USDA Buys 7 Million Pounds of ‘Pink Slime’ For School Lunches

School lunch programs have been in the spotlight recently. Just last week, the Blaze posted two stories about a North Carolina school where the food police were aggressively monitoring lunches that parents give to their children. Earlier this year, First Lady Michelle Obama lead a very public campaign to announce that healthier foods would be coming to school cafeterias and military mess halls.

Today, many parents will be questioning the wisdom of a government-controlled school lunch program. Why? Because the Feds have announced that the USDA is buying seven million pounds of something that is affectionately known as “pink slime.”

School Lunches to Get 7 Million Pounds of Pink Slime

The seven million pounds of this frankenmeat product purchased by the USDA is not a new addition to the lunch programs in schools, just a substantial increase. The New York Times reported that in 2009 the U.S. government purchased 5.5 million pounds of the stuff.

Pink slime is a mixture of leftover trimmings, sinew, and other beef parts culled from a cow once the expensive and more recognizable cuts of meat have been harvested and sent to a butcher. The collection of leftovers is spun in a centrifuge to remove excess fat, washed in a disinfecting solution and then minced for use in various applications.

Pink slime is allowed to make up as much as 15% of the ground beef you might be purchasing at from your local grocery store. And according to some industry experts, the concoction may be in as much as 70% of the ground beef found in America. Gerald Zirnstein, the scientist who first coined the phrase “pink slime” when he worked at the USDA, told ABC news that calling any package that contains it “fresh ground beef” constitutes ” economic fraud:”

School Lunches to Get 7 Million Pounds of Pink Slimevideo platformvideo managementvideo solutionsvideo player

Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver is not a fan of this stuff. He recently waged a very public campaign against pink slime and managed to convince McDonald’s to stop using it in their hamburgers.

Perhaps the decision from Mickey D‘s was inspired by this segment on Oliver’s TV show:

Joining McDonald’s in pledging to stop using pink slime is Burger King and Taco Bell.

The cost savings realized by adding the ammonia treated mixture of trimmings to real ground beef amounts to about 3 cents a pound. And there have been reports from schools and prisons where these burgers are served claiming that the meat smells and tastes of ammonia. And yet the USDA is increasing the amount of pink slime purchased for the national school lunch programs.

If the cost savings are minimal and the fast food industry is removing pink slime from its considerable food distribution network, will the government respond in kind?

I’m fortunate enough to live in a “rural” area where I can purchase beef that was raised and butchered all withing about 10 miles of my house. If you buy a 1/4, 1/2 or whole bee) you get everything steaks, roasts etc. For less per pound than you would by this pink slime burger at the local super market.
I would encourage everyone to seek out and support local meat lockers, processors and small farmers and ranchers if you are still lucky enough to have them.
This story just goes to show you cannot trust the big producers to provide healthy and wholesome food.

But I Trust The Government. This is what you get in the free school lunch program when you let the Federal Government take over.

Pink slime has been used for years without problem. Ammonia contains nitrogen just like protein does so its just another form of protein. Did you know that ammonia is a antiseptic just like alcohol. I guess that explains why hospitals use ammonia instead of alcohol on your arm before giving injections; ahh, but they don’t.

      Obama Knows About Pink Slime

This explains why the Obama family only eats certified Kobe Beef at $150/lb. The USDA outlawed peanut butter in the free school lunch program and substituted beef flavored pink slime. Chicken nuggets must also contain pink slime too. Our troops are also being made to eat pink slime in 50% beef and 50% slime.

Right focus on the USDA as if they act on there own or produce the stuff. We have the best politicians money can buy on both sides of the isle. And who do you think can afford to buy and own them. Big corporations and the wealthy. Our entire food industry is a fraud and much, if not most of what is used in process and prepared foods is pink slim or worse. Eat grass fed beef, pastured chicken, turkey, eggs and milk products, raw milk cheese and organic vegetables, fruit and bread. Eat 30% less of high quality foods and your food bill will be the same and you will feel a lot better. It’s that simple. Save the calories for a good beer or wine.

      Rabblechat;

Many years ago, when a teen, my parents would drive 70 miles to get our beef direct from the farm. Now I go to one of my friends and get it from them. We raise our own free range chickens for meat and eggs and she wants to add goats this summer meanwhile I’m thinking rabbits (great meat bad cute factor). Of course we have to supplement with venison (poor me).

I KNOW what is in my food.

When I worked in the city I took a bus to work. You would be surprised at the number of people that think meat comes from a grocery store shelf. They can’t connect the cute little animal with a steak or rabbit stew, etc. When you get on the subject of manure they will actually turn green…

Taco Bell and Burger Thing are going to get calls about their use of this. No more business from me until I know it is removed or what they put it in!

