During last night’s NBA draft, Bernard James was selected 34th overall. So why should you care? Because Bernard James isn’t just another teenage college basketball player. Bernard James is a 27-year-old, six-year Air Force vet who served tours in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Qatar. And when he was drafted, the crowd did it exactly what it should have done: It started chanting “USA!” and gave him a standing ovation.
Here’s how it looked and sounded:
And how appropriate that he’ll be playing for Dallas (the Cavaliers were picking for the Mavericks).

Posted on June 29, 2012 at 11:46amI’m a Florida State Alumni, and follow all of our sports teams closely. Bernard is a great story, and I’m glad to see him get an opportunity in the NBA. Great individual, and proud to know that he served his country in the Air Force. Congrats Bernard!

Posted on June 29, 2012 at 12:39pmI’ll admit, the Gators had their time over us for about 6 years. The momentum has swung our way, at least for the next few years.

Posted on June 29, 2012 at 3:54pmI‘m gonna go ahead and bring a big ol’ ‘Go Noles!‘ I’m an alum too. It was great to see James get drafted last night…especially after not playing any high school ball. I hope he does well.

Posted on June 29, 2012 at 11:40amEven more awesome than the chanting is the story behind Bernard James…he didn’t even finish high school. He dropped out but eventually got his GED before joining the military..

Posted on June 29, 2012 at 11:14amWonderful story. No politics, no race, no phoney social justice, just service and the American dream. Wish him success and maybe a title for the Cavs if he stays there.

Posted on June 29, 2012 at 10:54amChanting “USA, USA’ has now become a story to report to the public. How sad that we have let political correctness put this country on the road to he11.
USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA…!

Posted on June 29, 2012 at 11:12amOnly a story to report for those who seek to imply they have a higher sense of nationalism than the average American. Not dissimilar to evangelicals who believe, pun intended, that they are somehow better Christians than others. Individuals who think they achieve some special status by highlighting such situations or reinforcing the implied difference. By in large their perceived higher status is just that, perceived. What is sad is people like this who feel a need to pump themselves up through association.

Posted on June 29, 2012 at 11:24amCavallo,
I hear ya, but don’t give up. This is still our country. News reports like this, which only a few years ago would have been unheard of, is all the more reason to stay the fight.
Rook,

Posted on June 29, 2012 at 12:03pm@Banter That’s ok Banter. I just live it everyday and continue to invest in my community and my country. As I referenced there are those who speak about their love for this country, display it in showy displays and then out source jobs, cheat on their taxes and cut spending for investments in our children. Kinda like the individuals who enlist in the military during peace time for the perks such as tuition payments, etc. Or even better those who have lawyers shift their assets to their children, so that the state pays for their nursing home through Medicaid. Don’t tell me what you believe, don’t tell me what you think. Show me. That‘s how I was raised and that’s what I do. No need to profess that you love American more than someone else. Cause that isn’t worth much of anything other than perhaps making you feel better.

Posted on June 29, 2012 at 10:39amWhy is it appropriate that he will be playing for a gutted team that has Dirk, salary-cap issues and nothing else at this point? They better pray Deron wants to come home, if not, they are doomed.
