A middle school student has been suspended in Southampton, VA for disobeying a school policy meant to keep kids safe. So what did the boy do that warranted such discipline? He opened a door for someone:
From WTKR:
A local middle school student held open a door at school, reportedly because someone had their hands full. But after that, the student was suspended.
All schools in Southampton County have tight security at the front door, and students are told not to open the door for anyone. But Superintendent Charles Turner tells NewsChannel 3 that the rule was disobeyed when the student opened the door for the woman with her hands full.
The school system recently spent thousands of dollars upgrading door security at all of its schools. [...]
“We are very protective of our teenagers and it allows us to make sure that the people coming in to the door come into the office for help,” Principal Allene Atkinson says, “Parents have been overwhelmingly supportive of this system because our whole objective is to ensure that our children are safe.”

Posted on March 2, 2011 at 10:14amThese policies are designed and implemented ON PURPOSE with the intent on abusing the brains of the children.
This constant exercises in contradiction is DONE ON PURPOSE.
It is brain abuse. Laugh if you want but do you really want these people crawling up inside your child’s brain and messing with it as if they were dolls?

Now be a good citizen, go out into the field and tend the flocks or till the ground. We, the enlightened few, will take care of all the hard stuff, like thinking.

Posted on March 2, 2011 at 10:09amThese zero tolerance policies at the schools are a fine lesson in the unintended consequences that occur with increasing levels of regulation. Not to mention that there is, indeed, a total absence of common sense in public schools today.
Then again, look at the political proclivities of the primarily socialist administration and staff at these places. It’s no wonder that there are so many absolutely idiotic things happening at schools across the US. And, it’s not limited to liberal districts in blue states either. That’s the scary part.

Posted on March 2, 2011 at 2:48pmIt makes no sense, @CNSRBTVJ. This security system is a joke. It’s begging to be used as gate to keep police out during a crisis. Let me explain, if a student brings a weapon into the school with the intent to kill other students and teachers, bypassing whatever other security methods they have to prevent that, this security system ensures their success. All they have to do is make sure their first target is the administrator manning the door system. They can then easily destroy the switch, from what I can see, effectively locking out police who may be trying to enter to stop the killing. In fact, the room where that switch is kept is likely a great secure spot that can then be used by the crazed student to murder anyone who approaches trying to stop it.
Paranoia does not breed safety, it breeds discontent.

The policy is in place for security of the school (not letting in people who aren’t allowed to be there) and not the eradication of chivalry. My feeling about that is not mixed. The only thing I disagree with is the suspension. Maybe pull him out of one of his extracurricular classes for a while, explain the purpose of the policy and what could have gone wrong, and have him write a short essay about it. Even that seems like a bit much, but it ought to be enough to appease both sides. Better than suspension, at least.
