USA Today/Gallup Poll of Swing States Shows Virtual Tie between Romney and Obama, Other GOP Candidates Trail by 7+ Points

Swing States Poll Has Romney Tied with Obama, Leading President by Statistically Insignificant Percentage Point

Following Newt Gingrich’s dominent win in the South Carolina GOP primary on January 21, an intriguing statistic was found in exit polls that revealed that the former Speaker beat rival Mitt Romney on the two arguments central to his campaign–that he knows best how to handle the economy and stands the best chance of beating President Barack Obama. In South Carolina, 45% of Republican voters said that beating President Obama was their highest priority, according to exit poll data released by CNN. Half of them voted for Gingrich, while fewer than four in 10 voted for Romney.

As the campaign has shifted to Florida and momentum has seemed to sway back in Romney’s favor, a new USA Today/Gallup poll released Sunday may allow his campaign to breathe a short sigh of relief, for they still outpace rivals–and potentially the President–on “the electability debate.” USA Today reports on Mitt Romney’s lead over opponents in what will be the key swing states in the 2012 general election:

“Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney essentially ties Barack Obama in the nation’s top dozen battlegrounds, a USA TODAY/Gallup Swing States survey finds, while rival Newt Gingrich now trails the president by a decisive 14 percentage points.

That reflects a significant decline by the former House speaker since early December, when he led Obama by three points”

USA Today notes that Romney leads Obama by a statistically insignificant percentage point, 48%-47%. The poll has a margin of error +/- 5 percentage points.

After Romney, Texas Rep. Ron Paul and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum trail the President in swing states by only seven points, Paul 43%-50% and Santorum 44%-51%. As of now, former Speaker Newt Gingrich trails President Obama 40%-54%.

The poll was conducted by registered voters in Colorado, Florida,  Iowa, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Nevada, New Hampshire, Mew Mexico, North Carolina, Virginia and Wisconsin.

A NBC News/Marist poll released earlier Sunday revealed that Romney currently holds a 15-point lead over Gingrich in Florida before the state’s primary Tuesday. The NBC News/Marist poll did not take into account Gingrich‘s potential boost from Herman Cain’s endorsement Saturday night.

Gingrich on Sunday acknowledged his slide in the polls, and blamed Mitt Romney for “carpet-bombing“ him with ”Wall Street money” attack ads, Politico reported.

“If you’ll notice, when you get outside the zone where Romney carpet-bombs with Wall Street money, and you look at what’s happening in the rest of the country, I’m ahead in all three national polls that were released this week,” Gingrich said on ABC’s “This Week.“ ”It’s only when he can mass money to focus on carpet-bombing with negative ads that he gains any traction at all.”

Data collected from Real Clear Politics shows that Gingrich does still lead in national polls, but his spread has decreased since early last week.

    Well are these polls any better than the South Carolina polls? Have the sheep really been lead to slaughter is the question. I sure hope Floridians are smarter than what these polls show. I can’t see Florida going for a liberal such as Romney. We will see Tuesday if they are! This poll about Romney being tied with Obama is BS, Romney, if nominated will not beat Obama. Romney could not beat McCain in 08 and NcCain went on to be slaughtered by Obama in the general. If Floridians are betting on Romney, they don’t need to go to the horse races!

      Reagan lost to Ford in the primaries. Ford took a beating from Carter. Reagan came back and did just fine against Carter four years later.

    I’ve been saying that I would vote for the GOP nominee no matter who it is. But after last weeks GOP/Romney/Conservative Blogger attack on Newt Gingrich I’ve changed my mind.
    If I‘m not allowed to vote for a conservative I’ll either write-in or not vote at all.
    I know a lot of you will vote for Romney out of a sense of damage control but what good is it going to do really?
    To hell with the GOP. It no longer stands for what I believe in so it no longer gets my vote. I just wish I had come to my senses years ago.
    It‘s time for the Tea Party to do what it knows is best for the country and that’s not kowtowing to a bunch of lying weak spine moderates.

      I have said this too…I am a lifelong GOP, conservative.. then my party just took off and left me? I found safety in Libertarianism….extreme conservative fiscal policy, states rights, personal liberty, constitutionality, and non-interventionism….I cannot ever give up my GOP voter card in this state as the law says only a dem/Republican can vote in primaries….sad…we are given false choice and the part’s ONLY care about their POWER…not yours….a third party ticket would be nice, but would destroy the conservative side…not the dems….so what to do….as I stated on another post.. ” If we choose not to decide……we still have made a choice”. ( RUSH intellectual property…not stolen, sold, or implied as original…)that in case the feds are watching!!! lol

      I’ve read the Constitution. I know what it say and I know why it says it. I know Ron Paul is the one who articulates it best. I know he is best of all the candidates.

      I know the others seem lost in comparison to the clarity and understanding of the good doctor.

