Utah Mall Accused of Kicking Out Customers for ‘Looking Too Gay’ & Having Visible Tattoos

The City Creek Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, is coming under fire amid reports that its staff has been kicking shoppers out for “looking too gay,” holding hands or having visible tattoos. The mall, which has only been open for one month, has allegedly been hit with numerous complaints over what some see as over-the-top rules and regulations. But shopping center executives are denying the charges levied against them.

One man took to Facebook, where the Daily Mail claims he complained that he was harassed by shopping center security guards for wearing women’s clothing. According to ABC 4, the man wrote, “I was in heels and my makeup was fierce. And they kick me out for looking too gay.”

Dallon Thorup, another individual who has frequented the mall, claims that mall cops spoke to him about his tattoo, a Chinese symbol on his upper arm.

“I got approached by someone that asked do you mind covering up?,” Thorup claimed in an interview with ABC4. “I laughed, and asked why, and he said, ‘Some people might find your tattoo offensive.’”

But managers for the City Creek Center are denying that this alleged treatment would be permissible based on the company’s code of conduct. Director of Marketing Dee Brewer says that holding hands, kissing and showing tattoos would not draw the attention of security officials.

“Any activity or conduct, which is detrimental to or inconsistent with a first-class, family oriented shopping center is prohibited,” reads the company’s code of conduct.

Some are blaming these alleged incidents on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as ABC4 reports that various individuals believe the church is enforcing the overtly-strict rules. Property Reserve, Inc., the commercial real estate arm of LDS, joined with Taubman Centers Inc., another real estate company, in launching the shopping center. Taubman has denied that the church is involved in City Creek’s rule-making.

And as the ABC4 report noted in its video report, many have said that they have never encountered any odd situations or bizarre interactions with mall security.

Now, it’s important to note: If there is any truth to these allegations, it’s entirely possible — even likely — that individual security guards could be implementing policies based on their own personal views. This, of course, is not a charge that such actions are taking place. But it’s certainly worth noting the possibility.

      Tried that and just like everything else what one generation tolerates the next is expected to embrace and one after that is expected to celebrate it.
      Not going to work in a society of free people like it did with those dumba55e5 in Europe or South America. No in free society it only take one public counter voice to the main stream media to buck the system. And thus halt the gay lifestyle to what it should be tolerated but not accepted or embraced.

      Can you stop being straight, SREGN? If you really believe all gay people make a decision to be so, you are out of your very small mind.

      This mall, like any private business, should be allowed to set whatever standards they like, and then reap the consequences -or rewards. Free market. If someone doesn’t like it, they can shop elsewhere. If enough people don’t like it, the business will change or cease to be. It is that simple.

      The problem with the entitlement mentality we’ve cultivated, is that people will start mobs and protests over this kind of thing instead of merely choosing to not do business with them, and just being politely vocal about their decision.

      As far as attire, it seems like most people these days, gay or straight, don’t know how to dress appropriately for being in public. I never cease to be amazed at mothers towing their 12 year old daughter around who has “Juicy” writ across her rump, or of all the girls with a muffin top wearing midriffs. Really classy, people, really classy.

      No.
      It’s like telling someone: “If you don’t want to be racially profiled, behave properly and make your brothers do the same. Then nobody will have any motive to profile you.”
      I dare recommend you to take a look at statistics of crime: in which racial groups is the crime rate higher?
      And statistics of terrorist acts – in which racial groups is the terrorist activity rate higher?
      And statistics of illegal immigration – in which ethnic groups is the illegal immigration rate higher?

      If you are honest and decent person, you would agree that profiling doesn’t occur for no particular reason…

      “what one generation tolerates, the next is expected to embrace and one after that is expected to celebrate it”. I have taken note of that. In so few words, it sums up actual truth. Don’t know if you originated it, but it is a profound statement.

      Lewd behavior of any kind should not have to be tolerated in and viewed in public places. It is displayed by heterosexuals and homosexuals alike. That means adults urinating/defecating in public, sexually groping each other, topless women, etc. Copulating in a public park is no different either.

