Video Captures Killing of Mexico Mom at Vigil for Her Slain Teen

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico (AP) — Gunmen killed a mother who had been protesting for three days in front of a governor’s office in northern Mexico to demand justice for her slain daughter, authorities said Friday.

Masked men pulled up in a car Thursday night and shot Marisela Escobedo Ortiz in the head in front of the governor’s office in Chihuahua city, capital of Chihuahua state, said Jorge Gonzalez, special state prosecutor for crime prevention.

Surveillance cameras around the government building showed gunmen getting out of the car and Escobedo running into the street toward the governor’s palace, but one of the gunmen chased her down and shot her — an image transmitted repeatedly on national television broadcasts.

A spokesman for the state attorney general’s office, Carlos Gonzalez, said the gunmen exchanged angry words with Escobedo’s brother just before the shooting. He said investigators believe one of them is Sergio Barraza, who had been the main suspect the killing of Escobedo’s 17-year-old daughter. He was absolved by a court in April for lack of evidence.

Escobedo was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where she died within minutes.

She had been campaigning for a conviction in the killing of her daughter, Rubi Frayre Escobedo, whose burned and dismembered remains were found in a trash bin in the border city of Ciudad Juarez on June 18, 2009. She had been missing for nearly a year.

Escobedo had staged numerous marches, once wearing no clothes, wrapped only in a banner with her daughter’s photograph.

“This struggle is not only for my daughter,” Escobedo said then through a megaphone, her voice breaking. “Let’s not allow one more young woman to be killed in this city.”

Three days ago, Escobedo planted herself in front of the offices of Gov. Cesar Duarte and vowed not to move until investigators showed progress in the case. In an interview with the newspaper El Diario on Sunday, Escobedo said she had received death threats from Barraza’s family.

Duarte said state security officials had been assigned to protect Escobedo, although from a distance. He said their failure to protect Escobedo on Thursday would be investigated.

Prosecutors said Barraza, Frayre’s live-in boyfriend, admitted murdering her and led police to the body. But during the trial, he proclaimed his innocence and claimed he had been tortured into confessing. A judge ruled in April that prosecutors failed to present material evidence against him.

The case exemplifies the problems of the judicial system in Chihuahua state, one of the first in Mexico to adopt oral trials instead of the system of closed-door interrogations and filings of documents used for most Mexican trials.

Despite training, Chihuahua police and prosecutors have struggled to adapt to a system that puts the burden of proof on prosecutors. Many homicide cases have been thrown out for lack of evidence or never make it to trial. Often, police rely solely on confessions that suspects later claim were made under duress. Newly captured suspects in much of Mexico are often displayed to the press with bruised faces.

Duarte, however, accused the court of wrongly releasing Barraza. He said he has requested that the Chihuahua judiciary fire the three judges who presided over the case and that the state legislature strip the judges of their immunity from prosecution so they can be charged with abuse of power.

In Ciudad Juarez, where Frayre was killed, police have overwhelmed by drug gang battles that have made city one of the world’s deadliest. More than 3,000 people have been killed in the city of 1.3 million this year alone.

Records obtained by The Associated Press show that last year, when 2,600 people were killed in Ciudad Juarez, prosecutors filed 93 homicide cases and got 19 convictions.

Chihuahua’s judicial deficiencies go back years before the new system was implemented, or before drug-gang violence soared to unprecedented levels.

In the 1990s, hundreds of women were killed around Ciudad Juarez, with about 100 sexually assaulted and dumped in the desert.

I tell you what, if our own Fed will not protect our borders, then why not us? All it would take is a few thousand armed citizens who shoot first and ask questions later, to stop the flow of the unwashed masses! Then once we’ve sealed the border, hunt down the rest of the illegals and send them packing! I am tired of this BS! So we have 12+ million of them in our country, of those, how many do you think are terrorists? 180,000 maybe? Enough to do tremendous damage to all of us. I say hire us citizens and deputize them and we will take care of the border ourselves, the Fed won’t do it, nope, just look what they are doing to Arizona. I read many stories of illegals getting drunk and/or high and driving vehicles that have killed many innocent US citizens, in their own communities. Then the half baked ‘sanctuary cities’ protect them as a US citizen, this is crazy town! Not only that, they rob, steal, burglerize and sell drugs to our kids! This raping of America HAS TO STOP!

