EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (TheBlaze/AP) — In a sports stadium transformed into what was called the world’s largest synagogue, tens of thousands of people celebrated the completion of the reading of the Talmud, the book of Jewish laws and traditions.

The program at MetLife Stadium on Wednesday night combined a festive atmosphere of singing and dancing with the more serious pursuits of prayer and reflection; it was dedicated to the victims of the Holocaust.

“Tonight is a night of inspiration and opportunity,” Rabbi Elly Kleimnan told the gathering.

Rabbis from around the world addressed the audience during the five-hour program, and speeches and prayers in Hebrew and English were streamed by audio and video throughout the stadium’s concourses.

The celebration, called Siyum HaShas, marks the completion of the Daf Yomi, or daily reading and study of one page of the 2,711-page book. The cycle takes about seven and a half years to finish.

Organizers marked the start of the 13th cycle of study and reading. The event was organized by Agudath Israel of America, an Orthodox Jewish organization. It started celebrating the cycle of study in Europe in 1923.

Thousands of folding chairs and white plastic flooring transformed the stadium’s playing field. A dais was built for about 500 rabbis.

Here’s some cell phone video from the event:

A massive mechitzah, or divider that separates men and women during prayers, encircled the upper deck of the stadium, where women were seated. Its curtains were drawn during prayers and opened when they were over.

Women in the upper deck prayed from prayer books, listened intently to speeches and took cell phone videos of the gathering. Men rushed around the stadium’s hallways and field when not praying.

A little more than midway through the celebration, the rabbis sang Siman Tov and Mazel Tov, a song of celebration. Attendees danced, swayed in the stands and formed large circles on the field. Rabbis on the dais draped their arms around one another and sang into microphones while rocking from side to side.

The celebration was the largest celebration to date, officials said, with more than 90,000 tickets sold and simulcasts taking place at more than 100 locations worldwide.

It cost about $4 million, said Rabbi Yosef C. Golding, executive director of the Rofeh Cholim Cancer Society in Brooklyn, N.Y., who was in charge of logistics. Most of the money was raised from sales of tickets, which ranged from $18 to $1,000.

The program helped unite thousands of people worldwide who are studying the same page each day, said Rabbi Gedaliah Weinberger, chairman of the Daf Yomi Commission at Agudath Israel. NJ.com has some of the reaction from participants:

Among the thousands of people streaming in was Yitzy Kohen, 41, from Brooklyn. “It’s the greatest thing in the world to have so many people come together,” he said. “Black hats, no hats, ultra orthodox, all coming together from all different walks of life. It’s very spiritual.”

Even though he didn’t follow the “page-a-day” reading method perfectly, Kohen studied the Talmud in his own way and still felt connected to the massive event.

“This is awesome,” said Yochonon Mandel, 26, also from Brooklyn. “It’s all of my people here in one place. I’m really happy to be a part of it. It’s important to my Jewish brothers that we could all make it here.”

Entering the stadium with his 10-year-old son was Neil Strauss, 53, also from Brooklyn. Tonight marks his fourth time attending Siyum Hashas. “The Talmud is the oral law of the Torah,” he said. “It covers everything. Its the Jewish law, your outlook on life, everything is there. I try to live by that, so I had to come here.”

“In a certain sense it helps unite everyone, because you have these many thousands of people, tens of thousands of people, who are each studying the same page at any given day,” Rabbi Weinberger said. “Someone could be from a different city, a different school, a different country. They have a lot to talk about. That was part of the original intent.”

Col. Rick Fuentes, superintendent of the New Jersey State Police, said about 600 state police and members of 71 agencies worked at the event.

Fuentes said troopers completed an eight-hour course where they were familiarized with the stadium and learned about the customs of the Jewish community.

February 25, 1972: “And we shall tell thee again of the seven spirits of your Father, and of the coming of the Messiah unto the same, for as we have said before, we were sent by those who should ask our Father to prepare a way for their coming. And as man did come into five places upon your earth in the beginning, so it should be unto the five spirits that should enter at the time of the coming of the Messiah into the same, for he shall not be of one spirit, but he should stand as the five of before. And as the seven spirits of our Lord shall descend into the same, and so it shall be again, the twelve shall walk upon your earth. And then, our Lord, God, should enter into this one and it should be of Thirteen.” [See Acts 1:6-20, 2:2-28, The Revelation of John 1:4-9, 12-20, 4:1-6, and 12:1-2,10.]
“As we have said before, the chain has been broken many times by your people through your foolish acts unto the same. But none should harm this one who should enter, for our Lord, God, shall be present in this one. And then should come your thousand years of peace upon the earth, and each day shall be as a thousand of your years, for they shall not be as you count, but as our Father counts.” [See The Rev., chaps. 16-17 and 19-22.]
“And as we have said before, the Hebrew people should bow before this one, for they should know that this is their Messiah in truth.” [See Isaiah, chaps. 11, 52, Zechariah, chaps. 12-14, and The Rev.14:1-15 and 15:1-4.]

