Van Jones‘ Organization Cuts Ad Blaming Conservative Group For Trayvon Martin’s Death

When it comes to political attacks, there are cheap shots, and then there are cheap shots. But the attack in this story defies both categories. In fact, it doesn’t even deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as cheapness, or shooting.

The Washington Times reports that Van Jones’ organization, Color of Change, has cut an ad designed to target corporate sponsors of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a conservative organization that has been in the crosshairs of progressives for quite some time because of its aggressive and successful strategy of pushing model free market legislation. The goal of the ads is to publicly shame corporations into withdrawing their support from ALEC.

Typical progressive tactics, you might think, but in this case, they go far further. You see, one particular ad that Color of Change ran against Johnson and Johnson stoops to a level so unbelievably low that it has to be heard to be believed. Listen here. The transcript follows, courtesy of the Times:

Woman:You know Johnson & Johnson?

Man: Uh..yeah. Why?

Woman: They’re funding an organization called ALEC…the American Legislative Exchange Council? It’s attacking the rights of black folks, latinos, and workers in states across the country. It spread the shoot first law that protected Trayvon Martin’s killer and laws that suppress the black vote.

Man: And Johnson & Johnson gives money to that?

Woman: Yeah.

Man: Wow.

Woman: Yeah.

Announcer: Tell Johnson & Johnson to stop funding ALEC.

Yes, that’s right. According to Van Jones’ organization, ALEC is indirectly responsible for the death of Trayvon Martin because it supports “Stand Your Ground” laws, and supports “voter suppression” because it supports Voter ID laws. Never mind that in the case of Martin, it’s not even clear that Zimmerman was protected under the Stand Your Ground Law because the case hasn’t been resolved yet, and nor is it clear that Zimmerman is a cold-blooded murderer the way the ad implies. More to the point, according to this logic, every liberal lawmaker who has ever drafted a self-defense law is indirectly responsible for every murder that was ever perpetrated by someone who claimed protection under such a law, however disingenuously. This is, quite simply, morally and logically bankrupt.

And Color of Change is proud of these tactics. Consider these paragraphs from their press release on the ads:

“With these ads, we are spreading the news about Johnson & Johnson’s ties to ALEC even more aggressively,” said ColorOfChange Executive Director Rashad Robinson. “Our goal is to help consumers understand that Johnson & Johnson helps fund a secretive and undemocratic organization that has passed laws that restrict access to the polls for Black folks, Latinos, low-income voters and other marginalized groups. The stakes are too high, and Americans deserve to know when their spending habits promote polices that are at odds with their values.”

The ads will air this week on radio stations targeting African Americans in Chicago, DC and New Brunswick, NJ, where Johnson & Johnson headquarters are located. The ads will also air in Sanford, FL, where 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was killed in February. The unarmed teenager’s killer, George Zimmerman, evaded arrest for more than a month as his defenders pointed to Florida’s “stand your ground” as justification for his actions. The NRA and ALEC exported this law to more than 20 states across the country, jeopardizing the safety of Americans nationwide.

ColorOfChange began contacting Johnson & Johnson in November of last year in an effort to educate the company about ALEC’s role in voter suppression. The ColorOfChange community and members of allied organizations began calling the company’s leadership in April to amplify the demand to drop ALEC. Johnson & Johnson has refused to do so, even as competitor Procter & Gamble announced in April that it would end its membership in the right-wing policy group.

Since ColorOfChange launched its campaign, 18 companies have announced that they will end their memberships. These companies include Wal-Mart, Amazon, Procter & Gamble, Yum! Brands, McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Mars Inc., Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Kraft Foods, Intuit, Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, Reed Elsevier (owner of LexisNexis and publisher of science and health information), Kaplan, Scantron, Medtronic, American Traffic Solutions and Arizona Public Service.

Vile, even for Van Jones. Still, at least the ads are getting the attention they deserve now, and perhaps now that they are subject to scrutiny, this over-the-top, entirely unwarranted attack will backfire. To any rational person, it should be self-discrediting.

    Okay, this is a little bit off subject but not that much. I was wondering when BO was going to call a press conference and declare that all the black flash mob people where acting stupidly and invite them to the White House for a beer? Do you think it will ever happen? No, it will never happen.

    BO can’t call down his people, even if the rest of America is suffering because of these black flash mob attacks. Blacks stick together, right or wrong. BO thinks the only people who act stupidly are non-blacks. Hell of a thing to think for a person who is supposed to be president of the United States of America.