      I will have a clear conscience after election day regardless of who wins.

    A vote for Romney is a vote against the Tea Party – but go ahead embrace big government Republican elitism. I am not a Republican or a Democrat so I do not buy into this Romney is better than Obama – both will be a disaster and a Romney victory and his return to his liberal ways with his version of Obamacare will ensure a Democrat Congress in 2014 and an ultra Progrressive President in 2016.       Allen West voted for NDAA. So he did understand what the tea party wanted.

    i dont believe these poles. i work in 3 states every day and hardly ever with the same customer. when politics ever comes up people dont like the prompter. the poles are worded in ways to favor the left. questions like- do you want dirty water? if you say no, then chalk one up for the left because everyone knows conservatives do.

    We need the primary season go on and on allowing the candidates to visit many states learn the people, build the grassroots organization and see what the people in each state are concerned about and respond to.     Independents will not vote for Gingrich. They have the liberal view of Gingrich — a corrupt former Repub Congressman. Romney’s advantage is that he is a Washington outsider, which is why independents are attracted to him. If the WH Occupier holds free and fair elections — don’t hold your breath, folks — then Romney IS the best man to defeat Obama.

    Neo-libs and Obamanots support RP. They are obviously not to be trusted. Besides, we conservatives have overwhelmingly given him the pink slip. He should resign and go home.

    Santorum is too far right for most independents. Sadly, he won’t do either. Those of us who want ABO in 2012 because it’s now or never, SHOULD consider Romney.     Polls don’t indicate the pulse of this country. Romney can’t get much more than 25% of the vote in any state. Paul is the best candidate but the Right will come together and win the election by 1% fine.

    It’s going to happen like this, I think. The Tea Party Conservatives take a filibuster proof majority in the senate and control the house. The dictator losess in a veritable landslide despite the criminality of his operatives within the regime.

      “The President is to be the ‘commander-in-chief of the army and navy of the United States, and of the militia of the several States, when called into the actual service of the United States…’ In most of these particulars, the power of the President will resemble equally that of the king of Great Britain and of the governor of New York. The most material points of difference are these:

      First. The President will have only the occasional command of such part of the militia of the nation as by legislative provision may be called into the actual service of the Union. The king of Great Britain and the governor of New York have at all times the entire command of all the militia within their several jurisdictions. In this article, therefore, the power of the President would be inferior to that of either the monarch or the governor.

      Secondly. The President is to be commander-in-chief of the army and navy of the United States. In this respect his authority would be nominally the same with that of the king of Great Britain, but in substance much inferior to it. It would amount to nothing more than the supreme command and direction of the military and naval forces, as first General and admiral of the Confederacy; while that of the British king extends to the DECLARING of war and to the RAISING and REGULATING of fleets and armies, all which, by the Constitution under consideration, would appertain to the legislature…”

      THEREALCONSERVATIVE Ron Paul has voted for our Constitutional rights 100% of the time..He wants the Federal Reserve audited and in part because of his efforts the FR has been..It was found that they were loaned 16 trillion..an open check. http://www.unelected.org/audit-of-the-federal-reserve-reveals-16-trillion-in-secret-bailouts.. Ron Paul has voted continually to lower taxes.. He has spoken out against the Patriot Act and Indefinite Detention..and just proposed a bill to repeal it. Ron Paul has and still is standing for our Constitutional Rights..None of the others are..and no one else has a plan to get us out of debt.

      As I said above don’t give me weblinks. Show me in the Constitution itself word for word where Paul has defended mine or anyone elses Constitutional rights. Also Show me in the Constitution itself word for word where Paul as President would have the authority to end the FED or anyother department without Congress (which they won’t support). Is Paul going to do a Obama and go around Congress, real Constitutional. So, in reality Paul won’t do anything as President but cower to our enemies and we alreasdy have a loser to do that.

      Amendment1 Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Ron Paul has spoken out against PIPA and SOPA..Loss of freedom of speech
      2.Amendment II: A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. Ron Paul has voted for our right to bear arms..Romney Gingrich and Santorum have voted for infringement of said amendment

      and the persons or things to be seized. Ron Paul is for our personal rights and wants to end 5 bureaurocracies one being Homeland Securtiy responsible for helping Holder pass guns to Hezbollah Drug Cartels. and TSA for patting down babies and little ole ladies..

      Amendment VI: In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence.Indefintite Detention again violates this Constitutional right for which Ron Paul has been our advocate
      Amendment VIII: Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted Indefintie Detention allows the gov. to seize us without charges and hold us indefinitely and torture us ..So it violates this right for which Paul stands.
      Amendment IX: The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.
      Amendment X: The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people. Paul wants to allow the states to govern themselves

      @REALCONSERVATIVE..As for the Federal Reserve..Paul wanted them audited..and according to that link I provided..he was in part responsible for it happening. That’s how we know that they have an open check for 16 trillion.