      People use the scriptures admonishment to love our enemies and twist it to mean love with broad brush, and accept whatever they do as acceptable. We are to love the sinners soul, not their habits. Witness Jesus conversation with the woman at the well. He did not condemn her and did not excuse those who did condemn her for being immoral. But, when she departed, he stated to her “go and sin no more” .

There was a recent article that of all 50 states, Utah is experiencing the most dramatic increase of gay/lesbian citizenry. Not San Francisco, not Atlanta. Also, Utah has been very sympathetic to illegal aliens…..what an odd pair to draw to and I don’t think Mormons play cards.

      Bravo! I’ve been saying this for years. When I saw my first (and last, by choice) gay parade about 40 years ago I thought I would get sick to my stomach. It seems that most of the participants were actually exhibitionists…and that is what is offensive. I don’t care about anyones sexuality or sexual preferences but PLEASE have the decency and kindness to keep it to yourself.
      There is no need for the rest of us to have to witness your depravities.
      But, the nature of the movement is not to respect any one else’s sense of fairness….they seem to prefer to use a bullying tactic to embarass straight people into some kind of awareness, when who really cares. No one but the exhibitionist.

      To the guy defending tattoos, I hate to break it to you:

      “Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.”
      Lev. 19:28

      Now how about we all try to be a little more tolerant and mind our own business? I have my own prejudices, I’m not crazy about interracial dating, I don’t like people who wear body piercings, and I HATE seeing women in burkas. But unless someone is making a scene as in shouting, screaming, attacking people, I don’t give a crap.

      P.S. The military itself regulates tattoos:

      “The Army has revised its policy on tattoos in an effort to bolster recruitment of highly-qualified individuals who might otherwise have been excluded from joining.

      Tattoos are now permitted on the hands and back of the neck if they are not “extremist, indecent, sexist or racist.” Army Regulation 670-1, which was modified via a message released Jan. 25, also now specifies: “Any tattoo or brand anywhere on the head or face is prohibited except for permanent make-up.”

      For women, allowable make-up would be permanent eye-liner, eyebrows and makeup applied to fill in lips, officials said. They said permanent make-up should be conservative and complement the uniform and complexion in both style and color and will not be trendy.”

      By late fall you can take a 10 minute light rail trip from the airport and be at this mall. If you’ve got a two hour layover, or longer, downtown SLC will soon be within easy reach for the traveler. I’m glad the mall owners want to keep the place respectable (although I completely doubt the validity of this story). I‘m there at least once a week and I’d like for this to not turn into the homeless and teenage hangout. It should be a nice tourist attraction. That’s what the property owners built it for.

    You need to understand the history of this area. LOTS of people who hate the LDS church make it a point to come to this area around temple square and the church headquarters to demonstrate. They do everything they can to cause a scene and draw attention to themselves. For example, many gay couples have gone into temple square, which is privately owned LDS church property, and make a scene hugging and kissing, all because they know it will set off the security because that is not allowed on the church’s private property. The point is for them to make a scene and cause disruption, (and get on the nightly news). So, since we know the intentions of many gay people in SLC, is it any surprise that they would try to get attention in the new mall that they LDS church has a stake in? ANYTHING to get attention and make the church look bad. Welcome back to Jr High folks!

The owners of the mall want to maintain an appropriate decorum to make it a safe, happy place to be. That said, I really suspect the intentions of those making these claims.

      Gays were probably beginning to use it as a pickup spot like they commonly use parks and secluded parking lots.

      I think enforcing a dress code is a great idea. Otherwise the malls are filled with teenage boys walking around with their backsides hanging out of their pants.

      I agree KANKOKAGE
      Looks like the envelope is purposely being pushed on this one.
      the man wrote, “I was in heels and my makeup was fierce. And they kick me out for looking too gay.”
      “… my makeup was fierce”???
      Sounds like ‘fight’n words to me.

      Out gay people don’t have to go to parks and parking lots. The people who go to them may be gay but are I believe usually married men who are not out.

      I work in this mall and I’m calling these claims out as hogwash. If these people really were asked to leave, I have to believe they were making a scene. We have several obviously gay customers, and they are not harassed by security or anyone else. Then again, they are polite themselves, and don’t show up dressed in drag and looking for a fight. This sounds like just another attempt by anti-Mormon gay activists to stir the pot.

