‘Use at Your Own Risk’: Anonymous Releases Its Own Operating System

According to The Hacker News, the “hacktivist” collective Anonymous — or at least a sect of the group — has launched its own operating system – ”Anonymous-OS”.

The Hacker News warns that since the operating system was not developed by a “genuine source” it can be “backdoored” by law enforcement or other hackers, so “[use] at your own risk.”

The Peruvian news site RPP reports (translated by Google Translate) that it includes hacker-friendly tools such as Find Host IP, Anonymous HOIC, Ddosim, Slowloris, XChat IRC and Tor. Some of these are used to help launch DDoS attacks — distributed denial of service — on other websites, taking targets down by overloading them with a continual stream of traffic. RPP, like Hacker News, also states that the site could very well hold malware and even speculates that it could be a government strategy to identify Anonymous members.

The Anonymous-OS Tumblr site (via Technomania) states that the operating system was created “for educational purposes” and “to [check] the security of web pages.” If you were feeling brave, Anonymous-OS can be download free of charge from the Tumblr site.

Somewhat ironic coming from a group that frequently is associated with illegal online hacking, the Tumblr site kindly asks its members to not attack any of the pages created in the OS. “If you attack to any web page, might end up in jail because is a crime in most countries!”

Update: Gizmodo has reported that the OS is full of Trojan malware. Hence the warning to download at your own risk.

I dont think they are as powerful as they seem. Anybody can shut down a site. It isnt that hard I hear. Sure, I think it is illegal and horrible but these guys arent that big and dangerous.

I would never trust an OS like this one. With that said, Anonymous needs guidance. There are things that they stand for that we all can agree with, like exploiting child porn sites, but the way they go about conducting their business is giving them a bad wrap. Like they’re more concerned about their folklore image than actually making a difference.

I’m removing my current OS and replacing it with my new Anonymous OS. The more I hear about Anonymous, the more I like them.

Dude, they are openly saying it can be backdoored, second, do you really want to run an OS developed by active hackers with no identity? Word’s of advice, want another OS try Linux/Unix, Mac, or Windows (pick and choose).

If you still wanna screw around with this crazy new OS install it on a virtual environment (VMware, Parallels, VirtualBox etc…)

Before there was Anonymous-OS, there was Backtrack.

Throw that in with the other 70 bazillion linux distros that have virtually no users. Real security professionals use Backtrack.

can if you allow the big companies to auto hack back. If every time you breached a service it. either smashed you with 100 servers or force feeds you a virus. Just think if companies were allowed to pay an isp money to change the data stream to a specific ip address that is currently attacking them… Hackers are cowards the people they are picking on cant really pick back.

Its not to settle for a world without integrity. No matter what…just calling it like I see it. They do, without a doubt, roll with snitches…I don’t, no one I know will…no one I know ‘settles’ for snitches in their ranks…never settle. Your statement although factually ‘true’, overlooks the lack of integrity in society as a whole today. Very sad….anonymous claims a ‘moral high ground’…but lowers themselves to the level of gangsters, crooked politicians, traitor military, etc…society seems to accept lack of honor and integrity with a shrug…do not shrug…that is why society is the way it is, very sad.
