Vets Angry After Navy Sec. Names Warship After Former Dem Rep. Murtha

Traditionally, secretaries of the Navy get the honor of naming warships in America’s Naval fleet. But Navy Secretary Ray Mabus is running into stiff opposition over his latest pick: the late Pennsylvania congressman John Murtha.

“Both in uniform and in the halls of Congress, Chairman Murtha dedicated his life to serving his country both in the Marine Corps and Congress,” Mabus said last spring following Murtha’s death. “His unwavering support of our sailors and Marines, and in particular of our wounded warriors, was well known and deeply appreciated.” Murtha was awarded two Purple Hearts during his service in Vietnam and served Pennsylvania’s 12th Congressional District from 1974 until his death last year.

But Mabus’ praise for Murtha is falling on the deaf ears of a number of former sailors and Marines who say naming a vessel for Murtha simply rewards a lawmaker who called for pulling U.S. troops out of Iraq during the height of war’s toughest fighting. Many veterans also point out that Murtha was also implicated in bribery schemes and engaged in much-criticized pork-barrel politics. Last Friday, one of Murtha’s former aides was sentenced to serve 27 months in prison for evading limits on campaign donations. Additionally, Murtha was named as an “unindicted co-conspirator” in the FBI’s 1980 Abscam sting.

What’s worse, sailors and Marines say, in 2006, Murtha claimed that Marines in the Iraqi city of Haditha had “killed innocent civilians in cold blood.”

“Name a ship after a congressman who disgraced himself by rushing to judge that fellow Marines had committed murder in Iraq?  Can you be serious?”one retired Marine major general remarked to TIME.

Facebook groups have cropped up online protesting the Navy Secretary‘s decision and more than 200 people voiced their complaints in comments to the Navy’s announcement.  Not a single person voiced support for the decision, TIME notes.  “As active duty lieutenant commander, I would resign my commission before accepting orders to this misnamed ship,” one officer posted anonymously on the Navy’s website.

Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has voiced her support of “our dear Jack” and a USS Murtha:

“Whether on the battlefield, or on the bedside, he thanked them for their courage, listened to their concerns, and asked them for comment — and he answered their needs, and responded to their calls, whether it was for body armor, up-armored vehicles… radios, you name it,” Pelosi said. “In those minutes [together], he bonded with them especially because he would share his own personal military service with them, and cared for them as a father. They knew it, and they returned his respect.”

But from sailors’ point of view, the story of the 19-term congressman is a very different account.  On the Navy’s official website, many have decried the decision to name a ship after Murtha as a “slap in the face,“ ”inappropriate,“ and ”an absolute disgrace.”

“The naming of LPD 26 after John Murtha is inappropriate,” wrote David Martin. “There [are] many men and women with greater records of valor and service to the country who deserve the honor of having a warship named in their memory before John Murtha has a warship [named] in his honor. He made sure there was an airport named after himself. What more does there need to be?”

In addition, letters in the January issue of the independent naval magazine Proceedings also voiced opposition.

“The Navy’s scheme for naming ships, especially capital ships like carriers and subs, has become a joke,” writes Douglas Pauly, recalling when carriers were named for battles, battleships for states, cruisers for cities, destroyers for people, and submarines for marine life. Traditionalists like the convenience of such categories, where knowing the name of a vessel instantly declares what kind of ship it is.

TIME notes that in naming a ship for Murtha, Mabus is breaking with the old tradition of naming a San Antonio class ship after a U.S. city. Work on the Murtha has begun and a spokesman for the Navy Secretary says Mabus has no intention of reversing his decision to honor the late congressman.

He believes that “the naming honors Congressman Murtha’s lifetime of service to the Marine Corps, in Congress and to our nation.” Of course, sailors and Marines, used to being ignored by the brass, are coming up with their own names for the Murtha. Right now, USS Cold Blooded Killers seems to be their top choice.

    Murtha may have started out as a patriot but he eventually turned into a traitor. He sold out our men & women in uniform. He is dead now, some things are best just forgotten. Ray Mabus should leave well enough alone and seek his PC points elswhere.

    Never liked this man. He is from a district near where I live. Never could understand why the voters from his district kept electing him. I agree. He put our soldiers in the toliet when he made those comments about them and about Iraq. Never, ever should his name be on anything but his grave.

      Nobody who publicly defamed the US Military should have his name after the U.S. S. on anything unless it’s being put out by the USSR maybe in their history books, because I remember him often choosing Pork over actual needed equipment. His votes helped this country go far toward the same bankruptcy which brought down the old Soviet Union. ( If anyones watching, it’s beginning to look like that bear was only sleeping, and they’ve been invited into our Hemisphere!)

    I am a Navy Veteran (two Med Cruises and one Caribean Cruise on USS Oglethorpe and one Med Cruise on USS Fremont) and I am disgusted by Murtha’s treatment of the Military. Maybe name a New York Garbage Skow after him, but never a United States Warship.

