Valerie Jarrett Attacks GOP in Speech From MLK’s Church Pulpit

Valerie Jarrett Slams Republicans, Praises Obama at Ebenezer Baptist Church

One day before Martin Luther King Day, Senior White House adviser Valerie Jarrett spoke at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia.

Her appearance was notable for a number of reasons. To begin with, King was a preacher at the church, so the timing of the address, during which she praised the civil rights leader for paving the way for Obama’s historic presidency, was appropriate.

But of additional interest was Jarrett’s politically-charged speech, which, according to the Weekly Standard, she delivered to the church’s congregants just before the house of worship hosted a voter registration drive. Rather than dancing around the political nature of her position to deliver a sermon or a message rooted purely in Biblical nature, she took the opportunity to lambaste Republicans.

“Teachers, and firefighters, and policemen, whose jobs are now in jeopardy because Congress — well let me be specific — because the Republicans in Congress,” she said.

The crowd was laughing and applauding before she could even finish her statement. Additionally, she went on to discuss Osama bin Laden and the end to the Iraq war.

“We all sleep a little better at night knowing Osama Bin Laden and his lieutenants are not plotting a terrorist attack against the United States,” she said.

Additionally, the church’s pastor, Raphael Warnock, lambasted Republican Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich during his sermon. Warnock took particular issue with comments that the presidential contender made about food stamps and the African American community.

“He is playing an old game that’s part of the southern strategy…I think he’s relying on old logic of scapegoating and race baiting,” he said.

The church hosted a voter registration drive after the service and it is pledging to continue to do so until the November election.

For those of you wondering if churches, being non-profit organizations, are allowed to utter this sort of political rhetoric, you may remember our coverage of Pulpit Freedom Sunday and the “Johnson Amendment.” This latter law restricts partisan political activity by non-profit groups.

In order to qualify as a 501(c)3 group, a church must be one, “which does not participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distributing of statements), any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office.”

The waters are murky in this case, though many have argued that the law shouldn’t exist at all (this, in fact, is the premise behind Pulpit Freedom Sunday).

Sadly, I had to put up with this kind of nonsense for nearly three years from a “temporary” pastor (strung along constantly with the imminent promise of a permanent pastor), only very slightly more subtly at times. (Worst incident: literally bringing up the Sotamayor nomination during the sermon and implying all opposition was racial.) I’m really only now coming to grips with the damage that did to my faith.

  At my church we give what we can…I haven’t heard of that before, requiring a certain amount in order to be a member. My church is Catholic, maybe it’s different for different religions. I wonder if my priest can now get up and really hammer away at how forced redistribution of wealth is evil now that we see Obama’s friends getting political from the pulpit.

  Sad that the memory of MLK had deteriorated to this. Blacks at the time of the civil rights movement were lacking in opportuinities to better their lives on their own. I think that the playing field has been leveled for the most part and in most places. The black communities problem now is breaking the welfare bondage that they have been placed under by our federal government. Every child in this country goes to school, they are taught basically along the same curriculum so they should all be college ready when they graduate high school IF they choose to dedicate themselves to the school work, the problem there is that parents as a whole expect the school district to make sure that their kids are educated properly, sorry parents that is your job. If you choose not to participate in your childs education and they end up on welfare roles or in a gutter you have no one but yourself to blame for the failure.

  Obviously, no one commenting on the separation of church and state, (as outlined in the Constitution’s Establishment Clause), has a clue of what they are talking about.
  Either that or they are just pointing out the hypocrisy of the progressives from their misrepresentation of the Establihment Clause, using sarcasm. The only thing Jarrett did not violate here was, the Establishment Clause. But the truth suffered quite a bit!

The inflated pensions of public workers can no longer be supported because the jobs that ceated the taxes to pay for them are gone. now it’s a race thing and the federal government should just continue to throw good money after bad. What happens in a real company when revenue starts to dry up? you streamline your operation. Can someone please tell barack this.
As soon as you threaten funding for baracks cronie’s organizations, you get the race card thrown at you. This day (MLK day) is use for nothing but political posturing by those who have their hand out looking for the next freebee.

Nice to see the Obama family have now turned MLK day into a political day with Jarrett speaking no doubt at Obama’s behest! Shame of the dummycrat for showing how low they will stoop to push their agenda! So typical!
