USDA Predicts Surging Food Prices in Coming Year

USDA Predicts Increased Food Prices

The USDA has released their projections for food price inflation in 2011/2012, showing troubling forecasts that may send you to the grocery store today, before paying higher prices tomorrow. The report shows that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for all food increased 0.8 percent between 2009 and 2010, and is forecasted to increase 3.5 to 4.5 percent in 2011.

Bruce Krasting notes that the USDA’s projections are especially troubling considering Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke has said he wants to contain inflation (although excluding food and energy) at less than 2%. Food inflation is running at double his target. Writing in Business Insider, Krasting says the problem is even more serious than the USDA indicates and that global demand is set to push prices even higher as time goes on:

“It’s not surprising that the US pays less for food as a percentage of income than any other country. But the comparisons are still interesting. The US spends 6.5% of disposable income for food. Poorer countries like Nigeria, Kenya and Cameroon are forced to pay ~45% of incomes to put food on the table. The high population countries are as follows
Vietnam = 38%

Indonesia = 32%

India = 28%

China = 22%

I find these numbers troubling. There is only one direction for them to go. The developing countries with big populations will see greater gains in income, with that will lead to increased food consumption. Approximately 30% of income goes to food in these areas.  It’s hard not to see that this is going to push up the prices the globe pays for everything we eat.

For example, the USDA put the per person food cost in China at $129 in 2000. Today that number is $360 (280% increase). Over the same period the USA consumption increased only 42%.”

Items that are expected to inflate the most include  beef, cooking oils, and seafood. Processed vegetables and beverages were projected to to see smaller changes in the CPI. The Wall Street Journal notes that “the midpoint of the new USDA outlook signals the sharpest acceleration in the food inflation rate from one year to the next since 1978, and makes the increase itself the biggest since 2008, when prices rose 5.5%.” While things may seem bleak for the rest of the year, the USDA projects that prices will rise only 2.5 percent next year.

The report also found that food-at-home prices increased 0.3 percent, the lowest annual increase since 1967, while food-away-from-home prices rose 1.3 percent in 2010. Total food expenditures for all food consumed in the U.S. were $1,240.4 billion in 2010, a 3.4-percent increase from $1,199.8 billion in 2009. Spending on food away from home accounted for 47.9 percent of total food expenditures in 2010; spending for food at home accounted for 52.1 percent.

Bloomberg Business Week notes that the Bureau of Labor Statistics earlier this month said consumer food costs rose 0.4 percent in September, capping a 12- month gain of 4.7 percent.

      I highly doubt we’ll see 25%. Even ShadowStats only indicates about 7% inflation this year. Probably more like 10% at most, more likely lower. Anyway, look at the bright side, 25% and Obama is unelectable no matter what.

To make matters worse,,,,many foods packaged are now in SMALLER packages (with the price increase also.) No inflation???? pull your head out. Oh yea,,,,it IS going to get worse. I forsee many farmers markets trying to establish,,,,but then, the gov’t is trying to shut those down, now, aren’t they????

      Interesting observations. At my local store I’ve seen my staple microwave dinners increase about 10%, milk hasn’t gotten any more expensive, paper towels, peanuts, and tortilla chips have come down. I haven’t paid enough attention to notice anything else.

      Not to condescend the condescending commenter, but apparently it hasn’t occurred to him that prices changing at his local grocer have more to do with local demand and the financial situation of that particular firm than anything else. I’ve seen my 10-day bundle remain relatively stable over the last year I’ve been going to this particular store.

      ShadowStats.com has a pretty good measure of inflation. The real rate is probably somewhere between their measure and the CPI-U (for Steve: that means the government’s preferred measure). Both of those measures indicate an ~3.5% increase in inflation for 2011, up from ~8% and ~2% respectively.

      My lovely bride of 27 years went out Friday to pick up the next weeks supply of general stuff. As soon as she got home she said “you really don’t want to know what I just spent on this.” For two adults she dropped $280 for 6 bags of the usual (cold cuts, bread, milk, coffee, etc). 2 months ago the same amount of goodies was $150 (give or take). We’ve been feeling it for just the both of us. I don’t know how folks on a tight budget do it. Tough desicions…. food or medicine….. medicine of clothes…… food or gas. We really need to get Obama out of office. Unfortunately none of the other candidates running really fits the bill either. None have any real plan for the economy that will actually accomplish anything. It’ll just keep getting worse and nobody will care enough to really do anything to prevent it. It’s all part of their one world government scheme.

