Video Pop Quiz: Do Hipsters in Brooklyn Know What the ‘God Particle’ Is? Their Answers Will Have You Laughing

Do you know what the Higgs boson is? Does it jog your memory if we identify it as the “God particle”?

There was what the scientific community would consider a rather important announcement regarding the theoretical particle this week, so it might be a safe assumption that many people have at least heard the term “Higgs boson,” right?

(Related: ‘A very, very preliminary result’: CERN scientists tentatively ‘find’ infamous God particle)

The website Motherboard wanted to know just how many people could guess what the Higgs boson was in Brooklyn. Its interns took to the streets to film the answers from many people it identifies as “hipsters.”

Man on the Street Pop Quiz Reveals Hipsters Best Guess at What Is the Higgs Boson?

(Image: YouTube screenshot)

Here are a few of their answers:

  • “A building, maybe?”
  • “Is that, like, an animal.”
  • “Is it a piece of art?”
  • “A famous, German entrepreneur.”
  • “Some sort of creepy European man that goes around flashing people.”
  • “…it might be something cool.”

Watch the “Hipster Pop Quiz” (Content Warning: Some strong language):

Out of all the people interviewed, only two got it right. The best answer: “It’s that little particle they discovered in that hadron collider.” How did this responder know about the particle? “I read the news,” she said.

As the Motherboard puts it “the results are a bit of a bummer,“ but it remains optimistic that ”maybe things will be different by Monay, when the news has reached full Higgs saturation, and everyone around the world will know what it is.”

To help explain the Higgs boson — a subatomic particle that is expected to provide fundamental answers as to how our universe, as we know it, formed — watch this a simple explanation from “Minute Physics”:

Isn’t the LHC a CONTROLLED experiment? Was the LHC created by chance over ions of time?

      Of course not.

      1) The supercollider took hundreds of man hours to build.
      2) It cost over 8 billion dollars to produce.
      3) It was built in collaboration with over 10,000 scientists and engineers from over 100 countries, as well as hundreds of universities and laboratories.
      3) It requires hundreds of computers, and
      4) some 2,000 scientists to operate.

And yet after all of this coordination, we’re expected to believe that the first event all happened by random chance?

      Talk about blind faith!

If God is real (and I believe it is), there should not be any reason why science cannot discover its existence. God referred to itself as “I am what is” or God is the basis of everything. That is why the force that is holding everything together is called the “God particle.” You may be more comfortable calling it the Universe, the Source, the Force (as in Star Wars) or universal consciousness but the fact is that it exists, it creates and sustains life and it connects everything together. Call it Science or call it Religion. It is real.

Yup ! That is because it was a Brit Professor Higgs who first theorized that such a particle with TWO (“core elements” if you will) MUST exist …. hence the name : the Higgs Bosun ….. the problem has been to actually identify the little sod …… well now they think that they have actually done it.

S & D is a hypotesis. In order to become a theory it requires testing.

The bible isn’t based in theory either. It is man’s religious written account covering a spec of human history. It discusses many ideas, a few hypothesis’s, but zero theories.

I will never understand why people see it as such as stretch to reconcile science and God. They barely, if ever, cross over. Even the “controversial” theory of evolution leaves room for God in so-called random chance. Who‘s to say the odds weren’t bent by the Creator to serve His will? (and the part where the things able to evolve, you know, were created. Even if they started as tiny little particles ^.^)

@ dtbox – You’re hilarious. How smart did you feel after posting that, or is it old? Not the same thing, So because you don‘t understand how quantum theory can be as amazing as it is without your idea of what ’god’ should be, you insert your opinion of what ‘god’ should be into every ignorant hole in your knowledge base. If it were not for scientist studying the way the universe works, instead of praying to the heavens, humanity would still be stuck in the dark ages, for better or worse. Every human culture has had aspects of nature they don’t understand, fundamentally fear, who then interpolates some ‘divine’ force as the driving behavior. What makes you think the bible is actually ‘gods’ word? Because the bible said so? By my account, your god loved his creation so much that he keeps trying to kill them off, such disappointing wretches, always thinking for themselves and disobeying all my DIVINE commands. LOL The amazing mysteries of the quantum world are a far brighter star than the ‘miracles’ of Christianities pale and hollow light. Keep praying for rain, Good day Junior.

Simply put, Higgs boson is the stuff that holds things together.

The Higgs boson theory – proposed by British physicist Peter Higgs in the 1960s – suggests the existence of an invisible force field and associated sub-atomic particle that permeates all things, working like glue to give form to stars, planets and even humans.

Please cite your sources. I‘ve taken many graduate level courses in both evolution and genetics and what you’re saying makes absolutely no sense. I asked my sister (a biological engineer who specializes in genetic mutations) about what you claim and she also said the same thing – not only does what you’re saying not make sense, it’s completely unfounded by any study anywhere.
I would genuinely find it interesting if what you’re saying is true but without any academic citation to back up your MAJOR claim about genetics, you’re just another person talking out of their @ss.
And when I say citation, mean peer-reviewed, academic citation from a reputable genetics-based publication. Please don’t link me to some religious website you read it on.

      @HI
Ok, let me break this down for you. What you’re referring to is an estimate of the most recent MATRILINEAL ancestor to all modern humans. This can be traced back between 100,000 and 200,000 years ago (1). The Y-chromosomal Adam is about half as old as this (2). If you have a elementary understanding of genetic lineage, you know that the most recent COMMON ancestor must have evolved much sooner than this. The most recent common ancestor is the most recent individual from which a specific population is directly descended. For humans, this can be traced back about 15,000 – 3,000 years.
The mitochondrial Adam & Eve are not the same thing as the most recent common ancestor, as you’re implying. In fact, if you actually knew what the “mitochondrial Eve” actually is, you wouldn‘t be critical of evolutionary theory because you’d know that it demonstrates directly the evolutionary history of our species.

Leave it to an athiest to fact check…

Scientific Theory: “A scientific theory is ”a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment.”Scientists create scientific theories from hypotheses that have been corroborated through the scientific method, then gather evidence to test their accuracy. As with all forms of scientific knowledge, scientific theories are inductive in nature and do not make apodictic propositions; instead, they aim for predictive and explanatory force.”