      We as conservatives have to start a campaign to educate these minority voters progressives are targetting to polute their minds with false information. We also have to create some kind of protection for companies so they are not so easily intimidated.

      Hell of a statement to make about a person who is the President of the United States of America. Your comment reeks with racism. Mr. Obama is and should be the President of ALL the people; after all, he is not the President of Black America.

      The ‘flash mobs’ are not and should not be on the President’s list of to-dos. Would you have asked President Bush to sit down and have a beer with them? Of course not. I can’t imagine what you would write if your request to the President was honored and he did indeed have a beer with that vermin.

      Barack Obama is a complete failure, but I can’t recall him doing anything overt against any particular group of people, except ‘the rich’. Yes, there was going to Rev Wright’s church, the hiring (and firing) of Van Jones, his support for Eric Holder, his noted beer with Harvard Professor Gates, and his statement that if he had a son he might have looked like Travon Martin, but I don’t think those things indicate anything other than stupidity.

      The story was about Van Jones which should have given you enough ammunition to vent your anger.

      What no coverage of Raul Rodriguez being found guilty of murder. The firefighter from Texas who tried to hide behind the Stand Your Ground Law and shoot up his neighbors. Guess the verdict doesn’t fit the narrative does it.

    Trayvon Martin is responsible for Trayvon Martin’s death! He exercised poor judgement in cutting through a ‘White Hispanic’ neighborhood one rainy evening–just like a ‘White Hispanic’ would be responsible for taking a shortcut through a ‘Black’ neighborhood on another rainy evening! You can’t be serious, Mr. van Jones, trying to ‘stick’ this misfortunate lack of good judgement by an individual on an ‘organization’ of any kind!

    Okay, So I just visited Johnson and Johnson’s website, and it was real easy to advise them that I am going to start purchasing their products for their support. I also thanked them for being true Merchant Patriots. I informed them of where the attacks are coming from (as if they did not already know) Also I advised that my new found support will only last as long as their support for ALEC does.

    There site does not support OPERA browser too well though. Darn Vista, forcing me to use browsers intended for Dial up connections. Sorry about the Tangent.

      I, as well, visited the J&J website and sent them an e-mail applauding them for their sponsorship of ALEC. Well, two days (today) later I received the following e-mail reply:

      Dear XXXXXX:

      Thank you for contacting Johnson & Johnson. We appreciate your interest in our company.

      Johnson & Johnson has been in dialogue with the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) for some time, and while we acknowledge ALEC’s recent decision to focus only on innovation and growth-supporting policies, we have decided to suspend our participation and membership. We will make certain your feedback is shared with the appropriate management of our company.

      Again, thank you for your interest in Johnson & Johnson.

      So there you have it. J&J has buckled under the Chicago-style intimidation political pressure and has pulled their sponsorship from ALEC. Thus, I “have decided to suspend our participation [shopping] and membership [purchases]” of the brands of products.

    I am so sick of hearing about the “suppression of the black vote”. what is the big damn deal with IDs? Seriously? You can’t drive, or buy cigarettes or alcohol without them, even if they’re expired. You have to be able to present one to a poice officer if he requests it. So what’s the deal? Here’s an idea: get a freakin ID, keep it valid and vote! No suppression! Sit down and shut up! Jeez…

      An I.D. is also required to receive welfare, get into the Democrat. Convention, cash checks, ect…
      A large majority of Americans across all political parties support voter I.D. laws and the left have their small minority so loud they are given undeserved clout. Heck they probably used their paid trolls and paid protesters to fake petitions and flood company complaint lines. The silent majority needs to get vocal now while we may still have a chance to save the republic and capitalism.

The democrats fought for slavery so hard it split the union and killed hundreds of thousands and when they lost they used Jim Crow to keep them down until the civil rights then Republican Dr. Martin Luther King was taken out before black Americans completely were led out of bondage, however the left fought back by destroying the black American family and enslaved them with entitlements.       Hold on now. This was a case of misunderstanding. Trayvon was just walking the neighborhood not looking for trouble and Zimmerman was looking for criminal activity due to recent occurances. They met – both with the wrong idea and a tragedy happened.

      @ONE1 – Martin attacked Zimmerman – there was no “misunderstanding”. Martin made the decision to attack Zimmerman, and Zimmerman defended himself, any “misunderstanding” in this case is a result of liberal-media spin.

      @ 65 Mustang… Love that car!!! First I am going to contact J%J and thank them for their support of pro U.S.A. policies. Then I‘m going to check the manufacturer of the household goods I use and see if the ones that aren’t made by J&J can be replaced with ones that are.
