Vatican Orders Overhaul of U.S. Nun Group Over Liberal Stances on Sexuality & Abortion

Vatican Orders Overhaul of Leadership Conference of Women Religious | Catholic Nuns

(The Blaze/AP) — The Vatican’s orthodoxy watchdog announced Wednesday a full-scale overhaul of a group representing most U.S. nuns and named an American archbishop to oversee the reform. The timing of the announcement is intriguing, especially considering ongoing angst within faith communities about the Obama administration’s contraceptive mandate, among other related issues.

The Vatican agency cited the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR), the largest umbrella group for Roman Catholic religious sisters in the United States, for using materials that “do not promote church teaching” on family life and sexuality, for sometimes taking positions in opposition to the nation’s bishops and for being “silent on the right to life from conception to natural death, a question that is part of the lively public debate about abortion and euthanasia in the United States.”

Representatives for the women’s group, based in Silver Spring, Md., did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Seattle Archbishop Peter Sartain will manage the five-year reform, which will include rewriting the group’s statutes, reviewing all its plans and programs — including approving speakers — and ensuring the group properly follows Catholic prayer and ritual.

The report specifically cites a social justice group associated with the conference called NETWORK, which played a key role in supporting the Obama administration‘s health care overhaul despite the bishops’ objections. The announcement Wednesday made no direct mention of President Barack Obama’s health care law, but said Sartain will review the Leadership Conference’s ties with NETWORK.

A screen shot from the LCWR web site

The review, which began in 2008, was a “doctrinal assessment” by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. When the inquiry was initially announced, many religious sisters and their supporters said the inquiry reflected church officials’ misogyny and was an insult to religious sisters, who run hospitals, teach, and play other vital service roles in the church.

Conservative Catholics, however, have long complained that the majority of sisters in the U.S. have grown too liberal and flout church teaching.

these religious sisters need to be obidient to the teachings of Christ and the church’s teachings as put forth by the Pope, Christ’s presence on earth. unfortunately for the good sisters, they are second class members of the Catholic church. their voices are there to support the church’s teachings. they are subservient to Christ. they need to look to the Blessed Mother as the example of their devotion to Christ.

Yes Geonj very true. My sister is a nun in the Catholic church, and according to her, many sisters in her convent are general Democrat voters (My sister is one of the few younger sisters…many are elderly..) Yet they don’t have much connection to the modern world (political that is) As these older sisters are still tied to the old school Democrats…Not the Progressive (aka Communists) that are there today.

They are ignorant. They just don’t know.

      I am an evangelical Christian.

I am a German citizen and I think it is great that there is a German Pope.

I support the Catholic Church and their stance on religious liberty.

But please do not call the Pope Christ’s presence on earth.

      That is blasphemy.

Will the Pope hand the ruling scepter over to Christ when He returns to earth?

I have never heard a more outrageous claim.

@LEUPOLD – Jesus is our KING, the KING of the Universe. Jesus gave the keys of the kingdom to Peter and ONLY to Peter and Jesus empowered Peter and the other Apostles with the authority to bind and loose on earth and in Heaven but the one who holds the KEYS has the final authority given to Him by Christ the King. Do you deny that Peter was given the keys? Who are you to deny this and by what authority do you 2000 years later reject Jesus Keys and proclaim Jesus decision “blasphemy”? I highly recommend you study the Old Testament (Isaiah 22:22) with a prayerful heart. In the time of King David if the King gave his KEYS to someone whatever he shut no one could open and whatever he opened no one could shut. Whoever possessed the KEYS ruled with ALL of the Kings authority during the Kings absence. Who would dare to question the Kings representative? Jesus most definitely left his KEYS with Peter. Jesus came not to abolish the law but to fulfill it. In passing the keys to Peter and guaranteeing that the gates of hell would not prevail Jesus established His Church for all eternity. This is not about Peter or any Pope, this is about Jesus authority. To deny that my friend……… is blasphemy. Peace be with you…

God has blessed the Pope with good sense. We are not catholic but my son attended catholic high school. One of the nuns wanted him to write a paper about how horrible American corporation treated workers in south America. My son wrote a well researched paper about how they went to rural areas, built factories, built roads, gave jobs to so many. And that they donated millions of foods and goods to poor. He got a c- because he did not give negative paper. My husband, an executive and I went in and had a talk with the “social justice” nun and gave her an American education about the benefits of world business. That was 10 years ago. Glad to see the socialist tripe will be challenged. And how could Notre Dame give Obama an(dis) honorable degree?.

You don;t have to go to a religious school to get that. Virtually every school teaches to the party line and not to factual history. Write a factual paper, get an F(you were lucky to get the C). Students are taught to think along socially appropriate ways and make the fact match.

I was comforted to read recently about how Pope Benedict has been actively trying to deal with the erosion in the faith by getting the right people in place…i.e..the true believers. These are the ones who still follow the traditional teachings and belief system…those that don’t accept the ramblings of “social justice that you hear from so many corners. Just as with our out-of-control government, it has to be “back to the basics” if we are to survive.