I agree with you, Sgt. Crust. I remember a few years ago I decided to work at a grocery store during the Christmas season to make extra money, and at least half of the people coming thru my line were illegals, all of whom had *U.S. GOVERNMENT ISSUED* food stamp cards!!! It made me sick. I mean, these people are here ILLEGALLY, don’t have any intentions of learning English, paying taxes, or respecting our laws, and we are giving them free assistance?!! This is what the taxes taken out of my paycheck are paying for?!!
People give me dirty looks sometimes because of my last name (and because I don’t speak Spanish), but I quickly point out to them that my grandfather’s family came to the U.S. in the very early 1900′s from Spain, LEGALLY, and he was born on U.S. soil a few years later. My grandfather served 35 years in the Army Air Corp./Air Force, was raised knowing only the English language (when your family comes here legally, they have to learn at least *some* English before becoming citizens), was fully educated, paid taxes his whole life, and NEVER did anything to get in trouble with the law.
If we would quit giving these illegals handouts, maybe the U.S. wouldn’t be as attractive anymore. As far as the illegal population spreading, it is. I live in the upper mid-west, and the numbers are growing by the day. I personally have chased off numerous gangs for trying to “mark their territory” when they get here by spray painting their “symbols” and setting fire to all the homes on the outskirts of thier territory. My brothers are policemen and firefighters, and they come home every day/night with sickening stories of what these crazy illegals are doing. It’s gotta end!

This is a perfect example of what happens when a country makes guns illegal. It has only been around 30 years since guns were made illegal in Mexico, and as everyone in the world can see, it has worked out wonderfully.

I have also heard that the innocent people of Mexico are machining there own weapons (assault rifles) in Mexico, so they can defend themselves against these drug cartel losers.

It is only a matter of time before the US starts launching GPS controlled missiles into these drug cartels.

It sure is a good thing that Mexico has outlawed guns. You can see how well it is working out. Fortunately, I have heard that people are starting to machine their own assault rifles so they can defend themselves against these low life scum bags.

Dear Walk with me 1966, the year is 2010, I live in Texas, we have a border sheriff advising his county to stay armed, people cannot walk down their own road to enjoy the outdoors, human coyotes, herding human mules are packing with AK’s and SKS, they shoot at homeowners, ranch workers, school buses, fishermen/women, Falcon Lake is a ghost town, many fishermen will not fish it ever again, people who have ranches are in compounds now, with concertina wire surrounding the encampment, they are finding their livestock slaughtered in the pastures, literal tons of human waste of every ilk, the occasional human slaughtered as well. When are you brain &*%^$*@g dead liberal communists going to get the big picture? We are at the doorstep of complete meltdown, in Texas we have a phrase, it goes like this “do you have the four G’s?, God, Groceries, Gasoline and Guns” this is what it is like in a border state, you just will not hear about it on the evening news!

Given a chance these clowns will do the same here. Although many times worse in the border states, we are seeing the start of them creeping in across the country. I am sick and tired of being accused of being some kind of racist for advocating the securing of our borders. As for the pitiful argument that Americans who are more interested in securing our southern borders then the northern ones are examples of American racism, I answer, which border do we have hundreds of thousands if not millions of illegal aliens sneaking in? When was the last time you heard of cities being worried about Canadian gangs on their streets? When was the last time that you have heard of illegal aliens from Canada committing crimes? I look at securing the borders as being similar to triage in a hospital emergency room. If a patient comes in with a sucking chest wound and a scraped elbow, which wound should the doctor work on first? For many liberals the answer is neither, there is nothing wrong with either.

