US and South Korea Push Ahead With War Games

YEONPYEONG ISLAND, South Korea (AP) — The United States and South Korea began joint war games Sunday, as South Koreans demanded vengeance over a deadly North Korean artillery bombardment that has raised fears of more clashes between the bitter rivals.

The North, meanwhile, worked to justify one of the worst attacks on South Korean territory since the 1950-53 Korean War. Four South Koreans, including two civilians, died after the North rained artillery on the small Yellow Sea island of Yeonpyeong, which is home to both fishing communities and military bases.

North Korea said civilians were used as a “human shield” around artillery positions and lashed out at what it called a “propaganda campaign” against Pyongyang.

It claimed the United States orchestrated last Tuesday’s clash so that it could stage joint naval exercises in the Yellow Sea with the South that include a U.S. nuclear powered supercarrier — enraging the North and making neighboring China uneasy.

China sent a senior official, State Councilor Dai Bingguo, to Seoul on Saturday for talks with Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported. Dai, accompanied by chief Chinese nuclear negotiator Wu Dawei, discussed Tuesday‘s attack and international talks on ending North Korea’s nuclear programs, it said.

The North Korean attack on an area with a civilian population marked a new level of hostility along the rivals’ disputed sea border. Only eight months ago, according to the findings of a South Korean-led international investigation, a North Korean torpedo sank a South Korean warship in waters farther west, killing 46 sailors.

The aggression could be linked to the North’s attempt to strengthen its government as it pursues a delicate transfer of power from leader Kim Jong Il to a young, unproven son. It also may reflect Pyongyang’s frustration that it has been unable to force a resumption of stalled international talks on receiving aid in return for nuclear disarmament.

The attack laid bare weaknesses 60 years after the Korean War in South Korea’s defenses against the North, which does not recognize the border drawn by the U.N. at the close of the conflict and which considers waters around Yeonpyeong as its territory.

The skirmish prompted President Lee Myung-bak to replace his defense minister on Friday.

At a funeral Saturday near Seoul, South Korea’s marine commander, Maj. Gen. You Nak-jun, vowed a “thousand-fold” retaliation for the attack. Dignitaries and relatives laid white flowers at an altar for the two marines killed. The mother of one of the victims fell forward in her chair in grief.

Passers-by paused at Seoul’s main train station to watch funeral footage on a big screen.

“Once the enemy attacks us, it is our duty to respond even more strongly,” said student Jeon Hyun-soo, 19. “The South Korean people want this.”

Elsewhere in Seoul, about 70 former special forces troops protested what they called the government’s weak response and scuffled with riot police in front of the Defense Ministry, pummeling the riot troops’ helmets with wooden stakes and spraying fire extinguishers.

North Korea’s state news agency said that although “it is very regrettable, if it is true, that civilian casualties occurred on Yeonpyeong island, its responsibility lies in enemies‘ inhumane action of creating a ’human shield’ by deploying civilians around artillery positions.”

The North said its enemies are “now working hard to dramatize ‘civilian casualties’ as part of its propaganda campaign.”

South Korea was conducting artillery drills Tuesday from the island, located just 7 miles (11 kilometers) from North Korea’s mainland, but fired away from the mainland.

The North said it warned South Korea to halt the drills on the morning of the attack, as part of “superhuman efforts to prevent the clash to the last moment.”

The North said that Sunday’s planned U.S.-South Korean war games showed that the United States was “the arch criminal who deliberately planned the incident and wire-pulled it behind the scene.”

The war games, which involve the USS George Washington supercarrier, display resolve by Korean War allies Washington and Seoul to respond strongly to any future North Korean aggression. However, Washington has insisted the drills are routine and were planned well before last Tuesday’s attack.

The drills kicked off Sunday morning when ships from both countries entered the exercise zone, an official with South Korea’s joint chiefs of staff said on condition of anonymity, citing office rules.

David Oten, a spokesman for the U.S. military in South Korea, said U.S. ships were still steaming toward the area and the drills would not officially begin until later in the day.

North Korea on Saturday warned of retaliatory attacks creating a “sea of fire” if its territory is violated.

The South Korean president told top officials “there is a possibility North Korea may take provocative actions during the (joint) exercise,” and urged them to coordinate with U.S. forces to counter any such move, according to a spokesman in the president’s office who spoke on condition of anonymity, citing official protocol.

Washington and Seoul have pressed China to use its influence on Pyongyang to ease tensions. China is impoverished North Korea’s biggest benefactor and its only major ally.

