Van Jones, Coulter and Huckabee Clash on ‘This Week’ Over Adding Jobs to the Public Sector

President Barack Obama may have given further fuel to the fire for those campaigning to unseat him in 2012. During a press event at the White House Friday morning, the president told a room full of journalists that “the private sector is doing fine.”

This comes following 40 straight weeks of the unemployment rate over 8 percent.

On ABC’s “This Week” With George Stephanopoulos Sunday, discussion on the gaffe and a rough week for the president served as a starting point for a lively debate featuring Ann Coulter and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, coming at odds against Van Jones and former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell. Originally discussing how the insensitive comment may be used politically, Coulter shifted the conversation towards the public sector, and the president’s plans to look to growing the public sector as a means to get people back to work and the economy back on track.

When asked earlier on the program about the “fine” remark, the president’s Senior Campaign Advisor David Axelrod said “the American people are smarter than that,” and understood the context of the president’s remarks on our economy as “the storm clouds that are rolling in from Europe and elsewhere.” Axelrod went on to say that one of President Obama’s steps to promote job creation is adding jobs in the public sector:

And put the teachers and firefighters and police who have lost their jobs over the last — we have had 4.3 million private sector jobs created over the last 27 months, but we lost almost half a million public sector jobs, and most of them are teachers. Many of them are firefighters and police. And his argument was that we ought to move on this, Congress ought to move on this.

During the panel later on in the show, Coulter said that Axelrod and the Obama campaign must be oblivious to recent political events like the Walker win in Wisconsin to even think that public sector job growth is the solution that the American people want.

“Did they not notice what just happened in Wisconsin? The country is enraged at public sector workers, and he’s talking about how he need to buck up public school teachers,” exhaled Coulter.

Gov. Rendell reacted to the comments by pointing to tax cuts for small businesses that hire, which are also a part of the president’s plan. The former governor went on to accuse Republicans of criticizing these policies not because they believe the plan is inefficient, but only because they want to beat President Obama in November.

As the discussion began to evolve into a shouting match involving all four panelists, Stephanopoulos silenced the crowd and questioned Gov. Huckabee directly; “What is wrong with the jobs for teachers, firemen and policemen.”

“There is nothing wrong with it, my did was a fireman, I love firemen jobs,” replied Gov. Huckabee. “But here’s what you need, you need enough firemen to put out the fires. You don’t go arbitrarily hire firemen, policemen or teachers, unless you have more kids in school. And what we need to be talking about is, we need not to be hiring more teachers, but hiring better teachers and getting rid of the ones that don’t teach.

“When 50 percent of the kids in Chicago, where Obama’s campaign headquarters is located, aren’t even graduating,” added Gov. Huckabee,”we need to be talking about improving education and not just increasing the number of public employees, who in Chicago get $100,000 a year in salary and benefits.”

Don’t give up, no matter difficult it seems, don’t quit looking for a job.

Try to hit the streets at least once a week and look help wanted signs at businesses. Also watch the internet. Some companies use only their web-sites, to say if their hiring or not.

Shouldn’t the fact that Van Jones is a Communist be automatically brought up before ever debating with him. That would be the first thing I would get out there so that we can know where his ideas are rooted in. Communist are evil and want to set up big oppressive governments and they know people don’t like it and that is why they always like weasels try to hide who they are.

This is about to make my head explode! I am a cutting edge industry trainer. My company helps people lower interest rates on there existing credit card debt so they can get out of debt. Office environment air-conditioned in central Florida. Half of people who apply never show up for training. Half who show up for training never make it for through two week paid training period. Most that are hired do not want a job were they are held accountable for doing that job. They just want a paycheck at the end of each week. Those who study the material and are able to learn a new thing make a better then average income for my area around 36000.00 a year. The ones who make it are the people who are willing to get down to business and do the work. About 25% of the applying work force. I can teach anyone to do the job and most give up before they even try. I have forty entry level positions right now.