I remember a house across from us had 5 or 6 illegals living there and on FRIDAY they would sit by the parking lot and get drunk than cat call to me and my daughter when we were going into our house..after we moved to another house in the city they neighbor rented again to 5 or 6 illegals who would sit outside everyday drinking and playing their music so loud we couldn’t hear our television.. Sundays were worse they would start early and go to all hours of the night with their families all joining in.. kids running the streets well into the night yelling with no respect for the neighbors who had to work.. Gang members chasing each other or Cops chasing them we had both our cars hit by hit and run drivers.. it was AWFUL..Now Quinn wants to raise taxes so he can give them MORE handouts..

Alright, this is like the third post I’ve seen referencing the DREAM Act to this story, so apparently a lot of people are making a connection here that really shouldn’t exist.

First of all, let‘s understand what we’re talking about. These are Mexican drug cartels, not immigrants in the US. Most people immigrating to the US through Mexico, even illegally, are not members of drug cartels nor are they associated with drug cartels. Most are primarily seeking economic opportunity for themselves and their families. Are there some drug cartel members who are entering the country illegally? Almost certainly. Are there some drug cartel members who are entering the country legally? Almost certainly. But the fact is, they’re doing it to push their drugs onto another seller and then get back to their operation in Mexico, they’re not looking to start a new life here.

But let’s extrapolate this out a bit: let‘s pretend for a moment you’re an immigrant kid in a border town. You’re living in the United States, and you and your family are here illegally. Let‘s even say there’s a danger that you might end up becoming a member of some American-operating drug gang (immigrant, non-immigrant, whatever – doesn’t matter for this thought exercise.)

Now – status quo, your options are limited. You can’t get assistance for a college education, or in many cases attend school at all. You can’t work because you have illegal status in the country. You always have to be in hiding, and if something bad were to happen to you or your family you can‘t rely on the police or the local hospital because you’re concerned about repercussions and deportation. With all this in mind, joining some gang probably looks pretty good to you. The gang will offer you protection, employment, and purpose in life – as terrible a price as you’ll have to pay.

Here’s the other option however – the DREAM Act. The DREAM Act allows these children of immigrant families a shot at citizenship should they complete at least two years of college or military service. So they go to college – they get an education, start a career, can assist their family, and have citizenship so they can take part in the American community. Or maybe they join the military – it‘s an option I’m sure many of you took as youth that has many similar benefits – education, learn discipline, serve your country, get paid, etc.

The youth in the second option is far less likely to look at crime as an enticing life option, and far more likely to become an established, productive, and happy member of American society. I posit that the DREAM Act will reduce crime, not increase it.

Now for some reality. Your poor little ILLEGAL immigrant should be hiding and not expect a damned thing from this country. If it’s so bad here that he has to become a gang banger, then he should go back home. In the meantime, his ilk have devastated the contstruction industry in my area and WOOHOO, we are the No.1 city for bedbug infestation, And its no coincedence that tuberculosous, virtutally wiped out in this country at one time, is back with a vengeance. Just watch the majority of the activists as they march down OUR streats demanding our hard earned money. What are they chanting? They dont care about getting a chance to start a new life here, they threaten that they will “take it back”. @INDEPENDENTVOTERIL

“theres a FEW thing you forgot to mention here but lets go with this BIG fact ONCE a illegal becomes a citizen they can bring over their WHOLE family left behind in MEXICO..”

I didn’t mention it because it’s not true. Once an “illegal” becomes a citizen, you are allowed to apply for visas for your spouse and any minor children. The application takes about 5 years to process and during this time your family cannot live/work in the US. Fairly standard. Besides – this law is primarily designed for children and young adults, who likely don’t have spouses/children anyway, and if they do they’re probably American citizens since the immigrant-citizen in question has been living here since childhood.

“there are many other such problems with this DREAM ACT such as the fairness to CITIZENS who have children.”

This does not effect the children of citizens in any way.

“the fact it goes up to 30 years old..”

True, but again, you have to have come to the US before the age of 16 and be able to prove residency in the US since that move (you can’t have been brought here and then immediately gone back to your origin nation.)

      @PERASLAX

“Your assumption that they even want to integrate is flat out wrong.”