On Friday, the North conducted an apparent artillery drill within sight of Yeonpyeong island. The warning to Seoul and Washington came as the top U.S. commander in South Korea toured Yeonpyeong island to survey the wreckage from the rain of artillery three days earlier.

The North’s artillery barrage Tuesday destroyed civilian homes as well as military bases on Yeonpyeong Island.

Lee has ordered reinforcements for the 4,000 troops on Yeonpyeong and four other Yellow Sea islands, as well as top-level weaponry and upgraded rules of engagement.

Most of the islanders fled to the mainland after the barrage set off fierce blazes that destroyed many of their communities. It will take six months to two years for island communities to rebuild, disaster relief official Kim Sang-ryul said.

Soldiers assembled toilets Saturday for temporary shelters being built on the island by teams of relief workers.

Some South Koreans criticized the government for leaving Yeonpyeong inadequately protected.

“Military-wise, the emergency facilities should have been prepared for something like this, so I think the South Korean military must reinforce them,” said Kim Min-yang, a 27-year-old company employee. “I also think we need more dialogue with North Korea.”

I know it is off-topic, but I truly wish there had been some follow-up on that launch/contrail controversy from earlier in the month. If it was, indeed, a Chinese missile launch, with no response, the NorKs can be assured they will do whatever they want and we most certainly will capitulate.

They calculated that if that was a missile, it had to be at launched at least 35 miles out to sea. And it wasn’t toward the coast. IE. no violation of any treaty occurred. Heck, they couldn’t even agree on what it was. Makes it kinda hard to blame China even if this is what China was trying to do, which is provoked.

North Korea will not start something, if they know what is good for them. They’re proud of their goose stepping, missile parading, shows of 1960′s highly equipped arsenal. I’d say about a non stop 3 days of cruise missile, air sorties with smart bombs, and several super bunker buster surgical strikes to turn their uranium enriching centrifuges into scrap metal, followed by a ground occupation by the troops stationed (U.S. and South Korean) and some special forces and navy seals to penetrate the “Beloved Leader and 5 star General Leader Jr’s place of cowardly hiding, drag them out into the square in the sight of all the repressed people of Beloved Leader& Son and put a bullet in each of their heads right behind their left ear and make an announcement in Korean that there is going to be a huge party, compliments of the U.S.S. George Washington and staff. Then start handing out food, water, and leaflets proclaiming liberty has come to North Korea. That’s what I hope happens!

China won’t have to feed them much longer, either, with the “Shrimp dictator” eliminated. Do you honestly think China would allow a US invasion of NK? It‘s China’s back yard! All US forces would be crushed in days by the Human Wave of North Korean and Chinese slave warriors sent before the real army of China took over both Koreas. That would expand China’s industrial, geographic and military position. I say, once again, it’s time for the US to circle the wagons and protect our own country. The world is about to ignite and our troops in all these distant regions are at risk.

It is very distressing to see this as it could escalate due to misjudgments by the new inexperienced NK leader as well as the tensions already running high with the South populace calling for retribution. North Korea unilaterally renounced and ceased following the Korean War cease fire armistice May 27, 2009. This Radio Free Europe article http://www.rferl.org/Content/The_End_Of_The_Korean_War_Cease_Fire/1747745.html is a must read on aspects of this cease fire and on who fought and on which side. It is interesting that the “North” was supported by “Chinese volunteers” while the South was supported by the U.N. under which the U.S. fought. The North was basically a militant band attempting an overthrow of Korea. South Korea then refused to sign any armistice because it would recognize an illegitimate rogue group forming a government that it wanted removed and it wanted the country reunified under its command. So when they say the North has violated the armistice, it is hollow words because the North was illegitimate and the South never signed the armistice. Plus the North unilaterally renounced that armistice in 2009 over a year ago. So now we have North Korea 50 plus years later that has become a nuclear powered dictatorship and now has a defense treaty with China, who is its main supplier of food and goods. The North has maybe nearly a couple hundred thousand troops and tens of thousands of artillery and thousands of missiles pointed at the South along with a few nukes. I suspect from the news stories, that the North has the ability to reach part of the U.S. with a few missiles, although not much of the U.S. and probably not with nukes. The North is reported to have a lot of chemical and bio weapons. The South has more modern forces and probably four times the fire power, aside from not having nukes. The U.S. continues to have nukes, just not based in the South. The U.S. continues to have a DMZ trip wire of tens of thousands of troops in South Korea. South Korea represents a large trading partner for the U.S. and a democratic partner in the region. China is a key to this as it is their trading partner and defense treaty that becomes of concern to them and to the rest of us. The South is a key to U.S. – a linch pin of freedom just in front of Japan.

