‘Very Serious’: Aussie Cops Deal With ‘Collar Bomb’ Attached to Neck of Rich Teen Girl

UPDATE: The girl has been freed and identified. Read our follow-up story here.

Australia: Collar Bomb Attached to Neck of Rich Teen Girl
SYDNEY (MSNBC)— Australian police were trying to defuse an explosive device strapped to an 18-year-old girl’s body in a wealthy neighborhood of Sydney on Wednesday, according to local reports.

The situation was a “very serious and sensitive matter,” said New South Wales Assistant Police Commissioner Mark Murdoch, according to the Herald Sun.

Police said they did not know how the “collar bomb” had been strapped to the teen’s neck, but it was understood that she did not put it there herself, according to The Daily Telegraph.

The teen was “absolutely petrified,” the The Daily Telegraph reported. However, the Sky News Australia reports police say she is holding up well:

Australia‘s News10 offers a rundown of the day’s events:

Daily Mail:

It is understood the teenager, who recently celebrated her 18th birthday, is part of one of Sydney’s wealthiest families. She was said to be ‘absolutely terrified’ as bomb squad officers attempted to establish the volatility of the device.

Local reports said police believed a ransom note has been attached to the girl’s neck, but bomb experts were unable to get close enough to read its contents until they had decided if it was safe to approach the package.

Burrawong Avenue, Mosman, where the drama is being played out, is home to Australian racing identity Gai Waterhouse and ex-Wallaby rugby players Phil Kearns and John Eales.

The young woman’s parents, who have not been identified, were outside the house comforting one another.

Police are understood to be scouring other ‘items’ inside the house while the girl has moved to the front part of the building.
There were some suggestions that the drama mirrors a scene from the horror movie Saw and an episode of the CSI crime show.

Why is this so horrifying? Obama put a collar bomb around the neck of the wealthy United States and the GOP came and added a couple more locks to it.

Very sad to see how people have to terrify a little girl, or anyone for that matter in some effort to extort anything from them. This is absolutely not different then those disgusting suicide and homicide bombs in the middle east…. its a move by child-like mentalities… they can’t get their way fast enough through normal sitting down and discussing, so they have to throw a “temper tantrum” in the form of murdering and killing in some pathetic attempt to get their message across, in the end… everyone loses.

This girl is going to traumatized for years now because of this event.

I think this girl is going to have an increase in gratitude for the life she’s been blessed with and will live a productive, unhindered life, albeit traumatic at the time. No reason to assume future psychological issues.

And this idea may have come from a movie or a TV show? What a surprise. In the movie “Money Train”, some sicko was pumping gasoline into a subway ticket booth and lighting the cashiers on fire. Sure enough, someone did it for real shortly after that. I pray that this poor girl comes out of this alive and unharmed. But the mental damage it will leave her with is going to be tough to overcome. When they catch who did this, there isn’t enough prison time to give them.

      There isn’t enough prison time?

I was thinking more like strapping on one of their own collar bombs with a timer set for about a week.
Then let them wait it out until the end.

I got news for these cops; the movies they mention did indeed have collar bombs in them yet the fact also is there has been at least one REAL COLLAR BOMB here in AMERICA in the past. There was a pizza delivery man apprehended by police after a bank heist; around his neck was a collar bomb like this girl had — with him, the cops ordered him to remove it, constantly shouting down his claim he had no way to remove it and someone else had the trigger for the device — he was right, the cops watched with the rest of us on TV as it detonated, killing the man instantly.

To the best of my knowledge, no one ever was arrested in the murder of the pizza man or the making of the collar bomb.

Actually that man was a co-conspirator in that robbery. Look up Brian Douglas Wells. He apparently was under the impression that the bomb would not be real but was forced to go along with it after he found out it was real. One of the men involved plead guilty and received 45 years and another involved was convicted and sentenced to 30 years for her involvement.

Likely not. The bomb is reported to be sophisticated (ie, not a crappy IED you’d find from the third world), and it is for ransom, not pure terror. The girl is the daughter of a wealthy couple; odds are it’s an extortion attempt.

Hello Beck friends! I have started a prayer group for Glenn and his endeavors on educating our youth and his mission in Israel. This group also posts news articles and videos on topics Glenn has covered on his show. Many others and I are members of GBTV and will be discussing his show daily and posting what he shares on the Internet. This is a great way to stay in the loop if you do not have GBTV!. We have also been doing wonderful fast and prayers on Wednesdays for Israel! If you are a “like minded” Christian, Conservative Glenn Beck fan please join us (240 of us and growing rapidly and without the TROLLS)! Find me on Facebook under Sharon Grek Papucci and send me a friend request! Men may spurn our appeals, reject our message, oppose our arguments, despise our persons, but they are helpless against our prayers.” -Sidlow Baxter

I don’t jump to the conclusion that you are exclusively looking for Christians, but it is no business of anyones’ who you invite to what. Saul Alinskyites waste no opportunity to ridicule, harass, and bear false witness against anyone, particularly religious folks. Stand fast and pray for your enemies, do good to those that despise you. Jesus knew his politics better than anyone.