On what grounds? This is the same argument that’s been made of immigrants of every stripe since the US was founded. It’s not a secret that first-generation immigrants tend not to integrate well, but second-generation (ie, their children, the ones effected by this law) tend to integrate extremely well and by the third-generation they’re virtually indistinguishable from their peers.

Integration certainly won’t happen if they continue to be ostracized, which is exactly what this law is trying to prevent.

“My wife was sideswiped by an illegal who didnt even have a liscense, let alone insurance and luckily a witness got his plate number as he didnt even slow down”

That’s tragic, and I hope your wife is alright, but that could have just as easily been an American citizen. If immigrants weren’t always afraid of being deported, they might be more likely to report these incidents to the police. Of course, that’s no excuse for this individual’s behavior, I just wanted to make a note of another example of how continuing to treat these people as outsiders and rejects causes more problems than it solves.

“So take those rosey glasses off bud and actually get out there where you have to interact with them and you will change your tune.”

We have a lot of immigrant families in my town, and it’s exactly my experiences with them that give me these “rosy glasses.” They even held a rally this summer, and marched downtown. Hundreds of them, all waving American flags. I don‘t think ’they‘ are us different from ’us’ as we are often led to believe.

“But the reality in the street is Big bucks hanging with their Homies or small bucks working for the man. Most will choose the big bucks over the small bucks.”

But that level of allure for crime/work is the same for everyone. By that logic, why wouldn’t I join a gang? Maybe it is good money – but I’d rather use the opportunities available to me and help rather than harm. Besides – the DREAM Act entails a clause that allows that citizenship to be repealed should the individual be charged with a criminal offense (aside from minor things, like parking violations, etc.) during their 6 year period of naturalization.

      @TEXASFARMER

Well that’s exactly it, right? As an American citizen (third-generation, grandparents were immigrants) I have access to education, job opportunities, etc. Because of these opportunities, I see absolutely no reason to take up crime (beyond the obvious moral implications.)

People without legal opportunities are always going to see more value in the illegal ones. The point is, if it‘s crime we’re trying to reduce, opening up these opportunities for people helps reduce their inclination towards a criminal life.

No, I’m suggesting that a reduction in these populations turning towards crime is just a good outcome of the policy. We should do it because millions of young people in this country are classified as “illegals” for actions of their parents over which they have no control, who in many cases cannot even identify culturally with their home country after growing up in America, and are essentially resigned to being a permanent underclass when they could become productive members of society and contribute their talents to the United States as a whole.

On what grounds? You can say with a straight face that my argument was used with every immigration ethnicity since we started? Ok, then, name for me, please, the immigrant ethnicity that came to this country by the millions illegally and was integrated by the third generation. Name for me any other set of immigrants who’s loudest voice is called LA RAZA and who demands bi lingual education and government printing, signs, pamphlets, you name it. And who’s spokesmen declaired they would get all the land back that Mexico lost to us. Name for me the group that demanded kids in high school be sent home because they had the audacity to wear an american flag shirt or who had a flag on his bike,This has NEVER happened before and it’s disingenuous to claim this is anything like what happened in our past. Remember, during the last major immigration influx (and Im not counting the Veitnamese because that was a pittance and the least we could do after our government turned our backs on them) there was no such thing as “the safety net”. They came and experienced hardships and Im sure a lot of prejudice, but they knew they had to buckle down and work their butts off or starve. And for the most part they were grateful for the chance to come to this country and do it. I’m sure they were octricized and back then, the law just looked the other way a lot. But the difference was, they were LEGAL and had no fear of being deported if they stood out. They didn’t use our emergency rooms for their family Dr. They didnt flood our schools with their anchor babies and turn around and demand their kids be taught in their language. If they are being octricized, and for the most part they arent, at least here anyway, it is because they are BREAKING THE LAW. Sorry bout the caps but man, name any other person race or what have you who knowingly breaks the law and is given such forgiveness and understanding. And dont even say its a victimless crime,Jjust ask a laid off carpenter or maintenance worker around here how victimless it is.
Now to my wife’s accident, Sure it cound have just as easily been a citizen, but it wasnt. Bottom line, if the government was enforcing the laws of the land, my wife’s arm wouldnt have been broken in three places. It’s bad enough to have something bad happen to you, but it makes it all the more hurtfull when you think “That guy shouldnt even be here”. Just dont use that poor excuse on some person who actually lost a loved one to an illegal, that would be too cruel and you dont come off as the cruel type. Just a guy that wants to do the right thing but is just vaguely aware of just how much this immigration problem is costing the counrty and who’s livelyhood is fairly safe from, being taken away by an illegal.

