Violence as Thousands of UK Students Protest Tuition Fees

LONDON (AP) — Tens of thousands of students marched noisily through London on Wednesday to oppose plans to triple university tuition fees, in the largest street protest yet against the government’s sweeping austerity measures.

Organizers said 50,000 students, lecturers and supporters were demonstrating against plans to raise the cost of studying at a university to 9,000 pounds ($14,000) a year — three times the current rate.Violence as Thousands of UK Students Protest Tuition Fees

“I am here because it is important that students stand up and shout about what is going on,” said Anna Tennant-Siren, a student at the University of Ulster in Coleraine. “Politicians don’t seem to care. They should be taking money from people who earn seven-figure salaries, not from students who don’t have any money.”

Violence flared briefly during the overwhelmingly peaceful protest as a handful of people smashed windows in a high-rise building that houses the headquarters of the governing Conservative Party.Violence as Thousands of UK Students Protest Tuition Fees

Frances O’Grady, of the Trades Union Congress, said the hike would make colleges “no-go zones for young people from ordinary backgrounds.”

Britain’s Liberal Democrats, who are part of the coalition government, pledged during the country’s election campaign to abolish fees.

Protest leaders said they would attempt to use recall powers to oust lawmakers who break campaign promises on the issue.

The National Union of Students said it would try to recall legislators from the party who vote in favor on the hike.

“We will not tolerate the previous generation passing on its debts to the next, nor will we pick up the bill to access a college and university education that was funded for them,” said union president Aaron Porter.Violence as Thousands of UK Students Protest Tuition Fees

Opponents of the tuition hike have pointed out that Prime Minister David Cameron and other members of the government attended elite universities like Oxford and Cambridge at a time when university education was free.

The previous Labour government of Prime Minister Tony Blair introduced the first fees for students soon after it was elected in 1997. Scotland abolished tuition fees in 2000, and in the rest of Britain the cost is capped at about 3,000 pounds ($4,800) a year.

Yes, education expenses are getting ridiculous, and it’s not because the education is expensive.

“They should be taking money from people who earn seven-figure salaries.” Remember, kiddo: someday you may be the one making the 7 figures, and some little conceited arrogant self-centered brat is going to want to legally steal what you made.

On the one hand, as ghostie says, a three fold increase all at once is a helluva lot. So yeah, I can see why they have a gripe. On the other hand — rioting in the streets doesn’t help, kiddies, and only shows why you don’t deserve a helping hand. Finally — There Aint No Such Thing As A Free Lunch, as one of my favorite writers was fond of saying. If this is what the fee is being raised -to- , what is the actual cost? Even more? And how much has been pi$$ed away down the rabbit hole already on free university education?

Here we see the final result of the pyramid scheme that socialism is — tax the rich, tax the rich, tax the rich — then one day you wake up and there’s no-one left to tax. Uh-oh.

Right, precisely. If you (or your family) socks away X amount of pounds sterling as you were growing up, figuring on a nominal tuition cost, you consider yourself set. You get in college and suddenly going to school next year is going to wipe out all of your savings, poof gone, and you’re going to a bit upset.

If only the small, so small, libertarian population over there can help them understand who the real enemy here is (it’s not the Torries in this case) and redirect their anger. Doubt it will happen though.

They already take money from seven-figure earners. That, and most seven-figure earners actually – ahem – CONTRIBUTE to society with some sort of value!

The only thing many college kids contribute to is the local bar and the condom dispensers.

      @LLATPOH

Quite so. Unfortunately they don’t posess the ability to critically analyze this any longer. It’s such a shame, they should be venting their anger on the progressives who promised them Utopia on earth, the same progressives who KNEW that their promises were hollow, and who KNEW that their promises would bring down society (which is the goal of course). They should be mad as hell at the “Labor” folks for not living up to their promises, but they’re mad instead at the very people trying to SAVE THEIR BACON, and they don‘t even realize that they’re mad at their saviors. They don’t know, all they’ve been taught is progressivism, they literally have no framework to conceive of a different course.

