Van Jones Warns of ‘Turbulent’ Election Year, Invokes Martin Luther King The ‘Original Occupier’

Van Jones Hosts Martin Luther King Day Gatherings

Van Jones, former “green jobs czar” and co-founder of “Rebuild the Dream” — billed as a “progressive” Tea Party — said Martin Luther King Day will  kick off what he claims will be a “turbulent, exciting” year, led by civil rights leaders pushing a new agenda of social justice.

“What are you doing this weekend for MLK Day? It’s our only national holiday about social justice, yet too often, MLK Day feels like a Hallmark Card. This year, let’s do it differently,” Jones told supporters in an e-mail.

“Rebuild the Dream members are hosting MLK Day Movement Meet-ups across the country to celebrate Dr. King — the original Occupier — and link the Civil Rights Movement with today’s struggle for an economy that works for all.”

Rebuild the Dream has reportedly made a video to air at the meetings, meant to jump-start the movement’s actions this year.

Below Jones’ email referencing Martin Luther King, courtesy of U.S. News:

Dear Paul,

What are you doing this weekend for MLK Day? It’s our only national holiday about social justice, yet too often, MLK Day feels like a Hallmark Card. This year, let’s do it differently.

Rebuild the Dream members are hosting MLK Day Movement Meet-ups across the country to celebrate Dr. King — the original Occupier — and link the Civil Rights Movement with today’s struggle for an economy that works for all.

Neighbors and friends will gather to watch a great video we made, plus engage in a special discussion about how we strengthen our movements in 2012.

Find an MLK Meet-up near you, or host one of your own.

2012 will be a turbulent, exciting year. It’s important for us to get together and get ready. This is your chance to touch base with friends and like-minded folks in your area, and start the new year right.

There is a lot for us to fight for, and people are continuing Dr. King’s struggle every day in the 21st century. With a rising movement sweeping the country, let’s gather together and ask: What would Dr. King and other civil rights leaders do today? How can we continue their legacy in 2012 and beyond?

MLK Day is an opportunity to take a day on, not a day off. The meet-ups will be an opportunity to join with those who share your same passion for positive change. It’s a chance to look back and look ahead — let’s look at one of the most important movements of our past as a springboard for the ongoing fight for justice.

Join a discussion in your area, or host one of your own.

Century after century, generation after generation, countless people of all different backgrounds have continued to arrive on America’s shores. Beyond our differences there lies the promise that maybe we can carve a better future for ourselves and our children and our children’s children, with opportunity and justice for all. This was the dream our country was founded on, and Dr. King’s dream throughout the Civil Rights Movement. Let’s gather this MLK Day and commit to continuing Dr. King’s fight for the dream.

Thanks for being a part of, and believing in, this movement,

Van, Billy, Natalie, Ian, Jim, Somer and the Rebuild the Dream Innovation Fund team

    Mr. Jones is a smart enough guy, but he and other supporters and organizers of the occupy movement miscalculated significantly in using the “occupy” approach. He’s still miscalculatingby associating and comparing King with what amounted to a group of squatters. King MARCHED, sometimes nightly and in peril, to get his message of social equality, not preference, to the media and to broader America. He was a man of action, not an agent engaging useful idiot to do what he would not. Van Jones is not an active change agent, he’s an agitator, and the communities he claims to help are to him just a mechanism for him to aggregate influence.

      Specifics please. Tell me what is stupid. Looks to me to be all facts.

      People are electing a Mormon. Fact.
      Romney lost to Mcain who got his butt handed to him by Obama. Fact.
      I am ready for it. Fact.
      I am voting for Ron Paul in 2012. Fact.

      Let me guess Bill Oreilly, Glenn, or Rush told you not to listen to the crazy, loon, dangerous, occupier, Ron Paul supporters.

      No I am giving my vote to Evangelical Christian with founding fathers principles. I dont believe Obama is a Christian and I dont believe Mormons to be Christians.

      Romney getting nominated will push more people to write in Ron Paul. Southern Evangelicals will not willing give their vote to a progressive Mormon. Some people have the mentality that (anyone but Obama) view. I feel a guy with the same progressive views minus a few tweaks on the wars, spending, and social engineering is not better than Obama. Obama gets us there quicker so we can start this thing over.

      Sure. Just write in Paul and get ready for Comrade Obama to really “change” America. A completely stupid and politically suicidal move.

      @ barber

      So democrats are for the Constitution and the principles of the founding fathers? No I dont think so. They are more for social control and restricting freedom, wealth redistribution. No post I have ever had would lead anyone to think that. You are just being a typical non thinker. You are allowing talking heads like Billy, Sean, Glenn and Rush to tell you who to vote for. Well I am not a sheep. I have to stand before God accountable for my actions. Voting is a action. If I vote for a non Christian, or a pro abortion guy, or a pro war/world cop, I believe I will be held accountable for that action.

      Now, tell me how my views are in any way unconstitutional and we can compare your views verse mine.

      @martinez012577: So tell me when Paul has ever won anything on a national level. He’s run for president before and never made it to the end. If the fact that Romney lost to McCain makes you some how think he’ll never beat Obama, what makes you think Paul can beat Obama? Remember, we want facts.

      @welcome

      If Obama and Romney are both on the same tracks headed in the same direction who cares. One is just getting their faster.

      @al

      Ron Paul hasnt won anything national elections in the past because ignorant people have allowed talking heads on tv and radio tell them who to vote for. (Rush, Bill, Sean, Glenn). The D and R are the same. Both parties, spend money like crazy. Go to war without using the Constitution. Both are for social engineering. What is the difference. Abortion? Hell Romney is only for pro=life now because he is running a national campaign for the R. Gun rights? Same as above? Spending cuts? I think Romney’s plan is to cut 30 billion first year. That is a drop in the bucket.

      Yes I think Romney has no shot. First off he is a Mormon. Most Evangelicals do not believe them to be Christian. This is a big deal in the south. No Republican can win the election without strong support from the southern states. Next is the Ron Paul people like myself are going to vote for Ron Paul. I would rather lose knowing I voted for the right person, than win knowing I voted for a Obama/Mcain lite. Then you add to the fact that Mcain got his butt handed to him by Obama. Mcain kicked Romney’s butt last election. What has changed. Obama did exactly what he said he was going to do.

      So it boils down to this. You can vote for Ron Paul and have a real shot at change in this country. Or you can vote Romney and lose to badly to Obama. You

      Poor, poor Paulbot… Lord protect us from the likes of him…

      @Martinez – Here’s the deal.

      Should Paul win the nomination – he cannot beat Obama – Obama wins.

      Should Paul run as a third party – the vote will be split – Obama wins.

      Should enough Paulbots, such as yourself, write in Paul – Obama wins.

      Obama wins – AMERICA IS LOST…

      Surely you see the errors in YOUR line of thought?

      Of course you will Martine. You’d rather be “right” and vote for Paul and get neo-comm Obama another term.

      So, who is putting the country at greater risk? That’s right. You are.

      And by your logic, Ronald Reagan shouldn’t have run in 1980. Paulista idiot!

      Kurt Vonnegut wrote an excellent short story on this matter entitled “Harrison Bergeron” in 1961. It paints a clear picture of what is meant by “social justice” and “economic equality.”

      I suggest you read it.

    Dear Van Jones –

    The current President is a horrible President. It’s funny that he has run his new campaign based on his “vision” and not his record. Truth be told he has no record and what he has is a catastrophe.

    It’s time to vote him out.

    Simple. As. That.
