Vilsack Again Claims Food Stamp ‘Stimulus’ Created Jobs Over Last 17 Months

Vilsack: Food Stamps Helped Job Growth Over Last 17 Months

Food stamps as “stimulus?” That is the assertion being made, yet again, by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. Vilsack, who stated that food stamps and SNAP — Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – have contributed to “job growth in the private sector for 17 consecutive months” and serve as a form of economic stimulus.

Vilsack made the same assertion on MSNBC Tuesday, alleging food stamps act as an immediate infusion of cash flow into the economy.

During the press conference where his most recent declaration on food stamps was made, Vilsack was asked to substantiate his argument that nutrition assistance programs created jobs and improved the economy.

“We’ve had job growth in the private sector for 17 consecutive months,” Vilsack declared.

CNSNews reports that Vilsack continued:

“If you think about what happens with a SNAP [Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program] dollar, it goes into the economy more quickly than any other dollar, if you will, because 97 percent of SNAP resources are expended by SNAP recipients within the first 30 days,” Vilsack said.

“When people are in a position to purchase more in a grocery store that means that something has to be shelved, stocked, and processed, and packaged, and trucked, and produced–all of which are jobs throughout the entire supply chain,” he said.

“I should point out, when you talk about the SNAP program or the food stamp program, you have to recognize that it’s also an economic stimulus,” Vilsack said then. “Every dollar of SNAP benefits generates $1.84 in the economy in terms of economic activity. If people are able to buy a little more in the grocery store, someone has to stock it, package it, shelve it, process it, ship it. All of those are jobs. It’s the most direct stimulus you can get in the economy during these tough times.”

Vilsack prefaced his analysis by stating that “over the course of the last two years…we have gained back 2 million [jobs] in the private sector–more than 2 million in the private sector–17 months in a row.”

“We’ve also seen manufacturing and processing have increases, the best increases we’ve seen in over a decade in that area of the economy,” Vilsack added.

CNS points out, however, that Vilsack failed to mention federal food stamp dollars are derived from taxes — tax dollars that could, perhaps, be put to better use where stimulating the economy is concerned.

    I’m unemployed… Is the Government and BHO trying to entice me to help to current economic situation by applying for a food stamp program? Maybe I should confer with Chris Matthews, Rachael Maddow and Ed Schultz before I embark on such a wonderful stimulus program?

      so robbery is also economic stimulus and job creation? if i steal from a store i have immediate accesses to the money to spread around and spend, and what ever i spend it on creates jobs for the people that stock ship and manufacture the things i buy with the stolen money?? am i wrong here or is that not what they are saying? take tax dollars from people under the threat of force and spread it around to be spent… .

      I guess these guys make no distinction between wealth creating and wealth transfer. The latter is what’s happening now. It’s amazing how these guys can view confiscation of money from A and giving it to B so B can buy from A as income for A. Especially when A will be taxed once again on the money that is returned to him, because it will be counted as “income” even though it was taken from him in the first place. Meanwhile, B gets the goods but pays no income tax. B also gets to vote. How nice for B.

      So drug-related violence stimulates the economy. Drug-addicts are known to infuse their stolen property to cash within 48 hours. Their victims require medical attention, resulting in employment for health care workers.

      When will this insanity end? This man is the perfect example of an educational system that is broken.

      Just consider the dis-incentive to be productive that subsidy inflicts. Like the drug-crime, the damage is way worse than any “apparent” upside.

      The “system” of welfare and foodstamps only encourages people to lie. I know, I went through it 16 years ago. I was honest and didn’t qualify. They asked how much money I had in my son’s piggy bank, if I had sold anything over the last year, etc. But I had a truck I was still making payments on, a rented house to live in and a minimum wage job. I was told if I sold my truck and quit my job, I’d qualify for assistence. We need to lower welfare payments and food stamp amounts each year until it become more lucrative to work than to sit at home and collect that check.

