VA School District Defends Shocking Occupy-Themed Song Performed by Third-Graders: ‘I’m So Happy to Be Part of the 99%’

The ever-vigilant crew at WeaselZippers has uncovered a jaw-dropping incident at Woodbrook Elementary School in Virginia in which third-grade students performed (and school officials claim wrote) a song titled, “Part of the 99” as part of a “Kid Pan Alley” performance in October.

But despite the backlash, Albermale County school district is standing behind the song, claiming the children chose and wrote the lyrics themselves.

The lyrics, which mirror the very same sentiments and slogans espoused by the Occupy movement, have critics up in arms. The highly politicized song, which many believe is intended to indoctrinate children, follows below:

Some people have it all
But they still don’t think they have enough
They want more money
A faster ride
They’re not content
Never satisfied
Yes — they’re the 1 percent

I used to be one of the 1 percent
I worked all the time
Never saw my family
Couldn’t make life rhyme
Then the bubble burst
It really, really hurt
I lost my money
Lost my pride
Lost my home
Now I’m part of the 99

Some people have it all
But they still don’t think they have enough
They want more money
A faster ride
They’re not content
Never satisfied
Yes — they’re the 1 percent

I used to be sad, now I’m satisfied
’Cause I really have enough
Though I lost my yacht and plane
Didn’t need that extra stuff
Could have been much worse
You don’t need to be first
’Cause I’ve got my friends
Here by my side
Don’t need it all
I’m so happy to be part of the 99

Local CBS 19 reports:

Conservative blogs are buzzing, discussing what they call “an indoctrinating sing-along” with an Occupy Message. In one blog, Weasel Zippers, writes “to have third graders sing about class warfare and rail against the one percent is evil and a violation of the trust parents put in them [schools].”

“Just as I wouldn’t promote a Tea Party song in a third grade class, I think the same is true for any song of political ideology.” says Jefferson Area Tea Party Chair, Carole Thorpe.

Kid Pan Alley is an organization that helps kids write and perform their own songs. Their mission is to inspire kids to be creators.

Students write the songs and school officials are standing by the lyrics.

“They don’t censor what the kids write. They don’t shape what the kids write. It all comes out of the kids own mouths and the kids own words,” claims Albemarle County School Board Chair, Steve Koleszar.

But many question whether third-graders have the faculties or political knowledge to write such lyrics and even if they do, assert that a song like “99” has no place in schools, period.

“Does this also include religious content of lyrics? Would it include profanity? Does the school at any point say this content is inappropriate for an eight-year-old?,” presses Thorpe.

Kid Pan Alley leaders have addressed the song, saying “we have taken swift action to clarify our guidelines for lyrical content.”

School officials are standing by the Kid Pan Alley program and also the lyrics.

“The kids choose the topic, this class chose the topic and those are their words” asserts Koleszar.

Let me see if I got this straight,

We have failing schools, with kids that can’t do math, kids who aren’t learning history, kids that can scarcely read, science is another foreign language that they cannot understand, kids who can’t run 100 yds without taking a break and these “educators” have time to have them writing lyrics to Socialist ideology…?

Let’s give the kids an education in income redistrabution only using their grades. on the next test all the smart kids who score high will have their grades cut in half, and the diff will be given to the kids with failed grades.
This will be a great lesson on income redistrabution and how everyone gets the same grades.

When the smart kids get pissed off because their “A” are now turned into “C” like everyone else then I think they will get the point.

I guess that why I sent my two kids to private schools and one who is 23 is a manager at fortune 10 company (yep she was laid off from her first job and then landed this one all in 2011) and the other one is in law school. For those who say that the lyrics are not political, please explain how even mentioning the one and ninet-nine percent is NOT political. Like 5? Not old enough to remember. But I am sure they thought those lyrics up all on their own *eye roll* this is our last semester in public schools–only one of my kids is school aged but when we move this year we are homeschooling. You don‘t need this costant battle for children’s education. To get the most from school you have to teach your kids to respect their authority figures; but then they do this. How can you respect this? How do you explain this type of situation to a 3rd grader?

