USDA Buys 7 Million Pounds of ‘Pink Slime’ For School Lunches

School lunch programs have been in the spotlight recently. Just last week, the Blaze posted two stories about a North Carolina school where the food police were aggressively monitoring lunches that parents give to their children. Earlier this year, First Lady Michelle Obama lead a very public campaign to announce that healthier foods would be coming to school cafeterias and military mess halls.
Today, many parents will be questioning the wisdom of a government-controlled school lunch program. Why? Because the Feds have announced that the USDA is buying seven million pounds of something that is affectionately known as “pink slime.”

The seven million pounds of this frankenmeat product purchased by the USDA is not a new addition to the lunch programs in schools, just a substantial increase. The New York Times reported that in 2009 the U.S. government purchased 5.5 million pounds of the stuff.
Pink slime is a mixture of leftover trimmings, sinew, and other beef parts culled from a cow once the expensive and more recognizable cuts of meat have been harvested and sent to a butcher. The collection of leftovers is spun in a centrifuge to remove excess fat, washed in a disinfecting solution and then minced for use in various applications.
Pink slime is allowed to make up as much as 15% of the ground beef you might be purchasing at from your local grocery store. And according to some industry experts, the concoction may be in as much as 70% of the ground beef found in America. Gerald Zirnstein, the scientist who first coined the phrase “pink slime” when he worked at the USDA, told ABC news that calling any package that contains it “fresh ground beef” constitutes ” economic fraud:”
Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver is not a fan of this stuff. He recently waged a very public campaign against pink slime and managed to convince McDonald’s to stop using it in their hamburgers.
Perhaps the decision from Mickey D‘s was inspired by this segment on Oliver’s TV show:
Joining McDonald’s in pledging to stop using pink slime is Burger King and Taco Bell.
The cost savings realized by adding the ammonia treated mixture of trimmings to real ground beef amounts to about 3 cents a pound. And there have been reports from schools and prisons where these burgers are served claiming that the meat smells and tastes of ammonia. And yet the USDA is increasing the amount of pink slime purchased for the national school lunch programs.
If the cost savings are minimal and the fast food industry is removing pink slime from its considerable food distribution network, will the government respond in kind?

Posted on March 9, 2012 at 9:14amI’m fortunate enough to live in a “rural” area where I can purchase beef that was raised and butchered all withing about 10 miles of my house. If you buy a 1/4, 1/2 or whole bee) you get everything steaks, roasts etc. For less per pound than you would by this pink slime burger at the local super market.
I would encourage everyone to seek out and support local meat lockers, processors and small farmers and ranchers if you are still lucky enough to have them.
This story just goes to show you cannot trust the big producers to provide healthy and wholesome food.

Pink slime has been used for years without problem. Ammonia contains nitrogen just like protein does so its just another form of protein. Did you know that ammonia is a antiseptic just like alcohol. I guess that explains why hospitals use ammonia instead of alcohol on your arm before giving injections; ahh, but they don’t.

And who do you think can afford to buy and own them. Big corporations and the wealthy. Our entire food industry is a fraud and much, if not most of what is used in process and prepared foods is pink slim or worse. Eat grass fed beef, pastured chicken, turkey, eggs and milk products, raw milk cheese and organic vegetables, fruit and bread. Eat 30% less of high quality foods and your food bill will be the same and you will feel a lot better. It’s that simple. Save the calories for a good beer or wine.

Many years ago, when a teen, my parents would drive 70 miles to get our beef direct from the farm. Now I go to one of my friends and get it from them. We raise our own free range chickens for meat and eggs and she wants to add goats this summer meanwhile I’m thinking rabbits (great meat bad cute factor). Of course we have to supplement with venison (poor me).
I KNOW what is in my food.
When I worked in the city I took a bus to work. You would be surprised at the number of people that think meat comes from a grocery store shelf. They can’t connect the cute little animal with a steak or rabbit stew, etc. When you get on the subject of manure they will actually turn green…
Taco Bell and Burger Thing are going to get calls about their use of this. No more business from me until I know it is removed or what they put it in!

Soylent is a combination of soybeans and lentils, which they ate because nobody could afford meat anymore. I now feel so stupid. Machell Obama I guess in her decision to tell us what we can and can not eat in the schools did not seem to have a problem with the FDA. She is in a position to have talked to them and get some answers about the food.
But this is not new. In the 80s the FDA tried to add Radiation to the food.
They stated that the food would not be radio active. This is true. But guess what. When you radiate food you change it. Gama Radiation is Ionizing radiation. That means it RIPs Electrons from Molocules. When you do this the Molocule is now something new. Not what it was. Thus a Mango
is no longer a mango. Beef is no longer beef. It is something else and we do not know what it is.
I do not know what chemical reactions Amonia has on meat. But breath a little of it and see what happens. Again it changes the makeup chemicly of what you are eating. Not much differance than Food iradiation. I do not care if no amonia stays on what is left. It made the chences already. That is why the bacteria are dead. They were chemicly altered. No longer able to sustain life.

But the reason it kills them is the exact reason this stuff is not safe as food. No dam way. It has been chemically altered. What is it after it was soaked in ammonia? No one knows and if they say they do they are 1. Stupid or 2. Liars. We do not know all of the chemicals and compounds in the remains that are to become Pink Slime. It SOUNDS GROSS because of the sensational monicker, “pink slime.”