      Using that logic criminals are job creator because criminals commit crimes we need police,police needs car,uniforms,guns,electronic,stations to houses and process criminals. Because criminals break into homes we need security lights,security systems,fences ,guns,dogs, home repairs material,insurance,and repurchase of items stolen.
      Because criminals deal drugs we need needles,baggies,scales,rolling papers,bongs,pipes,stems,screens,lighters.guns,drug testing equipment,mental health professionals,rehad centers,hospitals and funeral homes.
      Because criminals steal cars we need new cars,car alarms,special etched glass,low jack systems,new stero equipment,and insurance.
      That’s just off the top of my head.
      Using their logic criminals can save the economy.

      It’s the same garbage with the minimum wage. My friends (many of them so liberal they make Obama look like Reagan) insist raising the minimum wage will help the poor. If that’s true… Can we make it $50/hour for 6 months and prove it one way or another once and for all?

      But it is not stealing when federal taxes are lowered are shifted to the poor and middle class sales taxes and state taxes to make up for a lack of money by the federal government?
      Oh but when taxes are lowered for the rich it stimulates the economy and we all benefit. We can see over the past 10 years what the Bush tax cut, primarly that went to the rich, did to stimulate the economy. If it wasn’t for the real estate economy, floating on mortgages given with loose guidelines, we would have had a recession in 2005.
      Tax cuts and programs that result in lower and saved dollars for the rich stimulates the economy by $1.00 of tax cut equaling 40 cents of economic stimulation. They don’t spend their money they have what they want, their rich.
      So what do they do with the rest? Put it in the bank?
      So that gives lending money you say? No, you don’t need them for that.
      The fed can make that appear and happen just as much as we need, we can see that happening now.
      For every $1.00 a poor and middle class person gets, thru a food stamp or tax cut, they spend $1.50. How, from adding credit card credit on top, because they have lots of things they want to buy–and if they have the money do.
      You are not stealing from the rich. They are paying their fair share in taxes. You are not paying for food stamps.
      The bottom 50% of americans pay no federal taxes, contrary to the right wing mind rapists have been raping you to believe. Who benefits most from a well stimulated econom

    Look I used all my food stamps and ate all my food. So I took a huge dump, which created at least two million jobs at the waste water treatment plant. I basically stimulated the economy.

    food satmps isn’t work. the hard working people of this country who buy food from thier own money is likely to buy as much food for themselves and thier families and a lazy man on welfare and food stamps. Yea, that creates jobs for the people who buy them on the street for 50% and the others that they take shopping, and get the cash for groceries and use the cash to buy CIGARETTES, LIQUOR AND BEER! Yes, that stimulates the economy. We need to cut out all these programs and get the congress to post ALL THE FREE GOVERNMENT GIVEAWAYS ONLINE. WHen you qualify for one program you get them ALL! It is like a FREE LOTTERY WIN! FREE FOOD, FREE HOUSING, FREE MONEY, FREE LUNCH, FREE MEDICAL CARE, FREE CELL PHONES, FREE HOUSE PHONES, FREE INTERNET, 1/2 OFF YOUR UTILITY BILL, FREE UNIFORMS, FREE SCHOOL SUPPLIES, FREE SHOES, ETC. That is just the ones that I personally know people are getting and they dont work at all or get cash off the books!!! A RACKET. THIS NEEDS TO BE STOPPED NOW!!!     Do you special needs citizens realize that food stamps, and entire reasoning behind their existence, are an economic welfare program not for the poor but for the immense multinational food corporations that control your diet and the diet of 90+% of the american people? There’s a reason food stamps are still around, and its not because the ACORN-army is ready to besiege Washington. ConAgra and Unilever and Altria and the rest would go bankrupt if the government didn’t allow some 70 million Americans to buy (through the SNAP program) the garbage they sell to us every second of every day. Know why? Because the rich can afford not to eat the food-like poison shoved down the throat of the average American worker each and every day. And they’re the only ones who can. That‘s why they’re at Whole Foods while you tea partiers eat 7-11 tacquitos and toast our so-called republic as it goes down in flames.

      FYI to Glennut: In Vilsack’s own state of Iowa the food stamp program was revamped to allow purchases at FARMERS MARKETS!!!! And after less than two years it was discontinued due to lack of use. The willing CAN eat healthy economically. It is all a matter of choice!!! I do it and I shop at Super Wal-Mart.

