VA Man Arrested in DC Metro Terror Plot

A Virginia man has been arrested for conspiring with al-Qaeda to stage terror attacks mainly targeting Washington, D.C. metro stations.
Farooque Ahmed, 34, of Ashburn, VA, was arrested today by the FBI and charged with providing material support to terrorists and collecting information for a terrorist attack, Fox News reports.
An indictment has officially been filed in the U.S. Court for the Eastern District of Virginia detailing activity between April 2010 and Oct. 25.
That indictment says Ahmed met several times with people he thought were al-Qaeda officials to plan the attacks. He even completed multiple surveillance missions given to him by what ended up being under cover terrorism agents.
During one of those meetings at a Virginia hotel in September, he suggested using rolling suitcases instead of backpacks to stage the attacks, and said he wanted to kill as many military personnel as possible.
Ahmed will make his first court appearance Wednesday afternoon in Alexandria, VA.
The arrest comes on the heels of Rep. Betty McCollum’s (D-MN) claim last week that al-Qaeda is no longer a threat in the U.S.
UPDATE:
MSNBC has a detailed timeline of Ahmed’s meetings, which started on April 18, 2010. The article also notes that Ahmed, a Pakistani-born U.S. citizen, sketched out DC metro stations and suggested where bombs should be placed.
He completed his initial court appearance Wednesday and could appear again on Friday.

Posted on October 27, 2010 at 5:14pmInterestingly, I emailed this email to me@glennbeck.com last Tuesday, October 19: “I work in D.C. . . . we are urged to report “any and all suspicious” activity. This morning as I was walking from the parking garage to my building on the sidewalk that goes over the . . . train, I saw a young person in a hooded sweatshirt and a large, extremely packed backpack, taking video of the . . . train and train tracks. Mind you, it was 6:30 a.m. and pitch dark outside.
So, I looked on the DHS website for info on how and to whom to report this and it referred me to the FBI website. I called the FBI, who told me I needed to call the D.C. Metro police. I haven’t done that yet, but I’m not feeling real safe and secure working here.”
Follow up: fast forward to Wednesday, the 20th. Feeling DHS and FBI had dropped the ball (and given me the run-around), I finally get through to Federal Protective Services, who came out and took my statement. Did DHS and FBI already know what was going down? Maybe. Here’s my point: our intelligence agencies don’t seem to be working together to protect us. None of them knew exactly which agency had jurisdiction. The Metro Police?? Seriously?
Fast even more forward to today, one week later. Man arrested for filming the trains.

This threat, will no doubt just lead to more infringement of our rights. Next, if anyone has carry on luggage, they will have to have it hand searched too. Perhaps the remedy will be to have more naked body scanners. If we had these everywhere prior to entering a building, or using public transportation, we’d feel real safe. Or maybe they should just close down all public transportation systems, that ALLOW americans to go where they want. I see patterns of various things happening, and I do not believe in coincidences.
