Video: UC Davis Students Line Streets in Eerie, Silent Protest of University Chancellor

After University of California, Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi said Saturday she was launching a probe of the circumstances that led to campus police officers coating seated demonstrators with pepper spray the day before, students staged a silent protest, lining the streets and watching Katehi walk past them.

According to the Davis Enterprise, several hundred protesters had gathered outside the building where Katehi was scheduled to hold a press conference and demanded her resignation. She did not leave the building for several hours because the crowd was “perceived as hostile.” When she finally left, the protesters had lined the street outside and sat in total silence, arms interlocked, staring at her as she walked to her car.

They came, they protested, they were asked nicely to leave, they were told to leave, they were ordered, LAWFULLY, to leave. They were in violation of any of a number of ordinances dealing with LAWFUL assembly (the TEA party paid for its permits, these criminals don’t even bother applying), the least harmful method of dispersing crowds was used. i wish it had been CS gas, it’s a heck of a lot more effective and fun to watch.

Actually most of the Occupy organizers have acquired month-long permits.

Which is kinda silly when you think about it because the U.S. and State Constitutions already provides the permit to assemble in a peaceful manner.

I don’t agree with the protesters in the slightest as to the substance of their protest. That said, they have the absolute right to protest as long as they do so legally and don’t violate the rights of others in the process. I actually think that this was an innovative and effective way of “voicing” their opinion and in fact was the “loudest” way they could have done it.

I do not agree with the Occupy madness in any way, however I must say that this peaceful silent protest against the tuition hikes of the university was innovative and seemed well within the rights of the students. At least they are sincerely protesting for a legitimate cause in a seemingly legitimate way.

No tents, no crap’n on the sidewalks, no throwing stuff, yelling and screaming, no rapes…. peaceful protests are a constitutional right and done this way certainly set them apart, at least in my mind, from the other madness and insanity we are seeing elsewhere by a long shot.

I don’t know but I suspect she could make a case that this is harrasment or stalking. It is eerie and she obvioulsy has never been confronted by such a scene. Who has? Think she should have shook their hands each and everyone of them, or had pizza delivered or hey is Berkley maybe passed around a hooka. Anything to pop their self righteous, spoiled kid balloons. This will be an object lesson in how to be railroaded for anyone in a leadership position or anyonr trying to do the railroading.

I would speak up for the police, when they start doing their job.

All I see is people being allowed to break the law. I guarantee if that was the TEA Party violating the law, it would NOT have lasted 2 months or even one night.

The laws of this land should apply to everyone equally. Not to some of the people some of the time.

Nice MGS reference. La-li-lu-le-lo. But I must say the police did nothing wrong in pepper spraying those students who broke the law by setting up camp and not allowing officers through to take it down. It’s not like pepper spray will kill them, it hurts yes, but only for a period of time.

Sooo.. when does civil disobedience become criminal trespass? After they were warned to move their butts? How many times? Are the officers required to use brute force to remove them — in the middle of hundreds of demonstrating students — as opposed to warning them they will be peppe-sprayed?

It seems to me the officers performed their duty well and used the least amount of force necessary to remove the trespassers. JMO.

They PAY for the right to be on those premises! They PAY to be on campus and a lot of money too in the form of loans that they will be PAYING off for years. I don’t agree with many of the comments on this blog because so many of you are narrow minded anger filled ideologues who see pepper spraying students who are sitting down causing no problems as being not only a good thing but wildly entertaining. Yet your brains can not conceive of the same action being taken against you when it’s your turn to stand up against what the government decides is right for your lives. Absolute power corrupts absolutley and protesting peaceably against that corruption is not only our right but our duty as Americans. Right or wrong in our opinions we have a right and a duty to stand up for them. being pepper sprayed in the face when doing so on ground you paid dearly to stand on is wrong. Wake up, your freedoms are being engulfed by your ideology. First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out —
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out —
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out —
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me — and there was no one left to speak for me.

You are exactly right. If those officers had went in and laid hands on those students and even one had been injured everybody in America would have been calling for their job. These students were breaking the law, they were warned, and they were sprayed. The spray takes the fight out of them and allows the officers to use the minimal force necessary to effect an arrest. Nobody gets hurt. People need to stay off the police in these situations unless you have walked a mile in their shoes, because believe me when I tell you they are in a no win situation at these occupy events. Pepper spray is harmless to most people unless they have some type of breathing problem, and if you have a breathing problem and you get sprayed with pepper spray after being warned that you are going to be sprayed then you deserve whatever happens. Remember personal responsibility? It was pepper spray people, not agent orange.

Now you can take a loan out on anything and scream injustice because you are too lazy to pay it back. Sweet. We should all apply to UC Berk or Irvine and swamp them with paper work, then say nah, you keep it.