      Well Deut22, I am a combat veteran of the Marine Corps and it gives me the right to speak out against naming the Naval vessel in honour of Murtha. He might have been a great Marine officer, he might have been a great Marine in general, but he disgraced himself and attempted to bring shame on all Marines by his careless and FALSE statements about the Marines murdering innocent civilians in Iraq. His actions brought shame upon his service. And at the end of his life, he was just a crook like the rest of them who serve in Washington.

      —I agree. They are all corrupt in one way or another but that doesn’t diminish his service. If we used your standard though any military hero who subsequently went into politics would be barred from having this honor.I do respect your opinion though and thank you for serving.

If you were truly an honorable person in the military, it would extend past your time in service and follow you into your next career. If you were just putting on a show, that will reflect as well, as is the case with John Murtha.

      I am disgusted by this, and his “service” to this country is a disgrace also.He made a freaking career out of being in Congress, 19 (terms) give me a break!!!!! They act like we should be giving him praise instead of disgust,,,,No one should ever be allowed to serve that long and have the perks of that office for that long. He felt compelled to call them“cold blooded murderers” without proof and was a “king of Pork barrel spending” he built that dang “airport” and named it after himself and after all that money being spent for thiis project it is a total waste, I believe there is only about 3 planes that use that airport and 1 was his. A total disgrace!!!!!!!!!

      Desmond T. Dobbs, USMC medic, Battle of Bloody Ridge, Okinawa during WWII. Quaker by religion. Refused to pick up a weapon during boot camp or battle. Held up a major offensive for 15 minutes while he prayed on his Sabbath. Won Medal of Honor for rescueing 75 dead/wounded by himself. Not only brave but humble. Or maybe Richard Winters, Major, US Army, Easy Company, 506 parachute infantry, 101 Airbourne Screaming Eagles. Either one a better choice.

      Murtha made statements that a few people found offensive. Murtha earned the right to criticize the military. Murtha volunteered for combat in Viet Nam as a reserve officer, saw combat and received 2 Purple Hearts, a Bronze star with Valor and several others while Cheney and the hero of the right fatboy Rush got deferments and W quit after the USAF spent a million dollars training him as a pilot.

      How many Purple Hearts do you have or any of the others here? This guy left active duty with the Marines in 1955 and then volunteered for combat in 1966, was wounded twice and decorated for valor. He fought hard for veterans as a Congressman. As far as the murder comment, there is a Marine charged in the incident:
      On December 21, 2006, the US military charged Wuterich with 12 counts of unpremeditated murder against individuals and one count of the murder of six people “while engaged in an act inherently dangerous to others.”[

      Serving in the military in no way guarantees that you are an honorable man. I served during the Viet Nam era and the ranks were filled with misfits…. Many were there because a judge had given them a choice of either jail or Army.

      Some people like Jihn Kerry enlisted back in the day to make themselves look good so they could fool people and run for office and get a cush job where he sits today. and we now see how Murtha and Kerry looked at our country and the things they did to destroy it and our military. I mean come on… Who has more pictures of themselves while serving than John Kerry. He has like a few hundred of himself.

      They don’t serve us, “We the People” serve them, because they get paid almost $180,000.00yr. We need to get back to when they served us. And for this naming a boat after this con-man would be disgracing all the military branches, it would be like taking a crap on the American flag.

      I have to admit I have no purple hearts and unfortunatly am not able to serve, but I have felt the sting of war. With that said, Murtha disgraced himself when he defamed Frank D. Wuterich and his troops. Before the reports were out he had already convicted them. We can’t forget the Abscam event.
      Look, I can’t take anything away from his service to our country and he did help vets and active soldiers during his political career, but In my very humble opinion he became a corrupt politician and there are many many more worthy vets to give this honor to.

      Perhaps with the repeal of DADT, this is to be a gay/lesbian ship only. It probably will be used only as security for the port of San Francisco, seeing as how we have to protct our cities that, like Murtha, are anti-war.

      There is one thing more disgraceful than a ship being named after Murtha. That was Murtha saying ‘the people in my district are rednecks and racist’ before the ‘08 election. Then, those same ‘racist and redneck’ voters actually voted him back into office again. Guess they had to prove to him they were neither of those things. You get the gov. you deserve.

      Praise him all that you like, you seem to be in the minority on this issue. As an Iraq War veteran myself (Army), I was absolutely outraged at the comments Murtha made at the height of the war about those Marines, I remember it well. Adn just like with Jane Fonda, we won’t forget, we won’t forgive.

      Murtha is a traitor to the military. The US Marines have already disowned him. If he had made the murder comments while on active duty he wauld have been court martialed under the laws of UCMJ
      and would have been dishonorably discharged. His service and awards don’t mean jack diddly squat.
