(The Blaze/AP)– A Utah man who won a $380,000 Lamborghini in a convenience store chain’s contest crashed the sports car six hours after he got it.Utah Man Wins $380K Lamborghini And Crashes It Hours Later

The lime green Murcielago Roadster was set to leave for a Las Vegas body shop Wednesday for repairs, just days after Santaquin resident David Dopp won it in Maverik stores’ “Joe Schmo to Lambo” contest.

“Yeah, I got it on Saturday and I wrecked it on Saturday,” Dopp told KSL-TV.

He said he was taking friends and family on joy rides that evening on the outskirts of town. He said he took a curve at 40 or 50 mph when the vehicle hit ice or loose gravel and started spinning.

The car crashed through some fence posts before coming to rest in a field.

Dopp wasn’t injured, but his wife said she was shocked.

“My heart pretty much fell out,” Annette Dopp told KSL. “They said they were OK. Then (came), you know, that feeling when your heart drops and you’re like, ‘Oh, my gosh. What do we do now?’”

The 640-horsepower Lamborghini has front-end damage, a punctured wheel and scratches along the passenger side. The vehicle is insured.

David Dopp was videotaped last month jumping up and down and hollering in speechless disbelief when contest officials announced during a college football game that he won the car.

The giveaway, which awarded participants for using a rewards card at Maverik stores, was co-sponsored by nonprofit organization “teamgive,” which raises awareness about rare neurological diseases.

David Dopp said it was strange seeing the flashy, exotic car in his humble driveway. He told ABC 4 in Salt Lake City that he plans to sell the vehicle to pay off bills and buy his wife another car — as soon as the Lamborghini’s drivable again.

“It’s going to be all nice and pretty here in a couple of months, I’m sure,” David Dopp said.

      Dumbo wins a car…yea! Should have immediately drove it home safely and counted his blessings, then put it up for sale because he could not afford the taxes on it nor the insurance. Maybe thats why he was careless with it because he felt deep down it did not really belong to him and he would have to sell it.

      Loving fast cars I for one would have called a flatbed, taken it to the closest Chevy dealer, traded it in for a ZR1 + Sierra 3500HD crew cab 4×4 and still have 200k to spare.

      PS ; the ZR1 at less than a third the price would smoke the Lambo every day and twice on Sunday

    What a fool. First he wins a $380 car, then he wrecks it. Someone with half a brain would have sold it without ever driving it just so he will have the money to pay the tax.       yeah. Should have kept the training wheels on. Goober really shouldnt have drove it at all. Should have had it delivered with a truck to buyer. Just Driving it off the lot probably cost him 50K in value. The wreck hit value +100K. (even after repairs)

      I absolutely agree with you! I would challenge anyone to NOT drive that car once it was in your driveway. He was smart to put insurance on it before driving it. Cars like that are beasts to handle until you get used to them. The guy makes a mistake and everybody is just blasting him. I really do wonder why. There really is alot of anger out there!

    Seems like the normal reaction to getting a car like that would be to baby it for a while, slowly learn how much power it has, ease into it. If you just punch on the gas like it is your econo box regular ride you are going to have problems. But even then, with all the computer controls managing traction and gearing it is pretty amazing he couldn’t manage a simple patch of ice.

      A REAL guy is never too old to go for a joy ride. Standing Still that Lambo makes a sports car owner just drool. I’ve been able to finance Porches since 1968, and they’ve all been terrific cars. That said, I would turn in my keys in a white hot second to be able to own and drive that expression of engineering excellence.

      Those who said it takes training to drive a piece of machinery like that know what they are talking about. I picked up my first Porsche at their plant in Zuffenhausen, FRG, back in the day of two Germany’s. They wouldn’t release the car to me until I had undergone and passed a three day training course.

      I’s love to take that Lambo out on the German autobahn – passing lights blinking continuously between Stuttgart and Munchen
