Video of TSA Giving Patdown to Boy in Body Cast and Wheelchair Goes Viral

We’ve seen them before: videos of the TSA giving patdowns to young children going through airport security lines. And almost every time, the videos go viral. Add another one to the list.

The latest video shows a young boy who apparently has broken his leg being chosen for extra screening. As he sits in a wheelchair and a body cast, a male TSA agent pats down the boy’s cast and swabs the boy and his wheelchair for explosive residue. As the agent talks soothingly to the boy, the boy’s father records the screening:

While the TSA agent, the boy, and the boy’s father remain calm, the father let his thoughts know by writing irate captions on the video:

So what do we know about the video? Not much beyond what it says. According to YouTube, it was uploaded on Saturday, March 17. The video’s description says the screening happened while on a family trip to Disney:

A toddler in a wheelchair is stopped by the TSA at ORD (O’Hare Airport in Chicago) and forced to into a sequestered area. On his way to a family vacation in Disney, this 3 year old boy is in a body cast for a broken leg. Despite assurances from his father that “everything is ok”, he is physically trembling with fear while he watches his two siblings, mother, father, grandfather and grandmother pass through along with everyone else…only to be singled out.

He simply does not understand what is happening and why.

That video description links to a website Mattdubiel.com and called Matt on Air. It‘s unclear if the man featured on the site is the boy’s father. The description of the blogger describes him as a Chicago radio personality:

Chicago Magazine featured Matt Dubiel in 2005 as one of the “pioneers of podcasting”. Fast Company Magazine called Matt Dubiel “one of social media’s NEW stars” and one of the top 1% of influential people on the internet! Matt’s tenure as a veteran radio programmer in Chicago has lead to press in Crains Chicago Business, Chicago Tribune, and the Huffington Post.

It features several videos from the YouTube channel that features the TSA video and the voice sounds familiar. A Google search reveals Dubiel is referred to as the general manger of radio station WJJG-AM 1530 in Chicago. Additionally, the Twitter account @mattonair — which also uses the name Matt Dubiel — features the same picture as the one on Mattdubiel.com:

It’s worth noting a few things with the latest video. It appears to show a screening that’s seemingly the result of the boy going through security in a large cast and a wheelchair. It does not appear he was randomly selected for additional screening. It also appears the TSA agent is calm, collected, and soothing. And finally, the video does not show if the father objected to any of the swabs or patdown or requested private screening. He may have have earlier, but we just don’t know from the video.

UPDATE:

The boy’s father has now admitted the video is two years old, raising questions about why he’s just coming forward now. The TSA has responded that the video was taken before new screening procedures were put in place.

    my son is the military and comes home once a year roughly for 3-4 weeks.my mom who’s almost 80 can barely walk always goes to airport to the gate so we can spend a few minutes more. so when we drop off mom at the door someone goes inside to get a wheel chair for her. last time what they did to my mom,my wife litterly had to hold my hand and keep me away from that JACKASS. i was this close to knocking his lights out. i know they have a job to do but come on an 80 year old MOM who can barely walk, probably the sweetest person in the world and to be treated that way…beyong gross and sickness and absurd…….

      My last few travels for business I got the pat down and asked for a cigarette after the unsolicited “sex”…They did not laugh. Well, being the protective father I am, I opted to drive 1000 miles to Disney this year. Saved $1800, saved jail time for being a protective father and had a great time of bonding on the drive there.

      However, I missed out on some real good “rub downs”….who pays for my “protection”?

      But if they only pull Middle Eastern men, they’re profiling…can’t have that. So they “look at the threat potential.” What happened to the threat that middle eastern women were going to put explosives in breast implants? Are they pulling out big busted middle eastern women for private screenings? No, that would be profiling. But we can pull out everyone in a wheel chair (as long as they’re not middle eastern), we can search through black women‘s hair because it’s puffy, we can strip search 80 year old women because they don’t want their pacemaker to go off and kill them in that stupid machine, we can force breast feeding mother to pump in a public restroom, we can force mastectomy patients to show their prosthetic (which is SILICONE, and therefore transparent as flesh).       You guys do realize it’s not the 3 year old child in a cast, or in your case an 80 year old mother who are the concern. You do realize that our terroristic islamist …..i’m sorry, extremely non-violent religiously anonymously friends utilize people such as these to transport the issue. Or use the people themselves to blow somethin up. Wheelchairs, casts and the like are easily customized to to fit anything they wish into them to smuggle them past. TSA is doing what is needed for your’s and my very own safety in the matter. This is one case in which it’s justified. If you have an issue with it….take a trip to the middle east sometime and watch an amubalance be used to blow people up…because after all it’s an ambulance right? Think about the big picture before you speak like a liberal.

      @shupp – you are an idiot. No 3 year old, traveling with siblings, mother, father, and grandparents is a security threat. Can wheelchairs be used to hide something? Sure – lets look at people who may be traveling this way and have an ounce of suspicion.
      If you need this type of harassment to feel “safe”, that is fine. Ordinary people such as myself would choose another type of airport, airline, etc. that is checking people well enough to satisfy any safety concern that I may have. Unfortunately, the government does not allow private business to give me this type of choice and forces these unlawful searches down my throat anytime I want to fly somewhere.
      Let the airlines and airports decide how to handle this best. The airlines have the most to lose if one of their planes is bombed, so let them decide the best method for keeping us safe, and I will take their alternative (and my choice in the matter) any day over government intervention.

      my first reaction is that this was completely unnecessary. then i recall many of the stories ive read over the past few years of people using their kids to smuggle drugs. i recognize that it is a very small percentage of people that have done this but unfortunately they have set a precedent that now needs to be looked out for.

