USDA to Spend $10 Million to Help Fund Michelle Obama‘s ’Food Deserts’

USDA to Spend $10 Million to Help Fund Michelle Obamas Food Deserts

First, it was the creation of a new “plate” graphic that instructs Americans about what they should be eating. Now, the Agriculture Department is infusing more financial resources into a grant program that will promote farmer’s markets in rural and urban areas across America.

This year, the USDA will provide $10 million in grants, thus doubling what was allocated during Fiscal Year 2010, to help create roadside stands and healthy food outlets. These new venues will be strategically placed in “food deserts.” In the past, Michelle Obama has described these areas as places where “…families wind up buying their groceries at the local gas station or convenience store, places that offer few, if any, healthy options.”

This uptick in government investment coincides with the belief that these food deserts contribute to obesity. Below, WOAI-TV covers how these healthy-food deficient areas impact residents:

Do you live in a food desert? by LocalNews-GrabNetworks

CNSNews.com has more on Obama’s new plans to remedy the issue:

The priority this year is to bring fresh food to people living in rural and urban “food deserts,” a concept advanced by First Lady Michelle Obama. Food deserts are defined as areas with limited access to affordable and nutritious food, particularly those composed of predominantly lower-income neighborhoods and communities…

The Farmers’ Market Promotion Program (FMPP) funds projects that “contribute to the economic and physical health of communities around the country,” the USDA says. The goal is to “increase domestic consumption of agricultural commodities” by improving and expanding farmers markets, or creating new ones.

Since 1994, the number of farmers markets included in the USDA National Farmers Market Directory has expended more than three-fold, rising from 1,755 to 6,132. The end goal here is to inevitably provide better acces to healthier foods in areas that are extremely limited in their grocery availability. The deadline for these competitive grants is July 1.

According to Rutgers University, we are too stupid to feed ourselves correctly. (I love the part about some of the families receiving the lessons online. If you have access to the internet AND YOU REALLY CARE, you can find everything you need to know about a healthy lifestyle without the government having to cram instructions down your throat.) The government can’t pee away our money fast enough!

I’m glad you used the SB 510 info. here is some usda & cnsnews to see where the money is going to be used for. Money isn’t needed to be used if your “corner fruit stand” is allowed on the corners. I use to work at a “corner fruit stand” & the produce was literally fresh picked and cheaper then the grocery store & yes to today’s so called “farmers markets”. No money was needed from our government what so ever.

The maximum amount awarded for any one proposal cannot exceed $100,000. Entities eligible to apply include agricultural cooperatives, producer networks, producer associations, local governments, nonprofit corporations, public benefit corporations, economic development corporations, regional farmers’ market authorities and Tribal governments.

The money is to be spent on the marketing and promotion of farmers markets; consumer education and outreach; equipment purchase; transportation and delivery; training farmers in business planning and record-keeping; or waste management and “green technologies.”

I live in rural Kansas. Our small town has approx. 150 people. This includes the farms outside of town. The closest grocery is two blocks from my house. This rural store has just about anything you could want. Including fresh veggies and fruit. What they don’t have we grow ourselves. We also share our harvests with each other. We don’t need Mrs.Obama or the USDA spending our hard earned money (i.e. taxes) to supply Farmers Markets. We grow our own and we take care of our own. And we’re better people for it. We’re not the downtrodden redneck hicks the elite think we are. We take care of ourselves, unlike the people the government beats down just to control.

Ten million bucks is a lot. And it’s being spent on what? To provide poor people with an alternative to gas station food? Maybe that would allow the rural poor to buy healthier foods. And it would support farmer’s markets that helps small farmers sell their produce, and maybe stay in business.

But as someone said, who cares about the diet of the poor and small farmers? That’s communism. I know Jesus said all that stuff about helping the poor in the Holy Bible. Yaddah, yaddah. We all know that what Jesus really meant was that on Earth, we should elect people who make sure that Christians in government give no money to the poor, but instead make sure that the United States of America supports the wealthiest few, who already own 95% of the country (don’t even start with the Bible quotes about the rich).

For example, right now oil companies are making record profits. Thank God! It’s a little tough at the pump for you and me, but Exxon is posting record profits, as is the Will of God. They’re not hiring people but they are making more money than ever in history. And the US government is giving them ONLY five billion dollars a year in subsidies.

Instead redistributing the wealth to those people in rural areas we should be giving more to the oil companies. Instead of $5,000,000,000 we could be giving them $5,010,000,000.

If we did that, we‘d be doing God’s work, and He would lay blessing upon our land for the offering unto Him.

There is a reason they don’t have FOOD STORES in some neighborhoods .. between the stealing and the min. wage they can’t afford to stay open.. so they close down.. it would make more sense to STOP food stamps and have the government pick out the foods they want the people getting food stamps to eat and deliver it to them.. it would solve the problem of them SELLING their food stamps too..