There are small handfuls of libertarians over there, classical liberalism was birthed in Europe after all, especially Britain. Their grandfathers and great grandfathers who fought in WW1 and WW2 with us were every bit the liberty lovers as we are here, by and large.

The freedom loving type is endangered over there now though. Their numbers are few, and they don’t have a voice in the national debate over there. Here‘s hoping the Torries don’t capitulate, which they probably will.

Struggle. To obtain something of value, there is usually some, if not lots of struggle to achieve it. Realistically speaking, we are not going to get back to the type of country we want without a major stuggle. Being a part of the working middle-class, I realize there might be time where it will be difficult to meet my family’s, even my own basic needs. But I see the value. I get the struggle. I hope to relish it — if the struggle means getting us back as a strong nation — and not towards a socialized world.

Can‘t say I’ve experienced the U.K. being “rolled over” for Sharia law. France perhaps, but they’re starting to fight back. Last time I was in London (last year) it had small segments of middle eastern sections, while the vast majority of the rest of the city was the common lily white ango-saxon type. Getting out of London and it was even less ME, in fact I don’t think I saw anything but typical anglo-saxons outside of London. Walking through the ME parts of the city was no big deal. The streets and shops there were clean, there was no demand that my wife “cover up” and all that rot.

I suspect that the reports of the Islamization of Britain are a bit overinflated.

@Ghost of England: did you go to Birmingham or Liverpool? One of the suburbs of B’ham just elected a new mayor of Pakistani origin who ran on the campaign pledge of making Sharia law the justice system in the city. They have also been a couple of cases recently also where the High Court has decided that a case who be better adjucated in a Sharia court. Take the case also of Oklahoma where once again we the people spoke, but they the judges ruled that the people’s wishes re Sharia law are unconstitutional when they ruled in favor of the lawsuit brought by CAIR. Nudge, nudge, no one will notice, nudge some more, and you are in.
Regarding the students in England. First, I would want to know who organized this well-orchestrated protest and who paid for all those poor students to travel to the protest. Second, why in all these types of demonstrations do they feel the need to burn and destroy? Do they ever stop to think that some of the businesses they burn or loot might go out of business causing people to lose their jobs? Do they realize that they might as well just burn their money? Third, the education system in UK has for many years been indoctrinating the students that environment is god and that education is a human right, not a privilege. This same sort of indoctrination is slowly, but surely creeping into our own education system. Think Al Gore‘s speech to middle school students telling them that there are things that they know that their parents don’t or the new car commercial where the obvious child is upset because their car is not “cool” enough. They already succeeded in getting our children to accept wearing only clothes or shoes with logos on them. It is time to wake up and push back.

You know, on the one hand I think that they‘re a bunch of people who think they’re entitled to everything. That much is quite clear. On the other hand, it would probably tick me off a bit if one year I was paying X number of dollars to attend school (and my parents are being taxed to the eyeballs and barely able to afford X dollars), and the next year I‘m told I’ll be paying X*3 dollars.

It’s easy to call these kids hippies, and in a sense yeah, totally socialist kids. But they really don’t know better, it‘s all they’ve ever experienced in their short lives. I strongly doubt that, due to the onerous taxation in Britain, that 80% of them will be able to afford (with or without their parents) X*3 Sterling next year. So in a sense, I see why they’re upset.

That said, they’re bankrupt just like us. They can no longer afford to be cared for cradle to grave. Not to worry, this is a temper tantrum. These are the descendents of the once mighty Anglo Saxons, they‘ll adapt I’m certain.

Yeah, at $14,000. The cost of living is insane over there, they are taxed at rates that would make you want to pick up a rifle and go into politics, if you get my meaning. They simply do not have, as a whole, the means that we do over here at the same “class” levels. In other words, a middle class person in these united States has a large surplus of money normally that he spends on luxuries or fun or saves in the bank. Not so much in Britain. Their taxation, yikes, horror story.

These kids aren’t French, they normally don‘t riot for fun because they’re bored. I can‘t recall the last time I’ve heard of British students rioting en masse (though I’m sure they must have at some point).