      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      That was my first thought when I read the headline. There is a certain element in Salt Lake City who take great enjoyment in tearing down all things LDS. I’d bet that if this mall property was not owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that these people wouldn’t show up looking “fierce” in the first place. It’s like the two gay men who decided to go onto the property between the administration buildings and Temple Square (formerly Main St.) and engage in a heavy makeout session a few years ago. LDS Security officers escorted them off of the private property and they screamed persecution. It wasn’t persecution, it was public morality. They’d have done the same thing if a heterosexual couple was going at it the same way.
      I don’t work in this mall, but I‘ve been there four or five times since it opened and I’ve never seen anything but respectful people, and I’ve never once been consciously aware of security. These accounts don’t fit in with my observations.
      If you have ever known gays, you might change your concept of their choice in the matter. My wife and I sat at a restaurant table near a couple…two men. One was obviously the “male” component, and the other guy was the “girl”……and did the “girl” ever bitch! There is simply no way that a man cound be that efeminate and girllike by choice. It was ingrained!
      I think the lot of you don’t get it…..I don’t, and I have a gay daughter. When I saw two guys kissing for the first time (I was in college) I nearly threw up in the street. And I gagged all the way to my dorm room, about 2 miles. Dry heaving all the way!
      If I owned a night club , white women would not be dragging black men up in it…but someone else would be FREE to occomadate that kind of behavior…night clubs should be allowed to discriminate on race , behavior , or whatever…hotels,resturants,gas stations should not be allowed to discriminate based on race or sexual preference , but should be able to have dress codes and behavior policies…Night Clubs fall under right to assembly
      Cross dressers and gay people are not the same thing. Telling people they can’t cross dress or go nude is not the same as barring gay people. Even banning public displays of affection by everyone is not the same as barring gay people.
      That said, a mall should be ale to ban gay people, or, since you don’t know who is gay, people engaging in public displays of homosexual affection. Of course, you may lose customers doing it. And gays should be able to ban heterosexuals and lesbians should be free to ban men from their bars, restaurants, b&bs etc.
      SHYLOW. Dress codes are one thing and many places have them, but the first part of your comment is exactly what I’m talking about and completely asinine. This is exactly the slippery slope I’m writing about and why the new libertarianism of Murray Rothbard, Lew Rockwell and Ron Paul should be kicked to the curb by Conservatives, or anyone with a clear thinking mind in general.
      BRUCE. Yes, the “invisible hand” of the free market place will take care everything and we can be free to discriminate and for whatever reasons we dictate right? I‘m all for keeping the riff raff out of one’s establishment, but many would take that just a bit too far and then what have we become as a society, and where does it end? Like I wrote… a slippery slope… back to pre Civil Rights of 1964 which Ron and Rand Paul would not have supported or voted in favor of.
      I agree with Shylow on a lot of things. Not this one. I just want our government to abide by the Constitution. I’ve also been checking out LewRockwell.com and haven’t seen anything that reflects these ideas either. Tom Woods refuted Levin’s claims about Rothbard and pretty much schooled Levin. Sorry, bud I’m just not seeing a problem.
      When you attack someones ideas, it‘s not enough to just say he’s wrong. You must logically argue why he’s wrong. It‘s also necessary to rationally explain your own ideas and how they’re superior to his. So, specifically, what are your arguments against libertarianism and Austrian Economics? And could you please list and defend the ideas that are better than these?
      In a nut shell, Ron Paul’s, Murray Rothbard’s, and Lew Rockwell’s ideology is that people should be absolutely free in their associations, exchanges, their ownership and control of private property. And that no one, including the govt, should be able to violate the individual unalienable rights of a person who isn’t violating the individual unalienable rights of anyone else. I, for instance, hold a whole host of conservative views on various social issues. But I’m against exercising any initiative force against anyone to force him to do or not do whatever I think he should do or not do. Freedom to experience negative consequences and to fail are burdens everyone can and should bear for his actions. If 2 people are going to engage in some kind of exchange, the rest of us, and the govt, should stay out of it. We, and the govt, should do nothing unless and until someone’s individual unalienable rights are violated. You don‘t defend yourself unless you’re attacked.
      There. Now, refute that. Better yet, refute, specifically, the ideas of the men you’re attacking.