      There is one that will turn the ship around and put the country back on her intended course. I am talking about Ron Paul. Yes, he is the only one out there even talking about the constitution and the limits it places on government. Progressive Gov’t R & D’s that have caused this tragic situation. The establishement republicans are as progressive as the democrats. Ron Paul is not an establishement candidate. they want the FED in place because it feeds their elitist machine! Ron Paul will put an end to the theft by ending the control that the FED has on our money and monitary policy. He will restore the constitutional limted government and he will re-establish sound money through a gold standard valuation.

      That is why you don;’t hear about Ron Paul from the Media Republican or Democrat, because they are both different heads of the same beast. DON’T BE FOOLED AGAIN!! You know what I say is true. Research Ron Paul and his proposed policies before you make a huge mistake this next election.

      Cost is a big issue – however food availability is much much more serious.
      It will not take much for this world economy to dissolve into chaos.
      Just one possibility is what would happen if war broke out in the middle east (not too far fetched)
      and oil stopped – that would mean gas prices go through the roof. – do you think you will be getting your florida oranges in NY?

      No one saw this coming right?

      You have to be living under a rock not to see that food is going up. The food chain has been disrupted by all the climatic weather the planet has been going through for a couple of years now. This affects planting and harvest. Dramatic winter snow melts flooded the lands and heavy rains soaked fields in the midwest keeping farmers from planting. Overseas flooding in Asia also hurt the rice crops and continues. Food will rise because of many others reasons to include droughts in Texas this year. Stock now while you can. Rice is still fairly cheap and you can store it for long periods. Buy a rice cooker! They work real good for dummies who can’t figure out how to cook raw rice. Makes me want to go out and pick up a few things.

      Half a million, try a heck of a lot more than that. A new combine costs that much, not including the tractors to pull it, the grain bins and dryers, trucks and trailers to haul it out of the fields, a shop to fix all that equipment, and more stuff than you can ever think of. By the way, this year has one of the biggest corn crops ever, regardless of the weather. Most full time farmers, the small amount that there is, have the best science and technology that’s ever been available and 1 acre produces quite a bit more than even 10 years ago. It just cost farmers so much more because of the fuel and fertilizer, etc. And, don‘t get me started on useless regulations designed to bring this country to it’s knees. That’s what is killing us, not the weather. Believe me, my family is life long farmers that work about 2500 acres in wheat, corn, soybeans and hay. It’s the government.

Keep borrowing that money to keep 900 military bases open (many in places we don’t need like Germany, Japan). Yep, keep borrowing that money to pay welfare/Medicaid/Social Security checks.

      And where does all that borrowed money come from —- the tax payer’s pocket via inflation!

    These % of increases do not appear to be correct for our area. I went to the grocery store for the first time in a couple years with my wife. I was amazed!!! She kept telling me I was not giving her enough money because the prices had gone through the roof. I would not have beleived they had risen over 100% in the past 2 years. Everything has gone up. Our gasoline bill 2 years ago ran about $100 to $125 a week – now we are lucky to get by with $250 a week. When added up, it cost us $1000 more in fuel and groceries a month. I started a good size garden and have been able to put up more than enough veggies to last our family of 8 until next growing season.

      I agree, we have seen it for a while. But, it is good that Beck is trying to wake up more people. I started getting prepared with emergency food storage from foodinsurancetour.com a long time ago.

    Overpaid idiots ! I was at Wal-Mart this week and bought a head of lettuce and 4 tomatos and the bill was $7.78. I’m shocked at their lies, but then they do work for obama. I’m on SSI and by the end of the month it comes down to choices of food, gas or medicine. I chose food !

      I was listening to a Ron Paul video where he said the government lies about inflation (are we surprised). He said they average several unrelated things to arrive at the inflation number. True food inflation is 9% (at the time of the video and I can’t remember the date).

      People, stock up on cotton clothing. Two years in a row the crops have failed. Prices are gonna skyrocket because of that and then the inflation on top of it. I bought dozens of jeans and socks and have them stored for the future.

    I seem to remember some crazy guy that resembles the “Pillsbury Dough Boy” saying the same EXACT things not to long ago before he got his own GBTV show.
    I also seem to remember the talking heads making fun of him for the “chicken little, the sky is falling syndrome”.
    It appears the sky may indeed be falling. [on low food prices anyway]
    I listened and watched. Im stocked up a plenty nowadays. Thanks Glen!

