Video Captures Shock Decision by Argentina’s Worst Mother

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — A woman’s bid to avoid paying a train fare nearly cost her the life of her daughter.
A girl is miraculously alive in Argentina after her mother lowered her onto the tracks just as a train was coming into the station, according to surveillance video.
Video released Friday by the commuter rail operator shows the woman guiding the child underneath the platform, apparently trying to hide from ticket collectors. The woman appears set to join the child hiding under the platform when suddenly she sees the train approaching.
The woman scrambles back up onto the platform, but her daughter remains below, the video shows.
As the train comes to a stop, the woman bends over and peers into the gap between the train and platform, apparently checking for the girl. Other commuters who witnessed the scene cluster around.
“We quickly cut the electrical current to avoid any accident,” said manager Guillermo D’Abenigno of Buenos Aires Trains, or TBA for its initials in Spanish.
“You couldn’t hear anything. We feared the worst — that the girl was dead, torn to pieces under the train,” he added.
TBA workers ultimately were able to crawl underneath the platform where they found the girl terrified but unharmed, safely ensconced inside a tiny nook.
“It was a mishap with a little luck,” D’Abenigno said.
The incident took place Tuesday but came to light Friday with the release of the video.
Authorities have not given any identifying details on the mother or the daughter, who appears to be a toddler or slightly older. It was not immediately known if the mother would face charges.
D’Abenigno said people commonly do “all kinds of things to get out of paying the fare.”

Would she have done what she had done if she could afford the ticket? Possibly. We can‘t just go leaping to conclusions but we cannot let our sense of right and wrong go out the window just because Argentina’s economy is worse off than our own. Yes, the child should be taken away, possibly for a very long time.

To me, that tells me the lady was so desperate to avoid being caught by security that she would endanger her life and her child. Why would someone be so desperate to avoid security?

If the mother had been torn to pieces by the train I wouldn’t care much, but for her daughter to die because of her mothers incredible stupidity bothers me greatly. To Ironman – Here in the States, the mother’s actions would probably fall into the “reckless endangerment” category and the child would be removed from the mother’s care. It wouldn’t be a brush off the gravel and “Here’s your little girl, lady. Have a nice day.” routine. And because it was the mother who put the child there, I could heartily endorse the authorities for removing the child.
But at the same time, care has to be taken that the Family and Children Service workers don’t overstep their bounds. Some years ago, there was a case in a near by town where the social worker was called in because a special needs child was being home schooled and the school authorities felt that the student’s handwriting was “immature”. The parent, in that case, was an accredited teacher with a certificate and the student had some fine motor skill issues that were being addressed. Social Services wanted to remove the child from the home based on the child’s handwriting. No abuse, no neglect, no endangerment. That’s the kind of thing where the Family and Child Services overstep.

This indeed is where a parent should be investigated thourly by the courts for the benefit of the child; I for one am glad to see no harm has come to the little girl, it could have been much more worse off for everyone there indeed.

Agree as well, this should in the states at the least fall under ‘reckless endangerment’ for the mother. Also, the case you mention about the Family and Childrens services wanting to take the one child away over his handwriting, even when the mother is a accredited teacher and his disability is documented medically – I have heard of too many times the government, states and federal looking to score points and intervine at the drop of a hat.

Report Post »I agree wholeheartedly, I know a family who would let their toddler sit on the kitchen counter while the mom was preparing the meal. When the mom wasn’t looking the toddler fell off and hit his head. The parents rushed the child to the emergency room (the child only had a bump on the head, but they were young parents) and the hospital reported them to CPS and the family were put through heck for months.
The government does overstep its boundries but I would love to see some responsible government interferance on this case.