This is NOT to say I approve of schools TAKING AWAY a child’s lunch and replacing it w/ govt food like this! Parents should decide. Which leads to my most significant complaint: FOOD LABELING!
The producers put this stuff in, and we aren’t told. That takes away MY freedom of choice!
Like sneaking water in ham/turkey/chicken, then selling it by the pound. Like replacing choice meat with select, and removing the GRADE label. Don’t even get me started on the Spanish labeling that makes it harder to find things, and impossible to read the tiny 2pt type used to squeeze it on the pkg., or the expiration date in code, or, embossed so you have to get the perfect glare of light to read it.
Or non-regulated, non-inspected food being imported, while choking us w regulations.

Corn fed beef is bad for you, grass fed is great, you can smell and taste the difference. The fats from corn fed are dangerous to your health the grass fed you need to eat since it’s high in omega 3 and 6. Corn fed has e coli in it’s gut because cows are not meant to eat corn (besides the corn is GMS and that ends up in the meat) Grass fed is safe from the majority of concerns we have in our meat being as they aren’t fed GMO, no steroids, no antibiotics, no growth hormones and no standing in cow pies up to their ankles 24/7 in some stockyard for the majority of their life.

The BLBT is a FILLER. It does not replace meat. It is mixed with regular ground beef to EXTEND it, to stretch it further. Stop taking away our choices! Give us the FACTS and let US decide!! And we deserve FACTS, not sensationalized, biased slang like “slime.” We’ve all heard the phrase about sausage making. There is a reason that phrase exists. Some thing we eat looks pretty gross before it gets to our plate.

Posted on March 9, 2012 at 7:53amyou can not have any pudding, unless you eat the governments beat brand of meat, okay people i am sorry to do this, but you leave me no choice,i will have to force you to eat our great food, while the we the commie regime eat lobster, you must be regulated to eat it,you will have to have food insurance, aka”" obama care.”" and if that don’t work, you will be labeled a hate and fear monger for not liking our nasty smelling food, then we will have to just make you eat it in anyway the regime sees fit. so eat the damn food and like it, don’t worry about the side effects, just do as you are told,

Posted on March 9, 2012 at 9:16amThis is like the government dictating what we have to eat while they are eating prime meals and telling us we must get obama care while they have the best. The rules don’t apply to them and that is one of the problems. They are no better than anyone else!! We need leaders who stand with us the people.

Posted on March 9, 2012 at 7:53amAs i have been a meat cutter (butcher,to the uneducated) all my life, as has my father, and his father,i can say will all due honesty, this guy is an idiot, and a lier.First of all, “trimming” are just that, trimmed meat, fat and sinew off of various cuts of meat. They do NOT contain salmanila,if they did, they could not be sold in the first place.Second, the statement, its “not fit for human consumption” is and out and out lie.I could go on and totally trash everything this idiot said, but i will not.I will leave it up to those of you with half a brain, to research it yourself. This was nothing but a publicity stun by a left wing british moron…..

Posted on March 9, 2012 at 8:38amYou forgot to mention you brother owns a butcher shop. And he can veify that what you are saying is true. If you read the B.S. on the internet this crap starts out being trimmings and goes so far as to being stuff scraped off of the floor and workers shoes. Don’t believe everything you read. Would I use it in my meat market? No. Would I eat it? Wouldn’t bother me. Alot of these scare tactics are brought on by PETA. And thats all I got to say about that.

Posted on March 9, 2012 at 8:53amNo offense but “not fit for human consumption” is in the eye of the beholder. The thing that really bothers me about processed meats is the chemicals involved. Amonia etc. And it’s not just processed meats. Cows, pigs even chickens are fed hormones and God only knows what to increase body weight/meat. I know the so-called experts tell us that this stuff is perfectly safe but then again the experts have also told us various drugs, foods etc were safe too. Turned out they were wrong.

“They do NOT contain salmanila,if they did, they could not be sold in the first place.”
Big recalls of government inspected meats in 2011;
Tyson – Beef – 131,000 pounds
Cargil – Turkey – 36,000,000 pounds
Jennie O – Turkey – 55,000 pounds
Then there was 2,200 pounds of beef in Michigan, another for 900 pounds, ad nauseum…
ALL POSSIBLY CONTAMINATED.
CDC estimates that each year roughly 1 in 6 Americans (or 48 million people) gets sick, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die of foodborne diseases.
You say you wouldn’t use that at your markets? I applaud you! THAT is why people should go to a locally owned meat market. But the question is do you grind 1,000′s of pounds of hamburger from 10 or 20 or 30 different animals all at the same time? All it takes is ONE to contaminate the whole batch.
What gets me is the 3,000 deaths per YEAR figure! The CDC prohibits raw milk because they claim 2 or 3 deaths OVER 11 YEARS. Seems they may be lying about that!

Report Post »Meat cannot leave a killing plant with salmonila period, though it is possible, some could. Most contamination occurs because of cleanliness, or lack there of.Most contaminated meat also occurs in kill to shelf plants, where cross contamination is most likely to occur. My father owned a meat market for more than 30 years, not once did we have salmonila occur, nor had anyone EVER gotten sick from out products. My brother (Madmilo) and i could rip this to shreds all day long on here, truth is, you people will believe what you want, and most wont be convinced, because a so called chef says its true.Dig deaper into why contamination occured at these plants, truth is, they are most likely dirty, and the fed. meat inspecters are payed off,and most occur in northern states, check it out……

“Meat cannot leave a killing plant with salmonila period”
Killing plant? Shelf plant? I don‘t care what type of ’plant’ it is if the government is inspecting them.
I take it that all those recalls, illnesses and deaths, like the following one, are just silly rumors?
“Cargill Inc. is pulling back almost 36 million pounds (16,300 metric tons) of ground turkey — one of the biggest recalls in U.S. history — after a salmonella outbreak linked to one death and more than 70 illnesses in 26 states.”

I see a synergy between two departments developing.