      When Congress decided to give Fannie and Freddie the power to make unbacked housing loans — Ron Paul told them it would create a housing bubble and all this would follow. Congress was warned, but they went ahead like this inflation is what they WANT! With all the spending, both Bush and Obama, I really thing it’s a global redistribution of wealth both parties want. Bush didn’t close the border, Obama didn’t close the border. That’s part of it too. Global government is the goal of both parties.

    Actually the big food price surge started in 2007 as the democrats took control of the house and the senate in both branches of congress, that was just a year prior to the economic collapse. The congress controls the purse strings of US government, not the president, The president can only spend the money the congress approves for His budget, by the way Obama has never had a budget approved since he took office. He submitted one in which his own party voted down the first of this year! Who fault, George W, I don’t think so! I think the dems wanted the economy to be poor for the 2008 elections so they could have a better chance of winning and it worked. They are using the same scheme this year in a different way, blaming the GOP when they only control the house, what a lie!

      They wanted the economic collapse of the United States, and one more source of the pressure for people to turn to the Fed’s for solution is engineering food shortages and higher prices; this has been enhanced by the harvest shortages of exported commodities of wheat, corn and rice and such from the nations of Australia and Russia/Ukraine, along with parts of Africa where winter wheat supplies are transported in from…if I understand the reports correctly.

      Dems take control of senate and house in 2007. Their 2007 energy policy, wind , solar and renewable energy (corn). Republicans wanted oil, coal, nuclear energy and the above. Dems said we are in charge now.
      The United Nations ask them not to increase the use of corn to make fuel by 700% because a Billion people were facing starvation, they did it anyway. The enviromentalist asked them not to do it because it caused more pollution and enviromental harm than using oil for fuel, they did it anyway, why? They wanted a dem as president and they knew that Bush and the republicans would be blamed for the high prices for fuel and food. It work and now we are paying for their love of power. They did this on purpose, how evil is this?

      Undeniably bad ain’t the worst of it. If you were a retired mailman like me, you’d know that they cut our pensions by raising our taxes and the cost of living allowance we used to get is gone. With the high cost of food and fuel, it gets harder to get by. On top of that the Socialist city council here, after driving nearly all the business away, announced they will raise our property taxes by one full percentage point. There are also tax levies on the ballot next month. If they pass, we are screwed. Food prices continue to rise and finding deals gets harder. We stocked up for Winter and hope to weather it, but heating our home is a major investment now. Nope, that Hope and Change thing sure as hell don’t make it here, and it was never supposed to, but it got that a**hole elected.

      Invest in a wood stove – we did, people give away the wood if you are willing to go and get it. We installed one last year – Mid size stove with a 2200 sqft home – never turned on the heat – Saved average of $300 a month for the 3 cold months and $150-$200 surrounding months – GREAT INVESTMENT!!!

    This is what Obama and his handlers want. When famine hits and people can’t even afford to eat, the OWS whiners will really have something to cry (and then riot) about.

    Those people behind the scenes at OSW want to collapse the system. It’s hard to do when most Americans are sitting at home fat, fed and comfortable, so they’ll just have to change that…

      Bush spending was just below Obama’s — 2nd most in history. Bush didn’t close the border. Obama doesn’t close the border. Looks like both Democrats and Republicans are playing the “break America” game.

      Every time I go into the store now, I prepare mentally for the soring prices. Don’t listen to their “facts” on percentages. I was stocking up long before the price gouging started (thank goodness). Never thought I’d see peanutbutter “on sale” at $5.80 a jar, and that’s not a super size, mind you. Any kind of oil – corn oil, olive oil – forget it. Paper products- Never thought I’d see multi-rolls priced at over $12 to $14. These “experts” should take a stroll down a shopping isle and see for themselves. I do believe my grocer is trying to keep the prices as low as they can, but I also understand they have to make a profit in order to survive. This is going to be rough on all of us, but for those who have been listening, we have known this all along.

    The EPA is now regulating DUST. Yes, I said dust …. like farmers’ dust! It’s one of the reasons Ron Paul wants to get rid of the EPA and their UN Agenda 21 global warming mandates.

    Here is a video of farmers speaking out about the regulation
