I have the tendency to agree that naming the Seal Special Operation to kill OBL “ Geronimo ” wasn’t to well thought out by those who plan such military actions . Geronimo was one of the very last Native America holdouts to oppose the extinction of the great culture that ruled the American continent for hundreds of years.
I’m a 72 year old American of the Heinz 57 variety, with the blood of several european ethnic groups running in my veins, mixed with the Native American Kwahadi Comanche Band that roamed and ruled much of the Texas plains for centuries.
My father was forced to attend a Boarding School in Texas excluively for Native Americans and prohibited from attending schools for “whites” because of his Native American Heritage despite the fact that his father was a “ white” highly respected Texas lawman. The main goal behind this segregation was the complete eradication of all Native American or “ Indian ” cullture from the only real Americans.
Having said all this, I think Native Americans should take pride in the naming of military weapons with names such as “ Tomahawk ”for missile systems and “ Apache ” for attack helicopters. I’m not in the least offended by such a practice, to the contrary, I feel it honors the bravery and courage of our Native American people who fought so fiercely and proudly to preserve their culture and way of life.

I suggest we eliminate all references and names of Native Americans from all weapon systems, Football and Baseball teams and anything else with their names to appease the tiny minority of Progressive Political Corrective nazis. You would then see such an outpouring of outrage from the majority of American natives that the PC police would have to shut their mouths and open their minds.

When someone jumps out of an airplane and shouts “Geronimo!”, he’s asserting his bravery. Thus, the name of Geronimo became associated with achieving something important. The assignment of that name for the EVENT of capturing/killing bin Laden does not “equate” the two men. But if your political power is derived from perpetual victimhood, there can be no other explanation.

Why not acknowledge and memorialize them for such brilliant contributions as the Iroquois Confederacy? Don’t know what it is. Look it up. Its the basis for our Constitution!

Hey, this is America. All nationalities and ethnic groups are a part of this great nation. Of course, if any group objects to being honored like this we can always use another word or phrase. Let’s see “Geronimo” could be “Amerigo” for instance. I know it doesn‘t have the same kick but it rhymes and can also work to honor our continent’s namesake, who happened to be Italian..

It’s a compliment that we remember them, and use there likenesses and names. Anyone remember FSU being sued over the name “Seminoles”. The Seminoles themselves came out and said they had no problem with it, took it as the compliment it was, yet the lawsuit went forward. The purveyors of racism are the liberals, no one else.

Yes, despite the fact that they were basically Stone Age nomads (without a written language & no horses until Europeans brought them over here in the 1500s), we’re supposed to think their culture is AWESOME? It’s part of the MORE BACKWARD you are, the more we are supposed to “honor” you. Most primitive subsistence-living cultures are anything but awesome. They lived hand-to-mouth by expediency. Nature dominated them, not vice versa. They didn’t use “every part of the buffalo” because they were conservationists, they did it by NECESSITY.
U R right that they were fierce – because fighting each other & big animals required fierceness. I agree with that facet being something to wonder at & I agree it’s a tribute that one should not denigrate.
Hell, the Spartans were supported by a slave population, & a soldier usually killed one to attain his Spartan soldier status – hardly laudable, but they fought like hell & helped keep the Persians in Asia.

Remember when the Irish were treated as TRASH? This hurt my feelings too, but I got over it when I realized most of us have been treated poorly since the beginning of America. Read some true History of America and it’s people from all over the world and what they put up with. Trail of Tears may have been the saddest event against the Cherokees, but they did get the oil in Oklahoma, paid for by the many, many lives lost during that forced march. I cry thinking about it.

I also remember about 10 years ago all the brew-ha-ha over Indian names for high school football teams and how they had to scramble to change names. So Stupid! Indian names merely give credit and a sense of pride to the teams using these names. What’s so bad about that?

Lincoln missile? Ohh, I don’t know about that. You would need to clear it with the legislatures of Kentucky and Indiana AND Illinois, you know, they’d need to vote on it and all–and if I’m not mistaken the Railsplitters of America might have something to say about it too–you know those union types, they can get pretty thuggish.

That just proved you wrong, Liberal_Atheist. Unless you’re positing that the poster was advocating that we have forced sexual intercourse with the Native Americans. If anything, the poster was saying that he is in favor of withdrawing the monikers. In fact, I’ve seen only one comment out of almost six hundred that smacks of racism. And that was against blacks. While bullets might not kill him, “civilization” surely did. He got drunk on the night of 11 February on white man’s whiskey in Lawton, and on the ride back to Fort Sill, he fell off his horse. No one missed him. It was raining and very cold, and he lay unconscious in the wet and muddy road until the next morning. The old warrior, feeling betrayed and begging for freedom, died of pneumonia on 17 February 1909. He was still a prisoner of war and still longing for his mountains of Arizona. He is buried in the Apache South cemetery on the Fort Sill Military Reservation.

