WASHINGTON (AP) — The State Department is putting U.S. embassies on alert and is warning Americans abroad of possible reprisal attacks from al-Qaida and its affiliates around the world after the killing of the group’s leader Osama bin Laden by American forces in Pakistan.
In a worldwide travel alert released shortly after President Barack Obama late Sunday announced bin Laden’s death in a military operation, the department said there was an “enhanced potential for anti-American violence given recent counterterrorism activity in Pakistan.” It said Americans living or traveling abroad, particularly in areas that have been hit by anti-American violence in the past should limit travel outside their homes and avoid large gatherings.
The alert said U.S. embassy operations would continue “to the extent possible under the constraints of any evolving security situation.”

Your “right of center” self should understand the basic premise of the constitution and the 1st amendment- The government shall not restrict your rights- a private enterprise with which you choose to participate can make any rules they deem necessary. This site is a little too restrictive in their usage terms, but they have a right to moderate to the extent they deem necessary. IMO this site has some very generic moderation and much of it seems automated, but I actually prefer sites/blogs that are better moderated and more closely watched than this one.
This site is pretty liberal in what is allowed to be posted. If you think it’s too much moderation, you are free to go somewhere else. Constitution protects you against government; in any voluntary private party transactions or communications, all citizens and citizen groups are allowed to define their own terms.

You are correct and I am aware that The Blaze is far better than, for example, HuffintonPost. However, being better than those clowns is small recommendation.
The reason why the USA is pre-eminent among nations is because of your Constitution. The reason why you are free and a beacon to the world is because of your first amendment. I would like to think that this website, sponsored by GB (a staunch constitutionist) might bear this in mind.
As well, if The Blaze extinguishes all opinion, besides what is approved, then the site will become a stagnant pool of like thought. We all need to test our philosphies and ideas in the public arena. We need to place our opinions under the scrutiny of others that we don’t know, and who can be relied apon to be honest (if blunt) in their comments. Not only that, but people from all sides can provide valuable insight that may not have occurred to us.
Now I agree that The Blaze is nowhere near the wasteland that is Huffington Post, but that is where ideological censorship ultimately leads (I think that pulling obscene language is correct). Are we so delicate that our gentle eyes need to be protected from contrary opinion? Are non-obscene insults too much for our delicate psyches? Are we incapable of distinguishing bulldust for ourselves?
So why do it?

I’ve never noticed this site blocking different opinions, however, I have seen them delete posts with vulgarities or inflammatory content. I don‘t post here often because I’m not particularly fond of the structure or the lag so I can’t say with certainty that all views are given equal chance, however, I have noticed that the approach here is to block words rather than ideas, and it’s a fair but uninvolved method to distinguish between acceptable and unacceptable.
For example, I can‘t post that I think you’re a shithead (it will get censored as it should since it’s a direct insult- which I am not trying to use to insult, I’m just posting it as an example). However, I can post ‘someone should put a boot in your behind’ (even but(t) is blocked which should further reinforce the previous point) and other hateful stuff.
This tells me that words are blocked, and ideas are only blocked when they are reported and decided to be vulgar or abusive. I’ve seen a lot of stuff on this site that I would never allow to be representative of my point of view based on the poor taste of the post or vitriolic content- I do find it hard to believe that ideas are being blocked given what I’ve seen posted on this site.
Ideas are very wide-ranging here, from anarchism to crazy liberals spamming the stories. I doubt the claim that ideas are being blocked just because they disagree- there must be something in poor taste or intentionally inflammatory or ‘trollish’ in the posts that you claim are being blocked…..of course, I could be wrong.

Well so much for words being blocked— In my response post 1 got through the auto-censor, but I think you’ll notice in many threads that there are many words that are ********* blocked. There’s an auto-moderation function on this site, I just don’t know what triggers it. Anything else has to be complained about, or viewed by the small moderation staff (if they have one).
Report Post »nzkiwi
Posted on May 2, 2011 at 6:22am@Ozzie
Yes, I’m surprised myself that certain of your words got through. I have fallen afoul of the auto-censor once in the past and rightly so (but I’d rather not go into it). I think the language might have to be a bit stronger – but let’s not test it. Or maybe the moderator is letting you say things to me that he would like to – but just this once :)
I’m not complaining about the censoring of foul language, but the editing out of calijohn’s comments – which he put back in as a repost. I don’t agree with his position, but I can’t see why he was censored. Can you?
From time to time others have complained that their posts have been edited or deleted. Once a whole conversation (actually arguement) was deleted, much to the disappointment to those of us who had to go to bed and rejoined the next day to see what happened.
You doubtlessly think that I am over-reacting, but if we “go quietly into that good night” we will have no-one to blame for the result but ourselves – or yourself, because I’m not going quietly. You statements regarding the constitution and its limits are perfectly correct, but I like this site because it is a scrappy, rugged place in the intellectual sense and I resent any modifcation of it. Let’s face it, both our governments are trying to control the internet, citing our general safety as the reason. How does this start? And when do we try to stop it?
As a private organisation The Blaze should be sensitive to its customers. The question is: who is in the minority – you or me?