Starting in the sixties thousands of nuns and priests decided that they no longer wanted to believe in the magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church but rather in the sacredness of the Democrat party. However they still wanted the privileges and money that came along with being college professors. So they decided to pretend that they were still religious but live a life of secularism and progressive values. This has done untold damage to the Church and it is about time that something is being done. These Catholic schools should no longer be allowed to advertise themselves as Catholic; especially places like Georgetown a former elite Catholic school which is now an American Secular school. The remaining nuns and priests who no longer profess any form of traditional Christianity should as a matter of honor quit and join the ranks of Federal employees with whom they have so much in common. To be a Catholic is to willingly accept the teachings of a two thousand year old institution which was founded by Jesus Christ himself. God bless Pope Benedict who has started the cleaning process of this Augean stable. Extra Ecclesiam nemo salvus erit.

Catholic, for those who do not know, means universal church. all other christian churchs are groups who were to weak to follow the divinely created and infallable leadership of the universal church. ie the Pope, who is the only one who’s word bound on earth is bound, as well, in heaven.

encinom – Joseph Ratzinger has explained that his membership in the Hitler Youth was mandatory — it wasn’t his personal choice to join and he certainly didn’t join out of any personal conviction that the Nazis were right. Despite being a member, he refused to attend any meetings. Attendance would have reduced the cost of his schooling at the seminary, yet this did not deter him.

According to Joseph Ratzinger, it was “impossible” to resist the Nazis. Being so young, it wasn’t plausible for him to do anything against the Nazis and the atrocities they were committing. Nevertheless, the Ratzinger family did object to the Nazis and as a consequence were forced to move four times. It’s not as though they passively and quietly accepted what is going on, as many other families did.

Unlike George Soros who helped the nazis by sending his neighbors to camps and said it was the best time of his life!!!! I believe both the Pope and Soros were the same age at that time.

The priest you spoke with may simply have chosen to reserve comment, nothing more. Traditionally, during “formation” (the process of training for the priesthood, which lasts at 8 years or more) there is a big emphasis on not casting judgment, as the priest is seen as representing the teachings of Jesus… and even the most hardened ideologue is free choose to change his/her views. (Yes, there are exceptions, including many priests ordained during the 1970s and 1980s, when theological foundations in some seminaries became compromised. Recently there have been reforms to prevent the kinds of problems and abuses that began to appear in some seminaries during those years.)

The Pope and Cardinals are nothing more than flawed men, who have become drunk on imgained power. Their opinions are no more true than the opinions of any of the laity. In fact the Pope and Cardinals have proven that their quest for political power is more important than anyhting else, how else do you explain their active role in preventing outside investigations into the priest scandals.

Encinom said, “The Pope and Cardinals have lost touch with the American Catholic, the American Catholic no longers agrees with the teaching of the Church on Birth Control and other social issues.” Actually, its the other way around. The American church, (omission of Catholic and uncapitalized church intentional), (mis)led by many priests, bishops and nuns, have lost touch with Catholicism. Judging by your comments, you (like any in the American church) appear to think that Catholicism is a democracy. It is not. Like all religions, it is a discipline. You have free will to choose the path that Christ set out, the path that leads to Him, or to choose the opposite path, with the potential punishment that waits at the end of your life. Personally, I believe in Catholicism, but not in the practice of the American church. The problem with the American church is that it has abandoned the teachings of Catholicism. Birth control and abortion are two keep “social issues” where the it has failed to teach and explain the logic and beauty of Catholicism’s teachings. Instead, the bishops and priests cowered, not wanting to offend or stand in front of “progress.” We, as a society and as a religious faith, are paying a heavy price for that failure.

What you call “left messages” are echos of the teachings of the last pope and his support for the workers and the common man, not the current one’s power grab.

The Pope and Cardinals are not at war with laity. They are at war with people who say they are Catholic, but promote lifestyles, activities, and teaching in contradiction to Church doctrine. The Catholic Church is not a democracy. It is a Monarcy with Jesus Christ as King and the Pope as Chancelor (holding the keys to the Kingdom).

      Encinom…more lies and deceit.

It would make more sense to air the plethora of dirty laundry about the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints, on this website, wspecially sine it’s an issue in the upcoming presidential election.

Hey what dirty laundry would that be? Cause I tell ya we could talk about the sorted affairs and spending of former Evangelicals Baker and Swaggart. And many others.
but let’s look at one basic FACT:
in the USA we have freedom of
religion so a man or woman can worship according to the dictates of their own concience within the confines of the established laws of the state and country .
Why not embrace the freedoms afforded and celebrate the common ground instead of focusing on the negative and conflicting points of doctrinal interpretations ( which almost all sect have).

