VFW Commander Moves to Dissolve PAC Following Contested Endorsements

After members’ outcry over a number of political endorsements reached Richard L. Eubank, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Commander-in-Chief didn‘t hesitate to ask the group’s PAC to rescind them.  But the VFW PAC was unrelenting in their choices leaving Eubank one last option.  In a Memorandum to the VFW’s National Council of Administration, Eubank has called for a vote of “no confidence” to disband the VFW PAC.

It is now evident to most of the VFW leadership, both National and especially the departments, that the VFW has been subjected to extreme negative publicity throughout the nation, and the recent endorsement decisions have, in fact, harmed the VFW’ s reputation and future ability to fulfill our mission.

I cannot let this erosion of public support for our great organization continue. …

The backlash doesn’t stop there, however.  The VFW’s Ladies Auxiliary has also pulled all its funding from the PAC, a significant amount  of the total funds raised for it.

The VFW is one of the best organizations that has ever been. We can’t let the progressives just take it over. Just like in war we have to be strong and kick the progressives out and not let them back in charge of anything. I served in VN 68 69 in II core. MacV recon. I will always try my best to keep the VFW standing for the soldiers that have served. We need to stand strong for our beliefs and not let the enemy win at any cost.

Finally, a sensible response from a revered organization. At last, the VFW has done a great service to its members and the nation. Good for you, VFW. Keep up the good fight and defend our veterans.

God bless you Richard L. Eubanks. Progressives have invaded every aspect of American life in order to pursue their horrid agenda. They are in every thing from our veterans organizations, to our churches, to our schools, and even our organizations that support children with disabilities. I deplore the destruction of our country and I wonder what it is going to take to get it back. Disband all of the organizations that endorse candidates? Rely on our own devices instead of what the AARP or the VFW or the Catholic Bishops endorse? All of the above?

First, to all of those who have served in our military, thank you for your service. For those in the VFW thank you for risking life and limb in order to protect our freedom.

This smells like a fight over the Connecticut Blumenthal debacle. Better to give nothing than to support a fraud.

My father was in the VFW (my mother was in the Auxiliary) until his death. He served aboard the USS Manila Bay (CSS 62 – a Casablanca Class aircraft carrier) in the Pacific. He was a radio navigator/ machine gunner. It was not unusual at the dinner table for my father, on occasion to pull a piece of shrapnel from one of his legs. This went on for years so as a young child I saw first hand the result of war on my father’s person and therefore gained a strong respect for anyone who served and fought in a war. It is tiring at best to hear politicians use any military experience be it active or passive during war time for political gain. I admire every single person who has served and put his/her country first. But not the politicians who prostitute themselves in order to gain power.

Thanked your dad for his service in my prayers.

USS Manila Bay participated in the Battle of Leyte Gulf proudly. It was where a Destroyer Escort,

Destoyers, and Several Jeep Carriers sacrificed themselves to save the troop landings. They

defeated a vastly superior Japanese fleet. My dad was on a repair ship in the Phillipines

As with many well-intentioned organizations, the leadership has been infiltrated by progressive minded individuals and their influence in the election process is just now being noticed by the membership. Many citizens blindly gave money to a group they believe is promoting their values and moral standing on issues, only to find they have been duped and the opposite is true. It is time for individuals that fund or volunteer for any organization to review it’s platform and political policies before cutting that next check. If you feel strongly about the organization itself, spend a little time at their meetings, volunteering for service projects, or perhaps running for office. Lots of these organizations are worthwhile and their membership are fun and friendly folks – it’s the administrators that need a little work.

Fact of life. So few people volunteer to work to move a cause ahead. That allows progressives to infiltrate into leadership positions that allow them to make decisions like supporting/endorsing Boxer. Notice that the PAC Committee is NOT elected by members by appointed.

This is also a danger to the Tea Party movement. That is why we MUST be careful in who will support as a “Tea Party” candidate.