      I think you will see more and more of this idiocy. It is possible this is another way to keep people focussed on this stuff rather than B.O.s record as president. We should profile profile profile! If terrorist are middle aged bald white men then i would expect to be singled out for closer scrutiny.
      This is just proof of how SICK some government officials and the T.S.A. are. Where are all the liberals out there who are so worried about our childrens mental health. Isnt that why they say scores shouldnt be kept in children sports and that all children should get trophies regardless of their accomplishments or the lack of?       Our constitution guarantees us free travel within the US without being subject to illegal search and seizure…

      My son has had this happen several times, as he has been to the Portland Shriners’ Hospital. Yes, they’re very soothing. TSA singled out my son every time he was in a cast. Y’know, I don‘t think I’ve ever heard of any little (white) boy or girl using expolosive powder in their casts. TSA cannot go away too soon!

      i am all for legalization and regulation of drugs in the manner we regulate tobacco and alcohol. people that use, not abuse, and are able to peacefully and productively live their lives should not have their rights trampled on. we need to recognize who the abusers are (people who neglect their kids in order to do dope, dont work and commit crimes to support their habits) and get them the help they need.

      however under the current laws we cant have any sanity. people use kids to smuggle drugs and not necessarily large ammounts for distribution. they aren’t hindering your ability to travel, that is an exaggeration but i do agree that the screenings are a bit much.

      I agree with you. I would have left immediately with my child. Being an abused-child…without an explanation….it took me until my 40′s to know that “it wasn’t my fault”. Kids think different than adults..Duh! I am not going into a long statement (whew..say a few of you)..Not taking my child to Disneyland will not put him in years of therapy..but letting “a stranger” do that and me as a parent saying to my child what was said to comfort the child is “worse” than what the agency did to this boy. I would slap the parent before I would slap the employee. I wasn’t protected as a child..but I EXPECT OTHER PARENTS to protect your children!

    Poor baby! This makes me want to cry. As a mother of four and a preschool teacher, I know how confusing and scary this must be for this little boy.
    Kids look to their parents for how to react, so thank goodness this father had enough sense to stay calm.

    A scared little boy, and a kind screener, and a ticked off dad. People wanted “something” done post 9/11, and this is what we got. Profiling is the way to go, and it’s time to stop worrying about feelings and do what is right. They have not caught one person for the millions spent, but they have computers keeping track of conversations, purchases, etc. Insanity.

    I cannot describe the rage I feel watching this video. The nudges are quickly turning into shoves with this crap. I am actually shaking just typing this comment. America is dead folks. The great American experiment has failed and it took less than 250 years.

    Many won’t fly, the government controls movement; many fly, the government let’s you know they control that privilege; we all pay never-ending tax schemes; the government controls our property, we can’t start a business without government permission, the government controls innovation; we die, the government punishes us for doing that by taking half the estate we hoped to leave to our children.       I’m glad to see I am not the only one shaking and I feel sick to my stomach watching this. But you know what? I’m not sure who I am most irate about. The people taking the job of TSA and actually carrying out this illegal act, or the parents for actually forcing their own children to comply. The kids do not have a choice and will do what the parents say in this situation. This is not a doctors office and NO child should ever be instructed to allow ANYONE to touch them like this. The boy obviously knew this should not be happening and that the adult doing this to him was not acting normally toward him in a way that was violating him either in that he did something wrong or that he was being “touched” in ways that he should run away from and report to his parents or other trusting adult!! He certainly expected his dad to be protecting him and dad was not allowed. And at the very least, his dad should have repeatedly told the boy throughout this process that it is ONLY ok when mom or dad are with you and tell you it is ok. Yea, shame on the government for ordering this crap done on it’s own people. But WAY bigger SHAME ON YOU to the parents! As for EVERY American citizen – DO NOT COMPLY!!

    This makes me so angry that I want to cry. What kind of person would willingly do this to a child in the name of protecting America? What level of of “only following orders” will a person like this reach?
    Will a person who can do this sleep well after he “soothingly” prepares a person for imprisonment or execution because of those orders?

    Thay aren’t training us, they are training the next generation of death camp guards.

      Keep in mind that mom and dad knew this kind of thing was possible.

      Folks keep willingly giving up liberty for convenience, and these are the results. This would all stop immediately if every passenger they tried this crap on refused to comply. We could easily overwhelm their system (using their tactics on them, if you will).

      I’m in, been begging God to forgive our country for falling away from Him by our reps passing laws so counter to His teachings and calling right, wrong, and wrong, right. Been begging Him to hear the prayers of those who still love and honor Him, and are gratefull to live here. Been begging personal forgiveness for my errors in sitting back and not fighting harder against evil because I was scared. Been begging for courage to do all I can to turn back the evil happening around us and our freedoms slipping away quickly. Been begging to keep our country free so my children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren can be free. Give me times and dates, I’ll join any group praying for this country-on top of my daily begging.