    As my former governor (gag), I know Vilsack is nothing more than a “yes” man for the regime in DC. That is why he was selected by BO. He has no real principles or beliefs of his own and is willing to be just another mouthpiece for their socialist agenda. Oh, and I am SICK and TIRED of paying for the junk food of fat asses who are too lazy to care about what they stuff into their pie holes. Not only at the grocery store, but I am also SICK and TIRED of subsidizing free lunch at the public schools. In Vilsack’s state, a family of 5 making nearly $50 grand qualifies for free school lunch. Why does no one have any dignity, pride and responsibility to pay their OWN way????? No, instead, it’s all about how many freebies you can get from the government. And whatever they get is NEVER enough. They always want and demand more and more and more. Never mind where the government gets the money from. It just comes from BO’s stash, right? And Benji at the Fed Reserve can just print more out of thin air!!! All we need is a “balanced” approach to raise revenue, right? I also say immediately they should cut out ALL JUNK FOOD, CHIPS, PREPARED FOODS, SODAS, and if they want these things buy them with their welfare money. I have seen many many times loaded buggies with all this junk food and trash, and they have to use the handicap cart to push them or bring their 5 kids to push the carts! And they scream in the white house about a HAPPY MEAL, for people who are paying the price! This should never happen in America no one has any pride or self esteem anymore..

    There is no way unemployment and food stamps “stimulate” the economy. At best it keeps the cashiers in work, but that is not job growth. All these statements are part of the Propagana Machine and they are repeated over and over so these tapes will play in your mind. Wow, hear it twice, it has to be the truth!

    What he has failed to say is the reliance on the states to increase their enrollment in order to get money. I would venture to say 40-60% of those on food stamps do not qualify. I am not against helping those in need just hose who deserve it. We need to re-write the rules for those who qualify and not increase the budget each year automatically wether it is needed or not,

It may be just me, but I define “creating a job” as employment that generates a NEW wage earner and contributor to society. Their product is their labor and their being paid for it. By his definition Robin Hood created jobs by giving people money to spend.

They exist because the government allows them to exist. The administration believes you are incapable of making decisions, so they will make them for you.     Brain death is a terrible thing. How does robbing a taxpayer at the gun barrel of the IRS stimulate anything but the taxman’s ego or keep the teat sucker satified to vote for a Dem because he gets free food and rent?

    Go Gault. Let the teat suckers feel what it’s like to see real hunger.

      Its like taking a 5 gallon bucket and dipping it into the east side of the pond. While the bucket is full you carry it to the west side of the pond and dump it in. Then claim that you raised the water level of the pond by 5 gallons……….Just dumb

      What we really need right now is another 1 Trillion Stimulus. It worked the last time and it will work again. If Congress does not pass one before October, My President has the right to order one through Executive Order. Who needs a Congress when you have one of the greatest Presidents in the world that knows better than any of us. We need a Hugo style referendum to allow My President to have unlimited terms in office if that is what it is going to take to get this country Progressive’ing forwards in the right direction.

    OK, now I see the light. If the federal minimum wage was $300/hr, perpetual unemployment compensation was $2,000/week and every American was on food stamps, our economy would be going gangbusters right now! It’s so clear to me!

      Why stop there? The poor need free Iphones, big screen televisions and choice seating at pro basketball, baseball and football games. They need cars, we can’t expect them to ride around in an air conditioned city bus. They need gas and insurance for that car. They need recreational drugs and money to bail them out of jail when they get caught. Man the list we could make if we thought about it…Poor people need our money! Write your check now so we can stimulate this economy!!

      Cell phones are already to most folks on food stamps by way of the “SafeLink” program. Free cell phone and 250 minutes per month FREE! (well…. free to the user – not to us.)

    That’s right. Here in MI there have been reports of bums…er I mean welfare recipients on food stamps that would buy cases of soda, dump out all the contents, then return the empty cans for cash! That’s liberal income for you!