You know, I think the natives should be honored that we chose to name one of our most effective weapons after them. Apaches are one of the most feared instruments in the US Military, and now they want to complain about how it is inappropriate? Didn’t the Apaches make a name for themselves by being the best warriors in the Southwest Plains? To have a weapon system named after you should be the ultimate measure of respect a former enemy has towards someone, it isn‘t like you’re naming a sewage plant after them.

No self-respecting, tradition honoring Native American would willingly become a communistic socialist like this woman has. I won’t call her a “PERSON” for if I were to do so I would be “seeing” her, making her real. She is not real, she is an insult to the ancestors, and has wandered far from the red path and grandfather, she is no longer one of the People, she has gone the way of an enemy.
Pay no heed to her voice, she is a rush wind, here today gone tomorrow, an empty vessel that carries no waters.
Too many of the People have taken the wampum from the pale ones, and sit in hovels with their hands out looking for more. Where is the pride in such a life, the honor, the true ways? They are lost children, unwise and not connected to the ancestors.
Who is true? The people who care for their own, who provide for themselves, who walk upright.
We are one people, America, yet we are many ideas. There is one GOD over many gods, HE I trust, His name is True and mighty, Faithfull, everlasting Father, Adoni, Ancient of Days, Jesus, Shiloh, The Great I AM.

Who cares? This is a prime example of how playing the race card keeps racism alive. If these activists did not bring it up most people would not have even noticed, everyone else was focused on the important thing……Osama is dead!! The code name used to get it done does not change that.

Even if the code name was Beck (who I think is a modern day hero) I wouldnt think a big deal should be made about it…..Sure it would be telling…but demand an apology that would be just as dumb. I never really understood the “demand for apologies” Even if they do apologize do you really believe it to be serious?

As for all the other American Indian named things….I would be proud, those are weapons of protection that we Americans rely on. I have lived on a Navjo reservation outside of Gallup NM and I do respect the American Indians and their culture, and know that all American Indians are not activists. They are just easy to turn into tools, because of their loss…..

And I say that because I believe that capitalism and communism are really much more about how the wealth is distributed, if it trickles down or is appropriated at the beginning to those who have worked for it. But, you know, someone has to question where the wealth came from. What right does society have to the wealth? What is the relationship between that society and the land from which it got its wealth? Those are the questions that should be asked.”

Having a lot of Native American in me I can see both sides. Yes the military might look at this as honoring the Native Americans, but what about starting by truly apologizing for the massacre of thousands and the stealing of land. I am sorry but the Native American people have been discriminated and mistreated a lot more than African Americans yet they speak out and complain a lot less about their rights. Give them some due they don’t ask for much. OK you let them live where you tell them they can live after you take their land. They get to have casinos to make money, but what many don’t understand is they just want respect. History books are full of the under ground rail road, how much time did you spend in history class learning about the trail of tears?

Just my 2 cents worth I see both sides… but if we are going to honor them with our military then we should honor them in other ways. BTW the issue is Geronimo was used as a code name for Bin Laden implying in a way that Geronimo was like Bin Laden… That I don’t agree with.

For some reason they think this word is offensive….what a load of tosh!

Geronomo isn’t limited to just the primitive savage Indian beast that massacred hundreds of White settlers (women and children) on the plains…it is also what paratroopers yell when they are jumping out of a plane.

Same thing goes for the negroes that get all upset about the word “lynch”. They act like “lynching” only pertains to negroes when in fact many more Whites were lynched and hung than black males in the history of the United States.

Put simply…these people need to F’OFF!

I have known many native Americans in my life and find then to be a proud noble people. That we treated them so shamefully at our nation’s beginning is a sorrow most Americans who respect them must now bear. We took most everything from them, especially the Cherokee who lived in the Smoky Mtns…. President Andrew Jackson took their land and had them driven west to a place they neither knew nor loved….. It was a shameful dead and still remains a stain on our country.
As far as the use of these proud names for our weapons, I believe that most would be proud of the association….. That this one woman thought Geronimo was being compared to binladen is ridiculous.
Geronimo was also a proud man who fought for his nation, the Indian nation. We, as Americans, associate Geronimo with strengh and courage, that is why we name our military actions and weapons with Native American words and names….. God Bless the Native American Indian
for the most part, America is proud of you. I know I am…..

She’s no more a bona fide indian than I am. She‘s one of many female indian wannabe’s.