Long over-due! I fear way too many of our so-called relgious have all but lost their way in the Church.
They live, act, and speak as lay women and no one who meets them in public would even know they belong to a religious community. Sadly, too many of them don’t even livei n community! How can they justify that? And while they dress in the attire of laity, more often than not, their example is sorely lacking! Just what is religious life all about? Is it little wonder that the laity are less than inspired? And in all too many cases the work that these so-called ‘religious’ do is totally secular! Since when? Why!

I am a protestant married to a Catholic. We are raising our kids Catholic. Last Sunday, the preist called all the children down to the front of the church and talked about how “communism is what Jesus advocated” and compared monastical life to the Soviet Union.

There can be no doubt that the Catholic Church has lost its way, which is really, really sad…..

      @Marybeth

“We are not all Catholics now, no matter what Mr. Beck says.”

I agree, but for different reasons than what yours seem to be. If you conflate all of Christianity, then you lose the VERY important theological distinctions that make you believe your denomination is the right one. If I believed in Joseph Smith, I’d be a Mormon. But I don’t. If I believed in transubstantiation, I’d be a Catholic. But I don’t.

Beck’s point, obviously, was that we need to stand together or fall apart. I think saying “We’re all Catholics” is the wrong way to go about it. I prefer “We’re all Americans,” personally, or if it is specific to religion, “We’re all children of God.” That even includes those who don’t believe in Christ (like Jews).

“It would make more sense to air the plethora of dirty laundry about the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints, on this website, wspecially sine it’s an issue in the upcoming presidential election.”

Unless there’s news about LDS recently launching an investigation and overhaul into its associations, your comment makes no sense at all. This isn’t about the faith of the candidates, but faith in general. If you have a story on LDS overhauls, you have a point. Post it here (and submit it to The Blaze), and we’ll be happy to read it.

3monkeysmomma – If I had been in that church, I would have stood up, taken the children away from the front and made a statement to all present that that priest should be kicked out of the church and all parents should keep their children away from him. If we don’t stand against the Communists that infiltrated the Church, they will continue their agenda. Search Bella Dodd on the internet and read her story. She tells of the Communist infiltration of the church and the government.

      3monkeysmomma,

If what you are saying is true, Don’t lose any time. Find out who the Bishop is in your area and make a loud complaint. Ask other people there what ‘they’ heard. If it sounds like there was no misunderstanding, the man has to be turned in. Do it NOW!!!

The Catholic Church has mainly good priests by far. There are ‘some’ that are not teaching the Catholic Teaching. St Thomas Aquinas wrote about the ‘Totality of the CC’. Everything that is taught is to be believed ‘down to the last article’. I accept it all. I may not live up to everything, but having high principles is good. If we fail because of human weakness, it doesn’t make one a hypocrit. Hypocrasy always involves a ‘lie’.

Again as a Catholic I am saying you better speak up, for all our good. You can do it. I certainly would. Charity is Not communism.

Back to the nuns, they are going to have to fall in line, or not call themselves Catholic anymore. It’s about time, yeah, but Pope John Paul 2 was breaking up the USSR. Pope Benedict has cracked down on pedophilia, plus both, so so much more. Watch EWTN ‘World Over’. They tell the good ‘and’ the bad going on.

A priest won’t tell you who to vote for, only talk about an issue, that may be obvious. Abortion?

The last sentence our priest said in the sermon was, “We are Entitled to Nothing.” Going out I gave him the elbow. “Good Sermon. I caught that last line.” He just gave me back his smile.

just was out on a site covering the arizona abortion bill-and the hate that was being spewed against jan brewer and all of arizona for standing up for the unborn was palpable. making it sound like republicans were all about imprisoning with and beating them down—taking away their RIGHTS to kill their own babies.
as a mother-it was all i could do.
so i made a profile and left a little message:

    wow-such hate.
    what about the babies rights?
    and yes i said baby.
with my first child i ended up very ill and had to have early and frequent ultra sounds-at 6 weeks my daughter was absolutely a baby…hands, legs, feet, heart beating, head moving-baby.
if a jury has to be present when a convicted criminal is put to death-why shouldn’t a woman have to face her baby before he/she is put to death?
    just saying-
with life there are infinite choices and possibilities…with abortion-just one.

now i am not condemning any woman who has had an abortion-i am condemning the propagation of the lies of the left and the media ….
try finding out how planned parenthood came about…margaret sanger is a real peach of a racist & euthanasia proponent …she wanted to wipe out the black race from the face of the earth…

No question at all that she was both a racist and a eugenicist, just as was Hitler. As I said, read her own words, and stop believing in your fem-lib myth. The truth about Sanger and her ilk is quite ugly.

You are either misinformed, a liar or you are in denial.

There is little doubt that Margaret Sanger believed in Eugenics and wanted to eliminated the less intelligent and the “inferior races” from the US.

Go on youtube and you can hear her say these things in her own words.

The truth will set you free.