I hate to tell you the army has been trained, they’re the teachers forcing this crap down the throats of the children. Parents need to stand up and take charge. Run for school board positions and get rid of the Socialist/Marxist educators…!

Northern Virginia…it’s more a part of New England than South these days. There isn’t much that part of the state does that surprises me. They even have themselves a terrorist training camp up in Red House, VA. Google it and see for yourself.

That’s what you get for not having protected boarders, immigration control and visas between the states.
All the left wing loons migrated south to get away from high taxes in NY and Ma, just like the Californians migrated north to Oregon and Washington. Every where this tax induced migration happens the nut cases move into uninfected populations and ruin the state.

Yes, NOVA is basically lower MD now. Double entendre, maybe. The hot pocket of liberalism surrounding the area of Charlottesville and UVA is it’s own lil slice of NOVA… We have illegals drunk driving killing people, saudi schools teaching all kinds of wahabi fun stuff, and the libs never stop either. At some point we have to put the illegals and libs in the same geographic area-with the wahabis, and either rope it off or just wall it up. I would be kind enough to leave twister games and kanola oil for them, but little else. I would vote for Maryland since most of the thugs booted from DC are already there. When can we hire actual teachers for our schools and not these agenda driven slackers that cannot teach or think without dues involved? When is enough, quite actually enough?

Actually, this isn’t in Northern Virginia. It’s in Charlottesville, VA (within 50 miles of where I live). I will say, the way the people act, how the town is laid out, etc.. it reminds me very much of a miniture Washington DC. There’s a suburb just to the north of Charlottesville in the town of Keswick where several rich folks have homes along with horse farms in the county of Albemarle. Sissy Spacek, Howie Long, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, writer John Grisham, etc.. I don’t know the political leanings of these folks, but GENERALLY the rich and famous are Liberal left leaning or have to act that way to continue getting roles or jobs in their line of work. This is getting a little too close to home for me. I keep an eye on my kids homework assignments and so far I’ve only seen one assignment that was indoctination. It talked about social justice involving an immigrant farmer that unionized the fruit & vegetable pickers in California I believe in the 1920′s. The only way these kids came up with the lyrics was if their parents are coaching them from home. This is all just a big game for them. What‘s sad is that these folks are creating an environment that will cause their own demise and they’re too stupid to see it. If/when the Occupy crowds can create in small town America the chaos they did in big cities this past summer, the environment will be ripe for the Liberals to get the top down/bottom up situation they want.

That does no good if these clowns keep teaching their indoctrination to the masses. We need to take back the school boards and purge these socialist ideals out of the system.

I see the indoctrination and zombification of the kiddos by our Communist leaders is proceeding as scheduled. They have to make sure the next generation of lazy, selfish hippie radicals are ready to go once we are all officially members of the NWO. As the theory goes, lazy, ignorant sheeple are much easier for their masters to control. It’s time to wrest control of our kids futures from the Federal Government, and send the responsibility back to the local level where it belongs. I‘m sure most parents would agree that they would like to make the decisions regarding what is pumped into their child’s head, rather than some faceless Progressive traitor in Washington D.C..

Well, most of these kids are more potty trained than the OWSers. In fact I would bet these kids can actually spell Miscreants. But the cool thing about this, these kids live with their parents too, and don’t have to live in the basement.

HOME SCHOOL! When I went to school we were told we could be anything we wanted … maybe it didn’t work out that way for all .. but at least we were pushed UP not down. I would pull my child out of that school so fast they would not know what hit them. SICK!

LOL … good luck with that .. I tried to get them to start educating and stop indoctrinating in the 80‘s to 90’s pulled my son out of public school before high school. If the parents pulled the kids out and they lose state aid .. that will get their attention. They actually called to ask why he wasn’t in school after I told them he was leaving and even took him out for tour of the new school .. they didn‘t care until he REALLY wasn’t there on “count day”.