Soylent green is much better for you than beef – not the stuff in the movie which was people, but what they ate in the book. Soylent is a combination of soybeans and lentils, which they ate because nobody could afford meat anymore. Add some split peas and spinach and it comes out green and has just about the best ratio of cost to nutritional value of any food in the world, though I do love me some hamburger if I get it from a butcher I know and trust.

To all Liberals who Hate Corporations and love the Obama’s
Note this clip. ” Joining McDonald’s in pledging to stop using pink slime is Burger King and Taco Bell.”
I bet they did not know anything more about it than we did. The FDA Called it Meat. So I do not blaim
McDonalds and others or myself. I made the mistake of trusting the Government to keep us safe”
I now feel so stupid. Machell Obama I guess in her decision to tell us what we can and can not eat in the schools did not seem to have a problem with the FDA. She is in a position to have talked to them and get some answers about the food.
But this is not new. In the 80s the FDA tried to add Radiation to the food.
They stated that the food would not be radio active. This is true. But guess what. When you radiate food you change it. Gama Radiation is Ionizing radiation. That means it RIPs Electrons from Molocules. When you do this the Molocule is now something new. Not what it was. Thus a Mango
is no longer a mango. Beef is no longer beef. It is something else and we do not know what it is.
I do not know what chemical reactions Amonia has on meat. But breath a little of it and see what happens. Again it changes the makeup chemicly of what you are eating. Not much differance than Food iradiation. I do not care if no amonia stays on what is left. It made the chences already. That is why the bacteria are dead. They were chemicly altered. No longer able to sustain life.
A lot of bacteria can not live on ira

Industrial waste products in food. Just like the Pink Slime and that is a good name for it. Some say ( in this very same blog or comment area) it is sensationalism and that we naturally have Ammonia in our systems. This is a misleading statement.
The ammonia in our system is for a different reason and is not for food. Poop is also natural. But is it good to eat? Is it good for you? Did you ever watch the Movie “ Human centipede” The Video about
Pink Slime said. “ Ammonia gas was passed over the remains ( another good word for this Crap)
to make it Safe”. I do not believe it makes it safe. Sure it kills the bacteria. But why does it kill the bacteria? Because it changes the bacteria chemically. The Bacteria are dead because they have been chemically altered. Run a mop with ammonia on it over the food and it will kill the Germs. But the reason it kills them is the exact reason this stuff is not safe as food. No dam way. It has been chemically altered. What is it after it was soaked in ammonia? No one knows and if they say they do they are 1. Stupid or 2. Liars. We do not know all of the chemicals and compounds in the remains that are to become Pink Slime. And thus we can not say we know what all compounds will be affected. One thing we do know is they are affected. So are living organisms on the stuff. Both the safe and the dangerous ones. Ammonia is not smart and knows only to change the chemistry of the bad bacteria. It changes all of them and they die. So the

This is the stuff that McDonald‘s recently said it’s not going to use anymore. Had to sell it somewhere!
Corn fed beef is bad for you, grass fed is great, you can smell and taste the difference. The fats from corn fed are dangerous to your health the grass fed you need to eat since it’s high in omega 3 and 6. Corn fed has e coli in it’s gut because cows are not meant to eat corn (besides the corn is GMS and that ends up in the meat) Grass fed is safe from the majority of concerns we have in our meat being as they aren’t fed GMO, no steroids, no antibiotics, no growth hormones and no standing in cow pies up to their ankles 24/7 in some stockyard for the majority of their life.

nobody is comparing a prime tenderloin with BLBT (aka “pink slime”)
The BLBT is a FILLER. It does not replace meat. It is mixed with regular ground beef to EXTEND it, to stretch it further. Just as you or I put oatmeal or bread into ground beef to make it go further in the name of meatloaf. There IS a place for fillers. Just LABEL IT ACCORDINGLY! That‘s all I’m saying.
Nobody ever believed fast food joints were using the same grade of ground beef you or I use at home. That is why it looks and tastes different. But, it is also why fast food is CHEEEEP!
Stop taking away our choices! Give us the FACTS and let US decide!! And we deserve FACTS, not sensationalized, biased slang like “slime.” We’ve all heard the phrase about sausage making. There is a reason that phrase exists. Some thing we eat looks pretty gross before it gets to our plate.
One man‘s haggis is another man’s boiled guts stuffed with lungs, heart, and liver).
I don’t want to eat beef tongue or to eat tripe, or pickled pigs feet, or hog snout, or chitterlings, or even beets. But, I’m not about to infringe on YOUR RIGHTS and try to stop you from eating them, or serving them. No, I’m going to RESPECT YOUR RIGHTS. However, I DO expect you to respect MY rights, and TELL ME when you are mixing fillers into ground beef. Just tell me. That’s all. It’s a really cool concept called FREEDOM and LIBERTY!!