Our two Navies work together almost everyday. What is the big deal now? Maybe if some of our snivelling media had ever served in the military they would already know this is normal. The money is already spent for the exercise, we sure are not going to cancel it because the shovelheads in the north are banging on their war drums and blowing their bugles.

China and Russia don’t stop the NK loons and always caution us against retaliation. There’s concern that the nutjobs might sell nukes to terrorism sponsors like Syria, or terror groups themselves. The reason I fear he would just surrender our troops to the North is simple, he holds nothing but total contempt for the nation and her people. He has lied about pulling out all of our troops from Iraq – many are still there, and extended the pullout timeline from Afghanistan itself. So if his word to those soldiers fighting and dying is worthless, why should I expect anything less than him surrendering all to the enemy and doing another world apology tour for the ‘American aggression’ that took place.

@Snowleopard3200 – That’s the whole point of what I said. He hasn‘t held to his promises of being the peace candidate and so he won’t surrender our troops. He’ll send them to die without blinking.

      @Silveracer44

Apologies for the misunderstanding on my part. I have been told by my father, a Korean War survivor of the horrors done to our soldiers taken by the North in the Korean War; and to me, the effect would be the same, they get slaughtered in the end. To this day, my dad lives with the nightmares and will look at a picture of his company taken two weeks before shipping over.

Of the 122 men, only 23 survived a single night long engagement. The way he explained of his friends being butchered piece by piece are chilling indeed.

You must earn respect. All he did was get elected. Saying I have to respect the man because he is President is idiotic at best. He is a Marxist revolutionary that fooled over half the nation. Give me one reason that I should ever respect a man who would want to destroy my country!

      Give hi respect? Hell no!

      @ Super.
You have the right to speak for yourself. But not for me.
Hussein the marxist Moslem may be “Your” president.
      But he’s not mine.
There!! I just spoke for myself.
Isn’t this country great. We can {still all speak for ourselves. For how much longer is anyone’s guess.

Excuse me? Any of us can address Obama any way we wish. Secondly, he’s not our “leader”, he’s our public servant. Free men and women don’t need “leaders” in government, never have and never will.

I do agree that we do not need another military action (notice I didn’t say “war”, we haven’t been at war since 1945).

Super, until Obama finally shows proof that he is was actually born in the US and not Kenya, then America will not treat him as a president of the US. I do not think he was even born in the US. Why does he get so defiant about that question, why doesn’t he show any proof that he was born here? He should have the papers. It is funny there is more proof of him being born in Kenya than the US, which means he is Muslim and explains why he is pro muslim and anti-America, because he sure isn’t helping us out much. Obama, is an embarrassment and I am a shamed our secret service men have to protect a liar and NON-American.

Why doesn’t he show proof? It only takes what 30 seconds before they have it scanned and all over the news as proof yet he gets so defiant it is joke. We can boot him out of office now if we find out he lied to become president. His own step-mother is not even an American and he is abusing his power to help her stay in America.

I think it is time for America as a whole to stand up and demand him showing prove or him resigning/impeached immediately and thrown out of this country, and make sure they take his America hating wife with him, still haven’t forgiven her for her anti-American remarks back when Obama was campaigning.

If it smells like a rat, talks like a rat, weasels into office like a rat, most likely he is a Kenya rat.

      @SUPER *****

There are you happy I used your whole name? First respect is earned if demanded he will not get any from the American people. How is he what you call the so called President going to earn respect from anyone when he says sorry for everything the country has ever done. The President is a leader Obama is not a leader. In fact I don’t think he could lead a class of 5th graders.

As far as President Bush he didn’t back down for anything, in fact he stood up for our country and took action. He never promised to pull the troops out like Obama did. One of the reasons for his election “Change” remember. Except it’s not the change the American people were looking for the reason for his declining poll numbers.

As far as sending my son/daughter this time my son spent two tours in Iraq this last time fighting for your freedom. You do realize that freedom has a price right? That is what we have went to war over for years. Take a look at history what our military died for so you can sit here on this blog and complain because someone doesn’t call Obama President. Get real man the country has turned into a left wing complaining dump. Maybe we can save it maybe we can’t we can just pray it gets resolved quickly.
