Gun Dealers Near Mexican Border May Face New Gov’t Regulations

(AP/The Blaze) — The U.S. agency that monitors gun sales wants American weapons dealers located near the Mexican border to start reporting multiple sales of high-powered rifles, according to a notice published in the Federal Register.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has asked the White House budget office to approve an emergency request requiring border-area gun dealers to report the sales of two or more rifles to the same customer within a five-day period.

The emergency request, published Friday in the Federal Register, is likely to face stiff opposition from gun rights advocates, including the National Rifle Association.  However, ATF wants the Office of Budget Management to approve the request by Jan. 5.

NRA officials did not immediately return a telephone message for comment Monday. Last week the group’s chief lobbyist, Chris Cox, told The Washington Post that the “NRA supports legitimate efforts to stop criminal activity, but we will not stand idle while our Second Amendment is sacrificed for politics.”

High-powered rifles have become the weapon of choice for Mexico’s warring drug cartel. More than 30,000 people have been killed in Mexico’s drug war since President Felipe Calderon launched an offensive against the powerful drug gangs shortly after taking office in late 2006.

Officials on both sides of the border have said weapons bought legally in the United States are routinely smuggled into the Mexico. The proposed reporting requirement would apply to sales of two or more semi-automatic guns more powerful than .22-caliber rifles that use a detachable magazine within a five-day period.

ATF, which tracks weapons found in Mexico and has tied tens of thousands of recovered guns to U.S. dealers, has been criticized for not doing enough to curb the flow of guns to Mexico, where firearms sales are highly restricted.

Last month a Justice Department report on the agency’s Operation Gunrunner criticized the program as being narrowly focused on individual gun buyers and not larger smuggling organizations believed responsible for significant numbers of guns being shipped across the border.

Currently there are no reporting requirements for rifles.

If approved by the White House, the new reporting requirement would affect nearly 8,500 border-area gun dealers in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas and be in place for 180 days.

I’m curious. Lets say that someone buys more than one gun and the weapons dealer notifies the ATF about it. What is the ATF going to do? Go across the border and take the weapons back from the cartel? That wouldn‘t work because for one thing the mexican government wouldn’t let them cross the border because they would just label them as illegal aliens and either put them in jail or run their tails right back across the border into the USA. They seem to forget that the open border only works one way, from mexico into the the US.

Should it not be the Mexican Government that is responsible to keep this contraband from entering their country? They said they were sold legally! I think the Mexicans should secure their border! Not harass US citizens anymore. We have enough trouble with the flow north!

And, If you had as much money as the drug cartels, would you not just buy a Mexican supple officer and get the weapons from their army? I am sure they have a wonderful selection with out that silly semi-auto problem. Of course we probably gave them the weapons to begin with, to fight that war on drugs!

BATF, hmmm…aren’t they some of the same folks who were part of the worst terrorist attack in the US by the US government in Waco a few years back? I suppose we should trust their judgement now….or should we?
Sounds like more of the same to me. Absolute lies told by absolute liars. This is another less than marginally effective agency that needs to go bye bye. The key to smaller government is to get rid of these largely unconstitutional, do-little, fiefdoms that are headed by folks who are accountable to no one. Bombard your misrepresentatives with emails and phone calls.

This is nothing more than a trojan horse to get what they really want which is to have this apply to all the states. Fact is, the government knows that doing this at the border states will be meaningless since the drug dealers will simply for further into the country to buy these weapons. After 6 months to a year, our government will claim it needs to be extended to all the states.

Then it will be on to the next scam to set in motion the removal of the 2nd amendment.