Illegal workers have a whopping 7+ million jobs but Obama refuses to tell them to leave so they open to unemployed legal immigrants and citizens! If they “knew” they would be detained, charged and deported anyway, most would leave on their own to avoid the 3-10 ban that comes with illegal re-entry or overstaying their visa more than 6 months! It is as simple as serious enforcement but Obama and the majority of Democrats are still protecting illegals at the expense of unemployed legal immigrants and citizens and the rest of us because he admitted that we pay their healthcare! Both are reasons illegals must go but they still protect them instead of us!!

Two excellent points were made by Ann that liberals fail to even discuss. Is there a demand for more firemen, teachers and policemen and do you realize that tax dollars pay there salaries as they don’t produce anything but rather a service that is purely paid for by tax dollars. When liberals actually open up the ledger of the checkbook and realize why they give it to you to write down your expenses for the purpose of balancing, then we can have an apples to apples discussion about needs in relation to cost and not just needs in relation to ideology. Usually the answer is raise taxes which brings a whole other issue is that businesses produce less when they pay out more…..simple economics for the purpose of creating wealth and jobs. Liberals are the stupidest amongst us and they keep proving us right every damn day!

I own a business and every owner I know is looking. Not posting ads because then you get 500 or 600 resumes that don’t even match the skill set listed.

Nothing but rhetoric. This is why I don’t consume main stream media. The issues they discussed are much more complicated than the mind numbing rhetoric from everyone at the table. Quite frankly main stream news insults me. Lowest common denominator news hopefully is going the way of the dinosaurs. Sad to say Van Jones had the most compelling rhetoric. He’s wrong but very, very skilled at the rhetoric game. Coulter is usually better and Huckabee is a patronizing boob. Rendell is just another party hack. If the wind blew in the direction of Republicans he would be Mr. Republican.
Bottom line, I learned nothing new and the “debate” was not moved forward. I know it’s ABC and this is about par for them but It just irritates me to hear important issues butchered beyond recognition. I do thoroughly enjoy the Real News on GBTV. They really get to the meat of issues because they don’t believe in the lowest common denominator style news cast. They don’t dumb it down. Glenn was probably right when he said main stream media is going extinct.

And if I hear the statement Romney made about liking to fire people taken out of context one more time, I’m going to scream. They have to look for something wrong, and when they can’t find it they twist something to make it wrong. If you listen to that whole statement, he was talking about a private citizen having the ability to “fire” someone who is not doing a good job. It’s the union mentality: if you can get a foot in the door, you’re in for life. I think that‘s Obama’s thinking, and he likes the job and doesn’t want to leave.

I get SO TIRED of hearing about “failing schools” and “bad teachers”. Yes, there are some bad teachers/failing schools. BUT, the biggest reason many students fail is because they have no structure at home, their parents don’t care…probably don’t even know IF their kids are going to school. A kid will fail every time NO MATTER HOW GOOD THE TEACHER IS, if their parents aren’t involved!

You have an excellent point, but the Governor’s point is also spot-on. There are plenty of miserable teachers, and plenty who simply teach what they’re handed from leftist bosses.

I don’t have much sympathy for a lot of teachers. We don’t live in a bad area, by any stretch, but most of the kids at the fourth grade level (my son’s grade) are barely functional in terms of reading and basic math. That’s not the fault of mom and dad who are both too busy working to spend a lot of time checking up on the teacher.

It’s the result of crap teachers using crap methods.

My buddy at work has a wife who’s a teacher. She taught at the 3rd grade level of 3 years, and then complained about how badly underpaid she was. At the time, she was making $54,000 a year.

Combine her salary with her husband’s, and their family makes considerably more than mine, and they have one less child than we do. Her attitude, and that of many other teachers, is out of synch with reality.

I agree, parents are key to a child’s educational success; however, the reality is we have created a society that makes it difficult for a parent to be involved and respected. Our economy drives both parents into the workforce, our schools discourage involvement, our media constantly undermines the parental role and the public sector lifts teachers to a level of higher respect than the child’s parent. The truth of the matter is the problem is bigger than the parent or the school teacher. Each have a role, but we must address all the related societal issues.

