Video Shows Egyptian Protesters Hurling Stones at Police Cars

Protesters and families of those injured and killed in February’s upheaval and ouster of Egyptian President Honsi Mubarak hurled stones at police cars outside a courthouse where a former government official is on trial. The protest comes in response to the postponement of the trail of Habib al-Adli, Mubarak’s former interior minister.
Mr. Adli and six of his senior aides were on trial in Cairo on charges of killing protesters in 18-day upheaval last February. Crowds already tense while waiting outside the courthouse became enraged and began hurling stones as news trickled out that the trial had been adjourned, for a second time, to the end of the July. Financial Times:
“‘These people want the execution of the killer,’ protesters chanted outside the criminal court, some carrying pictures of relatives killed by police during the revolt against Mr. Mubarak.
Mr. Aldi’s trial is seen as a test of the extent of change in Egypt in the wake of the revolt. Many fear there will be no break with the past until officials responsible for human rights violations are seen to have been punished. Some families outside the court house on sunday voice fears that Mr. Aldi and his co-defendants would avoid conviction and were being treated deferentially because of their former positions.”
Similar reactions ensued in May when Mr. Adli’s trial was first postponed. Mr. Adli had earlier been sentenced to 12 years in jail for financial corruption and abuse of power, but families of those deceased vow to continue demonstrations until the former interior minister stands trial for allegedly targeting protesters. Former President Muburak will go on trial at the beginning of August.