I‘ve been a member of the VFW Auxiliary for over 20 years and I’ve thought that the VFW has ALWAYS made “questionable” endorsements of political candidates on a national scale. That being said, I can’t say that I agree with their decision to dissolve their PAC. Seems to me like, yet again, another knee-jerk reaction to some goings on within the organization. (If you’re not involved in a local VFW, you won’t have ANY clue what my last statement means.) They get all worked-up about a current issue, take-action and then usually forget within 6 months WHAT action they took…the one that they were all “worked up over” just a few months prior. The VFW PAC will be back up and operational before the 2012 election cycle. I hope. I also hope/wish that they would POLL their membership (online would be great) BEFORE their “new PAC” decides to endorse ANY candidate from ANY district.

this is subversion and tyrany in its most hideous form. Those of us that are veterans and associated with groups like the VFW should be able to count on our leadership to honor and defend the memory and commitment of the poven warriors and hold high those principals we risked life and limb to defend. To have it infiltrated and subverted due to political favor is an insult to every vet alive and dead. Every member in the PAC should be deposed and the PAC if it remains , should be restructured and issue their support according to general membership consensus. Providing support to candidates that have not been vetted for ideological standing. Candidates should never be allowed to be on the supported list when they are involved in organizations like DSP, and other communist or Anti-American, constitutional deconstructionist groups hell bent on the destruction of the USA.

This wa a huge failure on the part of the commander to not see this as a potential disaster. Makes you wonder what he got in exchange for allowing this to happen. Sad, sad, sad.

I called, sent an email and already wrote a nastygram to them in their self addressed and stamped “we need your membership dues” envelope.

Here is a copy of the email I received in reply.

“Thank you for contacting VFW National Headquarters.
First let me apologize for the generic response in regard to VFW-PAC, as many of our members and supporters have questions regarding recent endorsements. I will do my best to sum up quickly the events that have taken place and what we can expect to see in the near future.
VFW-PAC was formed in 1979 by the delegates of the VFW 80th National Convention as a committee that would operate as a “separate and non-partisan organization charged with the single task of working in Congress to support candidates who have taken responsible positions on issues involving national defense and legislation pertaining to the nation’s veterans”.
On September 24, 2010 VFW-PAC released its list of endorsed candidates, immediately igniting controversy over many of its choices.
VFW’s initial response dated October 8, 2010 stated the national line officers of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) are at odds with the VFW Political Action Committee (PAC), calling the methodology process used by the PAC “seriously flawed at best this year and in immediate need of extensive review” further stating, “Obviously, an organization’s political positions have to reflect the opinions of its members. But those opinions can’t be perceived as ‘off the wall,’ and the methodology used this year to grade candidates obviously is skewed in favor of the incumbent. That isn’t fair, and it actually subverts the democratic process.” It was at this time VFW line officers had decided to bring the question of continued existence of the PAC to the floor during the 112th VFW national convention in August 2011. Many of you questioned, “Why 2011?” Because the VFW By-Laws allow for the PAC Committee to exist and VFW By-Laws may only be amended by the delegates of the VFW Convention, which is held annually.
As word of the endorsements spread, members and supporters of VFW grew more irritated over VFW-PAC’s choices and demanded answers.
Not understanding that the VFW itself had no control over the endorsements, many of you continued to write, expressing displeasure asking the national commander somehow intervene. In an open statement to VFW members, national officers stated “As determined in the VFW By-Laws, as the national officers, we have specific responsibilities to take definitive action when events can have a detrimental impact on the organization. It is clear to us that the current situation now demands direct action; therefore, we are requesting the chairman and the directors of the Political Action Committee immediately rescind their endorsement actions.” The VFW-PAC refused, stating “VFW-PAC disagrees with those who claim their endorsement process is skewed, flawed, or unfair”.
On October 15, 2010 VFW National Commander Richard Eubank, using his authority under Section 619 & 620 of the VFW National By-Laws/Manual of Procedure, withdrew all PAC Committee appointments effective immediately. Furthermore, he is asking the VFW national council for a vote of “no confidence” in the VFW PAC (this council administers the affairs between conventions). VFW national officers are gearing up to propose an amendment to the VFW National By-Laws to dissolve VFW-PAC.
It is important to remember, VFW membership dues nor donations made to VFW or VFW Foundation do not support VFW-PAC.

I already had canceled my membership, about three days ago. I called national headquarters and asked to resign my membership and the lady I talked to sounded pretty exasperated and told me snippily that I had to do so in writing. So I immediately typed out a letter explaining why I was resigning my long-time membership and mailed it off to them. I suspect they got a bunch.