Go try battling Taliban in Afghanistan for 30K or less, and you’ll understand. I retired from the AF after twenty years and multiple wars, and my pension is 18K not 100K. The teachers unions and many teachers need to quit reading the left’s press clippings and get to work. Never did I even consider that 50% of kids wouldn’t graduate high school. And, I‘m tired of hearing how it’s all the parents fault. Teachers get paid to teach. The only other job in America that can have a 50% success rate and want more money is weather person!

that was part of the law that Walker passed her in Wisconsin that really riled the union. by flipping the script on them by taking back the 80% control that the union held, he is able now to weed out the bad teachers while rewarding(merit pay) the good teachers. that’s why they were having a fit. that meant they actually had to work to recieve a raise.
i can use myself as an example. i am far from dumb. i had some fantastic teachers, and i had some teachers who just didn’t give a crap. the good ones were able to peak my interest and curiosity in their classes i pulled straight As, then the other side i had several teachers(my math teacher was the worst he’d write out all the problems out on the chalk board, then sit at his desk reading magazines i pulled an A in his class too but only because it was a basic math course). the teachers who came in with the attitude of not giving a crap, basically rubbed off on my attitude and i got mostly D’s in their classes.
nowadays we have too many teachers like the latter, rather then the former. those we have got to get rid of and get in those who actually TEACH what a concept. the parents 9 times out of 10 are not involved because when they went to school they were taught by the same worthless teachers. it isn’t any surprise that private schools have better teachers, better grades, and better prepared students, while recieving half the pay. that‘s what’s wrong with the schools today run by the far left that don’t teah they bra

The problems are just teachers,it’s the whole educational enviroment and the role government has taken in undermining parental authority. The problem is government and creating more government workers isn’t going to help it. Fact is it only serves to worsen the problem on mopre levels creating more burden on the already over burdened tax payers. The entire federal employment system needs to be scrapped let the unions strike or whatever. Scrap the system and then rebuild only the necessary agencies. The department of Education is one that could be removed permanently as there is nop need for it. Schools systems such be handled by local governments as they are were suppose to be in the first place. No where in the constitution is the federal government given power to over the education of our children. As a matter of fact the Constitution is suppose to protect the children from the Government.

It’s not just the teachers who are to blame, ask the school boards, too:

I live in a very small town in the NE with it’s own elementary school; if the school gets 20 new students they simply MUST have $200,000 added to the budget or the world will come to an end. If enrollment drops by 20 students the next year there is absolutely no place to cut a penny from the budget. The school board and teachers attempt to rationalize this by first re-defining “ideal class size”, it’s gone from 30 to 25 to 20, etc and now they claim any more than 15 students in a class is unmanageable and creates an environment where “children simply can’t learn”. I figure they’ll be down to 10 in another year or so.

When asked again to explain the one-way-only budgets they hem and haw about staff cuts and how damaging that would be to the school when in fact they’re willing to fire the custodian if it means they can keep a new teacher they all really, really like on the payroll.

As yet another spin on an answer they explain the high cost of special ed and the state requirements for a one-on-one attendant for each student. That expense never seems to go down when the number of kids requiring that attention drops.

When all else fails they drag out the universal excuse: it‘s for the children and if you oppose it you’re just mean. This chorus is performed most loudly by the residents with the most children and least visible means of support other than welfare, food stamps and misc

One mistake is giving Vann Jones a voice in the matter when he was fired from his job…or was he? Must people with commonsense like Huckabee and Ann handle themselves well and speak for most of America so it is time to open our ears and get our minds together so we can change our direction before it is too late. Their suggestions play right into Beck’s 4 step plan which is not that hard to follow. All we need to do is be wise, brave and do what needs to be done. If people want help they need to accept what it will take to help them or suffer the consequences.

We have too many cops, unless you want to transfer about 100,000 to Chicago and Detroit! Why is it that we have all these modern crime fighting techniques but we constantly need more cops? If they would quit writing grandma tickets and get busy catching criminals crime would go down. Oh wait. They can‘t because they’re afraid of profiling! Huckabee made several good points.

Public sector employees should never make significantly more than the communities they work in. If the median income in your area is $40,000 then it becomes unsustainable to have significant numbers of police, fire and teachers making $80,000 a year, then adding more every year just to keep the unions happy.

