Swiss adventurer Yves Rossy, otherwise known as “Jetman,” took to the skies recently to fly in formation with two jet planes over the Swiss Alps.
The aerobatic display took place alongside two L-39C Albatros planes using Rossy’s custom-made jet-propelled wingsuit.

Rossy, 52, has previously executed amazing mid-air loop-the-loop maneuvers and flown over the Grand Canyon. He is the only man in aviation history to complete such stunts.

Posted on November 26, 2011 at 10:44amMaybe a aviation buff could answer a question. Seeing as the two jets with him are “private” or corporate owned..Just guessing on the make around a f4 era …Can you privately own one in this country ?…Just wondering …

Posted on November 26, 2011 at 11:04amI’m not sure what is entailed, but about a decade ago I knew a local guy who owned a fully operational(sans weaponry) Mig 17. He flew it at numerous airshows and on several occasions locally. It became prohibitively expensive to operate and maintain and I think it ended up in a museum somewhere.

Posted on November 26, 2011 at 11:14amThe FAA regulations don’t say that you cant but, you obviously wouldn’t be able to have side winder misles on your plane. If you have a couple million just sitting around go to Syria to get an F4 and have some fun.

Also, USC Title 14 would be an ‘interesting’ read on the subject.

Posted on November 26, 2011 at 12:35pmOf course you can own a military aircraft. Now, as to whether you can operate it, and live. That is a completely different question. There are a number of factors that can affect your survival.
Are you good at reading foreign languages, because that is what many of your operating manuals will be written in. There are no, “Operating L-19′s For Dummies”. The same goes for maintenance manuals. Can you get parts for these things? NAPA doesn’t carry most of them.
Do you have the disposable income of some third world countries? 15 years ago I had an offer on some soviet block jets that was quite reasonable. However, I knew of no mechanics that knew anything about the care and feeding of the beasts. I had no interest in importing the talent to keep them running.
Finally, even if everything works on these aircraft, are you good enough to fly them? You’re not going to be able to go to FlightSafety to get typed, because you’re operating beyond the boundries of know space when it comes to an aviation knowledge base. I had a guy about 30 miles north of me that figured he could drive one without the proper training. He ended up in the bottom of a crater (the rest of the aircraft came down over a wide area). Unfortunately, he took an innocent with him when he terminated their existence. Unforgivable.
Just because you can afford to fly one, doesn’t mean you should.

Posted on November 26, 2011 at 2:37pmYes , if you can afford to run and maintain it(un-armed of course).

Posted on November 26, 2011 at 2:57pmThe two jets pictured were built in the 1990s. This is a modern jet trainer with a totally modular glass instrument panel. They are equipped with two turbo fan engines which are quite efficient but fuel for this aircraft is $10/gallon for JP-5. Being that this aircraft isn‘t a relic out of the 60’s it’s really too complex for your average guy to work on. You can purchase one here in the US for around $300,000, pretty spendy for a two seater. As far as weather these aircraft are privately owned or not isn’t really a matter of the cost of owning one of these. Miley Cyrus, an 18 year old pop singer is said to have amassed around a billion dollars. Definitely with in her budget!

Posted on November 26, 2011 at 5:16pmThere are several companies that are building fighter like private aircraft, and because they use non military parts are much easier to maintain, the one I’ve seen on Discovery Channel look similar to an A4, two seater. I think they said for somewhere around 3/4 of million. Not sure if it’s available yet.

Posted on November 26, 2011 at 10:46pmI once met a guy who lives and works out of Florida. His company retro fits old F4s with hydrolic actuators and such to make them fully remote control. The military uses them for real life target practice!

High Flight
by John Gillespie Magee, Jr.
Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
Report Post »And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds…and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of…wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up, the long, delirious burning blue
I’ve topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, nor even eagle flew.
And while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space…
…put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Posted on November 26, 2011 at 11:00amIt’s as stupid as wearing seat belts on a plane. Is that so they can identify your shattered, splattered remains? Or do people actually think that they are safe because they are wearing their seat belts? Yeah! OK!
Report Post »mcmxl22
Posted on November 26, 2011 at 12:35pmI know they don’t do anything for a crash but being in a seat belt on a plane will prevent you form smashing into the ceiling during bad turbulence. I have family members who can speak from experience.

If you want to fly, contact a local airport, small one, not international, and set up an exploratory flight. Costs about $50. You get to handle the controls and everything, but a certified instructor is right next to you the whole time. Enjoy!