I’m nor sure under which mental disorder this would fall under, but these people like her are obsessed with the romanticism of being considered Native American, when they’re not really. Some are part indian, but that’s it.

There’s one in my area who has pasty white skin, blue eyes, light brown hair, and she walks around with no shoes on, always referring to what the white man “did to my people.” Obviously, she’s German or English, but she has the usual disorder to want to be part of a victim group.

I laughed at her pronouncements one day and said, “Gee, we have a real indian princess among us!” She said she was only half indian. When somebody pointed out that half indians don’t look totally caucasian she denied looking Caucasian. You could take her photo and show it to her, but it wouldn’t have any effect, because in addition to having a victim mentality she’s obviously delusional.

Why don’t these indians take on more pressing issues – like all the corruption on the reservations? If you ever want to see a perfect example of the failure of a liberal utopia, look no further than your nearest indian reservation. 99% of the employment opportunities rely on government grants and 99% of the “businesses” on reservations require OUR tax dollars to keep operating. If the indians didn’t have billions of tax dollars, they’d have nothing. 50% of the tribal government leaders on the reservation closest to me are indicted for stealing money. These people get paid $80-160K per year PLUS a $300K travel budget per person! And they’re stealing money from their own people. That’s worse than naming some missle after a TOOL! I thought it was cool, but now I realize you can see it both ways. Perhaps it would have been wiser not to use a Native American icon, to go after someone who is a jihadist icon, because depending where you stand, the relationship between the two can be viewed as +/- or -/- . In fact, many Muslims AND some libs view it as -/+ (I’d love to have the stats).

Our military only uses icons/symbols of strength and courage, so to them the relationship was definitely +/-. It should have been called Operation Hussein. BTW, this UBAMAfeat merits a statue.

Do your homework… Geronimo was the codename assign to Bin Laden. I wasnt saying that they had anything in common the military did by assigning that codename to Bin Laden. It was reported that when the codename “Geronimo” was called over the radio it meant they either killed or capture Bin Laden. Assigning that codename to the Kill or Capture of Bin Laden was no right.

To honor one race by naming the top weapons in our aresnal is not very PC, and we really should spread, (as some might say, redistribute) the wealth around. So I have proposed some new names for some our more advance weaponry currenty in use and names for the future. Please feel free to add to the list.

      1. The F-35 “Honkie”, Joint strike fighter
      2. The “Pablo” cruise missle
      3. The Colt 45 “Ghetto Blaster” tactical urban side arm
      4. Gun turret will now be known as a “Gun Turban”
      5. C-5 “Fat Bitch” cargo transport aircraft
      6. AH-1 “Rice Burner” Attack Helicopter
      7. M1 “Old Bald White Guy” tank
      8. The “ADHD” Smartbomb
      9. The “SEIU” Nerve gas, (Banned for use in warfare as a WMD, but kept for developing counter agent)
      10. The “ACORN” cluster bomb, (that actually is a good name for one).

After what Europeans did to Native Americans, and the world banking industry is still pretty much operated by the same roots. I’d say they have a valid complaint, and yet I also believe someone’s heart should drink a little more water, and let it slide. Besides, America is going to be given back to the indigenous people whom were here long before Europeans came to America. I suppose people are not aware at all that the spirit of Jacob, Joseph and Jesus has nothing to do with race.

And as for the code name “Geronimo”, code names are not necessarily chosen to send a message or make a point. Code names are chosen for their uniqueness and relative innocuous nature.

At most, “Geronimo” is a nod to the fact that Bin Laden fought against the US just as Geronimo did. Is that racist? No. It is a cold, hard fact. Facts cannot be racist.

This is stupid. Even indians know that words are used to describe things. Including warriors. Indians used them and we use them.

It is a testimony to the warrior sub group (what ever it may be) that the ferocity of their skills is used to describe a weapon or a contemporary group of warriors. Even the Romans used such tactics.

This is a frivolous lawsuit a distracting tactic and one more straw on uncle Sam’ back (read All Americans) as openly hostile groups to the U.S. government work to subvert it.

Perhaps us white Americans are only taking back what we gave in the first place. Geronimo was not his real name. His name was Goyaałé from the Chiricahua language meaning “one who yawns”; often spelled Goyathlay or Goyahkla in English. It would have been kind of awkward to use Goyaałé as the code name. He got the name Geronimo, when during a battle in which, ignoring a deadly hail of bullets, he repeatedly attacked Mexican soldiers with a knife, causing them to utter appeals to Saint Jerome (”Jeronimo!”). Americans heard this and thought his name was Geronimo, and the name stuck.