Better Red. Did you not read the text that stated that this woman was being protected from afar by security forces. you must have missed that, HUH? The illegals send 25 billion U.S. dollars across the border to Mexico every year. The drug profits that go back across are astronomlcal and are not included in that 25 billion. The D.E.A. is reporting that marihuana is being grown on park land by Mexican drug traffickers. We are being occupied by a foriegn army of criminal thugs. We do not need to declare war on Mexico but we do need to secure OUR border. The Mexican government is complcit in the actions of these drug gangs in that they operate with no restrictions in most parts of their country.

This is a continuing tragedy in mexico and has spilled over the border in Arizona and Texas. I live 40 miles from the border in the Big Bend of Texas and I legally carry weapons where ever I go and am lock and loaded on my property.

The border needs to be shut down from the United States side. The Mexican authorities have lost control of their country and will not get back control until the cartels are weakened. If the US shuts the border down all flow of drugs and profits will cease. Including any guns and cash going south.
There is no other solution that would work so quickly. If we control the flow of people across the border we would be able to allow law abiding people to continue to cross the border.

@WALKWITHME- Invitation is open to you to come on down to Texas. I guarantee you will be packing before you even get here. — There are political reasons why there is not more publicized about the violence. Also, when the Feds do an investigation, it often does not get reported as it would with the local police. Look up home invasions and murders in any Texas town and then notice who is in custody. You can see the problems are real and very scarey.

One case a couple of months ago: just look what they got on the highway. Gruesome? Yeah- they failed to mention the guy was beheaded. They covered this one up good. Never heard too much else about it. Also, it was NOT a routine traffic stop. just FYI.

@WALKWITHME1966 So you want to hear from someone in a border state, because you don’t feel that TOWER7FEMACAMP has a right to comment? I live here in TX, and I can say that his advice is spot on. Due to the treasonous behavior by our government, in many places here on the border, life is becoming very cheap. Crime and violence has become the rule, rather than the exception. The truly sad part is that as our Communist masters further their plans to dismember our great nation, what we see here regularly, will soon become much more widespread throughout this country. As peoples ability to earn a fair wage, feed their families and personal freedoms decrease, violence and misery will increase. The advice to “prepare” is very wise, because those who don’t, will simply become the convenient victims for those whose plan for future strife will consist of forcibly taking what others have.
I, in no way want to promote violence as a convenient solution, but the simple fact is, that there are many people out there who cannot be reasoned with, because they exist free from any sense of value for other peoples lives. These are the kind that must be met with force as the only viable option.

walkwithme1966 – I have a family member who lives in Arizona. She is as far left politically as you can get – except for one issue: illegal immigration.

They have described increased taxes, increased crime, and overwhelmed social services. Ranchers have been murdered, illegal squaters on private property – which cannot be evicted. Narco-terrorists like MS-13, the Latin Kings, etc., are striking across the border and kidnapping US teens out of high schools and holding them ransom, or murdering them to strike fear into the locals…in America.

Now, you’ve heard from broder citizens.

Bet it still won’t change your mind.

Mexico is in the midst of revolution by Narco-Anarchists. American citizens are now only subsidizing non-citizen healthcare, social-security, medicare, medicade, foodstamps, WIC – we are allowing armed Mexican gangs to target them – in this country.

We need more than legislation – we need troops stationed in Mexico with orders to shoot-to-kill.

Why is an illegal guilty, of a violent crime in the US allowed to live. KEY WORD ILLEGAL., they are not protected under our laws. Go to Mexico, or any other country and commit a crime.