The ATF (Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms…whose bringing the chips?) traced “tens of thousands of illegal guns”…the TRUTH is that it is less than 100.
MORE GUNS HAVE BEEN STOLEN BY ILLEGALS HERE IN THE US AND TAKEN BACK TO THE HELL HOLE called Mexico than were ever sold LEGALLY then smuggled.
How about the fine people of the great state of TEXAS and their gov. Rick Perry say “NUTS” to these ATF idiots, ignore their COMMON IGNORANCE…….and even BUILD THEIR OWN HUGE BORDER FENCE, equipped with .large walls, mines, gun towers and cocertina wire everywhere! This is a complicated situation. But I don’t trust the government on this issue. They will do anything to slowly but surely put the Second Amendment out of business as they have wanted to do all along. Like everything else government does, THIS WILL NOT WORK. Why don’t they spend their efforts on apprehending those who deal guns to Mexican drug cartels. Create new laws in congress to make doing so a crime of TREASON and then EXECUTE the guilty. But no, can’t do that, it would be HARSH they’d tell us. They’d much rather REGULATE and make believe they are solving the problem instead!

I did not shed one single tear for the fallen agents at the hands of Randy Weaver and David Koresh. It was the government that acted outside of the law. Eventually Bill Clinton will have to take responsibility before the judgment bar of God for those fallen agents and their actions. On judgment day Janet Reno will not be able to cop to the responsibility.

This would be the prefect reason for the left to do it too, you know we have to protect Mexico from our evil high power assault rifles, ya right this is just a smoke screen to disarm us, so you had better buy em while you still can because i feel the winds of change blowing, and its blowing our way so you had better get ready..

I passed the ACTUAL PDF file from the BATF&E on the Stu months ago, 33 firearms out of 31,311 as of April 2009, were proven to have been purchased at one time in the U.S. and there is NO proof when or where those firearms were bought, sold, or if these guns were stolen.
This is all based on a lie and in fact the BATF&E existence is unconstitutional. The Federal nor the state’s governments have the authority to regulate firearms.
Attacking “selected” gun dealers in “selected” states violated the Equal Protection clause of the U.S. Constitution.
The BATF&E has long been allowed to make LAW in the U.S., this needs to be stopped IMMEDIATELY!

Create a problem “leave the borders open” and create a solution “gun control” just a foot in the door!

The real facts are guns came from the American government that trained and armed the Mexican military/police that ran amuck and joined the cartels, the other tens of thousands weapons found RPG’s, AK-47′s & grenades “NOT AMERICAN” but from overseas shipped in thru the Gulf of Mexico!

Why not throw in some of those damn arial drones we overpayed for and get them in the mix aswell…find them, if they fire on our guys…they die…that simple; f-all the politics

I cant believe the pipe dream most of these libs have that “the world would be a better place without guns”…they actually think they can elliminate firearms from america…all they can do is take them out of the hands of actual law abiding citizens, thus giving the thugs and murderous criminals more power over the weak because only the law breakers will have guns in the end…oh and the Gestappo.

There is a lot of people blaming so called “American” weapons for the border violence but I think it is all a lie to try to pass more regulation and take away American arms or make it harder for us to protect ourselves, and if there is a place where Americans need protection it is the border. A little fact that most people don’t know is that the majority of weapons in Mexico are actually shipped in from China. As China continues to expand it‘s trade with Mexico it is also expanding it’s smuggling of weapons to Mexico to fuel the Drug gangs which brings more unrest to America and also smuggling illegal immigrants from China across the Mexican border which has increased 1000% year on year. There are multiple attacks and plans in place to continue to overwhelm our system and bleed us dry financially and make us rise to unmanageable levels of manpower to keep law and order!

The ATF and the Gov’t are lying just like they did before. Remember 2 years ago they started this same bogus claim. Then it was investigated by media and they found that less than 5% of the guns were actually purchased in the US. Many were stolen and even more were actually supplied by our own Gov’t(full auto M-4′s). That refuse to release the serial numbers because that is how their lie was debunked before. As to the AK’s they are mainly Chinese made. I am sure you can walk into any gun store in TX and buy grenades, RPG’s and antipersonnel weapons, NOT! They impose this new restriction on TX and in 6 months they say it is not working so they expand it to the whole US. One little step at a time. That is how they will destroy the 2nd amendment rights that keeps America free. If you do not think the right to keep and bear arms is the only thing stopping the radicals from doing an armed take over you really are stupid. The new head of the ATF is the most antigun rights person Obama could find to put in the job. He was a big backer in the Chicago and DC no gun laws. He worked with the Brady gun elemination group.