[Continued] “For as we have said before, Lord of Isaiah, Lord of Moses, Lord of Jesus, Lord of Buddha, Lord of Mohammed, Lord of Ishmael, so it should be again.
And we say, hark into thee, for as the first coveth [covenant] was given unto the Jewish people, and they, in themselves, were the servants of God, and as the second coveth was given unto the one known as Jesus Christ, so it has been in many lands, in many tongues, for as the spirit has flown and walked upon your earth. But remember unto these words. The coveth that was given unto the one known as Jesus was given not for the Jewish people, for they themselves had found their God; this was given that it may be given unto the world of the same. And as the coveth was given into Buddha, this was given that that proportion of your world should know of him. And as it was given unto Mohammed, it was given that they should know of the Jewish God, of the Jesus God, and of your God.
And now, we say unto thee again, we have come to prepare a way, and therefore, give unto thee a new coveth, and this coveth shall go unto the world. But remember these words — thy can destroy nothing; thy must build upon what is already there. And as we have said before, and the bird of the Great Pyramid shall, therefore, take wings again.” [See Exodus 13:17-22, 14:18-24, 16:9-12.]

So why does most of the world’s population know nothing about what Jews believe? If they are God‘s chosen people why didn’t they spread the message in the Torah before the time of Jesus to the entire world? Why didn’t Jews proseltize when their mission as the so called “chosen people” was to spread the concept of one God to all the world? It seems to me that the Jews were selfish and concerned only about themselves, their traditions, and being ethnically pure rather than bring he message of the one true God to all the human race. It took the Jewish Christians and later the Christian Church to do that job. Where was God during the Holocaust of the Jews in Europe from 1939 to 1945? Why didn’t He perform a miracle and stop the Holocaust of those who were supposedly His people?

You have a lot of questions.

Most of the world doesn‘t know about what we believe because God didn’t think it was necessary. Otherwise you would know.
Jews did not prosletize to the world because most of the time it was life-threatening to engage in such practices.
The Jewish People did bring the worship of one God to the human race. Where do you think the Christians and Muslims got the idea? From us, naturally.
God did not disappear during the Holocaust. He knows everything that was done to every single individual Jew and He will reward the suffering of them all and punish dearly all those who took part in that suffering. God is good and does good, and everything that we have suffered is only for our good. One day, in the future, we will be privileged to see how it was good.

It depends on which version of the Talmud you are talking about. Jesus is mentioned in earlier versions, but later was edited out. Some people attribute Jewish success to eons of Talmud study. Even the S. Korean Education ministry uses the Talmud to boost critical thinking.

I think there is also a lot to learn from the messages in the Talmud too. Such as:

“If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?”

    or

“Keep your distance from the government.”

There are actually two Talmuds. The most commonly studied one is the Babylonian Talmud since its origins are fm the Jewish community in Mesopotamia. The other, shorter and less studied one, is the Palestinian Talmud fm its origins in Javneh/Jamnia in the Holy Land.

Either will give you a sense of Jewish life in the first century AD and an early glimse of what would become Rabbinic Judaism that we know today. The other Jewish traditions die out with the loss of the Second Temple (AD 70) and the destruction brought about when the bar Kochba revolt failed (ca AD 132).

These two events created a new diaspora for both Jews and Christians in the Eastern Med basin. Many Jews fled into the Parthian Empire, safe fm Rome. Those w/commercial ties fled into the larger cities of Hellenized Asia Minor and beyond.

Jews remaining in the Holy Land had to put up w/Romans and lived as poor farmers, forbidden to enter Jerusalem which had been destroyed and rebuilt as a Roman city in honor of the emperor.

There are translations of the Talmud into English, making it accessible for a wider audience than just those who speak Aramaic or liturgical Hebrew. Go to http://www.forgottenbooks.org for the 9 vol set.

