folks… will all be weeded out through appropriate techniques.

So, Kila… you have nothing to worry about. “They” have it all worked out for you. As it almost appears that you don’t have a problem with these doctors lying… I’m sure you will have no problem when a doctor or a nurse prescribes a medical treatment or a medication for you that is really being prescribed for you based on the “common good” of society. Think that can’t happen. Think again. Lying is lying. Deception is deception. But again, I am sure the person who does that to you will really believe in what they are doing.

P.S. Again, regarding your child…don’t worry about him/her. DNA is collected on every child born in the United States. Currently states have a timeline on when that information needs to be deleted, but with the new health care act, all of your child’s information now goes to the Federal gov Dept of HHS to be collected and used for what ever purposes they want to use for. Think of the possibilities. Multi generational DNA studies can now be done and they will finally be able to weed out any and all genetic tendencies toward conservativism…. and anything else they don’t want. Eugenics at its best. A real dream come true for Utiopia. But then again… they will all be believing in what they do.

      1. I bet you a million dollars note writing Doc‘s that at least SOME of these note writing doc’s were actually as awol from work as the teachers and other government workers they were writing the sick excuses for.
      2. I wouldn‘t be surprised if at least ONE of these note writing Doc’s has or will present a sick excuse from another of the note writing Doc’s as an excuse for not being at work.
      3. The photo‘s of these note writing Doc’s and the AWOL too sick to work public employees should be collected, they should be identified and if they presented an excuse from one of these now publicly identified excuse writing Doc’s should be fired on the spot and prosecuted for FRAUD.

Cheese, I think you hit it on the head. You are pretty good at reading the actual words of a “University spokeswoman.“ ”These charges are VERY SERIOUS and in response the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine blah, blah, blan, WILL IMMEDIATELY launch an investigation of the REPORTED behavior. The investigation WILL IDENTIFY which UW Health physicians were involved and WHETHER their behavior CONSTITUTED violations of MEDICAL ETHICS OR University of Wisconsin and UW Health POLICIES and work RULES,” she added.

In plain language, if they were going to do it IMMEDIATELY, then why has it not begun. Oh yes, they WILL start an investigation.

If the charges are VERY SERIOUS, then why do they have to determine if they are violations of ethics or rules? Either the charges are VERY SERIOUS or they aren’t, and they haven’t determined WHETHER this is really serious or not, a violation of ethics or simply a violation of work rules, OR maybe no violations at all, in which case they could not be VERY SERIOUS.

Prepare to see a VERY LARGE broom come and sweep everything under a VERY SERIOUS rug. It will happen, almost IMMEDIATELY, as soon as we figure out how we can do this with out anyone knowing.

One of the things that we need to be conscious of is the fact that when there are ethical investigations and criminal investigations going on concurrently, the criminal takes prescience over the ethical. Usually, the ethical investigations can determine if there were ethics violations, but most of the ethics bodies can not levy punitive damages. The civil and criminal courts can. Also, one has to be careful in gathering the evidence, so that it doesn’t get tossed out in court. There is also something called peer review for doctors and from the article, it sounds like the State organization has already made their statement.

If I hear one more liberal whine about the poor, poor teachers, my head is going to explode. Give me a break! How many public service road crew employees does it take to patch a pothole? Answer: 12 1 to pick up the shovel and put the tar in the hole, another to spread out the tar, and 10 others to stand around and watch the two who are actually working.

everyone who supports teachers, doctors, nurses, firemen and people of the community who
strive to stand up for causes that effect others or that they believe in,
should tell them when they see them

Killa…. how I wish I had your innocence. I did, you know… last year before I read the health care act. Yes…teachers, doctors, nurses firemen and other people of the community who give of themselves to help others are to be admired. THIS IS NOT ABOUT THAT AT ALL.

This is about lying, deception, greed. It is about socialism, communism, and tyranny. It is also very much about your child. Unions are not any longer about protection of people/workers rights. You will see very shortly that it is the Union that will be the bully in the room keeping workers in line for the One World Order that will soon descend upon our country. And those unions really don’t care about those teachers… as you will see when the reach across international borders and bring down our entire country to the level of a third world country through redistribution of wealth.

With regard to your child, it is your school who will soon be determining through the schools’ “medical home” the psychological needs of your child through their mandated annual psychological evaluation of your child. If your child is “obese” by medical standards, or if there is a smoker in the house, or for any number of other reasons, your home will be visited by a social worker (funded through the social worker reinvestment act passed last year) to critically evaluate you as a parent. The nutrition program that everyone hails is really all about separating parents even more from their children as the school day and year will be increased. The “adult formation of children” clause of the health care act now gives complete and total control of your child’s psychological, emotional, mental, physical development over to the state. Don’t worry about “religious” development. They have that covered under “tolerance training”. If you are Christian, many Christian groups are now identified as “hate” oriented or intolerant and are being targeted for their religious beliefs…but not to worry. You will always (maybe) be able to have freedom of worship…even if you don’t have freedom of religion anymore. And of course then their are the others who, how did you word it…“strive to stand up for causes that effect others or that they believe in”…. like Michael Moore who have developed a web site specifically designed to enable your child to express him or herself freely ….completely, or so he says…without supervision of adults. http://www.michaelmoore.com/ But don’t worry about what they will see or experience or be invited to experience on that site, because I have no doubt that in reality there will be adults there supervising and guiding the whole thing….they’ll just be taking on new identities as “kids” through that new software program that enables one person to take on complete personas of more than ten different individuals ..complete with appropriate geological and historical backstory legitimacy. But not to worry…. I am sure that THEY ALL , HOW DID YOU WORD IT….“strive to stand up for causes that effect others or that they believe in”.

WAKE UP PARENTS…. THIS IS NOT REALLY ABOUT YOU (US) AT ALL. IT IS ALLLLL ABOUT THE KIDS! It was after reading the health care act…then the education act…. and seeing all of the other pieces fall into place from the nutrition act to the social worker reinvestment act, to the finance act to the food safety act that I realized…. IT REALLY IS ALL ABOUT THE KIDS. Look up the “adult formation of children” clauses in the health care act. Your children are not your own anymore. The pied piper is in town and he is taking them all away! Protect your children!

I have lied before to my employers and stayed home to do something I wanted to do. I had to even act like I was sick. Isn’t this being deceptive? Did someone else have to take up my slack? Since then I have changed my bad habits because I grew up and matured. I guess what I‘m trying to say is these doctors and emotionally sick people are saying it’s okay to be deceptive. If we do the math on pensions it does not work out. The money that most people put in really only lasts maybe 3 years living comfortably. After the unions invest your money unwisely then who pays for it. Tax payers and the people who want out of the unions. Where’s the common sense in this?

It takes an act of Congress to get a doctor to write a prescription without an office visit and a hefty charge for that visit, especially when stress is involved since that would probably be a controlled substance. How much did this guy charge these poor free-loading teachers who felt well enough to walk around with horrid signs, scream, hollar, sing, rave, etc. but couldn’t make it to the classroom? If the prescription was merely for their absence, the diagnosis was obviously incorrect and they should have their medical licenses suspended for awhile – perhaps they would see the error of their ways. If I were them I would be more concerned with Obamacare being repealed than free-loaders soaking the system.