“Doesn’t anyone realize that the only way out of our financial mess is SERIOUS austerity measures now, before it’s too late?”

Don’t you realize that absolute debt is less relevant than debt-to-GDP ratios? Whether you like it or not, a sizeable chunk of the economy is dependent on various government investments and expenditures, and large cuts would devastate the economy. Many of the cuts we’ve already seen in the US – like those axing various teachers, firefighters, cops, etc. – have already hurt economic growth through increasing unemployment by hurting the public sector.

Serious harm to employment levels and economic growth means a serious fall in tax revenues, which means the debt and deficit will get worse, not better. The Republican answer, however, is always to continue the cuts. It‘s this sort of maligned logic that’s beginning to have such serious effects in Europe.

Once again Vox you have demonstrated a very shallow understanding of the impact that public sector spending has on the economy. The government has no money that it doesn’t take from the private sector employee who earned it. For every public sector job, there could’ve been as many as 2-3 private sector jobs created for the same money. This is especially true when you consider the outrageous pay and benefits many of the unionized public sector employees are receiving. Consider the $200K that a garbage truck driver in Milwaukee earned last year, or the six figure incomes of life guards (yes the folks in the bright red swim suits sitting on the big chairs on the beach) in some southern California cities. All of these public sector union employees have cadillac health care insurance plans and gold plated pensions all of which costs them nothing, but costs taxpayers a fortune. Just imagine how many self supporting (that’s the difference between private sector and public sector jobs. Private sector employees have to actually produce more than they cost to remain employed.) private sector jobs that kind of money would’ve produced. Do you really believe that lifeguards receiving $50,000 a year would be any less capable than one’s (and yes some are) receiving over $200,000? Shouldn’t public sector employees have to pay into their retirement accounts too? Public sector employees used to receive great benefits and pensions to offset their lousy pay. Now they want great pay AND be

It is not the feds job to pump in money for police, firefighters, and teachers. We think we need more police because , 1. to many laws (police are too busy catching illegal smokers, etc) 2. trying to enforce too many federal laws, teachers can easily teach 35 to 40 students if discipline was back in the classroom, firefighters get too much time off so they think more is needed. Most firemen I know have side businesses in which they make more or as much money as they do as the city pays them.

It’s not austerity. That is so laughable.

Let’s see, we can stop buying people free cell phones, free broadband and their own apartment.

We increased teachers to 1 teacher to 16 kids when we had money. Is cutting to 1 teacher to 20 kids now austerity? I had 1 teacher to 50 kids growing up in a private school – first grade.

Is it austerity to ask teachers to teach all day? Is it austerity to ask them to pay part of their own healthcare? Is it austerity to fire bad teachers?

Is it austerity for the US to mothball one of the 16 carrier groups of the navy, close bases in the EU or cut back on the number of solar research satellite projects fully paid for by the taxpayer when we have 16% real unemployed.

“But we have to waste money or we will layoff those people and make it worse!”.
No, the reason that cutting back on wasteful public make-work projects helps is that those people will be force into jobs that actually produce a product and producing products increase productivity. Increase productivity increases exports and raise the standard of living.

Make work jobs spend taxpayer money, produce nothing, lower our exports, lower productivity, lower standard of living and hurt the economy.

I know a number of teachers and that’s a BS argument. Since when does holding teachers to a standard for achieving a level of acceptable performance result in them not being able to teach? That’s like saying that requiring a mechanic to actually fix a car is keeping him from being a mechanic. Or how about requiring a fireman to put out a fire is keeping him from firefighting? It‘s an idiotic argument that doesn’t hold water. The teachers were so against no child left behind because it actually required them to work and punished school districts that allowed them to get away without actually doing so. When I was in school, we had homework that had to be done, and material that had to be learned or you got a big fat “F” on your report card and with enough “F”, you had to take the entire year over. Nowadays they complain that that‘s bad for the kid’s self esteem. Sorry but the prisons are full of illiterate young adults with high self esteem and no work ethic. Perhaps pushing them to actually work and learn when they were 8 and preventing them from developing a false sense of worth might have prevented them from ending up in jail.