You really know nothing about Judaism at all, do you? In Jewish tradition the Torah (or Bible in English) is the written law while the Talmud is the oral law that was later written down. Both are held to have been given to Moses who in turn taught it to the people. Just as the Federalists Papers are the detailed explanation of the Constitution, the Talmud has a similar relationship to the Torah. For example, the first issue dealt with in the Talmud involves the Shema prayers that Jews say twice a day. The verses themselves are taken directly from the Bible and the issue being dealt with in the Talmud (which encompasses several pages of discussion) is what is the latest time it can be recited at night.

And as for Jews needing to read the Bible, Jews read through the Five Books little by little on a weekly basis and complete the entirety of it annually. Ever hear of Simchat Torah? The holiday where Jews literally dance in the streets with the Torah to celebrate its completion. I don’t see you doing that.

If your going to be ignorant about something, don’t try and pretend that you know anything about it. You just come off looking like an idiot.

We Jews read the first five books every week and finish it every year. Many people study the rest of the Bible and finish it every two years. We encounter God on every page of the Talmud. Without the Talmud, the Bible is a closed book to the intelligent student for without the Talmud there is no way to know absolutely what any verse in the Bible is teaching us.

ok, so there are issues. But before I allow my head and heart to allow division, i choose to remember the main things – 1) the origin of Judaism is GOD – same God (G-d), Father of Christ Jesus, Head of the Trinity. 2) over 2000 years we Christians have injected our own ideas resulting in multiple divisions in the Church (Catholic, Protestant and all the Protestant denominations) – so this is not unforseen. Bottom line – humans will mess it up, it’s what we do – and each of us individually are responsible to recognize the TRUTH, and accountable to God to do so. We will answer for just that – alone, w/no excuses on judgement day. I choose to stand on the Rock. Set aside our differences, focus on where we agree (such as God created the heavens and the earth and all that is in it, the Jews are his chosen people and whoever blesses them, he will bless…..) and pray that I would faithfully fulfill the great commission. God in Heaven, bless us with wisdom and discernment. Help us recognize the spiritual battle going on around us every moment every day and protect us from every barb of the enemy. Let us Stand and fight the good fight! In Jesus’ Mighty Name!!!!

@Anyone who wishes to cite “evil intent” in the Talmud
I have yet to see even ONE of you so much as offer a single verse, link, or citation to back up your claims. You really think people are going to look through over 2,000 pages of a text written in an all but dead language just to prove you wrong? I‘ve studied a little Talmud myself and let me tell you that unless you are taught how to read it you won’t understand a word. The Talmud often uses a form of shorthand, has little punctuation, and frequently uses abbreviations and acronyms. Moreover, the Talmud was written in a way that assumes the reader already has a working knowledge of Jewish law and tradition.

Not one of you could open that text and read it because not one of you would bother learning how to. Talmudic scholars spend their entire lives studying this text and you arrogantly believe that you of all people can be considered experts? Next you’ll tell me that someone who read only the Constitution, has not read the Federalists Papers, the works of constitutional scholars, court rulings, and has no knowledge of history whatsoever is qualified to lecture us on the true purpose and meaning of the Constitution.

In the Talmud, Jesus is described as an insolent apostate Jew with immoral tendencies who tried to lead the Jews astray and claim Messiah-hood falsely, thus putting the Jewish community at risk. There is nothing pernicious about it. He received his punishment on earth but apparently it wasn’t enough, as in Heaven he was punished to sit in boiling excrement. Nevertheless, when questioned in a seance in Roman times what his advice was concerning the Jews, he advised seeking the good of the Jews and not evil.

I‘ll be waiting and I won’t be holding my breath.

@Clouds Don’t worry, we won’t.. Us Jews think Jesus is laudable for his philosophical view but is nonetheless a false god so this well never ever ever ever ever happen unless you christians continue your mission of killing all the Jews. Then you can move on to the Atheists too and when you’re all done massacring sit down and remind yourselves how “good” your religion is and dismiss your sins of murder because hey, you are already a bunch of big ole sinners anyway so whats a few more sins?

Nice response, to a voice asking a blessing. You should be proud of what jerk you make yourself out to be no matter what you believe.

He has already, most people miss the fact that Jesus is our connection to the past of Judaeism found in the old testament, and he is the branch for the Christians who accept and follow him in the new and in the testimony we write unto the world with Him and His Father in our lives by faith, word and deed.

Too many pastors refuse to teach or explain the fullness of how we came as a faith from the roots of Judaism and into fullness under Christ, and the harvest is still being prepared for gathering. I have to wonder at times, if people are not such hard headed and hard hearted (as God called Israel and many other lands, stiff necked, dull eared and dull eyed), would Christ have been sent back to gather his people to present unto God by now?