Do you recall which country was targeted in this recent e.coli scare? Spain. Why Spain? You may recall that leaked cables from Wikileaks revealed that Spain resisted the introduction of GMOs into its agricultural system, even as the U.S. government covertly threatened political retaliation for its resistance. This false blaming of Spain for the e.coli deaths is probably retaliation for Spain’s unwillingness to jump on the GMO bandwagon. (http://www.naturalnews.com/030828_G…)
That’s the real story behind the economic devastation of Spain’s vegetable farmers. It’s one of the subplots being pursued alongside this e.coli superbug scheme.

By the way, the most likely explanation of where this strain of e.coli was bioengineered is that the drug giants came up with it in their own labs. Who else has access to all the antibiotics and equipment needed to manage the targeted mutations of potentially thousands of e.coli colonies? The drug companies are uniquely positioned to both carry out this plot and profit from it. In other words, they have the means and the motive to engage in precisely such actions.

If you are going to presume to quote me, you ignorant little liberal puke, at least get it right. This story was not ABOUT “feeding the poor”, it was about MOO-chelle Obama spending ten million dollars of our money to promote her idiotic “food desert” notion where none exists. HELLO? People living in rural areas ALREADY grow their own food. They don’t need MOO-chelle telling them how to do it. This has nothing at all to do with religion, and you should stop dragging Jesus into the middle of every conversation. I doubt he has little to do with anthing you are involved in, so climb down off your freaking high horse and STFU already.

This is going to be fun .Deep. deep inside the Obama government building works thousands of high paid desk squatters . Better know as the Governments top secret “generation 4 mega bite me” Web designers . These highly trained do nothings work on a daily bases putting government collected data of every stupid thing you could possibly think of .On the web .In the dazzling form of useless government web sights. At the end of one long hallway in a unmarked office are locked away Queen Obama’s top secret fundamental society changing projects …Such as “MyPlate” and “Fit Kids” .Other big projects such as Climate change and turtle crossings and the study of polar snow…As we saw last week they are keep secret and under lock and key until the projects are released on a ultimate Government web sight…Now the next office is a drab gray office with a desk and nothing more in it. This is the office of Tim Gethner….Tims job is to cover up the Billions the government is short every week on the payroll. On a typical day tim adds up the daily stack of payments he is usually short between 2 and 4 billion dollars a day.Around 3 pm Tim make his call to Bernenke at the fed so they know how much more money to print to cover the Obama government payroll checks. Tim is always angry .Stating as in MYPLATE the future cost of keeping everyone that work on it and employed and in government money for the rest of their lives is staggering. Tim states the Food Desert project will end up in b

Since we moved to the Carolinas–lived in both now–I will vouch for something here–there are in fact many people who live in areas where they cannot possibly walk to a store and have no public transportation and I would not be surprised if they didn’t have cars–if you see what they live in–you’d be surprised if they do have cars. the county our SC house is in–the teachers literally send bagged lunches home with the kids on Friday thinking those kids may not eat all weekend. My first reaction to it was shock–and a question–WHY do they stay here where they cannot find jobs? I think there are many small businesses, very small, but there truly are folks here that have got to be generation-ally living off handouts. It does not appear to be in their DNA to improve their situation by moving on. Since we moved from WI all the way to Fargo in pursuit of a job and to OK when my hubby was young in pursuit of work in the early 80s–I know what its like to do that– and to have that kind of uprooted feeling all your life–I can understand wanting to stay by family and home–and some of them own their ‘shacks’ but I don’t think most do– it seems they accept their lot and figure its easier to be poor where you know folks than where you don’t. The problem is no the food desert its the folks who insist on beating dead horses, that have long stopped walking.

Many already take vouchers (issued by the county to food stamp recipients) for fresh fruits and vegetables at the area farmers’ markets.

Seeker, I was talking about, and said, “subsidies” for oil companies, not taxes. There’s a difference. And since oil companies are making record profits, AND the price of gas is going up, I agree there isn’t much of a connection between the two.

TP Grammy, I feel Christian love in your every clever insult and hateful remark (not).

Mikhail Kennedy says, “Giving my money to someone else is stealing.” Mikhail, let’s understand something here with a single example. How about the roads you drive on to go to work, the grocery store or wherever. Who paid for those and who pays to have them maintained? You pay a little in taxes certainly, but unless you make a quarter million bucks a year or more, you pay a whole lot less for the benefits of living in the US than the wealthy don’t you? So, YOU are stealing from the rich. The wealth is being redistributed to YOU.

And government aid to disaster areas like Joplin? That’s stealing too?

Anyway, you seem fine with letting the rich pay for your schools, fire department, street lights or whatever because that‘s somebody else’s money you are beneficiary of. You’re being hypocritical in my view.

So, it is now fully unveiled – the Constitution is irrelevant. All you have to do is divide powers up among bureaucracies and let them pass policies and programs to do whatever it is you wanted but could not do due to that nagging scrap of skin – The United States Constitution.

      Throw em all out.

The next pres is gonna be BUSY – I mean BUUUUUUUUUUUSY replacing all the heads of these bureaucracies and cleaning house. Can you imagine the whining we’ll here from this chicago-thug mob when they are told it is time to go?? LOLOL

There are plenty of farmers that do that already around where I live, and they do it of their own accord. The federal mismanagement government needs to stop subsidizing farms and farmers because the fed does not need to be anywhere near anyones’ food or food sources.