Please don’t misunderstand, I’m not excusing them per se. I‘m just wondering if they simply don’t have the intellectual tools to understand what they’re protesting? They‘ve been taught nothing but fabian socialism over there since the late 1940’s. They have rage, but it is misdirected in my view. They should be burning down the homes of the smug little progressive professors who taught them and their parents that you can get something for nothing. Just my view of course.

Capitalism and Socialism are like oil and water, kids. You either pay the actual cost of school under a capitalist style system, and gain a competitve advantage in the market by having an education, or you enact your socialist utopia, where everyone gets a diluted degree and you are still stuck with the thousands of people looking for the same work with the same worthless piece of paper. Indeed it is coming to America soon; get the people hooked on so many programs for so long and when the real world comes crashing into your cozy little set of life – suprise. People hate to have any changes come into their worlds. They often fail to realise or prepare that life is built about change, and nothing we do can avoid this one dynamic from happening.

What we can do is try to anticipate parts of it coming, adapt to it, and find the best or make the best of the new relaities rippling outward from the events occuring.

Our own government is now in position to tell people who will go to shcool, who will do what, and who will get paid what (by determining what education they will or will not get.)

Libs, Socialists,….whatever they want to call themselves. This is the government their society wanted. One day, they woke up to find out that all the money was gone. Now, if they want something they have to pay for “all” of it themselves. Cry Baby, Cry Baby. When the udder is dry, the teat produces nothing. Suck on a turnip or something else.
Coming soon to a theatre near you.

Today‘s action by the immature tarts explains why it’s so expensive to try to educate them.

Big Educaion is out of control. I believe it is a rip off to go 60k into debt and only know how to riot at the end of your stint at the indoctrination station. These students are so smart about finances and economics.. Oh, are they still students because they have a head full of mush? Tell them if they don’t like a product or service to walk on by and do not patronize the intity. Shoot they don’t teach capitalism anymore. No wonder the students don’t understand how their seven figure fathers voted this sort of mess for them. At least they will get extra gym credit for rioting.

Maybe your incompetant parents should have planned a little better for your education you spoiled little brats.

I don‘t own a BMW because I can’t afford one. The same reason I had no children. I knew I couldn’t afford them.

We need to put birth control in the worlds water supply for a decade or so. Too many stupid people breeding carelessly.

Funny, look how much effort it takes to adopt a child, how you have to meet strict criteria just to have a chance at getting a child (in which we have a grand abundance). Yet any two retards can breed at will. It’s astonishing. Nothing seems rational in our society anymore, nothing makes sense.

      @ Fletch.
It’s overpriced here because “Everyone” can now go to college, even the most ignorantly stoooopid imbicile student.
Why?, the government says it’s their right and force taxpayers to give student loans (most never gets repaid) and grants.See, the ignoramouses think‘s it’s government $$ and not the taxpayers.
Um, the government tells them it‘s the government’s $$. I guess it is.If a thief grabs your wallet and take all the $$ that’s in it. What da hey!! it‘s now the thief’s money.
The colleges don’t mind, they have dumbded down entrance exams and curriculums to get as many government paid students as they can get.The more the merrier.
Soo, they keep on raising tuitions, after-all, it’s only government money.
The Chancellors can then live in even more opulence. The profs can then devote even more time to writing manuals that no one reads,( It’s all about how many books they publish, never mind that no one reads them) The classes are now being taught by even dumber advanced (?) student teachers.
Go to government funded(aka taxpayers paid) college, do your 4 years and get a job at MickeyD’s or Burger King.
Many corporations won‘t hire them because they not only can’t read, they can’t even add 2+2.
But what da hey!! They are college grads. It’s the American dream, like buying a home you can’t afford.

I feel a little bad for them. They probably didn’t know what was coming. Many of us (before we started looking into it) really didn‘t realize how the government really can’t afford what is going on. Although I am currently in the lower half of the economic spectrum, I am doing my best (by working hard) to make a decent living. I’ll be more prepared when the tax benefits of being poor go away than someone who is not awake.

Glenn Beck asked his fans to create a web site where people that are just waking up can go to be educated. If you have a web site (or page) that can help provide part of this education, please feel free to add it to my Restoring America Portal: http://www.squidoo.com/restore-america