Just because others might make a bad choice does not mean that I do or will. I am soooo tired of the food police and the “righteous eaters” (you know the ones who look at you like you were the one who killed Jesus when you eat a twinkie.) I don’t want to be made to eat the pink slime, nor do I want to be forced to eat organic whatever. It is MY choice to either eat corn fed beef or grass fed beef and mine ALONE. I am healthy and thin. If I want to go and have a twinkie and coke (not diet) then so be it. It is my decision, no one else’s. On that note, I think I might run out and get a large Mocha with WHOLE MILK….oh the horror!!!

Tom, You are right that most of us do not understand what is actually in the things we eat. A friend of mine will not eat hot dogs or bologna after working at a meat processing plant. I worked at a cheese processing plant that created the cheese powder for things like mac & cheese dinners, cheese puff & tortilla chips and the like (did not want to name brands). It is amazing what can end up in those batches. If all these things were reported on the news, a lot of people would stop eating these type of foods.

I’ll never forget the first few days and weeks after my family was relocated to Kuwait. My children were shocked to see the carcases of goats and lambs hanging in the window of the meat locker at the local grocery. In Egypt, we were told when buying meat out in the market that you want to choose from the carcases covered in flies. The reason-being, the carcases free from flies had been spraid with pesticides not uncommon to RAID. After reading this story and watching the video, I doubt I will buy prepackaged meat again. And to those commenting about how the ammonia is not a big factor- are you out of your mind? Read the label won’t you. You are not suppose to ingest the stuff and inhaleing it is not a good idea either. Certainly makes you wonder. I betcha, in a few years they will be able to connect this “process” to a number of health issues, birth defects, and perhaps even miscarriages.

yes they think its safe what really horrifies me is this is in grocery store meat, I personally buy all of my beef from a relative who raises and butchers for our family and other organic butchers to make a living. the connective tissues especially the spinal cord are where the chances of mad cow disease increase. eating these portions of the cow are the riskiest areas. it is just disgusting I am having a flashback of a story when bush was president of them buying what we rednecks refer to as spent hens. they are hens past their laying years and are considered dog food. they have huge concentrates of listeria and other fun diseases. I am just wondering if because the usda doesnt subsidize so many farmers we are ending up with this garbage as some sort of payoff to the ag business.

Would I use it in my meat market? No. Would I eat it? Wouldn’t bother me. Alot of these scare tactics are brought on by PETA. And thats all I got to say about that.

No offense but “not fit for human consumption” is in the eye of the beholder. The thing that really bothers me about processed meats is the chemicals involved. Amonia etc. And it’s not just processed meats. Cows, pigs even chickens are fed hormones and God only knows what to increase body weight/meat. I know the so-called experts tell us that this stuff is perfectly safe but then again the experts have also told us various drugs, foods etc were safe too. Turned out they were wrong.

      Drago, Madmilo;

“They do NOT contain salmanila,if they did, they could not be sold in the first place.”

      Big recalls of government inspected meats in 2011;

      Tyson – Beef – 131,000 pounds
      Cargil – Turkey – 36,000,000 pounds
      Jennie O – Turkey – 55,000 pounds

Then there was 2,200 pounds of beef in Michigan, another for 900 pounds, ad nauseum…

      ALL POSSIBLY CONTAMINATED.

CDC estimates that each year roughly 1 in 6 Americans (or 48 million people) gets sick, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die of foodborne diseases.

You say you wouldn’t use that at your markets? I applaud you! THAT is why people should go to a locally owned meat market. But the question is do you grind 1,000′s of pounds of hamburger from 10 or 20 or 30 different animals all at the same time? All it takes is ONE to contaminate the whole batch.

What gets me is the 3,000 deaths per YEAR figure! The CDC prohibits raw milk because they claim 2 or 3 deaths OVER 11 YEARS. Seems they may be lying about that!

Meat cannot leave a killing plant with salmonila period, though it is possible, some could. Most contamination occurs because of cleanliness, or lack there of.Most contaminated meat also occurs in kill to shelf plants, where cross contamination is most likely to occur. My father owned a meat market for more than 30 years, not once did we have salmonila occur, nor had anyone EVER gotten sick from out products. My brother (Madmilo) and i could rip this to shreds all day long on here, truth is, you people will believe what you want, and most wont be convinced, because a so called chef says its true.Dig deaper into why contamination occured at these plants, truth is, they are most likely dirty, and the fed. meat inspecters are payed off,and most occur in northern states, check it out……

Killing plant? Shelf plant? I don‘t care what type of ’plant’ it is if the government is inspecting them.

I take it that all those recalls, illnesses and deaths, like the following one, are just silly rumors?

“Cargill Inc. is pulling back almost 36 million pounds (16,300 metric tons) of ground turkey — one of the biggest recalls in U.S. history — after a salmonella outbreak linked to one death and more than 70 illnesses in 26 states.”
